People from all over the world travel to Haines. They take hikes through the rain forest and photograph bears catching salmon in the Chilkoot River. They enjoy a leisurely drive or float through the Chilkat River Valley watching Eagles soar overhead. They soak up local art and experience native Tlingit dancing and culture. They watch whales and marine life while sailing the Inside Passage. They sip local brews and grill fresh salmon after a day of fishing. In winter, they ski—nordic, back country and by helicopter. They snowshoe, snow machine, and ice skate.

These are the experiences people blog about, brag about, Facebook about. These are the experiences we know you will find in Haines—because we live them every day.

Alaska Marine Highway (Jon Hagen)

Unlike many other Southeast Alaska communities, Haines is connected to the Yukon Territory and Interior Alaska by a road. The Haines town center is about 40 miles from the Canadian border along the Haines Highway National Scenic Byway.

Although Haines does not have jet service, there are regularly scheduled flights from both Juneau and Skagway on smaller aircraft. Flying to Haines not only offers a faster journey than the ferry but also a scenic flight over the Lynn Canal. (see pg.34 for options)

Haines is a regular stop for the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System. Ferries accommodate cars and RVs, making it a convenient and scenic way to travel throughout Southeast Alaska. Smaller, private, passenger ferries also travel between Juneau, Haines and Skagway daily in the summer. Book a cruise to Haines! With limited cruise ship traffic, Haines offers a quiet stop amongst the busier ship ports in Alaska. Both large and small cruise ships tie up in Haines throughout the summer.

Roads take you from one place to another, but the Haines Highway takes you on an adventure: passports required, binoculars recommended. The Haines Highway begins at

the Haines Ferry Terminal and goes 150 miles through the Chilkat Valley and into Canada through British Columbia and the Yukon Territory, where it connects with the Alaska Highway (ALCAN) in Haines Junction.

In 2009 the 40-mile stretch from Haines to the Canadian border was designated a National Scenic Byway. Where else can you stop along the road in late autumn and see 3,500 eagles gather for one last feast for the season?

The First Settlers

11,000 years agoThe Tlingit Indians, whose legends speak of migrations from the north as a possible result of the Bering Sea land bridge, or from the southwest, possibly by sea from the Polynesian Islands, were first to arrive in the Chilkat Valley, home of the Chilkat and Chilkoot kwaans (tribes).

Living in an area so abundant in fish, game, edible plants and wild berries allowed the Tlingit to develop a rich culture and establish an empire that extended by land and sea from interior Alaska and Canada to California. Known for their trading, oratory, and arts and crafts, the traditions of Tlingits are still recognized and practiced today, such as Chilkat and Raven’s Tail weaving, wood carving, spruce root and cedar basket-making, and story telling.

The Tlingit were not the only ones to recognize the abundant resources of Southeast Alaska and the Chilkat Valley. In 1741, the first known meeting with white men took place when a Russian ship anchored west of Haines. Thus began a wave of trading with the Spanish, English, Russians, and Americans, and a wave of exploration and entrepreneurship.

By the 1890’s, three salmon canneries were operating in the Chilkat Inlet; the closely guarded trade routes of the Chilkat and Chilkoot kwaans were being used by an enterprising cannery worker named Jack Dalton to guide gold seekers heading inland; and Presbyterian missionaries were building schools and missions, bringing Christianity to an animist culture.

WildlifeHaines is known for its abundant wildlife. Animals can be seen practically anywhere in the Chilkat Valley, even downtown. Watch bears fish for salmon along the river. Take a boat or raft tour in search of moose, eagles and trumpeter swans. Peer through binoculars to spot mountain goats. See harbor seals and sea lions on waterfront hikes, or have a close encounter experience in a controlled setting. Numerous guided tours are offered and are a good way to optimize your wildlife viewing. Tour operators know where to go and are also able to reach more remote areas not typically accessed by those unfamiliar with the valley. Whatever time of year you visit, wildlife opportunities abound in Haines.

Haines is home to more than 260 species of birds. Some of our more popular migrants and locals include trumpeter swans, blue herons and bald eagles.

The Bald Eagle is definitely the star of the Chilkat Valley. The year-round population of bald eagles numbers around 350 residents. In the autumn months, however, this number swells to nearly 3,500 bald eagles in the Chilkat Valley making it the largest gathering of bald eagles in the world.

Each year in November Haines celebrates the gathering with the Alaska Bald Eagle Festival – seven days of activities, workshops, guest speakers, music and, of course, eagles.

Bears of the Chilkat Valley

(Tom Ganner)

Nothing provides a thrill quite like seeing bears in the wild. Haines is home to both black and brown bears. Although bears can be seen virtually anywhere in the Chilkat Valley, certain areas have become well known for optimal bear viewing opportunities.

The Chilkoot Lake and River may just offer one of the most accessible brown bear viewing experiences in Alaska. Although you can drive right to the river to watch these remarkable creatures, for optimal viewing we recommend visitors invest in a tour to the area. With a tour you are able to take advantage of an experienced guide knowledgeable about the wilderness, wildlife and history of the region. Guided tours also help keep traffic to a minimum on the narrow road and assist in keeping both humans and bears safe.

To minimize effects on wildlife habitat and make bear viewing experiences safe and enjoyable for you, as well as the bears, see the Wildlife Viewing page under “Discover Haines” on our website: visithaines.com.

Additional information is also located on the Education Bear Viewing page under the Alaska Chilkoot Bear Foundation website: www.bearfoundation.org.

Wildlife and Bear Viewing TipsKeep Your Distance – Never approach wildlife for any reason. Give bears plenty of space (100 feet) and remain calm. Stay together in a group. Your approach may cost an animal valuable energy and cause stress.

Time It Right – Bears are active on and off all day and night. Some bears come out at night to feed without the threat of humans. Respect the animals and do not spotlight or use a flash to get a photo. Let bears be bears.

Keep Your Impact Low – Do not try to attract an animal’s attention as it could cause them to change their natural behavior. Also, it is illegal to harass wildlife.

Keep Wildlife Wild – Never feed wild animals. Bears are intelligent and will associate humans with food, putting you and the bear in danger of being injured or killed. Feeding bears and leaving trash and your picnic area unattended is illegal.

Be Considerate of Others – Everyone enjoys the wilderness and wildlife in different ways. Be sure to respect private property and give hunters, anglers and others plenty of space.

Haines is an incredible place, in a large part due to the amazing people that live here using creative ideas, working the land and sea, and using local products to make a living. Be it harvesting fish from the sea, birch syrup, trees and plants from the rainforest, or just harvesting raw talent; Haines entrepreneurs will inspire and satisfy by turning these harvests into edibles, art, furniture, instruments and more.

Forest & Sea to Table...

Spruce, Juniper and Hops!

The spirit of Haines is alive in Fort Seward with locally distilled, small batch

spirts produced with a taste of Haines including

spruce tip and wormwood. Award winning Port Chilkoot Distillery, owners, Heather Shade and Sean Copeland, can be found distilling or pouring gourmet cocktails in the cozy tasting room in a restored building on Ft. Seward.

Haines Brewing Co. in a brand new building on Main St. Pouring handcrafted beers in a spacious tasting room. Venture in to sample brew master,

Paul Wheeler’s seasonal beers, including Sprucetip

Ale. Also find these brews on tap in bars and restaurants around Haines.

Forest to Table Combine the ultimate backcountry skiing with woodworking and you find Fairweather Ski Works Handcrafted skis

and snowboards. Using local Sitka Spruce, Birch

wood and often topped with local art work.

You may not see Zen Bathworks on Main St. Haines but you will find their beautifully hand crafted hot tubs

and Japanese ofuro tubs, made from local

woods shipped all over the world. www.zenbathworks.com

Keep your eyes open for other local wood products, like Rob Goldberg Guitars, handcrafted furniture, birch turned bowls and kitchen wares.

Sea to TableFishing is a way of life in Haines, with local fisherman bringing salmon in the summer seasons, halibut year round, cod, crab and shrimp. You will find the freshest catch on local menus, grocery stores and gift stores. Family owned smokery, Dejon Delights, further enhances the flavors of the sea by smoking fish with local birch and alder; oc-casionally featuring special flavors like stout from the local brewery. Look out in the waters for the local fleet heading out for the salmon opener and don’t leave Haines without experiencing fish straight from the sea to your plate.
