Minor escalating causes (Colonists) Sons of Liberty Boston Massacre Committees of Correspondence Boston Tea Party Arms build up
War Begins After some small but no less important fights with the British the
(Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill) the Colonists split into two factions. (loyalists and Patriots)
Loyalists created the Olive Branch Petition Patriots created Common Sense and the Declaration of
Independence
British Strategies Isolate Boston (New England) Plan 1 and
2 FAILED This plan included the battles from Lexington and Concord (1775) to
Battle of Saratoga (1777) British planned to contain the seeds of rebellion first to Boston and
later to New England. British had a hard time engaging the American forces and eventually
failed in their strategy when the British were defeated at Saratoga. Sweep from south up and North Down
FAILED This plan began shortly after the battle of Saratoga. General Clinton (British) ordered General Cornwallis (British) to move
South and sweep North and meet up with Clinton in Virginia This strategy failed when Washington and the French surrounded the
British at Yorktown Virginia
