The feast of Saint John the Baptist is one of the most ancient of the liturgical calendar of the Church. It was difficult in the early days of Christianity to mention the figure of Jesus ignoring the figure of John. Both figures are interspersed, linked and associated in a very special way. John was born in Judea, son of the priest Zacharias and his wife Isabel, cousin of the Virgin Mary. He was born about six months before Jesus and his legacy as a prophet is legendary. Saint John dedicated part of his existence to preaching and sedentary life in the desert. From there his voice was heard, being perceived as a charismatic, assertive man and even something eccentric. In his enigmatic figure he possessed all the necessary elements of a prophetic and epic figure. His message was always one of repentance, reparation and preparation for the Messiah. His speech was voracious, dynamic, fascinating and denouncing. Saint John the Baptist did not beat around the bush with anyone. "Tell it like it is." It was precisely the truth that led him to denounce the decadent life of King Herod and his adulterous marriage with Herodias, his brother's wife. The truth always requires a high price and it was that which led him to pay with the price of his life itself. It was he who pointed to the Messiah saying "Behold the Lamb of God," referring to Jesus. His attention was not focused on himself but on Jesus, Saint John functions as an alive and clear example of what it means to be a prophet. He invites us to be active and vocal disciples of the Good News. What is the Good News? The kingdom of God is for everyone. He encourages us to live as sons and daughters of the truth, turning us into light that illuminates the passage of men and women in their journey towards God. He challenges us to be one body, one baptism and one spirit. We have to be disciples and prophets in our lives. This is not for tomorrow. It is in the ordinary of our life that we express the love for Christ through our relationship with our brothers and sisters. It is in daily life that we tell the world, by word and deed, who we are and what we believe in. It is in the struggle where we leave our mark as Christians, in the struggle as God’s people. Let us be like Saint John the Baptist, our patron, and let us join our voices to his as agents here in the land of justice, of re-evangelization and of peace. So at the end of our earthly journey, when we present ourselves before the mystic heavenly banquet, we can point to Christ and loudly say with luminous souls; "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."

La fiesta de San Juan Bautista es una de las más antiquísimas del calendario litúrgico de la Iglesia. Era difícil en los primeros tiempos del cristianismo el mencionar la figura de Jesús ignorando la figura de Juan. Ambas figuras están intercaladas, ligadas y asociadas de una forma muy especial. Juan nació en Judea, hijo del sacerdote Zacarías y de su esposa Isabel, prima de la Virgen María. Nació alrededor de seis meses antes que Jesús y su legado como profeta es legendario. San Juan dedicó parte de su existencia a la prédica y a la vida sedentaria en el desierto. Desde allí su voz se dejaba escuchar siendo percibido como un hombre carismático, asertivo e inclusive hasta algo excéntrico. En su figura enigmática poseía todos los elementos necesarios de una figura profética y épica. Su mensaje siempre fue uno de arrepentimiento, reparación y preparación para el Mesías. Su discurso era voraz,

dinámico, fascinante y denunciador. San Juan Bautista no le iba con paños tibios a nadie. “Al pan, pan y al vino, vino.” Fue precisamente la verdad quien lo llevó a denunciar la vida

decadente del rey Herodes y su matrimonio adúltero con Herodías, la esposa de su hermano. La verdad siempre requiere un precio alto y fue precisamente eso lo que lo llevó a pagar con el precio de su vida misma. Fue él quien señaló al Mesías diciendo “He ahí el Cordero de Dios”, refiriéndose a Jesús. Su atención no se enfocaba en sí mismo sino en Jesús, San Juan funge como un ejemplo vivido y claro de lo que significa ser profeta. Él nos invita a ser discípulos activos y vocales de la Buena Nueva. ¿Cuál es la Buena Nueva?

El reino de Dios es para todos. Él nos mueve a vivir como hijos e hijas de la verdad convirtiéndonos en luz que ilumina el paso a los hombres y a las mujeres en su jornada hacia Dios. Él nos reta a ser un solo

cuerpo, un solo bautismo y un solo espíritu. Tenemos que ser discípulos y profetas en nuestras vidas. Esto no es para mañana. Es en lo cotidiano donde expresamos en amor a Cristo a través del trato con nuestros hermanos Es en la vida diaria donde por obra y palabra decimos al mundo quienes somos y en que creemos. Es en la lucha donde dejamos nuestra marca endeble como cristianos. Es en la lucha como pueblo. Seamos como San Juan Bautista nuestro patrón y unamos nuestras voces a la suya como agentes aquí en la tierra de justicia, de reevangelización y de paz. Así al final de nuestra jornada terrenal, cuando nos presentemos ante el místico banquete celestial podamos señalar a Cristo y a viva voz con almas luminosas decir; “He ahí el Cordero de Dios que quita el pecado del mundo.”

Third Task of Catechesis: Moral Formation – Teach the moral teachings of the Church which are the fulfillment of the Command-ments. As members of the Body of Christ, our ac-tions (both good and bad) have an effect on the Christian community. It is together, as Church – the Body of Christ – that we grow to maturity in faith and become true disciples of Christ.

National Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is June 8. This dis-ease has devastated the Caribbean, and this population ranks second only to sub-Saharan Africa in the existing number of persons living with AIDS. June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. There are an estimated 50,000 new HIV infections in the U.S. every year. Some 20 to 25% of those persons living with HIV/AIDS do not know that they are infected with the virus and could be spreading it to others. The only way to know if you have the virus is to be tested. This national day of testing is an opportunity for people nationwide to learn their HIV status.

Know your status, get tested, and encourage others to be tested! Free and confidential or anonymous testing is available in a community near you. For more information, visit www.hivaidsservicesministry.org or call (312) 948-6500. Please pray for those living with HIV/AIDS and those affected by it.
