The Alpha Foundation of Howard County, Inc.

(AFHC) was created as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity to

provide funding for the educational initiatives sponsored

by the Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha

Fraternity, Inc. We seek to provide youth in Howard

County with academic enrichment that further enables

success in postsecondary training and education, and ul-

timately, creates a clear pathway for life opportunity and

success. Alongside community support and partnership,

the AFHC works in conjunction with the chapter to pro-

vide educational programming that assists our motivated

students towards achieving ambitious goals, including

leadership experience, increased scholastic performance,

and financial assistance for higher education.

Director of Educational Activities, Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter

Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter entrusts to its Education Committee the task of developing and monitoring educational programs that benefit the African American young people in

Howard County. The most visible of those programs is the Alpha Achievers program.

n Alpha Achievers Established in 1997, this nationally recognized program targets African-American males to achieve and exceed a 3.0 grade point average. The program also promotes char-acter growth, leadership skills and critical thinking, while encouraging its members to become full citizens of the school and the community. n Harambee ConferenceThis annual conference provides the opportunity for student representatives of Alpha Achievers Chapters throughout Howard County to learn and collaborate with one another during a half-day session. This conference includes voter registration for high school students under our “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” national program.

n 4Ten FundProvides unique educational experiences so students can develop the skills and knowledge relevant to the next gen-eration of social entrepreneurs. This includes financial support through venture capital funding for the student entrepreneurial endeavors that address social, cultural, or environmental issues.

n Alpha Achievers 2.0 InitiativeAlpha Foundation of Howard County, Inc. (AFHC), How-ard County Public School System and University of Mary-land, College Park, MD partnered to implement the Alpha Achievers 2.0 initiative. This is a comprehensive evalua-tion of the program to document and enhance its operation-al best practices for addressing the unique needs of African American male high school students.

n High Achievers – Go To High School, Go To CollegeThis program targets African American male middle school students through a series of extracurricular and school-based activities for the academic, emotional and social tran-sition that occurs upon entering high school.

n Project AlphaProvides education, motivation and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexu-ally transmitted diseases for high school age males in How-ard County. This national Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. program was conceived in partnership with the March of Dimes

n Ojise Oratorical ContestEncourages critical thinking and analysis targeting African American males of the Howard County Public School Sys-tem. Additionally, this initiative exposes students to impor-tant research, history and literature that is relevant to the African Diaspora.

n Educational Success GrantsProvides grants to encourage and support males who desire to complete Advanced Placement courses and/or exams, as well as independent research projects.

n Kappa Phi Lambda ScholarshipsThis college scholarship program encourages academic achievement and mitigates some of the college financial need for Howard County Public School high school stu-dents who are recipients of the scholarships. Since its in-ception, we have awarded over $350,000 in scholarships.
