Our Vision A safe learning environment where students are empowered: with the skills to question; the desire to improve; the will to persevere and develop resilience; to inspire each other to be the best they can be.

ENGAGE EXPERIENCE EMPOWER

Room 12, Year 1/2 have been learning about Food and Fibre Production in Design and Technologies this semester.

Part of our learning has involved investigating the needs of animals.

We designed a model of a chicken coop which catered for the needs of chickens including their food, water, space and protection.

We were very lucky to have Tyler’s parents, Shane and Louise, bring in their chickens to show us.

Welcome to the Term 2 Week 4 edition of the Grovelander. I must admit to being a little stunned that it is Week 4 already and we have so much to do. Weeks 3 and 4 are dominated by our NAPLAN Testing Program for Year 3 and 5 students. No doubt you would have heard and seen many reports in the media about problems with the online

test and connectivity. I am happy to say to you that NAPLAN has progressed very well at Grovelands with the students suffering only minor disruptions that have not interfered with their ability to access the tests. Mrs Kapuscik, supported by Mr York and Mr Brown, has very ably led a team of staff to do a great job for our students in keeping things on track. Last Friday afternoon was another exciting time, as we returned to interschool winter sports via the Eagles Cup (football, soccer and netball), with our first away game of the series being held at Willandra PS. I enjoyed helping with the football team and was pleased to hear that our netball and soccer teams acquitted themselves well. This Friday we have a home fixture against Gwynne Park PS. Mr Hobley has put a lot of work into getting us into the Eagles Cup program and I thank him for his hard work. We have relaunched our Good Standing Policy this term, following endorsement by the School Board in Term 1. This Policy sits alongside our Behaviour Management Policy and will be used to determine eligibility to represent the school in various events such as Wakakirri, Interschool Sports, Excursions and Camps. Copies of this important Policy will be placed on our App (under the policy tab) and on our website www.grovelandsps.wa.edu.au (under Policies & Plans in the ‘Our School’ section). Finally, I am pleased to announce that we will have another opportunity for fathers and father figures to spend quality time with their children (provided by the Fathering Project) on Tuesday, June 11 from 5.30 to 6.30pm. We are holding a Lego workshop with support from the City of Armadale library. There are only 20 places so get in quick. The registration details are on our School App.

Room 14 conducted a Waste Audit on one rubbish bin after lunchtime. This is what we found inside the bin (pic 1).

We sorted the rubbish into organic/compostable (pic 2), landfill (pic3), packets (pic4), plastic (pic 5) Which has the most?? We discovered that most of this rubbish could be recycled or eliminated by not buying small packets of snack foods, and instead buying a large bag of say potato chips and then using a small container to bring some to school in our lunch boxes each day. You not only save money on glad wrap and zip lock bags, you are saving the oceans and the land by not burying more and more plastic into the ground.

Tip 25 - Discussing beliefs with kids

As part of The Fathering Project’s involvement with your school, I will be including helpful tips and ideas for all fathers and father figures. I hope these tips will help, inspire and encourage all fathers and father figures to be the best that they can be, as all fathers and father figures are critically important in every child’s life.

More involved fathers and father figures = better outcomes for children.

The Fathering Project is not a counselling service; we are seeking to inspire and equip fathers and father

figures to engage with their children.

If you would like more information about The Fathering Project, you can contact me: David Walker at

[email protected] or 9391 1900.

With the cooler weather approaching, remember to ensure your child’s jackets and jumpers are clearly labelled with their name.

Friday is Pie Day - $4 with a juice. Place orders at the canteen Friday mornings. Wednesday is Pizza Day - $5.00 with a juice. Pre-order before 9.00am Monday and Tuesday only, at the Canteen. Monday is Subway Day. Place orders at Room 25 before 9.00am Mondays. $6.00

NAPLAN WEEK 2 Years 3 & 5

We are excited to be taking part in the 2019 Woolworths Earn and Learn program, running from May 1 to June 25. Collect your stickers at Woolworths and for every $10 you spend, you will receive a sticker. Your children can then place them on the special sticker sheet which are available in store or place the stickers in the box in the school office. The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources including mathematics and English resources, art and crafts materials and much more. We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program.

Discuss your beliefs with your children, whatever they are.

Give children the opportunity to learn and think about belief issues by themselves.

We can cause children to react against our own or any other belief by the way we talk about it and how we behave.

Beliefs are best transmitted to children if reflected in the lives of their parents.

A father’s personal beliefs can have positive or negative effects on fathering.

All children should arrive at school after 8.00am and be in class by 8.40am each day. Being on time displays good manners and

helps ensure that vital learning opportunities aren’t missed.
