The human brain is not fully developed until between the ages of 25 and 28. Furthermore adolescents are 5-6 times more likely to become addicted to Alcohol and other Drugs than an adult would taking up use. The evidence is clear that until the brain is fully developed no consumption of alcohol or drugs is safe. Yet the National Drug Strategy Household Survey 2016 reported that 10% of young people aged 12-17 indicate that they are drinking alcohol at least monthly. Similarly, in regards to illicit drugs, while the rates of use by young people have decreased over time, approximately 10% of 14-19 year olds have used cannabis in the last 12 months; 3% have tried ecstasy, and 1% have tried cocaine and methamphetamines. In light of these concerns Windsor RSL, supported by Hawkesbury Council and the Windsor Local Area Command, funded the delivery of the ‘#NotEvenOnce® Drug Prevention Project’ across high schools in the Hawkesbury region of New South Wales. Teen Challenge is an international network of Christian faith-based corporations intended to help teenagers, adults, and families with problems such as substance abuse. The programs are designed to be age appropriate, aligned with the Australian curriculum and delivered across year groups. Whilst the programs delivered to the students address this misinformation, the core message to our students from the #NotEvenOnce® Project is ‘saying no’ to drugs and alcohol is not only valid and reasonable but is also the best response for teenagers. Programs like the #NotEvenOnce Project are making a difference. The National Drug Strategy Household Survey 2016 reported that rates of abstinence from alcohol have increased from 72% in 2013 to 82% in 2016. Furthermore, the average age of 14-24 year olds drinking for the first time has increased from 15.7 years in 2013 to 16.1 years in 2016. Students participating in the #NotEvenOnce seminars are asked to complete pre- and post-seminar surveys. These surveys consist of questions that examine students’ intentions to use drugs and alcohol before and after attending the seminar, and their knowledge related to the drugs and alcohol.

#NotEvenOnce® Drug Prevention Project

The use of alcohol and other drugs has been

identified as a significant problem for young people

both globally and within our local area.

The human brain is not fully developed until between the ages of 25 and 28.

Not only do young people become intoxicated faster than adults they also

won’t necessarily show signs of it until it’s too late. Furthermore adolescents

are 5-6 times more likely to become addicted to Alcohol and other Drugs than

an adult would taking up use.

The evidence is clear that until the brain is fully developed no consumption of

alcohol or drugs is safe. Yet the National Drug Strategy Household Survey

2016 reported that 10% of young people aged 12-17 indicate that they are

drinking alcohol at least monthly. Similarly, in regards to illicit drugs, while the

rates of use by young people have decreased over time, approximately 10%

of 14-19 year olds have used cannabis in the last 12 months; 3% have tried

ecstasy, and 1% have tried cocaine and methamphetamines.

In light of these concerns Windsor RSL, supported by Hawkesbury Council

and the Windsor Local Area Command, funded the delivery of the

‘#NotEvenOnce® Drug Prevention Project’ across high schools in the

Hawkesbury region of New South Wales. Because of this financial support

over the last three years Arndell Anglican College has had the privilege of

hosting representatives from Teen Challenge as they have delivered elements

of their ‘#NotEvenOnce® Drug Prevention Project’.

Teen Challenge is an international network of Christian faith-based

corporations intended to help teenagers, adults, and families with problems

such as substance abuse. The programs are designed to be age appropriate,

aligned with the Australian curriculum and delivered across year groups.

Whilst the programs delivered to the students address this misinformation, the

core message to our students from the #NotEvenOnce® Project is ‘saying no’

to drugs and alcohol is not only valid and reasonable but is also the best

response for teenagers.

Programs like the #NotEvenOnce Project are making a difference. The

National Drug Strategy Household Survey 2016 reported that rates of

abstinence from alcohol have increased from 72% in 2013 to 82% in 2016.

Furthermore, the average age of 14-24 year olds drinking for the first time has

increased from 15.7 years in 2013 to 16.1 years in 2016.

Students participating in the #NotEvenOnce seminars are asked to complete

pre- and post-seminar surveys. These surveys consist of questions that

examine students’ intentions to use drugs and alcohol before and after

attending the seminar, and their knowledge related to the drugs and alcohol.

#NotEvenOnce® Drug Prevention Project continued ….

This data, analysed by Western Sydney University, demonstrates a significant improvement in student knowledge about

drugs and alcohol along with a significant decrease in the likelihood that students will choose to use drugs and alcohol.

Loving the Community

Acts 4:34-35

There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the

money to the apostles to give to those in need.

Over the long weekend I was privileged to join the annual Hawkesbury Youth Mission (HYM). HYM brings together

Anglican youth groups in the Hawkesbury to encourage each other, hear God’s word and go out to love the community.

I saw youth cleaning horse poo at Riding for the Disabled, singing to residents in a nursing home, moving piles of mulch

for a local public school and heard about many more service activities completed. As Christians we were trying to show

the reality of what happened in the early church, as referenced in Acts 4 above.

In the Middle and Senior Schools over the next few weeks we are taking part in Take

Love. Take Love is an initiative of Anglicare to care for the needy youth in our community

(https://www.takelove.org.au/collection.html). Students are being encouraged to bring

in old, good quality clothing to give to those in need, particularly at this cold time of year.

We have been promoting Take Love through Chapels and were pleased to have Ash

come and share the value of Take Love to those who in need. One example she gave

was of a person who had been without food for six days being fed and clothed through

Take Love. I look forward to seeing our students give generously to this opportunity.

I pray that we, as a community in the Hawkesbury with so much, might be able to emulate the early church in giving to

those in need. We do this because we ourselves know our ultimate need is met through Jesus giving his life for us.

If you have any questions about the Christian faith or chaplaincy at the College, please contact the Chaplaincy team.

Last Friday students from Mrs Daly’s Year 7 TAS Engineering class competed in

the Australian Aeronautical Velocity Challenge finals at the University of

Wollongong. The boys in “Team Apollo 67”- Luke, Oscar, Daniel and Zachary

tomdid Arndell proud in both their Rocket flight construction and aesthetics

category despite the pressuring timed build against high class and experienced

teams from around the nation. Although Team Apollo were not victorious on the

day and experienced a disappointing overall flight time tally with inconsistent

launches affecting their final result and team goals, the team learnt a lot and

valued the opportunity to excel their classroom STEM learning and push their

skills and abilities in the annual competition. Well done Boys!

With the start of a new semester upon us now is the time to enrol your student in music or speech and drama lessons

with our School of Performing Arts. These lessons occur onsite, during the school day.

For Music the student completes 16 lessons per semester and for Speech and Drama they complete 14 group lessons

per semester. We also have a preschool program called 'Kinderbeat' which is a great introduction to music for our

younger students.

Students are encouraged to become involved in the annual concert series, which give the students the opportunity to

perform in a casual environment and to present the work they have completed throughout the year. We have had

many successful performers come through the program and it is a testament to the high quality staff we have at Arndell.

At present, Arndell has a number of highly qualified staff in the areas of Brass, Voice, Piano, Woodwind, Guitar, Bass

Guitar, Drums, Speech and Drama, Violin and Cello.

More information, including the profiles of our tutors and the enrolment form, is available on the College website:

2018 has been yet another record breaking year for the Arndell debating teams. Five of our seven teams qualified for

the Inter-Regional final series with three of the teams progressing to the final 16. The final 16 undergo an elimination

round before proceeding to the finals.

Not progressing is our Junior School team of Charlotte James, Ivy Constantine, Dylan Wells, Aimee Bawcombe,

Kate Buckley and Harrison Rogers. This was their first season of debating and they did wonderfully well under the

tutelage of Rev. Clark. And our Year 9 Senior B team of Caleb Clark, Evie Claxton, Maylee Neary and Ben Webb.

The Year 7/8 White team of Bradley Campbell, Zoe Regan, Hannah Wood and Ruby Gorton fought hard in their

elimination round unfortunately going down to a highly polished team from Moriah College. Losing a very tight debate

in their elimination round was the Year 7 team of Brady McPhee, Natalie McMurray, Abby Peters and

Michaela Thompson. Thank you to Mrs Laroumanie for coaching this team and providing many lunchtime training

sessions, this team has really improved and will be a force to be reckoned with in 2019.

Still to undertake their next round are the:

Middle Team of Hamish McGregor, Oliver Baldwin-Marshall, Cassie Steenbeeke and Jordan Marks. Their next

opponents will be The International School (Sydney) this Thursday afternoon the 21st of June at Arndell.

Opens Team / Squad of Coco Chen, David Lavelle, Jessica Steenbeeke, Jake James, Joanna Nanthakumaran

and Will Franks. Their next opponents will be The Lakes Grammar School (Newcastle) this Thursday afternoon

the 21st of June at Arndell.

Year 10 Team, defending HICES Senior Champions, of Gemma Thompson, Noah Shean, Clayton Isaacs, Teale

Simmons and Caitlin Pellew will face Hunter Valley Grammar School at the Hunter Valley at a date yet to be

determined.

Congratulations to all our teams on their outstanding efforts and best wishes to the teams still in the running.

Year Nine Photographic and Digital Media excursion

As part of their studies into the photography of Urban spaces,

Year 9 Photographic and Digital Media students visited the city

for a hands on day to practise their skills. They first visited the

Museum of Contemporary Art where they took part in a

workshop that utilised green screens to make short films. They

then went on a walking tour of the city and Rocks area to take

photographs that convey a narrative about different aspects of

city life. Their completed images will go on display at the

upcoming art show in Term 3.
