I hope everyone took the opportunity to have a relaxing time over the New Year period, particularly those on holidays across January. At long last we have a new website for our Camp Kanga at Lake Proserpine. Have a look at it on - www.campkanga.com.au It certainly now has a more attractive, up market and professional look to entice our potential customers, with a myriad of photos and information telling the Kanga story. Congratulations go to President Phil Highland, Brian McAtee and the Lions of Townsville Castle Hill for their initiative to conduct the Drought Appeal project with over $120,000 raised so far since October. To date, this mainly has come from Lions Clubs across Queensland; now we have gained approval at the Council of Governors to approach every Lions Club in Australia. Whilst recent bushfires have been foremost in Lions minds across MD 201, the drought is severe and enduring in Queensland and northern NSW and we have the agency Aussie Helpers on the ground to ensure all support is rapidly distributed to those in need. Our country cousins are resilient but never ask for help, and we have had some emotional stories come back to us from donees. Thank you to those Clubs who have assisted to date with donations. Good luck to all Clubs conducting various levels of Lions Youth of the Year in the coming weeks. This is a wonderful project providing great opportunities for our youth; but let’s not forget that these young people and their families may be potential members of our great organisation. Our District Final this year is being presented by Mackay Host Club, facilitated by our District coordinator Winston Sleaford. In addition, also this year Q2 is hosting the State Final in Cairns on 11 th and 12 th April. Our Queensland coordinator is Kay Waters from Mackay North Club and locally, our Zone 1 Chair Rachel Davey and Cairns Barrier Reef Club are hosting. Best wishes to you all. Saturday February 22 nd sees another showcase event for youth with the District Leo of the Year competition. This is planned at the Townsville Castle Hill Club Den in Fleming Street, with District Leo Chair Sue Ruddick in charge. It would be great if nearby Lions could give our District Leos support by attending. Details will be out soon. All Clubs should now be in possession of information for March Membership Month. This is a worldwide event and is an opportunity for clubs to conduct membership campaigns on the back of national and district promotion that will be in local media. At the start of this year, I challenged all Presidents to achieve at least a net growth of + one (1) in your year. I

now encourage all Membership Chairs to grasp the opportunity to support your Presidents in conducting a membership event in March, bringing in fresh faces to sustain your club into the future.

At your DG visits, I have been promoting Branch Clubs of Youth. Why not consider this for March; it is a great way to introduce youth into our clubs. They are full Lions, but able to meet separately as a subset of your main club with their own agenda and leader positions. Contact me for details.

Lions lead the fight against measles and rubella

The new challenge is for Lions to raise $30 million by our centenary year 2017. Lions $30 million will be matched dollar for dollar by the U.K. Department of International Development or the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, giving a total of $60 million in the fight against measles and rubella.

Bill Gates Sr, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation said “We are grateful for the continued and generous commitment of Lions to improve the health of the world’s poorest children. This partnership will help to urgently reach all children, no matter where they live, with the vaccines they need.”

“Giving the measles vaccine to children is one of the simplest things to do to protect them from the disease and its dreadful consequences,” said the Rt Hon Justine Greening MP, the U.K.’s Secretary of State for International Development, “The funds raised by Lions Members and matched by the U.K. or the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will mean that millions of children will have healthier and happier lives, able to better contribute to their communities.”

Measles is a highly infectious and deadly disease, killing an estimated 430 people daily, according to the WHO by weakening the immune system, making young children vulnerable to pneumonia, blindness, diarrhoea, hearing loss and brain damage. We’ve had recent scares here in Australia where measles has been brought back from overseas by travellers.

But, measles can be prevented with a safe and inexpensive vaccine. The measles-rubella vaccine costs less than $1 per dose.

Lions have entered into a partnership with the GAVI Alliance, whose mission is to save children’s lives and protect people’s health by increasing access to immunisation in the world’s poorest countries; an organisation formed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The GAVI Alliance was formerly known as the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation.

This new partnership will enable Lions to continue to save lives with a simple inexpensive vaccine. Lions play a key role in social mobilisation efforts by working with local leaders, co-ordinating community level publicity and serving as volunteers at vaccination centres.

In the next phase of the Lions-GAVI partnership, by 2020, more than 700 million children in 49 countries will be immunised against measles and rubella.

Every donation is eligible to go towards a Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) or Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship (PMJF).

Please help Lions save lives by sending your donation cheque made out in Australian Dollars to ‘LCI/LCIF Lions Measles Initiative’ to your District Cabinet Treasurer.

Castle Hill Lions Club Drought Relief Project

The Club has made a decision to continue the drive to raise funds for drought relief as the need for assistance in the Western area of our State will continue for some time after the rains finally arrive.

Thank you for your support so far and we hope to receive further assistance over the coming weeks from Clubs who may still wish to help.

The following article appeared in the press recently and clearly shows the severity of the problems faced by our rural communities.

Longreach farmers Sam and Belinda Coxon are ready to walk off their

property, Kateroy, if the drought does not break by end of February.

The catastrophic rainfall figures that have pushed Queensland farmers to the edge. Source: Courier Mail

ONE of the founding families of Longreach will walk off their property next month if rain

fails to break the devastating drought.

Sam Coxon, whose family arrived in the area in 1887, said without rain it would be impossible to keep their stock alive.

"If we haven't had four inches (10cm) of rain (by February 28), well, basically the rest of this stock will have to go," Mr Coxon said. "And we'll have to go and do something else."

Stock numbers on their 7600ha property, Kateroy, have fallen from 4500 sheep to fewer than 2000 while about 300 head of cattle have been reduced to just 90. The story is repeated throughout rural Queensland, with 63 per cent of the state drought declared.

Some farmers believe the drought is the worst in half a century and the harsh environmental conditions are being compounded by poor market conditions which are still to recover from 2011's live cattle export ban.

Premier Campbell Newman speaks with Sam and Belinda Coxon on their drought-affected property, Kateroy, near Longreach.

Picture: Lyndon Mechielsen

Mr Coxon said the export ban debacle was also heavily affecting sheep farmers because interstate properties used for agistment were full of cattle, forcing farmers to rely on fodder at $1000-a-tonne.

Premier Campbell Newman toured the parched property yesterday and announced $20 million in additional assistance for drought-affected producers.

The assistance includes $13 million in freight subsidies and assistance for water infrastructure costs, a further $5 million to reduce land rent and water licensing costs and $2 million for community events and counselling.

The Longreach and Barcaldine council areas were also yesterday added to the list of drought-declared regions, taking the total to 26.

Veteran LNP MP Vaughan Johnson said it was the worst conditions he had seen since Quilpie in 1965.

"We didn't have the road transportation then to move them elsewhere, we didn't have the feed or any other commodity," he said. "But this is as bad if not worse, I believe, than '65."

AgForce president Ian Burnett welcomed the assistance but said it was time for the Federal Government to act on a new scheme.

"We are now looking to the Abbott Government to recognise the severity of this drought event and acknowledge that conditions are now such that, under the previous system, criteria for Exceptional Circumstances assistance would have been reached," he said.

Lions Clubs International District 201 Q2

2013 - 2014

URGENT ATTENTION: Club Presidents and Membership Chairs January 2014

Once again this year, across Lions Australia we have adopted the Annual March Membership Campaign, focussed

on Membership Growth in existing Clubs.

Every Club in every District is encouraged to plan and conduct at least one pro-active recruitment activity in the

month of March. This will be supported by an intensive PR campaign at all levels.

All Clubs were emailed in mid January, a package, with components to support clubs in this Campaign. As Clubs

have indicated they require assistance with membership drives, included in the package is a PowerPoint

presentation on a 7 Step Sales Process, adapted for Selling Lions. Clubs are encouraged to present this slideshow

at a club meeting, or Zone Chairs may elect to conduct a more extensive training program for the purpose.

Certainly, your Zone Chair should be in a position to guide and assist your Club in planning and delivering this

recruitment program.

District will be running adverts in local papers etc in the first week of March, so a local awareness should be there.

In the package also is a draft Press Release that can be adapted for local use.

You will see in the Campaign a request for Clubs to report progress weekly to Zone Chairs who will report collated

information to our District Membership Chair Terry Clark. It is important that we keep track of plans and progress.

Please read through the campaign materials thoroughly.

Although there have been refreshing numbers admitted to our Clubs this Lions year, we have sustained significant

losses also. This campaign may be the last real opportunity in your year as President, to add to your service

workforce. Remember, every additional Lions provides “Two More Hands” to support your local community.

I encourage all Clubs to commit to this campaign; an opportunity to take advantage of a nationwide promotion, to

achieve growth to sustain your Club’s future.

Thank you all and I look forward to broad commitment with this campaign.

Time to Plan Your Club Election of Officers for 2014/2015

Club Election Guidelines

General Procedural Guidelines for Club Elections.

Club Elections – Timing: Elections are to be held no later than April 15 of each year. The club secretary is required, either by mail or by personal delivery, to give notice to each member of the club at least fourteen (14) calendar days prior to the date of election. (Standard Form Club By- Laws, Article IV, Section 1.)

Nomination Committee: The Club President appoints the nomination committee, which submits the names of candidates for various club offices to the club membership at the nomination meeting. (Standard Form Club By-Laws, Article IV, Section 2.)

Nominations: Nominations may be made from the floor of the nomination meeting. Once nominations have been closed, no more nominations may be made. If the nominee/s are unable to serve, and there is no other nominee, the nominating committee may submit, at the election meeting, names of additional nominees for that office. (Standard Form Club By-Laws, Article IV, Section 2 and 3.)

Eligibility for Office: To be eligible for club office, the Lion must be an active member in good standing. (Standard Form Club By-Laws, Article II, Section 2.)

General Voting Guidelines: Unless otherwise provided in the respective club constitution and bylaws, the election shall be by ballot by those present and eligible to vote. A plurality vote is necessary to elect.

Quorum: The presence in person of a majority of the members in good standing. (Standard Form Club By-Laws, Article III, Section 5.)

Form of Ballot: Unless otherwise provided in the respective club constitution and by-laws, or other adopted rules, in elections, “for” and “against” spaces or boxes should not be used. They are applicable only with respect to votes on motions. An election, in effect, is a vote on filling a blank, and a voter can vote against one candidate only by voting for another who has been nominated or by writing in the name of another candidate.

AUSTRALIAN LIONS CHILDHOOD

CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION

First I would like to wish you all the best for the New Year and hope that your Festive Season was a safe and happy one. This year I would like to focus on our Lions Projects that I look after for the District, but just one at a time. As you can see by the header, February will be the ALCCRF. This Foundation is focused on research to find cures for childhood cancers, a most confronting disease for any family to endure especially with the thought that they may lose their child if he or she is diagnosed with cancer. In the past if a child was diagnosed with cancer the rate of survival was 3 out of 10; currently that figure has dramatically changed and now stands at 8 out of 10 survivals. This is due to the ongoing research into cures and that is where your contribution will help, funding that ongoing research. As you would have read in the January edition of the Nth. Lion, the Trustees have set a goal of raising $1,000,000 annually to fund the best clinical research into childhood cancer in this country. This .level of funding will enable the Foundation to fund projects like the NSW/QLD Rural Childhood Cancer Management Program which will complement the Cancer Management that is already available to patients in the capital cities in Australia. A major part of our research will go towards Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) which remains the most common causes of death in children.

How can Lions help? Coming up in April is Australia’s Biggest BBQ month and we would like to see as many Clubs as possible involved in this project. Whilst April is the gazetted month it does not really matter when Clubs get involved. Other ways to help funding is the purchase of the IP Barry Palmer Award, Lions Rose and Rose lapel pins, Christmas Pins (collector’s item), Neil Williams Awards or just a good old fashioned donation. Alligator Creek Branch Club The Beginning of a New Lions Club

An information night organised by Castle Hill

Lions Club was held in the Alligator Creek Bowls

and Recreation Club in February 2013 to gauge

interest in the formation of a Lions Club in the

Alligator Creek area.

A number of the guests attending were

interested and it was decided to meet twice a

month to recruit additional interested members.

Castle Hill Lions Club included an Easter raffle,

participation in the Anzac Day Service at Alligator

Creek and a Community Day with displays from

many of the local Clubs and Organisations from

Alligator Creek.

By June, numbers were still not strong so all of

the interested members were inducted into the

Castle Hill Lions Club and a separate Alligator

Creek committee formed to continue the drive

for an Alligator Creek Club.

Further projects including an Alligator Creek car

boot sale, picking and selling local mangos and a

Christmas raffle were undertaken.
