The field of nanotechnology touches all the aspects of our life from the basic sciences of chemistry, physics, and biology, to the more complex such as medicine, engineering, communications, transportation, and energy. It will be the driving force for all the necessary advancements towards a hygienic, peaceful, networked world.

King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) with its strong belief in the power of nanotechnology, is pleased to organize the 3rd Saudi International Nanotechnology Conference (3SINC), under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, to be held in Riyadh on December 01-03, 2014.

This conference will provide a unique international gathering of nanotechnology experts to exchange their ideas on nanotechnology and its applications in different areas. The SINC program will include invited speakers. The program will also include a workshop entitled “KACST-KAUST-UCSB Workshops on Solid State Lighting”.

THECENTER

National Center for Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is a term that describes the field of science that studies and manipulates the properties of materials at a scale of less than 100 nanometers. At this size particles display unusual properties and products can be fabricated and tailored to achieve significantly better properties than can be achieved by manipulating materials on a larger scale...

National Center for Nanotechnology

The National Center for Nanotechnology (NCN) was founded in 2005 as part of the Materials Science Research Institute (MSRI), and KACST clearly defined the objectives and frameworks of its activities. The aim of the center is to transfer and localize nanotechnology within Saudi Arabia to meet national needs and developmental requirements in the industrial, health, agricultural, environmental, military, and security fields.

The National Center for Nanotechnology strives to ensure that Saudi Arabia occupies an active and leading role among the global research groups in the nanotechnology filed. The center seeks to take advantage of the various sciences related to this technology targeting to reach academic excellence based on scientific research and the availability of infrastructure that supports research and economic development plans to ensure economic sustainability.

Goals of the Center:1. Development of the infrastructure by establishing specialized laboratories to serve

research and development in nanotechnology field. 2. Conduct research on various nanotechnology fields in coordination with KACST’s

other institutes for ultimate utilization of this technology.3. Support Research carried out by KACST and other governmental sectors in the

nanotechnology fields.4. Training of manpower (Scientists – Engineers, and Technicians) in the field of Nano-

size manufacturing and its applications.5. Provide services and encourage the use of the centers’ advanced laboratories to the

private sector.6. Knowledge and technology transfer from the more developed countries.7. Support commercializing new nanotechnology products.

1. KACST/UCLA Center of Excellence for Green Nanotechnology

Goals:1. Undertake frontier nanotechnology R&D for mutual economic benefits to the Saudi Arabia and the U.S. and in alliance with the Saudi National Nanotechnology Initiative.

2. Train and educate the new workforcein nanoscience & engineering and support nanotechnology knowledge-transfer through exchange training programs and graduate students placements.3. Facilitate technology transfer and commercialization for emerging technologies.

Technical Thrust Areas:1. Carbon nanoelectronics: Develop carbon nanotube (CNT) &graphene-based transistors for next generation radiofrequency (RF) high-performance low-power wireless communication. 2. Emerging solar-cell technologies: Enhance the efficiency of organic photovoltaics (OPV) by utilizing nanometallic particles and various materials systems.

3. Silicon photonics: Fabricate highly efficient optical sources (III-Vs) on silicon to enable the integration of photonics and electronics on silicon, which will make chip-to-chip optical communication possible.

2- KACST/KAUST/UCSB Joint Program for Solid-State Lighting

Vision:The KACST-KAUST-UCSB Solid State Lighting program (SSLP) was established in 2013 to serve as an intellectual and entrepreneurial hub based in the Kingdom for the development of high-tech, energy-saving technologies in SSL, and will collaborate with existing and new Saudi industry and institutions to transfer the newly developed technology.

MissionLighting is indirectly responsible for about one third of KSA’s electric power consumption. solid state lighting (SSL) has the potential to revolutionize the lighting market by introducing highly energy efficient, long-lasting, and versatile light sources.

Our mission is to develop advanced photonics technologies for SSL in Saudi Arabia. In doing so, we will contribute to sustainable economic growth through maximally utilizing human and energy resources.

3. KACST/UC Berkeley University Center of Nanomaterials for Clean Energy Applications

MissionKACST and UC Berkeley collaboration will broadly include two cross-cutting areas of research such as porous metal-organic frameworks and nanocrystals. There is a worldwide need for development of renewable sources of energy and for more efficient and cleaner use of fossil fuels. Our target materials will have use in efficient separation of hydrocarbons, carbon capture from flue gas, gas conversion to liquid fuels, and solar energy conversion.

4. KACST/Northwestern University Center of Excellence for Nano-Biology

Goals: ■ Conducting research and studies for the development of innovative ways for drug delivery technology in field of nano-biotechnology.

■ Using Mechanostereochemistry for wide range of applications

■ Exchange of visits, expertise and training in the fields of education and scientific research.

■ Mutual cooperation in the initial studies for the possibility of exploratory development programs and collaborative research projects in areas that are common to both parties and fit in the Saudi National Strategic Plan.

Research Projects: ■ Develop an innovative way to address the treatment of diabetes (insulin) by mouth instead of using the usual injection.

■ Using nano-porous glass capsules prepared chemically in the dynamic delivery systems for Drug Delivery Systems through the following projects:

- Antibiotics resistant bugs (MRSA Superbugs)

- Absorption of vitamins.

- Reduce obesity.

■ Develop new materials for advance applications in medicine.

5. KACST/UC San Diego Center of Excellence in Nanomedicine

Mission:The joint KACST-UC San Diego Center of Excellence in Nanomedicine (CEN) was established late in 2010 with the mission to develop novel nano- and biomaterials that will enable the future of biological research and medicine. CEN researchers seek to create tools that enable studies and therapies to take place in ways that few dare to imagine, in which imaging signals turn on only in the presence of specific disease cues, or implanted materials integrate seamlessly with host tissue.

Research Areas: ■ Bioresponsive and light-controlled materials - Molecular engineering of materials to target molecules to areas of disease through biologically- or externally-triggered degradation.

■ Next-generation diagnostic imaging agents - High contrast, targetable, activatable magnetic resonance (MRI) contrast agents to reduce reliance on ionizing radiation.

■ Tissue engineering - Biomimetic structures to enable study of complex biological processes, currently only accessible in animal models, in vitro.

■ In vivo regeneration - Development of materials to promote healing of severe injuries such as heart attack damage and retinal degeneration.

6. KACST-Oxford Petrochemicals Research Center (KOPRC)

Goals:The joint scientific cooperation between KACST and the University of Oxford (KOPRC) is one of a kind in the Arab world in the refining and petrochemical fields and comes within the strategic plan set by KACST with the aim of transferring and localization petrochemicals technology in the Kingdom.

The objectives of the center are: ■ Exchanging scientists between KACST and the University of Oxford for the purpose of technology exchange.

■ Sharing technical and analytical information.

■ Hosting in Oxford suitable manpower from KACST for the purpose of collaborative research activities in connection with KOPRC.

■ Connect with other leading centers in the world in the field of petrochemicals and petroleum refinery.

■ Support suitable staff from KACST in applying to Masters and D.Phil courses at the University of Oxford.

Research Projects: ■ Developing a solid acid catalyst for alkylation processes.

■ Developing a process to convert the fossil remain of distillation to olefins.

■ Developing catalysts to convert carbon dioxide to chemicals.

■ Development of materials for selective polymerization processes.

■ Development of materials for the process of burning a clean fuel.

7. KACST -Synopsys Center of Excellence for Nanoelectronics Design

Goals: ■ Design and automation of electronic systems, particularly nano-electronics.

■ Exchange of visits, expertise and training in the fields of education and scientific research.

■ Mutual cooperation in the initial studies for the possibility of exploratory development programs and collaborative research projects in areas that are common to both parties.

Research Projects: ■ Develop nanoelectronics based ecosystem in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which includes assistance in building infrastructure for nanoelectronics and nanotechnology, progressive computing and electronic design environment, as well as advanced training by experts from Synopsys.

■ Facilitate the availability of Synopsys electronic design automation (EDA) tools and Curriculum for Saudi universities and research centers in the Kingdom.

■ Organize meetings and seminars, workshops and conferences on a global level.

■ Facilitate the development of advanced System on Chip (SoC)/Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) for tablet and Smart phone applications.

8. KACST/IBM Nanotechnology

KACST and IBM have established various research collaboration projects – focusing on solar energy, water desalination, petrochemical applications, and other energy related areas.

Centre of Excellence

MISSION

The KACST-IBM Nanotechnology Centre of Excellence was established in Riyadh on February 26, 2008. The center aims to address scientific and economic challenges as well as evolve research strategies and support in laboratory planning and setup. This is achieved by exploring key innovations in the area of nanotechnology and its application to critical challenges that the Kingdom may face in terms of scarce resources as well as clean and renewable energy. This center allows Saudi and IBM scientists and engineers to work side by side on cutting-edge research topics in various fields. Research activities take place in four laboratories located in: Zurich, California, Yorktown Heights, and Riyadh.

Center Objectives:

■ Seeking innovation at the molecular scale.

■ Resolving crucial energy and sustainability issues.

■ Training KACST personnel and transfer of know-how.

■ Training non-KACST researchers from Saudi institutions.

■ Patent mining and IP transfer.

CENA aspires to be a world-class industry-academia research consortium in the field of nano-processing focusing on:

1. Fabrication of MEMS/NEMS, autonomous sensors2. RF sensor networks & applications3. Nano-processing applications in energy harvesting and energy storage4. Nano-materials synthesis, processing, and characterization

Objectives: ■ Provide education & training in advanced processing technology to enable KSA & the region attract investments.

■ Generate valuable intellectual property to enhance the KSA and region’s chances to be technologically competitive.

■ Help bring an end to the “brain drain” phenomena from the region.

■ Create a platform for interaction and collaboration in the area of nanotechnology.

King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST)... King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) is both the Saudi Arabian national science agency and its national R&D laboratories. KACST plays

Main Responsibilities include:
