2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT “I’M BACK” Well, - who said a soufflé doesn’t rise twice – or is this history just repeating itself. It’s quite an unreal feeling that here I am, back at the helm of a great club, 40 years after we started it and also that not only does the club still exist, it exists very successfully with 270 members. I’m quite humble to realize all those who have served the Club between my two terms – often in my absence. Many have gone to the great garage in the sky and I paid tribute to them in my inaugural speech on resuming the Chair – also those still attending. I’m pleased to have an excellent back up team in, Secretary Moranne and Vice President Ian and they’ll need to keep me on the ball. I will have an occasional problem fitting all my other commitments – but this will be a priority. I also pay tribute to departing Secretary, Pat Fiedler after 25 years of great service – well done Pat. Also our long serving Treasurer, Merv Robinson – the finances of this Club are amazingly complex and extensive and Merv is certainly the man to do it, - well done Merv. Also I commend Moranne on great leadership over the last three years – very capable, efficient and has been a most popular President. NARC has been very prominent in the S.A. Vintage car, tractors and engines fraternity and through our excellent Federation Rep, Rob Leaney we have led with innovative ideas and programmes – especially the historic registration scheme. More needs to be done and I believe we need to return to the rolling 30 year time for cars to be eligible for historic registration. As I observed when I first addressed the A.G.M. I very carefully and respectfully noted that we are a fairly mature group – i.e. we’re old – and we really need to make an effort to attract younger members, or do we just resile ourselves to the fact that our Club is mainly for retirees – with cars no newer than 1979. I believe, that to attract younger members, we have to allow younger cars – i.e. Commodores and Falcons – How many of the early Commodores do you see, or even know of? A VC Commodore means as much to a 30 year old as does a T Ford or Capital Chev to a 75 year old. I hope you agree this is a debate we need to have otherwise without membership refreshment, our Club will not have a future. Also we need to continue the lobby process to get sanity and common sense in relation to allowing cars to display their original black and white number plates – without paying an exorbitant price at a so called “auction” with an unrealistic reserve on all plates. The boffins in Adelaide need to realize Car Clubs are not cash cows for cash strapped Governments – but genuine family recreation for all walks of life. So I look forward to the next 12 months and I thank you all so much for the confidence you’ve shown in returning, an old war horse back into the shafts after 40 years. With your involvement, I’m positive the Club has a great future and will achieve everything its member’s desire. Again, Thanks and happy motoring. Ivan Venning. Welcome new members Narc welcomes new members : Barb Whitelaw from Snowtown who has a Mercedes. Bob Smith and also Paul Reynolds both from Port Broughton Neil Stevens from Kadina Mick Tobin and also David Grace both from Clare Peter Ryan from Port Broughton who has a 1966 Rambler Mark Hill from Riverton who has a 1966 Falcon XP sedan Leah Chigney from Auburn who has a 66 Mustang and an EK Holden Trevor Altus from Tarlee who has a 59 Prefect, 61 Humber Snipe a 48 Ford 5 ton tipper and a Case 930

PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15 3 : The year began on a sad note with the death of our Patron John Hunt. Ian Denton later filled this position. I thank the Committee and members for their support and advice. The Committee planned a programme of interesting Guest Speakers, Events and Outings for the year. Meetings have been well attended with speakers covering many interesting subjects. Identification Night was won by Leon Darley, knowing the most objects. John Birrell prepared two films, the making and flying to Australia of the RFDS plane from Switzerland and a documentary on Maralinga and Emu Nuclear testing sites. Brian Beyer a film demonstrating 100 years of Laura Agricultural Bureau. Merv Robinson gave an interesting presentation on the Bangor Fires and Graham Bailey told members about attending the 100 year Celebration of Dodge in Detroit and showed film of the 1936 replicated Heritage area. John Miller on the restoration of his Zephyr convertible. Merv Robinson on the “Tri State Tractor Rally” in Indiana and Andrew Weckert on the climbing of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In January, members enjoyed a meal at Blyth before viewing the film “Paddington”. With the laughter throughout the Cinema it was enjoyed by many. February, thanks to Graham and family, members had a good night at Clare. Presentations were given by Allan Aughey on his 1961 E Type Jaguar race car, Ben Goode on a 1909 Stanley Steam Car and Brian Beyer on his New Way engine. Craig Thomas demonstrated some of Pauleen’s toys - a Potentiometer and a Pyrox Wire recorder. It was a big year of Celebrations and thanks to Graham Goode and Craig Thomas and all the helpers for their outstanding efforts in organising our 18th Rally and 40th Birthday Celebrations in August. Full praise for the excellent planning. Awards were presented to Rally participants and our Club Awards were presented for vehicle participation –Vintage (pre 1930) – John Birrell; 1930-50 – Brian Beyer; 1950-70 – Keith Napper; and 1970 onwards – Barry Treloar. The Opening of the “Huey” Memorial at Port Pirie RSL in August was a moving ceremony. Our Club’s Logo, in pavers, is placed in front of the Helicopter and well visible to all. Thanks to Marie and Graham Burgess, members enjoyed lunch and later visited the “Huey” and also the Port Pirie Museum in September. Burra to Morgan Run in October was well organised by Graham and Craig, two full days of adventure, the oldest car being a 1911 Humber. On November 1st, 30 members and their cars attended the opening of the Clare Valley Aerodrome, while some members flew in. Lots of planes, displays and visitors. Also in November our Kapunda Group celebrated its 25th Birthday at the Barossa Wientel, Tanunda. Congratulations on achieving 25 years. President’s Run in December started at Wolta Wolta in Clare. Thanks to Robert Parker for the use of his home and garden for morning tea and thank you Ian Denton for organising lunch at the Airport. Members should be congratulated on their efforts at “Power of the Past” at Mount Barker. Congratulations to the three individual members and the Club for receiving awards. March Swap Meet at Clare was well attended, thank you to Graham Goode and his helpers for their work in organising a great day. Inspection Day at Yacka included a tour of the Historic Town and in May the Club was host to the participants of this year’s Federation Run. NARC Members have participated and displayed vehicles at Bowman Park Fun Day, Old Car Day at Bethany and Australia Day at Greenock, Crystal Brook, Melrose, Jamestown and Clare Shows, Gladstone Country Fair, Bay to Birdwood, Laura Folk Fair, Booleroo Steam & Traction Rally, Moonta and Kadina Show and Shine and the Cavalcade of Cars at the Cornish Festival.. NARC has welcomed a number or new members this year, I hope they enjoy the Club’s activities and we see them at many events. I have attended many Kapunda Chapter meetings and events at which I was always most welcome. My sincere thanks must go to Secretary Pat Fiedler, Treasurer Merv Robinson, Dean and Sue Manderson for the Con Rod, Graham Goode for his help and advice and the work you all do for the Club To the Committee and Members thank you all for your support and friendship throughout the year, also to our Advertising Sponsors who help support the Con Rod. I wish the incoming Committee every success in the year ahead. Moranne Coombs.

THE END OF AN ERA - Dale has sold his workshop and has to be out by Sept 25th. To me the place looks very empty but too full for the time left. Unfinished trailers, Kid’s cars, a lathe, grinders, guillotine and folder all to be moved soon, not to mention swap stuff etc, etc. My ageing body daily reminds me I am about six years behind a good time to sell. There is pressure just deciding what to keep, what to sell cheap, what to dump. Sanity prevails despite the small amount of space to cram bits and pieces into at home. Nothing oily or greasy has been smuggled into the house YET ! Many things I planned to do did not happen. I did many things I never planned to do. It has been fun, Di and I have met and enjoyed the company of many people along the way and helped others get their cars restored.

8 SEDAN SWAP MEET JUNE 14TH 2015 by Malcolm Johncock I arrived at this swap meet at 9.00 am, as it was only a social event, I wasn’t seriously intending to buy anything. At this stage the car park was full and they were parking the cars in spots vacated by the early birds who had gone home. The oval was full of sellers of car parts, memorabilia and other associated items. Judging from the comments of one stall holder business was brisk. he said he had brought 30 second hand tyres and he only had about 5 left by mid-morning and wished he had brought more. I heard a comment that 400 people had camped overnight. I gather a local organization was doing the catering and this was a licence to print money. There was always a line-up of twenty or so people waiting, it just didn’t get any shorter. This was a little swap meet in the beginning and it has quietly grown like Topsy. Had better watch out or it will extend into the adjoining paddocks in the future. ( Malcolm told the then sub-editor that he did not see me at Sedan swap. Me thinks he was seriously looking for OAKLAND parts. He was one and a half metres from my stall at one stage looking my way. That is OK Malcolm, Oakland parts are far more important .) WICKS COLLECTION , BALHANNAH, 19th JULY 2015. By Dale P. Robert Stapley, resident of Lobethal organized the outing, something quite different , thank you Robert. There was a good chapter attendance with Con-Rod editor Dean and wife Sue also taking the opportunity to see this intriguing collection. The chapter French car enthusiast, Brian Woodcock was in heaven and all visitors enjoyed the cars and the collection in the little cottage as well. I do not know how successful they were but one car boasted the name- BEST. The collection began many years ago when all manner of cars were on our roads, but there were cars many would never have seen, rarer cars that appealed to the, back then farmer / car enthusiast. A 1928 Brocklebank is a car that probably never came to Mallala when I was a boy. We dined at the Lobethal Brau House, a very crowded place but nice to be out of the cold and good food even if some names left us wondering what we were getting. Thanks to Brian Haines for guiding us through 1,783 bends, twists and turns to get there. NEVER KNOCK SMALL CAR COLLECTIONS, QUALITY AND RARITY BEATS QUANTITY.
