JokesA man received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a badattitude, and an even worse vocabulary. Every word outof the bird’s mouth was rude, obnoxious, and laced withprofanity. The guy tried and tried to change the bird’sattitude by consistently saying only polite words, playingsoft music, and anything else he could think of to cleanup the bird’s vocabulary. He became so fed up that heyelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. He shookthe parrot, and the parrot got angrier and even ruder. Finally, in desperation, he grabbed the bird and threwhim into the freezer. For a few minutes the parrotsquawked and kicked and screamed. Suddenly there wastotal quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.Fearing that he’d injured his parrot, the man quicklyopened the freezer door.

The parrot calmly stepped out onto his owner’soutstretched arms and said, “I believe I may haveoffended you with my rude language and actions. I’msincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions, and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct myrude and unforgivable behavior."

The guy was stunned at the change in his bird’s attitude.Just as he was about to ask the parrot what had causedsuch a dramatic change in his behavior, the birdcontinued, “May I ask what the turkey did?”

All passengers please fasten your seatbelts and preparefor take off. Today’s destination: a journey through the lifeof AE6AV. Please sit back, relax and enjoy your flight.Larry Plummer, WAMO 1566, became a member of the ElCajon Amateur Radio Club not very long ago, in 2000 whenhe took the Technician class. After a taste of theappetizer, he returned for seconds and thirds, completingboth the General and Extra classes. Larry serves as theclub representative for SANDARC and participates as amember of the Board of Directors. A very motivatedindividual indeed! Larry enjoys his involvement and claims,“It has been an eye opening experience being on theBoard and seeing the club form under its new leadership.”If there is anything Larry is satisfied with, it is his station. He is pleased with his cool, compacted concoction which isparked next to his couch on a glass end table that hecovered with plywood. He describes his convenientcreation, “I have an Icom 746 for HF, a Kenwood 707 for 2meters and 440, and a Kenwood 220 radio.” His “19”W x19”D x 22”H” station also includes three mikes, oneheadset/mike, two aux speakers, 1-4 position coax switch,3-2 position coax switches, one electronic keyer and onestraight key, all set up around a lamp which also sits onthe table. Larry is spoiled and says, “I think I live inheaven.” He continues to boast, “I can watch TV, listen tothe stereo and talk on the ham radio while sitting on mycouch all at the same time. Beat that!” Can anyone? Our well set up Ham came to Lemon Grove during the late40’s. Larry enjoyed growing up in the forest like areawhere he could eat fruit fresh from the tree. He spent theearly 60’s as a student at Mount Miguel High School. Hisafter school and weekend hours of his junior year werespent at Lindbergh Field where he cleaned airplanes for aflight school. This may have been the beginning of hispiloting career, who knows, but one thing is for sure Larryis a pilot.

CounterpoiseCounterpoiseCounterpoiseCounterpoiseCounterpoise Page 7Page 7Page 7Page 7Page 7

At just 18, he took the flight test for commercial pilot, multiengine aircraft, flight instructor and instrument flightinstructor and completed his training within 198 hourstotal flight time as the United States’ youngest flightinstructor at the time. Again, a very motivated individualindeed! He has taught in San Diego area flight schools aswell as fly for Bank Air.Larry worked with Japan Airlines, along with All NipponAirlines and Saudi Arabian International Airlines where hereceived the great honor of being recognized as anapproved instructor by the Japanese Civil AeronauticBoard. Few people outside of Japan ever receive such anhonor. As the aerospace industry slowed during the 80’s,Larry moved to San Diego to work for the San DiegoTrolley, Inc. He promises that we will enjoy riding thetrolley as he looks forward to the opening of a new line toState College. As Larry continues along his flight through life, he remainsinvolved with the Club and enjoys his perfect station athome. As for the rest of us, please fasten your seatbeltsand prepare to land. Our final stop: the Ham Spotlight! Nolonger just a voice on the radio, the spotlight shines onLarry Plummer. 73’s!

Now that was a meeting. It was a good turnout. The Home brew contest was a lot of fun. Ilike to see what our members come up with.We have a lot of talent in our group of hams.We had Antennas, Helmet Cams on 2 GHz, TubeRegenerative Receiver and even a way to usethat old Phone Patch and a Cordless Phoneinterface with your HF Radio.

Pat WA6MHZ brought in an old Hallicraftermodel number SR 34AC a 2 and 6 meter unit.He said he needs to find a mic for it and give ita try. I hope it works for you Pat.

I wish all the nominees for Ham of the Year thebest of luck. I know that they all have workedhard and done a lot for the Amateur Radiocommunity.

As this year comes to a close, and 5 newsletters later, I am working on some new ideasfor the New Year ahead. I would still like tohave a Tech Talk Corner where members canask questions and get answers. We need toshare and /or pass along the wealth ofinformation that is within our club. I would liketo thank all who have helped for their input, photos, and summation of articles as thosecontributions have enhanced our News Letter.

If you have any reports, listings “for sale andwanted items”, stories or letters to the Editor, please contact me at the address below andput Counterpoise in the subject line.

By: NZ6T(Pat does not wish to be considered for this honor.)

He deserves to be the“Ham of the Year” for2004. David Cyr,KC6QCO, is the rightperson for any job. When our WAMO netneeded a new friendlyvoice, Dave was there. He also was there forthe field day chairman, membership chairman, and Christmas partysales person. These

are hard jobs and he gets the them done withenthusiasm of a teenager. The El Cajon AmateurRadio Club would not be the great club that it iswithout Dave.By: N6IEF

Bill Callier, KD6QB,came into theAmateur RadioClub in 1974. He hasdone so much for theclub throughout theyears, like making allthe badges, officialtags for the namebadges, and Award

Plaques just to name a few, all at no costto the club! Now that’s giving of yourself tothe community. Along the same lines, Billalso cooks at most of the Amateur RadioClub of El Cajon events. I'll tell you hecooks the best hamburgers I have tasted ina long time. Bill has a big heart and is anall around nice guy. He is always ready tohelp out at the drop of a hat. Thanks Bill.He deserves to be the “Ham of the Year”for 2004.

He put the San Diego County amateur radiohobby on the map and showed the type of publicservice that amateur operators provide in thetime of crisis. He has pledged to use his talentson behalf of the 2006 convention as media sub-committee chairman.

Paul took over the Counterpoise last year. Hechanged the format of the newsletter. Theresult produced was simply outstanding. Theuse of “a reporter” for The Spotlight Series wasa stroke of genius. The inclusion of puzzles, jokes and cartoons enhanced the appearanceand readability of the Counterpoise. He deserves to be the “Ham of the Year” for2004.

“ QRZ? de Belize” Well it was settled,we were headed to Belize,a smalland beautiful country located along the Mosquito(read bugs) Coast near the Yucatan peninsula inMexico. I thought I’d like to bring a rig along and Idecided on my Wilderness Radio 40A which puts out awhopping 3 watts on 40 meter CW. I also brought mybattery pack which utilizes 10 AA cells good for manyhours of operation due to the low receive draw. Theantenna was a monoband half wave dipole feed withRG-174 and plastic bottle caps for end insulators. Thefirst night we arrived at our hotel (hut) in the centralarea near the capital city. I was amazed to see howlush and green the countryside was, there was jungleeverywhere. I had already received my reciprocalcallsign and I now became V31KM. Later in the day Ithrew some string over one of the abundant trees inthe area and pulled it as high as I could. The signalscame in loud and clear towards the evening. It wasthe “Jamboree on the Air” weekend (a time when BoyScouts try to contact each-other with the help ofradio amateurs). I was able to work a couple ofstations in the states although my location in a deepvalley didn’t help things (maybe 100 watts wouldhave!). The third day we relocated to a beach frontarea in southern Belize. Once we got settled in Ilocated a bamboo grove and cut a 25' piece for anantenna support. Sticking a piece of PVC down thecenter gave me a final height of 30'. The new locationright on the beach helped those three watts and Iwas able to make contacts to NC,FL,MO and NM. Therig has a good receiver and the internal keyer helpedout on the transmitting chores. We packed up a fewdays later, stowing the rig for the next journey whichnever seems to come soon enough. If you ever get achance to visit Belize you will find beautiful beachesand lovely people waiting for you there.73 for now from V31KM AKA K6KG
