AFC Sudbury in partnership with VLUK aims to provide a high quality, unique vocational learning experience, with practical and theoretical teaching embedded into flexible programmes.
We currently offer undergraduate programmes offering Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND), Foundation and Honours Degree.
We honour the importance of a realistic balance between the focus on both your educational development and industry experience. Our bespoke course structure gives you the best of both worlds. Based at the state of art Kingsmarsh Stadium, students will benefit from working in an elite sporting environment
This will give you a considerable headstart on the competition, when it comes to finding your dream job in the sport of your choice.
Entry Requirements
96 UCAS points plus GCSE Maths and English (grades A*-C), or equiva-lent, or Access to Higher Education Certificate, or ABE Certificate in Busi-ness. Applicants without the above criteria will be interviewed to assess acacademic suitability. The course suits mature students looking to gain formal qualifications to back up coaching badges and other industry qualifications.
Course Structure
The course structure will comprise of one and a half contact days to al-low candidates to either continue to work within sport or gain the work experience needed to progress. We can provide a valuable advantage in these placements, and subsequently when it comes to applying for a job if work experience is required.
Course Description
The Higher National Certificate course is a BTEC modular course with the HNC running for one year looking at core units of Applied Sports Coach-ing, Evolution of Sport Development and the Sport & Leisure Industry as well as topics such as Managing Resources in Sport & Leisure Manage-ment.
The Higher National Degree course either builds on the knowledge learnt on the HNC as the same modules are studied or is a two year course in its own right. The HND is a level 4 course in the first year before progressing onto a higher level of study, Level 5 in the second year. Lev-el 5 is the equivalent of a second year undergraduate programme. The core modules include those of the HNC in addition to Event Manage-ment, an indepth Research Project and a Personal / Professional Devel-opment Module.

Course Content
The BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Sport is a qualification with a mini-mum of 120 credits (it can stand alone or act as the first year for the two year HND course).
The BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Sport is a qualification with a minimum of 240 credits.

As a learner on one of our programmes, you will be taught in the classroom by a fully qualified, experienced VLUK tutor, many of whom have a strong background in coaching and playing sports. Along with our tutors, VLUK has identified the advantage of involving industry spe-cialists to deliver teaching at our clubs including specialist lectures from clubs nutritionists, sports development officers, coaching opportunities in the professional clubs academies along with much more. This is a great benefit to our students and supports them through their work experience as well as broadening their opportunities in the future.

VLUK is a registered training organisation with theDepartment for Education and Skills (DfES) and Educa-tion and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and have passed stringent annual due diligence checks to be allowed to deliver fully accredited, vocational qualifications to over 1,200 young people each year. We are proud that the programmes we offer have consistent retention and achievement rates of 95%+ per year.

You will be provided with an Individual Learning Plan, which is updated with support from your tutor and used regularly to help track progress against your Minimum Target Grade. The ILP is also used to set goals that are in line with personal academic and career aspirations.
Work Experience
VLUK honour the importance of a realistic balance between the focus on both your educational development and industry experience. The work experience element of the Higher National Diploma in Sport: Coaching and Sports Development, will equip you with the employability skills to develop a career in the sport of your choice, with the potential to continue study to a Level 6 Honours Degree.

Many degree students continue on into Sports Development and coach-ing roles with professional clubs, National governing bodies as well as Management and supervisory roles in these organisations.

Danny Laws - Course Director
Danny has 25 years coaching and teaching experience. He gained the prestiguous UEFA ‘A’ advanced coaching licence through the English FA in 2002 and has held positions at professional football clubs, County FA’s and within Womens football. He has also served as a Dept Head in Further Education Colleges. Danny has coached in the USA and is a very experienced coach educated to Level 3.
