A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

On this mountain the LORD of hosts

will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines,

juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines. On this mountain he will destroy

the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations;

he will destroy death forever. The Lord GOD will wipe away

the tears from every face; the reproach of his people he will remove

from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken. On that day it will be said:

"Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us! This is the LORD for whom we looked;

let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!" For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

R. (6cd) I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose;

beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul.

R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. He guides me in right paths

for his name's sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side

with your rod and your staff that give me courage.

R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. You spread the table before me

in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows. R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life;

and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come.

R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians

Brothers and sisters: I know how to live in humble circumstances;

I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things

I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need.

I can do all things in him who strengthens me. Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress. My God will fully supply whatever you need,

in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.”’ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come.

Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. The king said to him, 'My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?' But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, 'Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen." The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts,

so that we may know what is the hope that belongs to our call. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Through the waters of Baptism we welcome the following into the Church:

October is Respect Life Month Let us pray, Father and maker of all, you adorn all creation with splendor and beauty and fashion human lives in your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of life. Grant this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen

POPE FRANCIS’ OCTOBER PRAYER INTENTION The Laity’s Mission in the Church: “We pray that by the virtue of baptism, the laity, especially women, may participate more in areas of responsibility in the Church.”

LOVE LIFE AMENDMENT will be #1 on the ballot in the November 3rd election. VOTE CATHOLIC. Vote “YES” to the Amendment No. 1 on the ballot. A “YES” supports adding language to the La. Constitution stating “To protect human life, nothing in our Constitution can be construed to secure or protect a right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.” Senator Katrina Jackson noted: “This amendment makes sure there is no right to abortion or tax payer funding of abortion in our state constitution.” By voting “YES” to Amendment #I we can rest assured that, together with our state law, we will never become like New York, who recently legalized abortion up to the moment of conception.

RCIA, The Right of Christian Initiation, is for anyone in need of baptism, persons baptized in another Christian faith but interested in becoming Roman Catholic, and persons baptized Catholic in need of First Communion and/or Confirmation. Our Thursday Confirmation D Groups met for the third time on September 29. The theme of this session was the cost of discipleship. Sometimes, we Christians can fall into the mistake of equating Christianity with a life of ease. Yet in the Gospels, Jesus makes it clear that discipleship often means a life of suffering. He says, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). These crosses can be things we willingly choose—like giving up sleep in order to get to Mass on time, risking being labeled a “holy roller,” or giving up some bad habits. Other times, it’s sufferings that we don’t choose like the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the pain of being overlooked. Whatever the case, we know that Jesus is close to us in our suffering. Also, it’s important to remember that the cross never has the final word. Just as Jesus triumphed by rising from the dead, we have hope in Him; hope that there is more than just this life to look forward to; hope in knowing that God wastes nothing, using every difficulty in our life for some good. PSR families, meanwhile, have been exploring Creation, what it means to have a human soul, the difference between Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, and the four Gospel writers. In the process, students have examined classic artworks, have learned different forms of prayers such as Lectio Divina and songs of praise, have created posters and drawings, and have completed numerous learning activities. It’s been beautiful to see the children growing at home with their families, learning about God’s Word and the teachings of Mother Church together. Families will complete two more weeks of at home learning before coming on campus for our first Families in Faith gathering on Monday, October 19. If you are interested in assisting with Parish School of Religion or would like more information about these programs, please contact Audrey Huck, Catechetical Director, at [email protected].

Join us on Tuesday, October 13, at noon to pray the rosary at Mary’s garden by the Kern Center. It was on this day in 1917 that the Sixth Apparition of Fatima and the Miracle of the Sun took place. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us.

To: Clergy, Religious and Laity in the Archdiocese of New Orleans Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Mission Sunday will be celebrated throughout the world on October 18.

We remember the words of Jesus, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Mk 28:19-20 For most of us, the command to go forth to a foreign land is all but impossible. But we can fulfill this call here at home. Jesus calls us to keep our hearts open to the missions where our brothers and sisters face many challenges. The poverty and lack of infrastructures make their challenges almost insurmountable. Many dioceses and religious orders depend upon Mission Sunday to continue their missionary work. Many hunger for a deeper relationship with Jesus and many are persecuted because of their faith in him and the Church. As we know, the coronavirus has affected the world—certainly the mission lands. This gives them additional challenges. May we open our hearts to hear again the invitation of Jesus to go forth “to the ends of the earth” through our prayers, sacrifice and financial support. Pope Francis said, “The celebration of World Mission Day is also an occasion for reaffirming how prayer, reflection and the material help of your offerings are opportunities to participate actively in the mission of Jesus in his Church. Please respond to our Holy Father’s invitation. Wishing you God’s blessings and with gratitude for your generosity, I am Gratefully in Christ, Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond Archbishop of New Orleans
