The standard of football in all the grades continues to improve. We have been able to provide two umpires for nearly all our games, with umpire numbers (and therefore umpiring standards) significantly higher. I would thank (and congratulate) Brian Goodman for his efforts in his first year as our Umpire Operations Manager. I would also thank the members of the VAFA Executive, and in particular Chairman Nick Bourke, for their work. As with all our clubs, the Association is dependent upon many people giving of their time and efforts, and I would thank all those who put in the hours week in, week out, “for the love of the game”. I would also thank our hardworking staff for their efforts during the 2005 season. There is no doubt that their dedication to Amateur football has contributed significantly to the successful and enjoyable season that we have had. To the clubs participating in Grand Finals, and to the umpires who will officiate in them, the best of luck. I have no doubt that we will see great football. Bruce McTaggart President VAFA This weekend, the 2005 VAFA season draws to a close, with the A and B Section Grand Finals at Sportscover Arena, and the promise of great games on both Saturday and Sunday. Congratulations to those clubs which have already won premierships, and commiserations to those who missed out in 2005. While I am generally reluctant to mention individual clubs, it is of significance to note the fact that several “district” clubs appear to be on the rise. Beaumaris is back in B Grade, and Fitzroy Reds and Ormond have advanced to C Grade. These clubs have excellent, forward thinking administrations, and we hope that they can continue their progress. Congratulations also to Uni Blacks on winning back-to-back flags. Can they make it three in a row, and achieve a place in A Grade in 2007? On 27 September, the All Australian Amateur Under 23 team leaves for Ireland, and will play four games of International Rules. There are nine VAFA representatives in the team. We see this as a great innovation for our (and SA and WA amateur players), as it provides a focus and incentive for our younger players to achieve at the highest level. We are hopeful that the Ireland trip will become a regular occurrence. GRAND FINAL EDITION Message from the President

3THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2005V

Inside the VAFAThe VAFA seasoncomes to a climax withthe A and B sectionfinals this weekend. Ithas been achallenging andexciting year for mepersonally and for allthe staff at the VAFA.

Personally I have hadthe opportunity to visit matchesthroughout all sections and have enjoyedthe hospitality of many of the clubs. At allthe games that I have attended I have beenvery impressed by the manner in which theclubs administer the games. I havenothing but praise for all clubadministrators, players and umpires.

Much of the credit for the smooth runningof the competition must go to the GeneralManager of Football Operations, BrettConnell, who has overseen thecompetition. It was with mixed feelingsthat we received Brett’s resignation fromthe VAFA. He has been an incrediblydiligent worker for 12 years progressingfrom administration assistant to hiscurrent position. On behalf of theExecutive, staff and all the VAFAcommunity, I congratulate Brett on hisexceptional work and wish him everysuccess in his new position at the VCFL.

One of the key responsibilities of the VAFAis to supply proficient umpires to allsections. We are very proud of the factthat nearly all VAFA matches wereconducted with 2 field umpires and muchof this is due to the hard work ofoperations manager, Brian Goodman.Whilst other competitions are flounderingin this department we are getting stronger.I have no doubt that we have the bestumpires in community football inAustralia. Congratulations to Brian andhis team.

Representative football continues to growand is one enormous point that set usaside from any other Melbourne footballcompetition. The Under 19 North v Southmatch was a great success and GeorgeVoyage continued his great run in the A –D4 match against the Southern League. The Under 23’s had a great win in WA invery trying conditions and unfortunately,in Nick Bourke’s final match as Senior RepCoach, his team battled valiantly buteventually lost to a talented VCFL.

For the first time an Australian Amateurteam will travel to Ireland and play fourmatches in Dublin, Galway and Cork. InDublin we are playing against the AllIreland team at the famous Coke Park. InGalway the two matches are against theNational University of Ireland and thearmed forces at the city’s main ground,Pearse Stadium. Many thanks to thoseclubs and players that supported the $2day in July with the money raisedsubsidising three VAFA players’ trip.

One of the more controversial inclusionsthis year has been the front page editorialby Jonathon Horn. We endeavoured tomake that page more interesting to allreaders of the Amateur Footballer and notbe an administrative page. We are verypleased with the response to Jonathon’sarticles as many of them are controversialand instill much debate.

Finally, thanks to all the VAFA people whohave supported me in my first year as theCEO from the Executive members, staff,(namely Sue Anderson, Kate Balme, AdamClemente, Peter Harris, Tony O’Callghan,Cliff Bastow & Nancy McTaggart) and all ofthe clubs. Good luck to the teamscompeting today, congratulations to theteams who have already won premiershipsor gained promotion and well done to all71 VAFA clubs.

Two months later, theywere premiers. In atleast three of theirGrand Final wins, theywent in as underdogswhile many of their keyfinals victories have been upsets. Of course, several of the stars of this sidedidn’t go to the school at all. They havepicked up three absolute gems from Ballarat:Tim Clarke, Travis Ruyg and Mike Beardsley.Anthony McDonald, who is probably the in-form player in the competition at themoment, is himself from the famousbreeding ground of St Pats Ballarat andreturned to the Xavs after a successfulcareer at Melbourne. Adam Chatfield camevia Geelong and Pennant Hills in NSW.Justin Arnold crossed over from theDiamond Valley. Simon Lethlean fromCamberwell Grammar. But they all play thatfamiliar brand of football.

Old Xavs – Can it be done?Unless you’re affiliated with the OldXaverians, the name Kevin O’Shaughnessyprobably doesn’t mean that much to you. He’s the guy who guided the Xavier Collegeschool side to consecutive premiershipsdating back to the invention of the wheel.Later, he moved on to an executive role at theOld Xaverians and helped oversee their reignof flags in A Section. As the boys in Red &Black face their stiffest test to date, it’s worthconsidering just what O’Shaughnessy andOld Xavs players in general are capable of.You only have to look at last week’sextraordinary win over Haileybury to realisethat this is a side you write off at your peril. The majority of their players played underwhat the Xavs website calls the “sage likeguidance of the Yoda of the APS”(O’Shaughnessy) at Xavier and know what ittakes to rack up premierships. Ford,Ockleshaw, Woodruff, Lynch, Purss,Beetham and many others went to Xavierand play that brand of football whichcharacterises their school sides, their OldBoys sides and even the blokes who kickonto AFL. Set your game around a dominantruckman. Flick the ball out to your keyrunner out the back of the pack. Chuck acouple of guns on a back flank and give thema license to run. Make sure your players getin the gym and are physically bigger than theopposition. Protect your gun on-ballers withblocks. And discipline. Xavier sides arealways disciplined. One up one down, punchfrom behind, don’t get sucked in, don’tlairise. Simple stuff, but it makes adifference. More than anything, they know how to winfinals and prove everyone wrong. In 1996, Iplayed against them when they had won justtwo from eleven and were staring relegationsquare in the face. Dom Berry swaggeredonto the field looking like Marlon Brando. Wethought they were a complete and utter joke.

But Xavs, we have a problem…Could I talk up the Xavs any more?! Well, it’stime to execute a Crazy Ivan, shift courseand introduce the team in the Blue corner.Everyone I’ve spoken to this week, many ofwhom have been watching Amateur footballfor decades, say Uni Blues are the best VAFAside they have ever seen. You certainly wouldn’t know it by looking atthem. Most of their players look like the sortof guys you’d sit next to in a Uni lecture hall,en route to Naughton’s for a couple of AamirSohails. And they are pretty much unknownoutside amateur circles; while Xavs havealmost a dozen players who have been onAFL or VFL lists, the Blues are decidedlymore low key. Ross Young, their star of 2004,crossed over from playing social footy for theUni colleges. Mark Paterson, their star of2005, was coaxed into joining the club by amate who used to pump weights with him atthe Melbourne Uni gym. They have adeliberate policy of not playing ex AFLplayers. They barely have a player over 6foot. Their coach sits in the box crackinggags. Only when they run the length of thefield with a chain of a dozen handballs doesit hit home just how good this team is.O’Clouds Unfold!Only rain can save the Xavs. Mike Larkamfrom Channel 10 (in a chicken suit I believe)and Dermott Brereton from the Todayprogram (words fail me Derm) have bothbeen down to Sportscover Arena during theweek and forecast rain for Sunday. If it peltsdown and the ground turns into a quagmire,Uni’s runners will be bogged down and Xavswill turn it into a war of attrition. If it’s dry, write your own ticket. Any other year, againstany other team, I would go for the Xaverians. But against the Blues? You’ve gotta bekidding me: Uni By 75 points.Jonathan Horn

Good players aplenty for theHoers with ChrisBranigan, DarrenPayne and NickRussian stand outs. For Old Brighton LeighHendra worked very hard, Simon Williams inperhaps his swansong played well and theGadsden’s Simon and Ben made worthwhilecontributions.PREVIEWSaturday September 17 has arrived as De LaSalle and Old Ivanhoe travel to SportscoverArena to clash in the final B Section Game of2005. Both have had excellent seasons andfully deserve to be here as the go in search ofthe holy grail and the ultimate result apremiership.Having done the club thing in the pastfortnight and earned promotion today’sGrand Final is now for the players to go outand enjoy the moment and bring home thespoils for themselves and their loyal band ofsupporters. It’s like the clash of the Titans the youngerlittle rabbits of DLS up against the older BigBears of Old Ivanhoe. It was a titantic

B SECTIONby Tom Brain

Congratulations to Mario, my mate Kingy,Gerard Sholly and all the Old Ivanhoe playersfor shaking the monkey off their back andmaking a triumphant return to A Grade. ForOld Brighton disappointment but a goodseason none the less probably finishingwhere they were seeded.REVIEWPlenty of pressure on early with OldBrighton looking the goods with Toby Ewartcontrolling the ruck and Andy MacGillivrayand Adam Pirrie being dangerous up forwardthus putting the Old Ivanhoe defence undera lot of pressure.Second term saw the Hoers come backstrongly especially in the last 10 minutes asSjourke Price started to nullify Ewart’sinfluence setting it up allowing the big gunsof Curatolo, Payne, Russian and Geilings toforce the ball forward where Chris Braniganand Luxon were dangerous units.

The Hoers totally dominated the third quarterkicking 6 goals where as the Tonners couldnot trouble the man with the twin calicos.Brad Thompson was doing a terrific jobshutting down the dangerous David Dawesand with good assistance from Simon Kefalisand Chanz Crowley they led an almostimpenetrable defence, so that a 7 goal bufferat orange time almost certainly had the Hoersprimed for another crack at DLS.The first 10 minutes of the last totally snuffedout any chances the Tonners may have hadas goals to Payne, Russian, Luxon and thenBranigan’s 6th put the game beyond dispute, and the remainder of the game saw a coupleof consolation goals to OBS as the Hoers tookthe foot off the peddle a little looking to thenext week.

struggle in the second semi final with theBlue and Golds finishing all over the top oftheir opponents who must still be ruing theirinaccuracy.Buoyed by the week’s rest the DLS boys willcertainly be refreshed and will come outready to play. But Amateur Football providesmany twists and turns and sometimes in athree week finals series it is the side whoplays every week that is able to eke out someform of advantage. The Hoers would have learnt some lessonsfrom their loss a fortnight ago and certainlywon’t let DLS have as much latitude upforward as before, and if they are to win theyhave to play tight man on man football tostop De La Salle being able to burrow in andget their running game going. Healthy respect here for them both butunfortunatey there can only be one winnerand in an against the selection grain tip I wlltip Old Ivanhoe to reverse the result of afortnight ago and take the title. Good luck toall participating.

PRESS CORRESPONDENTS.As I put my pen away after another season Iwould sincerely like to thank Don Dowell,Andy Mullett Matt Clinch and Nick Parry fortheir detailed analysis of their games eachand every week it certainly made my jobmuch easier. To all the others whocontributed intermittently my thanks to youas well. Look forward to returning yet againin 2006.

TEAM OF THE YEARVery hard side to pick this year with so manyplayers having outstanding seasons. To thosewho have missed out please accept myapologies but I can’t fit you all in. Have beenfair and have made sure that each side in theSection has at least one representative.

BLACKS v SHARKS GRAND FINAL REVIEW A massive crowd packed into TrevorBarker Oval to witness the contestbetween ‘05s best sides. As a warm up tothe main event, the clubs went head tohead in the Reserves, with Beauy leading atevery change andrecording a hard fought18 point victory.Sharks supporters wereoptimistic the big gamewould also go theirway.Needing a fast start, the Sharks knew theyneeded to make their presence felt andwhilst the blue and golds went in hard theBlacks like nothing more than rolling uptheir sleeves and getting in and under inorder to win possession. A goal on quartertime to Matulick left the Sharks withinstriking distance, but there would havebeen some worried Beauy officialdom atthe way Uni was using possession andpressuring the second placed finishers. The Blacks midfielders were regularlygetting their hands on the ball withBatten, Costello and Matt Kemptonpropelling Uni forward at everyopportunity. By contrast the Sharks wereconstantly shadowed and there were

across the forward zone whilst Purcell andGoonan were miserly down back, notgiving their opponents any opportunity towork into the game. The crowd was being dazzled not only onthe ground, but also above it, as jags oflightning and massive thunderclapsechoed around the stadium. Much of thecrowd sought refuge from the downpourand even more were sent scurrying as halestones began to tumble. For the thirdsuccessive quarter, Beauy could onlymanage two goals one as Uni stampedtheir authority, bagging seven big ones. From the “it could only happen inMelbourne file” the last term began inbeautiful sunshine and the Uni playerswhilst tired, savoured every moment. TheSharks Haynes continued to wrack upstats and McNicholas and Heath foughton, but this was ultimately a losing battle.Across the ground Anthony Parkin’scharges had all the answers and withShaw and Bevacqua rounding off excellentgames, the Blacks emphatic 79 pointwinning margin attested to theirwonderful season and continued theircharge back towards A section honours. The Michael Ritterman medal for the bestplayer on the ground could have gone toany number of Uni players, Matt Kemptonwas a very worthy recipient.Congratulations to Beauy also on a terrificyear and they will be hoping along withBlacks to ruffle a few B Grade sidesfeathers, next year. play all this season! Led by Tim Davis &Conor Dullard, the Reds entire defencegave the Monds forwards no leeway at allin their scoring sector, nor was the Mondsflying squad ever able to wreak their usualhavoc round the ground. Both sidesactually handled the change from dry toslippery conditions mid-game veryprofessionally, but even so the Redsadapted better as they inexorablyincreased their lead right up until thefinal siren. In fact, there was an eeriesimilarity between Reds’ win and that ofUni Blacks in 2004, with Reds being evenmore impressive than UB on thescoreboard! Both our 2005 D1 GrandFinalists will be competitive in C Sectionand we look forward to watching theirprogress! Having extolled the virtues ofthe Reds defence, I must add, that theiroverall performance has been enhancedby the presence of a couple of lively true-boots like Phil Cianci & Kane Maghamezup the sharp end! Monds had top effortsfrom Shane Metz, Garrin Bailey & DavidRobbins in particular, and, in general,David Matthew’s 22 were a bit stiff toencounter such Red Hot opponents on theday. Congratulations & thanks to bothClubs!

RESERVEFitzroy Reds took charge of the earlymatch in Q2 & regardless of the OldMentonians’ endeavours, they were neverable to bridge the gap thereafter. David &Chris Alexander stood out for thePanthers against tough & unitedopposition. A great start to a wonderfulday for Chris Tehan’s Reds!

26 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2005V

The outstanding team for the entire year, OldGeelong withstood a third quarter challengefrom Rupertswood before kicking away inthe final quarter for their fifth premiership inthe club's 51-year history.Apart from their loss in round 10 toWilliamstown, only Peninsula had got towithin four goals of the dominant Ogs allseason before the Woods gave them the frightof their lives, succumbing by 21 points.Inaccurate kicking marred the first quarter, the Ogs holding a narrow lead at the firstbreak before piling on three goals to one inthe second term for a handy 20-point bufferat the long break.

But the Woods, beaten in the D3 Grand Finalby Oakleigh last year, refused to lay down, kicking three goals to draw within five pointsat the final change.Despite being unchallenged for much of theyear, the Ogs dug deep in the final term, kicking three clutch goals to ice apremiership which many had thought a faitaccompli midway through the season.Club champion Jamie Bell capped off abrilliant season, earning best-on-groundhonours from the Ogs hierarchy but theAnthony Fellows Medallist was awarded toSteve Lansdell. The premiership ended a 15-year drought forthe Ogs, but the challenge is now on for theclub to taste success as they climb throughthe ranks.Meanwhile, Rupertswood will have to gothrough another summer with mixed

memories, but thesour taste of aGrand Final defeatshould not take away from the achievementof climbing two grades in two season.

ReservesThe Oggery was the place to be on Sundayafternoon, the club having completed thesenior double by taking out the twospremiership as well. Tekka Verge'sundefeated team were never threatenedagainst La Trobe, conceding just two goalsin three quarters on their way to a 33-point triumph.

2005 SEASON REVIEWAs was the expectation of many followersof D2, Old Geelong took the flag andpromotion to D1 at the second time ofasking, after finishing third in 2004.Perhaps the extra year in D2 was ablessing in disguise as, apart fromdropping a game to Williamstown CYMS,and holding off a persistent Rupertswoodin the Grand Final, they were the best

team in this grade by some margin, andshould go on and do well in the highergrade next season. Rupertswood continued their upwardmomentum with another promotion.Unfortunately, it was another defeat in theshowpiece occasion of the season (afterlosing the 2004 D3 Grand Final toOakleigh), and it will be interesting to seehow Rupo handle another step up.However, I think consolidation will be anattainable target at this level for 2006.After a slow start, perhaps still coming toterms with relegation from D1, PeninsulaOld Boys found momentum a month intothe season and were amongst the moreimpressive performers in D2 from then on.They must be close to premiershipfavourites next year, and I wouldn’t besurprised if their form in 2006 mirroredthat of Old Geelong in 2005.Williamstown CYMS were the best of therest in 2005. They will look to at leastmatch that effort in 2006, but certainlywon’t have it all their own way.2004 D3 Premiers Oakleigh and LaTrobeUniversity were both still chances ofpinching fourth spot in the final weeks ofthe season but were ultimately unable tolast the distance. They will be looking forgreater consistency next season.Salesian Old Collegians were reallyneither here nor there for the majority of2005 after dropping down from D1. Theyshowed more consistency and quality for alarge part of the second half of 2005, andthis will hopefully bode well next season.Ivanhoe Assumption and Bentleighfought it out to avoid the dreaded ninthposition, and early on, Bentleigh appearedto have the edge. The second half of theHoes season provides someencouragement for next year, while it’sback to D3 for Bentleigh, who never reallymade an impact in D2, but shouldcontend for D3 finals in 2006.Finally, Swinburne University were neverin the hunt, losing all eighteen matches. It doesn’t look promising at this earlystage, but they have all summer to turn itaround.

CorrespondentsSpecial thanks to all correspondents fortheir input throughout the season, especially to Ivanhoe Assumption and

Swinburne University, who despiteenduring lean seasons on the field neverfailed to file reports. Without the loyaltyand support of correspondents, thiscolumn would be very thin on content.Andrew Wu & Peter Williamson

VAFA FINALS – NO ALCOHOLAt venues where a social club is in operation during the playing of finals, VAFA spectators,

officials and players are not to enter these premises for the purposes of consuming alcohol.

Each participating club is to appoint a person who constantly is to “patrol” the crowd lookingfor instances of people from his club consuming alcohol during the playing of matches

(particularly in cars).

This person is to ask persons contravening this VAFA requirement to desist. Clubs will becharged immediately under the VAFA rules of “conduct unbecoming”, when instances of

alcohol consumption during matches is observed or reported. Clubs must act first.

5 YEARS AGO - 2000Huge interest in the A Section Grand Finalwith Old Xaverians earning the right ofanother crack at St Bernards, their nemesisfrom the second semi-final. Opposingcoaches, Tim O’Shaughnessy (Xavs) andGary Foulds (St Bernards), had every rightto be confident in their respective line-ups.Mark Gibson and Tim Sutcliffe were the fieldumpires in the big game. Old Xaverians’reserves won the early game and gavethe massive Xavs crowd that extra bit ofimpetus as they accepted the Noel RundlePremiership Cup before the start of the maingame. After an even first quarter, 5.3 to 5.0 inXavs’ favour, the lead was increased slightlyat half time, 9.6 to 8.2. St Bernards weregreat in the third term and slammed on 7goals to 3 to hold a handy lead, 15.3 to 12.8,before the Xavs machine respondedmagnificently in the final term with 10 goalsto run out easy winners 22.14 to 16.5. 20 YEARS AGO – 1985In A Section it was an outstanding grandfinal between two great rivals, Ormond andDe La Salle. After a frenetic first quarter, DeLa held the upper hand 5.4 to 4.2. De Laincreased their lead slightly and at half timegave a hint that their experience may againbe too much for their opponents and thepossibility of a repeat of the 1984 grand finalresult loomed. Ormond were not to bedenied however and kicked 7.5 to 4.2 in thethird term and it was all level at the finalbreak. As De La tried to extend theirrunning game on the expanse of ElsternwickPark, Ormond went harder at each contestand eventually wore De La down with a finalscore of 16.14 to 14.11. It wasMarcellin’s great last quarter (6.2 to 1.4)that decided the premiership and the finalscore in Marcellin’s favour was 13.14 to8.12. Best players: A Cullinan, P Carafa,Amad, Paatsch, Holmes, Cooper (Marcellin)and Fish, Cooney, Berzins, C Stone,Matthews, Collett (Caulfield). This was to beMarcellin coach Neil Le Lievre’s second flagin three season as he had coached De LaSalle to the 1983 A Section premiership.

30 YEARS AGO – 1975St Bernards comfortably took out the ASection flag 19.13 to North Old Boys 12.10.Apart from the 4 point deficit at the firstchange, St Bernards were well in control forthe greater part of the match and built ontheir lead after half time to never leave theresult in doubt. It had been a thrilling dayfor the St Bernards’ supporters as theirreserves triumphed over Old Trinity by thenarrowest of margins, 11.11 to 11.10. De La Salle were premiers in B Section15.17 to Uni Blues 9.15 and had come froma goal down at the final break beforeestablishing their clear victory in the last

quarter. This was De La’s highestachievement in the VAFA to date and theirfirst senior flag since their success in CSection in 1958. It was certainly thebeginning of the establishment of anoutstanding record of success in amateurfootball.Michael Bates of the Reservoir Old Boysclub won the J N Woodrow trophy for thebest player in A Section. Michael had alsobeen an outstanding player for the VAFA atrepresentative level. John Morgan (OldScotch) won the B Section trophy.

40 YEARS AGO – 1965In their first year as tenants of the St KildaCricket Club, the VAFA hosted the A SectionGrand Final at the Junction Oval betweenminor premiers Uni Blacks and Coburg.Coburg had narrowly won their way into thegrand final from fourth place and after theBlacks started strongly, Coburg fought theirway back into the game to be only a coupleof straight kicks down at half time. Theyremained in the game at the final breakbefore the Blacks unleashed their full mightto run out easy winners in the final term17.12 to 10.5.In B Section Old Scotch were far tooaccomplished for Caulfield Grammarians,18.10 to 4.11 and had completely turnedaround the result of the second semi win byCaulfield. J (Jock) Nelson (MHSOB) won the J NWoodrow Trophy in A Section and GeoffWard (Caulfield Grammarians) won the BSection trophy.

50 YEARS AGO – 1955The Old Melburnians made it three ASection flags in a row when they defeatedthe favourites, Ormond, at Warringal Park,11.18 to 6.12. The OM’s had won a closecontest in the semi final, won thepreliminary final in the dying seconds buthad been at their very best in the grandfinal. A highlight of the A Section finals’program was the playing of the Juniors ascurtain raisers with Ivanhoe winning theirJunior second flag in three seasons.Coburg won B Section from Old Scotch,10.12 to 8.2. Coburg were undefeated forthe season and thoroughly deserved theirtrophy and promotion to A Section for theensuing season.

rammed on 4u n a n s w e r e dgoals to drawlevel with theWicks. Game on! Against the flow of playand with the back drop of huge claps ofthunder, Grace calmly slotted through asteadier before Byrne again chipped in,putting the Wicks up by 2 goals at the last

break. We were also lucky enough to see arun of similar proportions to the famous‘Gabbo’s run’, with ‘Bruce’ Mahonyleading from the front, racking up fourhandballs in a row, whilst sprinting 120meters up the ground. True Captainseffort!

The air of expectancy at half time turnedto an air of uncertainty by the last break.

What a great game was turned on byElsternwick and St. Mary’s! A hint of awalkover was evident early but to theSaints credit, they stuck with the task andserved up to the highly fancied Wicks.Loss of a game, but no loss of face.

Threats of the odd downpour but no windgreeted the sides on Saturday. The highlyfancied Elsternwick hit the groundrunning and but for some inaccuratekicking may well have run away with thegame early. Byrne was proving the dangerman up forward for the Wicks whilst Grillowas providing plenty of drive of the halfback flank for the Saints. A couple ofagainst the flow goals late for the Saintssaw it tight at the first break.

The evenness continued in the secondquarter as goals were traded. A heavyknock to Kodituwaku proved pivotal as hewas doing a fine blanketing job on thedangerous Grace. A freed up Graceslammed on some goals whilst therunners of the Wicks, notably Bedingfield,C Mahony and Curtain began clicking intogear. Five unanswered goals saw the leadget out to 31 points before a late Saintsgoal reduced the lead to 25 points at themain break. The general consensus wasthat the Wicks were starting to exert theirauthority and would be hard to matchfrom here.

A send off and the resultant goal in thefirst few minutes of the third term saw thewell proportioned lady running throughher scales however the Saints had otherideas. With C Armstrong winning everyball out of the centre, Wright barging hisway through packs and Crilly winning theball at will across half forward, the Saints

Had the Saints run their race? Would theblack and red machine click into gear?Despite conceding the first goal, the Saintscontinued to press. The men of the hourproved to be Mason and Thiele down back, who constantly thwarted the Saintsattack.

A snap from C Armstrong grazed the postwhilst fittingly Byrne slotted the winnerfor the Wicks.

Ultimately, a deserved victory for the sidebest performed for the year. No doubt thecrew at St. Mary’s wouldn’t be consoled byan honourable loss however the fact isthey didn’t die wondering and gaveeverything they had. Well done to DennisGrace and his team on a job well done butalso to Michael Learmonth and his Saintsfor providing a truly wonderful game!

Section OneMarcellin secured their first Section Oneflag in fifteen years last weekend, cruisingto a 61 point win over a gallant Collegiansside. Dominating from the outset theEagles were unstoppable in the openingterm, the minor premiers slamming on 4.8to just 0.3 despite the absence of sin-binned ruckman Mark McKasker.Jason Crapper was simply brilliant on thewing in the first quarter, racking up amore than a dozen touches while regularlytransferring the ball from the defensive toattacking fifty. Daniel Considine and JakeSymes were also in season-best form, bothplayers resolute in defence shutting downa number of Collegians chances on goal.McKasker returned to the field for thestart of the second term, but it wasCollegians who started the better of thesides kicking two goals in the opening fourminutes. However Marcellin soon steppedup a gear responding with six of the nextseven to set up a 52 point half-time lead.McKasker was a tower of strength in thesecond term, marking everything, whileshowing great skill and athleticism toscore a left foot blinder from deep in thepocket. Matt Turner and the athleticJames Winstanley were also prolific acrossthe half-forward line, teaming up nicelywith the on ball brigade led by PeterAugustin and Simon Abrahams.Down by more than eight goals at the longbreak Mick Jones asked for a big quarterfrom the boys in purple and gold, and thereigning Section Two premiers respondedwith three of the first four goals in thethird term. However just as Collegiansstarted to look like faint premiershipcontenders, Marcellin slotted through thelast three of the quarter to put the resultbeyond doubt.Slamming on five goals to two in the finalterm Marcellin confirmed their dominanceof Section One cruising to a ten-goal winin convincing fashion. never gave an inch and performed to theirutmost when it counted. In the final analysis, Rupertswood gaveBanyule too much latitude in the secondterm, when Tsingaris started to findplenty of the pill courtesy of Shepard-Mueller, Drapac and Skicko. Phillips was adeserving winner of the medal for BOG,despite falling on the losing side of theledger. He was ably supported byBaddeley, Anderson and Harrison (whokicked 4 goals). With a 4 goal lead at thefinal change, the Bears simply had totough it out against the inevitable Rupoonslaught, and this they did, earning themost satisfying win on the most importantday of the year. With both sides feeding their D Gradeseniors next year, I’d expect a fair few ofthese boys to face-off again in the seniorranks in season 2006.

Section 3Grand Final ReviewOld Paradians - v- OakleighAs expected, the opening stanzacommenced at a blistering pace with bothsides throwing their weight around whichresulted in some bone jarring clashes. Thepressure applied by both sides wasrelentless and the skills displayed by bothsides was well appreciated by the largecrowd. Rob Thomas was never going to BeLonely at CHF for Parade, the subject ofsome close attention by the opposition, hisendeavour and attack at the footballnetted him with 3 valuable goals and thePeter Harris medal. He was more than wellsupported by Soloman who was a focalpoint of attack for the whole game, inwhich he bagged 6 big ones. Pound-Gowrucked tirelessly for the vanquished, butwas no match for Matko and Kruezer, whoboth dominated around the ground withtelling marks. Oakeigh refused to give up the chase andcame back hard in the last quarter, withMacKenzie, Cleary and Edwards workinghard up forward to present for their team-mates ensuring they finished the gameright to the end. Overall, the Raidersrunning game, together with their tenacityand determination netted the team back toback premierships, which was a greatresult for the players and club.

Section BlueGrand Final ReviewOrmond - v - MazenodDue to injuries and a need to reverse thesecond semi result, Mazenod set up verydifferently and put in their most consistentintense effort of the season in the mostimportant game of the year. With their keyposition players shuffled, Bayliss (FB), Duke(CHB) and Regan (FF) had new challengeswhich they relished. Mazenod played freerunning, hard tackling, team football andwell deserved their lead at the final change. With a few key changes of personnel, theMonders hit the park and gatheredmomentum. Bailey, Barnes, Brosnan andUpstill started to have a greater impact. Afterbeing overpowered in the last three games adesperate Mazenod had held the ascendancyuntil the 20 minute mark. Their fiercetackling had stopped Ormond from gettingtheir running game going, yet the dangerousRob Chisholm, who would ultimately receivethe John Simpson medal, kept his side intouch with goals in each quarter. When Ormond hit back in the last quarterthey got to 9 points in front and againMazenod came back to 3 points, continuingto attack and were extremely unlucky not tohave got one of four thrusts through thegoals before the siren blew. For thevanquished, a feeling of devastation wasclear but they exceeded everyone’sexpectations bar their own. Bogar booted 6goals, whilst Crameri, Bonner and Dukewere simply tireless in their efforts.

Section RedEmmaus St Leos confirmed their pre-matchfavoritism last weekend with a crushing 86point win over Kew in the Section Red GrandFinal. The club’s second under-nineteen flagin the past six years, The Animals were fartoo strong from the outset and never lookedchallenged.Kicking six goals to one in a dominantopening term, Emmaus looked fresh fromtheir week off and showed no ill-effects froma fortnight without competitive football. Afterjust scraping home against Kew in thesecond semi-final two weeks earlier,Emmaus looked intent on proving theirstatus as the competition’s best side as theyoutclassed their opposition in all areas of theground.

Baranello, Brayshaw and Stafford were allimpressive in the second, and afterdominating for two quarters of football theminor premiers went into the long break witha 51-point lead. Emmaus coach Ben Pilleyasked for a big last half of football, for theboys to maintain 100% effort, 100% of thetime, and his chargers duly responded.Slamming home another four goals to one inthe premiership quarter the match was allbut won at the final change, before another

impressive six goal term ensured Emmaus’second under-nineteens flag since 2000.Nic Robin pieced together his best fourquarters of the season to claim the Max Lyonmedal for best on ground, his seven goal haulmaking up for the relatively quiet Croughanand Lalor. Hickey, Baranello, Brayshaw,Hartley and Ahern were all named in thebest, while Cochrane and Williams wereamongst the best for Kew.Cameron Nation & Fraser Cameron
