Letter from Principal Daniel Fuller

Dear Parents:

High quality teaching and learning is in full swing at Arnold Mill Elementary School as we complete our ninth week of school! Technology integration used to foster increased student engagement is a key component in all our grade level lessons. In addition, teachers are continuing to learn about and utilize new and innovative technology programs and apps that allow us to effectively assess student understanding of grade level curriculum standards. Our new I-Ready math program, for example, provides a highly detailed picture of every student’s progress in the math curriculum and helps teachers easily identify areas of strengths and weaknesses for each child. Our school now has three state-of-the-art 30-station touch-screen computer labs and three 20-station iPad2 mobile lab carts available for teacher checkout.

Congratulations to our newly elected School Council members Ms. Molly Ball and Mr. Ben Porterfield. These highly involved parents were nominated by their peers on September 12 and then elected with the most votes on September 14. The Arnold Mill Elementary School Council is now fully staffed and we had a very productive first meeting on September 16. The minutes of this meeting and all subsequent meetings are posted on the school website in the School Council section.

We are very pleased to be bringing back the Fall Festival to Arnold Mill! Please mark your calendars and bring the whole family out on October 14th from 5-8 p.m. There will be grade level games, bounce houses, vendors, a petting zoo, face-painting, corn-hole games, a disc jockey, a cake walk and much more! (See page 6 for event flyer) I am looking forward to seeing everyone at this wonderful event!

Sincerely,

Daniel H. Fuller, Principal

AME Families,

Thank you so much to all those that participated in our Fired Up For Fitness Fundraiser. Today is the last day to contribute towards grade level totals. Every grade level that raises $200.00 or more will get 30 minutes of extra recess. The grade level that raises the most money will get the 30 minutes of extra recess and they will also get to watch a movie. We are so excited to buy equipment that will add to our existing units, replace Field Day equipment and add some new activities to our pro-gram. We hope students enjoyed dressing up in their sports uniforms, team jerseys, crazy hair and hats. It has been a fun week getting fired up for fitness!

Thank you for your support and generosity!

News from the Art Room

In Kindergarten, we are finishing up our unit on lines. We have explored all types of lines and created abstract art using the elements of line and color. Ask your child about our friend ROY G. BIV. He helped us learn the colors of the rainbow. We learned how the rainbow is turned in to a color wheel.

First grade is learning about the minimalist movement with a focus on Jasper Johns who was born in Georgia! They created their own minimalist artwork using their names as the subject. We learned how complimentary colors work together to make our artwork pop!

Second grade has learned about the father of the Abstract art movement Wassily Kandinsky and the important contribution that he made to art. We studied how Kandinsky used colors to create artwork that evokes feelings and we created our very own Circles Concentric.

Third grade is learning about the elements of an interesting composition as they create a koi fish with oil pastel and watercolor resist. They are working in an aerial perspective and applying the rule of odds to their composition.

Fourth grade is wrapping up a study of the pop art movement and the events in our culture that inspired the pop art movement. We were inspired by the pop artist Wayne Thiebaud’s gumball machines as we created gumball machines relevant to our present culture.

Fifth grade has finished their Roy Lichtenstein inspired pop art food posters. We discussed foods that are popular today in American culture and drew foods that Lichtenstein and Warhol would have used in their artwork today. Starbucks and Donuts were among the most popular with the fifth graders!

The Square 1 art projects are completed and I have shipped them! Be on the lookout for your child’s artwork to come home in their personalized catalog the second week in November.

Notes from the Music Room

September was a busy month in the music room! All students by now should have played at least one of the instruments in the music room, and most have played many. In grades K, 1, and 2 we have acted out stories and songs, played games, and sung and played instruments. We are even beginning to read rhythms! In grades 3, 4, and 5 we are adding new rhythms to the ones we know, learning patriotic songs, and practicing skills on Orff instruments. In October in all grades, we will be exploring the different sounds (timbre) that instruments make, and how we can combine them to create a “mood” or a “feeling.”

The Grade 4 students will present a program at the Tuesday, October 18 PTA meeting that begins at 6:45 p.m. Students should arrive at school by 6:30 p.m., go to the hallway outside their classroom, wear their class t-shirts, and bring their recorder. These students have been working hard on their recorder skills and will present some new songs they have learned so far this year. Please be sure to return the permission form that was sent home in regards to whether or not your student will attend.

Our AME Chorus students will also be performing in October! They will be performing at the Fall Festival that will be held at the school on Friday, October 14. Chorus students will meet by the side of the gym at 6:15 p.m. and perform at around 6:30 p.m. They should wear their Mustang Music t-shirts.

Thanks so much for your support of the Music program!

Musically,

Mrs. Amy Deihl
