We would like to congratulate the following TCSO employees on this well-earned recognion: Steven Ayala, Grant Brawith, Julia Carrillo, Sherman De Leon, Toni Earp, David Ghan, Mahew Gonzalez, Omar Guerra, Jusn Halliday, Darren Hausey Jr., Grant Jones, Miguel Lugo, John Myers, Alex Orz, Louis Pulci, Richard Redus, Crystal Rosains, Roxanne Smith and Kade Weaver. LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN LAKE SAFETY TCSO was proud to parcipate in the 2019 Special Olym- pics of Texas (SOTX) Law Enforcement Torch Run held May 2 - 4 in San Antonio at Morgan’s Wonderworld. Officers around the state carried the “Flame of Hope” through the streets of their communies and delivered it to the Texas Special Olympics Summer Games. This event is also one of the largest fundraisers for SOTX and raised $1.2 million this year. Thousands of people will visit county parks and par- take in boang acvies on Lake Travis over the summer months. While the lake can be fun, it can also be danger- ous. Remember to wear your life vest and refrain from drinking and driving both on the roadways and the water. MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH NATIONAL NURSES WEEK May 6 - 10 was Naonal Nurses Week. We love our nurs- es! These extraordinary men and women treat paents in the Travis County Jail and the Travis County Correconal Complex. Paent care within the walls of a jail facility is a unique environment that requires skilled employees who see a person, not an inmate, when offering care. Sheriff Hernandez baked cakes for our nurses and made a sur- prise delivery on May 8 th . Since 1949, the month of May has been observed as Mental Health Month in the U.S. and many naonal orga- nizaons such as NAMI, Mental Health America, and other affiliates spotlight Mental Health Month to raise aware- ness about the importance of mental health and to stop the sgma associated with mental health disorders. TCSO joined Travis County Health and Human Services, along with other community partners, as the Travis Coun- ty Commissioners Court recognized the awareness month in Travis County. DRAGON BOAT RACE BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY May 8 th was Naonal Bike to School Day. This event creates the opportunity for communies and schools to join together to encourage children to safely bike or walk to school. TCSO joined the Pflugerville Police Department at Wieland Elementary School. Even though the rain that morning impaired the bike ride, we sll had a blast walk- ing with the kiddos and helping at the car line! The 21 st Annual Ausn Dragon Boat/Paddle Fesval took place at Fesval Beach on Lady Bird Lake. TCSO’s Dragon Boat Depues took 3 rd Place in the Corporate/Community Final Division. Aſter the races and awards ceremony, the teams had a great me at the fesval enjoying perfor- mances, food trucks, vendors and a tradional lion dance. We look forward to racing again next year! POLICE OFFICER MEMORIAL MONTH Every May, our state and our naon pay tribute to peace officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. We make it a point to parcipate and to reflect. Earlier this month, the TCSO Honor Guard joined hundreds of others, sol- emnly making their way up Congress Avenue to the state Capitol where the names of the fallen were read and their families honored. Members of our Law Enforcement Associaon traveled to Washington, D.C. to parcipate in memorial ceremonies alongside our colleagues from across the United States. We also parcipated in the annual Ausn Motorcycle Rally and Tribute to Fallen Law Enforcement. Parcipants are both peace officers and civilians who ride together in an effort to honor peace officers who made the ulmate sacrifice in the line of duty. This year marked the second me we’ve hosted riders from the Texas Peace Officers Memorial Ride. The cyclists stopped for lunch at our Training Academy as they made their way to the state Capitol to aend the Texas Peace Officers candle light vigil ceremony. I hope you enjoyed a safe and relaxing Memorial Day weekend. As our naon took me this month to remember the men and women who made the ulmate sacrifice in service to our country, our state and our naon also paused to remember fallen peace officers. In Texas, we ceremoniously memorialize peace officers at the state Capitol. The TCSO Honor Guard joins with others from across the state in a solemn march up Congress Avenue. As the bag pipes play and the drum leads a steady cadence, we all move together in memory of the brave. Police Week is an annual memorial that takes place in our naon’s capital. Each year, our associaon sends several members. This group has the opportunity to experience vigils alongside peace officers from all over the country. They form lasng friendships and represent Travis County amidst the many. Our agency has lost seven depues in the line of duty. A memorial to them is permanently displayed in our Training Academy so their lives may be remembered by each and every new deputy who wears the badge. We will never forget. I welcome you to view their stories by clicking on the video icon buon below. STOP THE BLEED TRAINING BUILDING BRIDGES On May 4 th , TCSO hosted a Building Bridges First Satur- day’s Town Hall Meeng. Parcipants had the opportunity to review our 2018 Racial Profiling Report, learn about how to avoid becoming a vicm of auto theſt scammers and about our Crisis Intervenon Team. The purpose of Building Bridges is to bring a culturally diverse community together to build new relaonships and seek collaborave soluons that address public safety issues. To learn more about the Building Bridges program and schedule of events, please click on the icon buon below. Senior Deputy Mark Knight offered two days of special- ized training to TCSO civilians. In addion to Acve Shoot- er Training, he taught the tenants of Stop the Bleed, an advanced first aid program iniated by President Barack Obama aſter the Sandy Hook school shoong. Parcipants learned how to stop bleeding using tourni- quets, direct pressure, wound packing and an Israeli Ban- dage. Knight also showed them how to apply chest seals for chest wounds and how to maintain airways. The skills learned are a valuable tool for any emergency, including car wrecks and home or work accidents. TEXAS JAIL ASSOCIATION ASIS AUSTIN LUNCHEON During the 33 rd Annual Texas Jail Associaon (TJA) Conference, TCSO was honored with a few recogni- ons: Senior Correcons Officers Alexander Nares and Yeisen Oli- vas-Chavez took first place in the Courtroom Challenge, a trivia-style compeon. Lieutenant Edwardo Jackson was also recognized with the Disnguished Service Award for Exceponal Service and Commitment to The Texas Jail Associaon. Lt. Jackson is currently a TJA board member and holds a director posion. On May 22 nd , Sheriff Hernandez gave a keynote at the ASIS Ausn - Chapter 179 4 th Annual Law Enforcement Appreciaon Luncheon. We also send our congratulaons to Correcons Officer Desiree Jackson who received their Officer of the Year award...Way to go!
