PATTIE MANSUR, KC SCHOOL BOARD VICE-CHAIRMAN

Pattie Mansur is beginning her third year on the Kansas City School Board and now serves as Board Vice-Chairman. Pattie and her husband moved to Kansas City in 1987 and have three children — all of whom graduated from Kansas City public schools. A product of public schools herself, Pattie made a commitment early on to be an active volunteer in the KC public schools. She served as School Advisory Committee Chair and PTA President at three KC public schools and became an enthusiastic and determined champion for the public school system in a city she quickly grew to love. Pattie is also communications and health policy director at the REACH Healthcare Foundation, a health philanthropy that funds health programs and services that serve uninsured and medically-underserved Kansas City metro area residents. Her background is in communications, public relations and policy. Come meet Ms. Mansur at 3:00 on Tuesday, February 21, in the Westport Room.

We are fortunate that Dr. Sean Kim has rescheduled his lecture from December! His lectures are very informative and educational as he brings so much to life in his skillful presentations. Dr. Kim has a flair for blending historical fact with storytelling in a way that engages his audience and pulls them into that moment in time. With this new series, he will spotlight the monarchies of the Iberian Peninsula.

Please join us for this next installment of the Royal Families of Europe series at 1:30 on Friday, February 24, in the Westport Room.

Tim Whitmer performs regularly at top jazz venues in Kansas City. He also hosts a monthly concert series, Spirituality and All That Jazz, at Unity Temple on the Plaza, showcasing the incredible wealth of local Kansas City jazz talent. But we get the pleasure of welcoming him back to BSP at 3:00 on Friday, February 17, in the Madison Living Room. We always enjoy Tim Whitmer, the prodigal son of Kansas City jazz, so mark this date on your calendar!

IT’S TIM WHITMER TIME!

SHAWNEE INDIAN MISSION OUTING

BSP resident Don Carlton has volunteered at the Shawnee Indian Mission for more than five years and he is graciously taking us on a trip to this historical site in nearby Fairway, KS, this month. The site today consists of three large brick buildings from around 1840. These are remnants of a larger site that held a number of barns, sheds, stores and other structures associated with a very active farm and facility for the education of children of the Shawnee and related Indian nations that had been “removed” from their original lands of the Ohio River Valley.

Mr. Carlton possesses vast knowledge about the Shawnee Indian Mission and will share some colorful history about the county’s namesake, Reverend Thomas Johnson, and the original site, the current site, Indian Removal Act and more. Please make sure you sign up with the concierge as the BSP bus will depart at 10:00 on Thursday, February 23.

THE GREAT COURSES: MUSEUM MASTERPIECES

No other museum covers the history of humanity and its achievements quite as thoroughly as The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Professor Richard Brettell believes that The Met is not just the greatest art museum in America, but that it is also the most complete encyclopedic art museum in the world, rivaled only by the Louvre in Paris and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. In these visually-rich lectures, Professor Brettell takes you through The Met from front to back, from bottom to top, introducing practically every department in the museum. His is a personal tour, driven by his enthusiasm and a ceaseless curiosity to speak about The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lectures 1 (The Making of a Museum) and 2 (The Art of Ancient Greece & Rome) will be held at 3:00 on Wednesday, February 22, in the Westport

Room. This is sure to be a compelling 12-week series.

MOVIE CLASSIC WITH CRITIC ROBERT BUTLER

Witness for the Prosecution is a 1957 American courtroom drama film with elements of film noir set in the Old Bailey criminal court in London. The film, based on the play of the same name by Agatha Christie, deals with the trial of a man accused of murder. The first film adaptation of this story, it stars Tyrone Power (in his final screen role), Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton, and features Elsa Lanchester. See this movie classic directed by Billy Wilder at 2:00 on Friday, February 3, in the Westport Room.

During February we celebrate all presidential birthdays on Presidents’ Day, Feb. 20th. On Feb. 28

th,

we celebrate Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, when folks originally consumed all fat products in the larder in anticipation of the Lenten fast that would begin on Ash Wednesday. And then there’s Hoodie-Hoo Day, also celebrated on Feb. 20

th, a time of year when everyone in the northern hemisphere needs something

to chase away the winter blahs. So on Hoodie-Hoo Day folks go out at noon, wave their hands over their heads and chant "Hoodie-Hoo." OK, I’ve never heard of it either, but I found it on the Internet so it must be true, right? If you want to get out of your winter rut, and don’t feel like observing Hoodie-Hoo Day, you might consider participating in a new Bible study. We’ll be using The Path: a Journey Through the Bible as our text, and will work our way through the entire Bible – eventually! If you are interested, please attend an organizational meeting in the Chapel at 3:00 on Feb. 7

th. Afterwards, we can all go outside and chant

Hoodie-Hoo. Or not. — Chaplain Kathy Hall

Roman Catholic Mass: Father Bob Hagan will be here to celebrate Mass on Wednesday, February 1, at 9:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Epiphany. Bible Study: Organizational meeting on Tuesday, February 7, at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Epiphany. Good Books: We will meet on the fourth Monday of the month, February 27, at 3:00 in the Chapel of the Epiphany to finish up our discussion of A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward an Undivided Life, by Parker Palmer. Please join us!

Lunch will be provided (for ten points), so please sign up with the concierge no later than Saturday, February 11, to reserve a delicious lunch by PB&J Restaurants.

DOCUMENTARY: “JFK: THE PRIVATE PRESIDENT”

www.BishopSpencerPlace.org 9

SPEAKER SERIES: RICH BAKER, CEO OF STARLIGHT THEATRE

VALENTINE MELODIES

Valentine’s Day originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world. It’s our red-letter day, and the talented Isabella and Tom Roberts will be here to perform for our Valentine’s Day concert at 2:30 on Tuesday, February 14, in the Madison Living Room. Tom has entertained us many times as our cocktail hour pianist, but this time he is sharing the stage with his wife, Isabella!

DOUG TALLEY QUARTET

Rich Baker, formerly president of Fox Theatre in St. Louis, took the helm as president and chief executive officer of Starlight Theatre Association in March of 2014. Baker oversees all of Starlight’s operations and programming including the not-for-profit’s Broadway and concert series, extensive education programs and all development activities for the 64-year-old performing arts organization. A leader in the musical-theatre industry, Baker currently serves as vice president of the Independent Presenters Network and is a member of the board of governors of the Broadway League, the national trade organization for the Broadway industry. Baker also serves on the League’s road labor, inter-industry and governance committees and is a voter for the American Theatre Wing’s annual Tony Awards®, celebrating excellence on Broadway. He is also a member of the International Association of Venue Managers. We are honored to have Rich along with his energy and enthusiasm for Starlight at 3:00 on Thursday, February 9, in the Westport Room.

Formed in 1995, the Doug Talley Quartet has performed at numerous festivals, concerts, clubs and schools throughout the Midwest. All four members of the quartet — Wayne Hawkins (piano), Tim Brewer (bass), Doug Talley (saxophone) and Keith Kavanaugh (drums/cymbals) — compose and arrange music, as well as contribute to the group's repertoire for recordings and live appearances.

This terrific group will entertain us at 3:00 on Sunday, February 12, in the Madison Living Room.

In honor of Presidents’ Day, we will take a look at the private side of President John F. Kennedy through a documentary by Kathrin Seelmann-Eggebert. In January 1961, as John F. Kennedy moved into the White House, suddenly politics were youthful and dynamic. During the brief period in which he was in office, the first pop star of politics accompanied America through the darkest days of the Cold War. At the same time, his signal to embark in new directions was eagerly welcomed by younger generations all around the world. Later on, Jackie Kennedy would compare her husband’s presidency with Camelot — the legendary court of King Arthur. And of course, there were also dark sides to this popular president's life. The documentary features reminiscences by Robert Kennedy, Jr., and Matthew Maxwell Kennedy, the sons of Robert Kennedy; and by JFK's friend, Harry Belafonte; his closest adviser, Ted Sorensen; and Sergei Nikitich Khrushchev, the son of the former Russian leader. Rare footage from the private archives of the Kennedys provide an intimate view of the life of the legendary First Family. You can enjoy this entertaining documentary at 3:00 on Monday, February 20, in the Westport Room.

This month we celebrate Fat Tuesday and we can party to Dixieland Jazz thanks to the talented duo of Greg Briggs and Craig Smith. You may remember Greg as a woodwind talent, arranger, composer and teacher, while Craig Smith is a keyboard specialist and freelance musician who also works for Rodgers Instruments. The Mardi Gras music will highlight Mr. Briggs on clarinet and Mr. Smith on piano, so plan to come dance at 3:00 on Tuesday, February 28, in the Madison Living Room.

To quote the Wall Street Journal: “They do not sell their hamburgers by the billion. You cannot “supersize” your meal. They are a household world in Kansas City. But Calvin Trillin was right: Winstead’s has the world’s best hamburgers.” (But we already knew that, right?) So get on the bus, Gus, when our BSP ride leaves at 11:15 on Thursday, February 9. Remember to sign up with a Jefferson or Madison concierge! C’mon, there’s milkshake in your future!

Come hear Kurt and his band at 3:00 on Friday, February 10, in the Madison Living Room!

GARDEN TIME

Oh, The Holly and the Ivy — well, we have them, too. And in several varieties. Besides the familiar spiky-leafed trees and shrubs, there are other shrub forms, whose leaves won’t hurt you. Near the stone steps in the Bishop’s Garden, there are three large bushes of winterberry, whose familiar red berries hang on until spring. Inkberries — smaller leaves, smaller plants — are planted around two of the benches; their berries are small, almost black in color. All of the hollies bloom in the spring, with tiny white flowers. Hollies are among the plants that have male and female blossoms on different plants; only the females bear berries. — Article written by Barbara Lee
