THE AKATHIST

HYMN

In our church, every Friday during

Lent a part of the Akathisy Hymn in

honor of the Mother of God is sung.

This Hymn glorifies Mary’s part in

the incarnation and is especially con-

nected with the Annunciation, which

feast always falls during Lent.

The four sections of this hymn each

recall a different aspect of the mys-

tery of the Son of God become man.

The first section recalls the events

which preceded the birth of Christ;

the Annunciation, Visitation and Jo-

seph’s doubts. The second stresses

the adoration of the Magi and the

shepherds and the presentation of

Christ in the temple. The third unit

presents the new life, the new crea-

tion which the coming of Christ ush-

ers in for mankind. The last part re-

flects the Church’s belief that the

Mother of God -- because of the

unique grace she has from God -- is

our chief intercessor with her Son,

the source of all grace. ____________________________________________________________________

Troparion of Akathist’ Saturday

Bearing in mind the mystical

order, the bodiless angel

made haste to the house of

Joseph and said to the Virgin

who knew not wedlock: “He

who has bent by his descent

the heavens is wholly and

changelessly contained in

you. So when I see Him in

your womb taking form of a

servant, I cry out to you in

amazement: Hail O Virgin

and Bride ever pure!”

االكاثستوس وترعرع يف أواخر القرن اخلامس للمسيح، نشأ

يف محص، عاصمة سورية الوسطى، منشد كنسي ملهم مل يعرف األدب املسيحي بعده، على ك ر العصور، شاعرا أرق إحساسا وأمسى خياال وابلغ منطقا: هو القديس رومانوس الشاعر، واضع نشيد املدائح لوالدة اإلله يف أربعة وعشرين بيتا،

بعدد أحرف األجبدية اليونانية.

تقام هذه الرتبة مساء يوم اجلمعة يف اخلمسة األسابيع األوىل من الصوم األربعيين، وهي مؤلفة من تسع تسبيحات وأربعة وعشرين بيتا. واألصل فيها أن تدمج يف أثناء صالة النوم الصغرى. فيبدأ يف ترنيم تسبيحات القانون بعد تالوة قانون

FIRST ODE

I shall open my mouth, and it

shall be filled with the Spirit,

and I shall sing a hymn to the

Queen and Mother; and I shall

celebrate with splendor and

sing with joy of her wonders.

O most holy Theotokos, save

us!

1- As the Archangel beheld

you, immaculate one, a living

scroll of Christ which the Spirit

had sealed, he cried out to you:

“Hail, vessel of joy, in whom

the curse of Eve is lifted!”

God, restoration of Adam and

destruction of Hades! Hail, all-

blameless one, unique palace

of our King! Hail, fiery throne

O Theotokos, living and ever

He who sits in glory upon the

throne of divinity, Jesus the

supreme God, came down on

an ethereal cloud and with His

pure hand redeemed those who

cry out to Him; Glory to your

power, O Christ!

FIFTH ODE

The universe was amazed at

your divine glory, for you, O

Virgin who knew not wedlock,

have borne in your womb the

God of all and have given birth

to an eternal Son, who grants

salvation to those who praise

you.

feast of the Mother of God and

the flame of paganism was

fleece whom Gideon in older

times had seen.

you! Be unto us a haven and a

heavy seas; be a refuge in the

ocean of our troubles, save us

from the snares of our enemy!

4- O cause of our joy, be gra-

cious to us: enlighten our

SEVENTH ODE

The three young men divinely

inspired, refused to worship

creatures instead of the Crea-

tor. But with courage they

trampled upon the threatening

fire and sang joyfully: Blessed

4- The extremities of the earth

bless you and sing your praise:

in their love, they cry out to

you: Hail, immaculate one, ho-

ly book in whom the Word is

written by the hand of the Fa-

ther. O Mother of God, pray

Him to write the names of your

servants in the Book of Life!


and ever. Amen.

4- We your servants implore

you, O immaculate one: we

bow before you and surrender

our hearts to you. Be kind to us

and save us who are drowning

in countless sorrows: protect

your flock against the snares of

the enemy.

EIGHTH ODE

The maternity of the Theoto-

kos preserved the three young

men in the furnace. Then it was

prefigured but now that it is

accomplished, it brings the

whole world together to sing:

O works of the Lord, praise

and exalt Him forever.

received in your womb the

Word Himself, and have borne

التسبحة الثامنة

إن والدة والدة اإلله، وهي بعد يف حيز الرمز، قد صانت الفتية القديسني يف األتون. أ ما اآلن ، وقد مت وقوعها، فهي جتمع املسكونة قاطبة لترنم: يا أعمال

الرب، سبحيه وارفعيه إىل مجيع الدهور.

the Sustainer of the universe;

you have fed with your milk

the Nourisher of creation! To

Him therefore we sing: “O

works of the Lord, praise Him

and exalt Him forever!”

2- O holy and all-immaculate

Virgin, Moses foresaw in the

burning bush the mystery of

your tremendous maternity;

and the three young men fore-

told it and described it in clear

words as they stood unscathed

in the midst of the flames.

Therefore we praise you forev-

ermore.

3– We who became naked by

the sin of old, were given the

garment of immortality by

your conception, and we who

were sitting in the darkness of

iniquity have seen the light

through you, O maiden, dwell-

ing-place of the Light. There-

fore, we praise you forever.



4- Through you, the dead are

returned to life, for you have

given birth to the Author of

بك يبعث األموات، ألنك حملت - 4احلياة يف أقنوم، واخلرس يحسنون النطق، والبرص يطهرون، واألمراض تطرد،

are made eloquent, the lepers

whole; sicknesses are driven

away, and the multitude of evil

spirits that roam around the

world are vanquished, O Vir-

gin, salvation of mankind!

5- O you who have given to the

world the salvation through

whom we have been lifted

from the earth: Hail! Blessed

and immaculate one, our pro-

tection and our strength, refuge

and shelter of those who cry

out: “O works of the Lord,

praise the Lord and bless Him

forever!”

NINTH ODE

Let every human being take up

a torch and let him dance in

spirit and let the immaterial

spirits celebrate this holy feast

of the Mother of God and cry

out: Rejoice, O all blessed and

pure and every virgin Theoto-

kos.

takers of the eternal joy, so that

we may be worthy to hail you:
