If they got the riddle correct they could pass without harm. If they got itwrong they were killed. So far no one had ever solved the riddle. Oedipus was ask theriddle by the Sphinx What animal is that which in the morning goes on four feet, atnoon on two and in the evening upon three?. Oedipus answered Man, who inchildhood creeps on hands and knees, in manhood walks erect and in old age with theaid of a staff. The Sphinx was so upset that he got it right it killed itself.

The people were so grateful to Oedipus they made him their king by giving him theirqueen Jocasta as his wife. Oedipus did not know who his parents were; he had alreadykilled his father, the king, and how he had married his mother. Thebes was then struckwith a famine. They consulted an oracle who revealed the double crime of Oedipus.Jocasta then killed herself and Oedipus went mad, tore out his own eyes and wandereduntil he died.

So he could get revenge on thesuitors he did not want to be recognized so Minerva made him look like a beggar.

Ulysses son Telemachus had gone looking for his father but Minerva told him to returnhome. He did and found Eumaeus with a beggar. Mumaeus told Telemachus what washapping with the suitors and they planned to kill him. Eumaeus then went to the palaceto tell Penelope (Thelemachus mom and Ulysses wife) that her son was back.
