Yorktown Battle Strategy
Three groups would meet at Yorktown:
1. Wayne’s western troops
2. Washington’s and Rochambeau’s main American-French army
3. Admiral de Grasse’s French fleet
Victory at Yorktown• Americans and French attack
• Cornwallis surrenders
• Substitutes surrender
• French band played “Yankee Doodle Dandy”
• British band played “The World Turned Upside Down”
• YORKTOWN ended the war

• Group evaluation: Worth 25 individual points which evaluated by your peers.

agree on American independence; Ben Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay

nation; Britain withdrew troops• New nation – from the east coast to the
Mississippi River; from Canada to Spanish Florida
• Americans will pay debts to British merchants
• Property taken from Loyalists “SHOULD” be returned

• With the war truly over, Washington formally resigned
• A sad occasion

Why Did America Win?• British could hold the cities, but
they could not control the countryside
• British citizens and merchants started demanding peace
