Foundation Sponsors 1st Annual Black & Gold Banquet

The Anahuac ISD Education Foundation sponsored the First Annual Black & Gold Academic Banquet May 21 at White’s Park.

The banquet honored the Top Ten stu-dents of the Anahuac High School Class of 2015.

The Class of 2015 Valedictorian is Ali Kontominas. Salutatorian is Joshuia Cooper.

Also honored were mentors — teachers who made a special impact on the high-achieving students.

Following are some of the comments made by the students of their mentor:

“Coach Ben West never sugar coats any-

thing, which is why I have the utmost respect for this man,” said Joshuia Cooper of his mentor.

“Coach Kirk Moore challenged us to think outside the box and allowed us to find our own solutions,” said Toan Huynh.

“Thank you for all the help you have given me ad for always encouraging me to do my best,” said Elaine Nguyen of mentor Patricia Gonzalez.

The banquet was catered by Russell Ezer, with members of Geraldine Brown’s Culinary Arts class serving the guests.

Anahuac ISD board members dis-cussed the 2015 graduation ceremony at White’s Park pavilion during the June 9 meeting and what steps can be taken for next year.

AISD previously held ceremonies either at Kyle White Field or in the auditorium during inclement weather.

Input from the community showed a need next year for more seating and additional cooling measures.

Superintendent James Hopper sug-gested having four chairs available in-side the arena for each graduate to designate to whoever they choose, adding this would greatly alleviate crowding in the stands. The board also discussed having water on hand for anyone in need.

Humphrey also suggested porta-coolers to help cool the air.

Board members noted that even though the air within the arena was tolerable, the stands were much warmer because air did not circulate as much among the fully-occupied bleachers.

However, it was the consensus of the board that holding the graduation ceremony at White’s Park was still the better option.

“It’s nice not to have to worry about Mother Nature,” said Humphrey.

In other business, Mr. Humphrey reported that 65 high school students are enrolled in this year’s Summer School.

Anahuac Middle School Principal Tammy Duhon reported that 75 of her

students are enrolled in Summer school.

There are 117 Anahuac Elementary students enrolled in Summer School.

The board hired Shae Bowman, Cherie Burns, Heather Roecker, Lat-isha Powell, Laura Burke and Mary Anne LeBlanc for Anahuac Elemen-tary, Katy Andrade and Jennifer Bar-ber for Anahuac Middle School, Yadira Rivera for Anahuac High School and Cullen Henicke for Maintenance.

The board acknowledged the retire-ment of Myra Norman, Geraldine Brown and Teresa LaFour.

It also acknowledged the resigna-tions of Marcia Smith, Irma Pren, Ron Copper, Phillip Partlow, Ernest Palo-mo, Michelle Hatfield, Lin Ellis, Darla Attaway and Rosetta Raymond.

UIL Team Competes

at State Level The Anahuac High School Academic Team sent four members to

the State Meet in Austin in May to compete in Current Events competi-

tion. The Current Events team made up of Carlos Chavez, Luciano

Palacios, Carlee Rose and Kaitelynn Innerarity were District and Re-

gional Champs. They fell short at State, but ended up in a respectable

4th place position.

Junior Carlos Chavez finished in 6th place and received a medal. All

competitors are Juniors and they will return next year in an attempt to

win State.

The team is coached by High School US History teacher Mario Gar-

za. Congratulations to all the competitors. Pictured at right are Carlee

The Anahuac High School Class of 2015The Anahuac High School Class of 2015 The graduating Class of 2015 said goodbye to high school days

June 6 during the Commencement Ceremony at White’s Park Pavil-

ion.

Ali Kontominas led her class as Valedictorian.

“It’s not enough to simply get by in life, that doesn’t move the

world forward,” she said.

“You must try to excel in everything you do and strive for excel-

lence in every task. We may not have the power to inspire the en-

tire world to strive for success, but we do have the power to

achieve it for ourselves. My challenge for you is that in all that you

do, strive to reach your full potential. If each of the students here

today do that, imagine what effect we would have on the future.

The future is truly in our hands, so let’s make the most of it.”

Joshuia Cooper served as Salutatorian.

“As we all gather here to celebrate more than a decade of long,

hard years of learning, we are surrounded by all the people who

taught and inspires through our lives,” he said.

“As we leave this campus and move on to the next chapters of

our lives, we will carry with us, not only the book learning, but also

the life lessons you taught us.”

The 8th annual AISD Speed Day was held May 15 at Ana-huac High School. Three hundred and fifty students and 217 teachers from thirteen districts attended.

Anahuac, Barbers Hill, Bob Hope School, Crosby, East Chambers, Goose Creek, Huffman, Hull-Daisetta, Kountze, Liberty, Lumberton, Nederland, and West Hardin participated in events specifically designed to the meet needs of students with disabilities. The variety of activities included academic competitions, carnival games, and track and field events. The word “Speed” is an acronym for Special People Excelling Eve-ry Day.

“I would like to thank all of the AISD faculty, staff, adminis-trators, board members, volunteers, and the following spon-sors who made Speed Day 2015 a special day for so many wonderful children,” said organizer Mary Ann Renner.

“A very special thank you goes to the AHS student volunteers who did an out-standing job,” said Ms.

Renner. “Teachers and visitors from the participating districts told me

continually how very impressed they were with all the student helpers and how much they appreciated their encouraging and caring attitudes.”

37 Years AHS educator Geraldine Brown

was honored with a retirement party recently. She is leaving AISD after serving the District for 37 years.

She has taught classes in Family and Consumer Science, been class sponsor for all grade levels, spon-sored Future Homemakers of America, and served as a board member for Vocational Home Eco-nomics Association of Texas. She also sponsored Teens in the Driv-ers Seat, sponsored cheerleaders for a total of 15 years and served as board member for Family and Consumers Science Teachers As-sociation of Texas.

Anahuac ISD staff members who have reached years of service milestones were recognized during the End of the Year Luncheon June 5.

Superintendent James Hopper thanked all in attendance for their dedication to the children and parents during the luncheon catered by Antonio’s.

Page 9 The SlateThe Slate AES: How Does Your Garden Grow?

AES is greening up with a vegetable garden that is flour-ishing under the watchful care of fifth graders.

Teacher Christine Miller was asked last year by former AES Principal Tetyana Yeromenko to begin a garden project with the help of students and funded by AES.

Mrs. Miller and her husband built the garden boxes and filled them with good soil, compost and manure. They had a late start, so not much was done with the garden last year. This spring, Mrs. Mil-ler and teacher Kay Zieschang planned a

spring garden, and with the help of fifth grade classes, it was planted and maintained. The garden features a variety of plants — green beans, squash, zucchini, banana peppers, bell peppers, tomatoes, radish, eggplant, kale, okra, carrots, herbs and sunflowers.

Teacher Deana Price donated a compost bin, and Melissa Dubois donated a garden wagon, and many others at AES donated buckets, seeds, gloves, etc. The cafeteria has been helpful with old lettuce for the compost bin

“The students are just as fascinated to see old food being turned into compost as watching seeds turn into food!” said Mrs. Miller. “We will use the compost in the garden as a natu-

ral fertilizer.” Classes have been invited out to visit the gar-den so that students can see where food really comes from. Joanna Schimek used the garden as a

teaching tool last year for her math classes who were learn-ing about area and square feet.

The teachers also plan to have a worm bin next year in the fall to use for fertilizer. The garden will be chemical and pesti-

cide-free, and the plan is to have only heritage plants so they can save seeds for the following year.

Ms. Zieschang and Mrs. Miller will tend the garden during the summer months. Currently, the produce grown is taken to the Administration office. If the garden expands in the future, produce will be donated to the local food bank or local nursing homes.

were honored as being All-District players for the 2015 season.

As the third place finisher in district 23-3A, Anahuac placed four

players on the first team.

The pitcher-catcher duo of Bethany Brown and Maegan Oler

were both 1st Team All District Picks. Outfielder Kathryn Sher-

man and Infielder Third Baseman Sabrina Trahan were also 1st

Team picks. Ashley Gates was honored as 2nd Team All District

Designated.

Page 10 The SlateThe Slate The Culinary I students had the opportunity to eat their semester

exam! The students participated in this competition that was created and judged by the Advance Culinary students: Brianna Humphrey, Ja-mus Lotz, Tony Netro and Jamie Reily along with two additional former students of Anahuac H. S.: Froylan Grande (a 2014 graduate of Escof-fier Culinary Institute of Austin) and Dominique Williams (an airline at-tendant).

Prior to the competition, the students being judged were allowed to select their partner. They worked in groups of two and selected their own recipe to prepare. The twist to this competition was the students were presented with four additional ingredients and of the four, they had to incorporate three of the ingredients into their existing recipe and prepare the item for the judges to judge. The mystery ingredients for the first round were marshmallows, almonds, bacon, and cherries. In-gredients for the second and third rounds were grey poupon mustard, bacon, marshmallows and cherries.

The students were also scored on presentation of their creation to the judges, safety and sanitation, and most of all, teamwork.

There were three sessions with two sessions of five teams compet-ing. The third session had only one team competing.

At the end of the four-hour competition the winners were announced: First Place: “Not Jose” - C. J. Parsons and Geordan Howard. Second Place: “The Gladiators” - Caleb Edmonds and Denton

Fugere. Third Place: “The Cobras” - Travis Watson and Mikhaelis Moore. The winning prizes were merchant gift cards of $25 $15 and $10.

“All in all, it was a good time and a valuable learning experience for the students and the judges,” said instructor Geraldine Brown.

Rebecca Green's anatomy and physiology and chemistry classes had the op-

portunity to listen to a guest speaker May 26.

Josh Yonker, head athletic trainer from Lamar University, spoke about the edu-

cation and experience required to become an athletic trainer.

He also gave information of the responsibilities on the job. The students were

shown demonstrations of tests given to athletes to assess injuries.

Anahuac Middle School students got a taste of Aggieland when they

visited A&M University June 3. Teachers Loy Garvey, Tammy King

and Laura Willcox took the Career and Gifted & Talented students to

Texas A&M University for a tour of the campus.

Students had the opportunity to experience the “military walk,”

learned a wildcat yell and were given valuable information about the

university and its history. Students also enjoyed lunch on campus in

the Student Center before returning back to AMS.

Middle School Hosts Career Day Anahuac Middle School students May 15 had the opportunity

to meet persons from many walks of life during the annual Career

Day.

AES Field Day Anahuac Elementary students participated May 4 and 5 in the annual Track and Field

days. The events were held at the AISD track this year.

Anahuac High School student Traci Alexander signed her letter of intent May

28 to judge on the Houston Community Collegiate Horse Judging and to compete

nationally against other junior college students.

“Judging on a collegiate team not only provides a phenomenal out-of-class

experience for students, but also builds confidence, develops a competitive atti-

tude and desire to achieve,” said Dr. Jeff Koch, HCC Agriculture and Horticulture

department head.

“By signing the letter of intent, Traci is committing to judge the competitions for

two years at HCC. We are excited to have Traci join our Horse Judging Program.

She is not only a great student, but also a great equine evaluator,” Koch said.

The Agriculture Program at Houston Community College is a leading source of

information about agriculture, horticulture, animal management and forestry in

the Houston area.
