FACULTY OF MEDICINE ANDALAS UNIVERSITY BY MS. RIRI

    NIRMALA SARI,

    AND

SPECTROFOTOMETRY BY MS. WILLY DELVIANA FROM THE

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACY, UNIVERSITY OF NORTH SUMATRA

The word Abstract is very familiar to the author. In every scientific

literature we often see the word abstract in the first pages in writing or at the

beginning of the scientific writting. Abstract in literature means a brief summary

of a literature or writing. In another sense the abstract is a brief presentation which

contains a summary of a scientific paper or essay that requires no criticism or

suggestions from readers. Also according to the general definition, it is a form of

concise abstract of the contents of a document which consist of significant parts of

a paper, and describe the content and scope of the paper. The purpose of Abstract

is, to briefly explain to the reader about what is contained in a writing.

In writing abstracts in English, in scientific English papers written by

authors who are not from the field of English language course, there are slight

differences in wording or phrase, equality between the contents of paragraphs,

alignment and integration of meaning in every form paragraphs, and also

differences in terms of their choice of words. Therefore, in the discussion of this

paper, the author tries to analyze two abstracts who wrote by two writers from

different majors in terms of of translation, grammar, the choice of words,

cohesion, and coherence. The authors are; the first Ms. Riri Nirmala Sari from the

Department of Psychology, University of Andalas Padang with the title of her

thesis is The Influence of Social Support to Stress of College Students Who Are

Completing Thesis on Psychology Faculty of Medicine Andalas University, and

the second is Ms. Willy Delviana from the Department of Pharmacy, University

of North Sumatra in the tittle of her thesisi is Determine Content of Potassium

and Sodium in Bananas (Musa paradisiaca, L) By Atomic Absorption

    Spectrofotometry.

For the first writer, she is Riri Nirmala Sari. She is from Andalas

University Academic Year 2009/2010 majoring Psychology. In her thesis entittled

The Influence of Social Support to Stress of College Students Who Are

Completing Thesis on Psychology Faculty of Medicine Andalas University, she

wrote the abstract in two languages; English and also Indonesian. She did that

because she is not from the English field. After the writer analyze her abstract,

there are several things that will be disscussed here. The problem that faced by her

in written was the technique in translate the sentence from Indonesian to English.

The writer saw that overall she use manual technique in the translation, for

example in the tittle, she translated Fakultas Kedokteran into Faculty of

Medicine the word Kedokteran if we translated into English will be

Medical. So, it became Medical Faculty.

As the theory of translation, translation in general means an

interpretation from a language or situation to another. Actually, someone who

does the translation have to know what are the criteria of the translation itself. A

good translation is easily to understood, so to make it easy in uderstanding, the

translator have to master in choosing the words that will be used in the translation.

Then, a good translation are fluent and smooth, idiomatic, distinguishes between

the metaporical and the literal, and a good translation reconstructs the

    cultural/historical context of the original.

In the first paragraph, Ms Riri have a problem in using grammar when

she wrote the sentence. Also she didnt notice when she should use present tense,

past tense or even the passive. For example here in the second sentenc, she wrote

As the first generation, students of psychology in 2009 facing various constraints

such as facilities, information, and experiences that make student experience the

tension that leads to stress conditions., if we see the word facing in the sentence

above, it was not correct, Ms Riri should use past tense in writing abstract. And

also still in the same sentence, the words facilities, information, and

experiences are noun, so that if one word is plural, so that all the words in that

range should be plural. It can be like: ...facilities, informations, and experiences..

. In the second paragraph, she used the passive voice, but she didnt notice the

how to use grammar correctly. For example in the first sentence in the second

paragraph This study included in the the quantitative research. The word

included there is incorrect because to use the passive voice there is a tobe was

    before the verb.

For the second writer, Ms. Willy Delviana from the Department of

Pharmacy, University of North Sumatra in the tittle of her thesis is Determine

Content of Potassium and Sodium in Bananas (Musa paradisiaca, L) By Atomic

Absorption Spectrofotometry. In the way she translated the abstract into English,

Ms. Willy Delviana have a little bit problem when she translated her abstract into

English. There are a little bit mistaken for all the content of the abstract. Such as

in the first paragraph, Ms. Willy Delviana has dificulties about the grammar. She

wrote Besides its delicious taste, bananas has many advantage, such as treaty

anemia, aid digestion, and reduce blood pressure here the use of word besides

is incorrect because in the begining of paragraph, the word Beside means

Disamping itu is not suitable if adding by s ending. Then, still in this

sentence, the use of grammar is also incorrect, the use has is not suitable there,

it should be have, because the word banana is plural, and also the word

    advantage, it should be advantages.

In the second paragraph of Ms. Willy Delvianas Abstract, the writer

found grammar still in become the problem, the use of passive voice also made

her confuse in doing the translation. In the last paragraph the word Examination

is not appropriate in the sentente Examination of concentration potassium

obtained where LOD 0.1439 ppm and LOQ 0.4797 ppm, Ms. Willy Delviana

translate the word Hasil pengujian became Examination, it was not

appropriate. It should be The result of the concentration testing. Then, in the last

paragraph, She translated Dengan tingginya kadar kalium dibandingkan

natrium...became With the high content of potassium than sodium.... . The

word With in this sentence is also not appropriate, the word dengan can be

translated into English bu sing the word by so the sentence will be By the

highest content of the potassium to sodium... .

Furthermore, after the writer analyzed both of these thesis abstracts,

they made their written cohhesiveness and also in coherent eventhough both of

them still have the problemin the translation and also in grammar.

The last of the analysis, the writer conclude that both of the

translations have the weaknesses in the way of translate from Indonesian language

    into English.
