Dear Parents,

The Parent Coffee Mornings happening every Wednesday are a great time for our parents to learn about important ways to partner with the school in order to support your child’s education.

I would like to express a huge thank you to all the parents that have come out to the meetings this quarter. I would also like to thank Dr. Rachel Iannacone, AISC’s Middle School Social Studies Teacher, Coordinator of Cultural Heritage Studies and Research Writing Coordinator, for leading the series of Grade 5-10 Parent Coffee Mornings and for teaching our parents how to help their child paraphrase properly at home by using note-taking strategies. This was a widely-popular parent coffee morning topic. All the parents really enjoyed getting to know and learning from Dr. Iannacone, and having a better understanding between paraphrasing and plagiarizing. All of our parents walked away with an increased number of tools in their parent toolkit.

When our parents get involved at this level, we build a collective efficacy that powerfully impacts student achievement. Giving parents opportunities to be our partners can be a huge game changer when it comes to student learning, and this was a great example of partnership at work at AISC.

Extended Essays The class of 2018 began working on their Extended Essays in February. Ten months and many hours later, they are almost ready to submit them to the IB. Following are their comments, and words of advice for the class of 2019. The question posed was, describe what you learned from the EE process. “Requires organization and to works towards the deadlines.” -Giorgos “It’s about sticking to it and as long as you stick to it and follow deadlines, it can be manageable.” -Orestis “Initially EE is overwhelming, but gets progressively easier.” –Aman “It is important to plan ahead.” – Amit “If you focus on one big task for three days in a row, during the June workshop days, you will finish most of the EE . Bless the gods for the three-day workshop.” -Karim “EE taught me a lot, but during the process I sacrificed a bit of my soul. I mean that it takes something out of you to work for so hard for so long because you are giving so much of yourself.” -Calisto “It was exhausting and horrible, but I’m done.” –Alina “Everyone has to go through it in university, so it’s horrible but it prepares you.” –Lora Ms. Houston

Counselor’s Corner Hello AISC Elementary Parents!! We’ve been working hard and looking deeply into many different aspects of self this last week in our Character Education classes. Depending on our grade level, we have explored the themes of friendship, mindfulness, self-awareness, sportsmanship, and tattling! I encourage you to ask your children about what they’ve been talking about in class, and hopefully the results will be a good conversation for you to model and practice some mindfulness techniques at home! As always, please feel free to contact me about questions, tips, or methods in which you may have an interest!

Thank you,

Noah Hayes-McKeirnan [email protected]

From the Middle and High School Counseling Office: Greetings Parents, Over the next few weeks in Guidance Seminar we will begin career and university exploration. This is a great opportunity for you to have meaningful conversations at home with your child about the different career opportunities and how they can start preparing while they are still in secondary school. Here are some tips for helping your student engage with career exploration.

1. Learn more about your child -- what are his or her interests, hobbies, passions, goals, dreams for their future lives? Help steer the conversation away from "money" jobs and talk about opportunities that align with their interests.

2. Identify some possibilities -- Encourage research. Is your child really interested in graphic novels? What types of careers might be available that would be related? Writer, illustrator, editor, publisher, bookbinding, librarian, newspaper columnist/comic writer, political cartoonist, literary agent, web design, intellectual property law, are just a few of the possibilities.

3. Evaluate the options -- Help your child think through the future of the careers they are exploring. How much education will be needed? What courses will your child need in secondary school to be prepared for university study in that field? Will this career still exist in 10-15 years? How will their training prepare them for alternative careers if they decide to change later in life?

4. Ask what they are learning in Guidance Seminar -- keep the conversations going at home. The truth is careers that don't even exist yet will be possibilities for your child. The better they know themselves, their interests, and their goals, the better prepared they will be for the ever changing careers landscape of our global society. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment for further discussing your child and his or her career and academic goals. Library Curious about the world around you? Or, even the small world of your daily life, such as the choices you feel compelled to make? The AISC library is the place to make such discoveries and find information on virtually every topic in just about every corner of the globe. This is not about books necessarily, but about the databases available to all library users. Through EBSCO, or ERIC, for example, accessed through the library webpage (http://library.aisc.ac.cy/common/servlet/presenthomeform.do?l2m=Home&tm=Home), one can explore thousands of journals, magazines, and newspapers on every conceivable idea or topic. If you know the title of a journal but are denied access on the internet, we have JSTOR which allows the AISC community to find thousands of journals and academic periodicals. WebPath Express in another feature that offers internet links to all AISC curricular subjects taught, in addition to many, many more. Come visit, stay awhile—you never know what you might find. Diabetes Awareness Month

November is diabetes awareness month. In order to raise awareness, the school is collaborating with the Cyprus Diabetic Association. A former teacher at AISC Mrs. Yioula Demetriou will come to school to give a speech to Middle School students on the 28th of November mixing math, physics and nutrition on an interesting talk to introduce them to diabetes and how dangerous it is. Until then here are some tips on how you can prevent diabetes by considering the importance of the glycemic index. If you have diabetes, you know all too well that when you eat carbohydrates, your blood sugar goes up. The total amount of carbs you consume at a meal or in a snack mostly determines what your blood sugar will do. But the food itself also plays a role. A serving

of white rice has almost the same effect as eating pure table sugar — a quick, high spike in blood sugar. A serving of lentils has a slower, smaller effect. Picking good sources of carbs can help you control your blood sugar and your weight. Even if you don't have diabetes, eating healthier carbohydrate-rich foods can help ward off a host of chronic conditions, from heart disease to various cancers to, well, diabetes. One way to choose foods is with the glycemic index (GI). This tool measures how much a food boosts blood sugar. The glycemic index rates the effect of a specific amount of a food on blood sugar compared with the same amount of pure glucose. A food with a glycemic index of 28 boosts blood sugar only 28% as much as pure glucose. One with a GI of 95 acts like pure glucose.

High glycemic foods result in a quick spike in insulin and blood sugar (also known as blood glucose). Low glycemic foods have a slower, smaller effect.

Using the glycemic index Using the glycemic index is easy: choose foods in the low GI category instead of those in the high GI category (see below), and go easy on those in between. Low glycemic index (GI of 55 or less): Most fruits and vegetables, beans, minimally processed grains, pasta, low-fat dairy foods, and nuts. Moderate glycemic index (GI 56 to 69): White and sweet potatoes, corn, white rice, couscous, breakfast cereals such as Cream of Wheat and Mini Wheats. High glycemic index (GI of 70 or higher): White bread, rice cakes, most crackers, bagels, cakes, doughnuts, croissants, most packaged breakfast cereals. You can see the values for 100 commons foods and get links to more at www.health.harvard.edu/glycemic.

1 WAYS THAT AISC COMMUNICATES. ARE WE OVER-COMMUNICATING? OVER-EMAILING? CAN WE DO A BETTER JOB STREAMLINING WITH OUR EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES AND METHODS? WE WOULD LIKE PARENT INPUT ON HOW TO IMPROVE IN THIS AREA.

Considerations include:

➢ Balance the right amount of communication for a large family ➢ Limit reminders ➢ Streamline communication according to Elementary/Middle School/High School, one email per family, and be more

consistent with subject headings ➢ Post events and notifications on ALMA’s calendar using a hyper-link ➢ Create a filter in ALMA so parents can filter what they see (options Elementary/ Middle/High/all levels) ➢ Set up reminders on the calendar (by grade level, Forms Deadline, Events Reminder, Homework, Islander etc) ➢ Synchronize ALMA with parent’s personal calendar ➢ Train parents on how to use the ALMA calendar ➢ Categorize what is being received from school (one email per family) ➢ Include a hyperlink to ALMA when sending out the report card notification ➢ If school tries to communicate with parents for an emergency or health issue and the parent doesn’t pick up, then the

Nurse should text the parent. This way parents who receive missed calls will know if there is an urgent matter or not. Staff can let the school receptionist know they placed a call to a parent to help reduce parent stress.

➢ The Director’s Coffee Mornings have been a huge success. PAC suggested a small editorial with photos should be published in the Islander.

The Director asked PAC to talk further with the parent community regarding streamlining communication and come back with additional suggestions in November.

2 SICK POLICY RE FAMILY HANDBOOK

A concern was raised regarding students returning to school too early after being sick and not following the school written policies in the Family Handbook. What are ways we can help prevent the spreading of colds and viruses?

➢ Use antibacterial soap/liquid ➢ Provide hand sanitizers by doors in public areas ➢ Remind parents of when not to send a child to school ➢ Remind parents of the sick policy in the Family Handbook ➢ Ask parents to sign that they have read and understood the sick policy ➢ Create child friendly posters on handwashing to be distributed around the school

3 MIDDLE SCHOOL ADVISORY – PURPOSE AND MISSION

The Principal explained the role of the Advisory and how often students met with their advisor. The role of the advisor is to act as an adult advocate to help students monitor academic progress, personal goals, help in getting students organized and assist with their study skills. Teachers who are advisors build relationships with students. Teachers can address student concerns to advisors as well.

Page 13: The AISC Islander · THE ISLANDER ... The AISC library is the place to make such discoveries and find information on ... If you know the title of a journal but are denied

THE ISLANDER NOVEMBER 10, 2017

13

In Grade 6 students meet with their advisor once a week. Grades 7 and 8 meet with their advisor twice a week of which one period becomes a Seminar period to help:

➢ Goal setting ➢ Time management skills ➢ Using ALMA and Agenda Books ➢ Locker organization/clean-up ➢ Relationship building with Advisor/means of communicating with parents ➢ Service Learning Projects ➢ Exploring interest inventories and university options ➢ Stress management & health awareness topics

Some suggestions were put forward on how to clarify the role of Advisory by putting more information in the Islander.

4 BUSSING CONCERNS There was a concern regarding the length of time students spend on the bus going home, as well as the route and the timing. The Director explained that the general expectation for the length of time a student should be on the bus is a maximum of one hour. Traffic congestion and bus breakdowns, are rare, but could happen, and this may affect home arrival times. The Director reminded PAC that all busing concerns by parents need to be addressed directly to Andry Vasiliou [email protected] as and when they happen so the school can best support individual cases.

NEXT PAC MEETING

• The next PAC meeting will take place on Thursday, 30 November 2017 The agenda and room location will be emailed.
