The Lady Lopes were in the Wildcat Classic in Lit- tlefield while the Lopes were in Lubbock in the Cap rock tour- nament. "It was a good tournament for us. We played fiv e quality tea ms," Abernathy boys coach Wayne Ril ey said. Th e Lopes opened a nd closed the tournament with losses io two 5A sc hools . Sand- wiched in between were three wins over 4A Abernathy left the chute a li tt le slow in a 46-41 round loss to Monterey. "We dug a hol e in the first qua rter . They hitthethreeand got us down. We contested shots in the second, third and fourth quarters. They had four guys that were 6-6 and 6-5. The point guard was 6-0. They were hard to trap. They are a good shooting team and have a good inside game," Riley said. Chris Farr led the Lopes wi th 17. Nick Bowe added 13. The team hit 3-6 free shots. The Lopes pulled a come- back against Levelland in the second round for a 53-51 win . Bowe had 19 and Farr 16. " Trey Paden hit two three's in the third quarter. They have good shooters and quickness ." Bowe had 19 and Ryan Bufe scored 13 in a 58-51 win over Pampa. Bowe led all players with 18 in a 42-3 1 win over Hereford. Farr had 12. "We had a double digit lead to sta rt the fourth quarter against Pampa. Bufe and Nick had good ball games. Bufe, Nick and Farr had good tour- naments ," Riley said. "Against Hereford we played defense pretty well. We had good position in the zone. We contested shots and lim- ited their shots to one. We kept them off the boards." See EPS, page 2

Varsity basketball teams busy over holidays

Abernathy's Antelopes and Lady Lopes both competed in holiday basketball tourna­ments. The Lady Lopes were in the Wildcat Classic in Lit­tlefield while the Lopes were in Lubbock in the Cap rock tour­nament.

"It was a good tournament for us. We played five quality teams," Abernathy boys coach Wayne Riley said.

Th e Lopes opened a nd closed the tournament with losses io two 5A schools . Sand­wiched in between were three wins over 4A t~ams.

Abernathy left the chute a li ttle slow in a 46-41 o~ening round loss to Monterey.

He was born on April 9, 1930, in La Capita. He mar­riedJa nie Ma nsa nales on Dec. 17, 1955, in Lubbock. He was a United States Veteran, serv­ing during the Korean Con­flict. They moved to Abernathy in1956. He fa rmed a nd worked

for Wolflrrigation until retir­ing in 2000. ffc was one of the founding members of St. Isi­dore Catholic Church and was a member of the Sacred Heart and the Crusillistas.

S ue was employed in the ban king indus try for seventeen year s, retinng in 1993 due to health problems. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, the Sa nctuary Choir, Suns hi ne Singers and Opry GI'Oup.

Mrs. Paxton died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002.

She was born on Nov. 1, 1918, in Hollis, Okla. She mar­ried J. D. Farrier in 1939 in

New Deal and he preceded her in death in 1965. She married Stanley Paxton in 1983 and he preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1997. She moved to fro m Wichita Falls to Abernathy in 1965 and in 1998 she moved back to Wichita Falls. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include one son, Marshall Ray Farrier and his wife, Sue, ofWichita Falls; one sister, Sarah Graham of Aber­nathy; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren

In the Wildcat Classic, Abernathy's host team wel­comed them with a 46-33 de­feat. LyssaLutrick led the Lady Lopes, which had a 6-5 lead after the first period, with 10 points.

AHS followed that with a 73-44loss to district rival Lock­ney and a 63-58loss to Artesia (N.M.).

She was born on April 12, 1912, in Hunt County. She married Marshall E. Ledford

•on Oct. 23,1928, in 8ommerce. He preceded her in death on Oct. 15, 1991. She graduated from school in Fairlee and then attended Commerce Junior College.
