Los Angeles, April 18, 2016 — The Annenberg Space for Photography’s upcomingexhibition REFUGEE will feature a documentary narrated by UNHCR High ProfileSupporter, Academy Award-winning actor Cate Blanchett. The film is part of theAnnenbergFoundation’s groundbreakingnewexhibitionofphotography illuminating theglobal refugee crisis. The show opens April 23rd. The film trailer can be seen here:www.thephotospace.org/refugeeThe 23-minute film, REFUGEE, follows five internationally-acclaimed photographerscommissioned by the Annenberg Foundation to shoot pictures documenting the lives ofdisplacedpeopleonfivecontinentsexpresslyforthisexhibit.Wesee:
• Pulitzer Prize-winning combat and human rights photographer Lynsey Addariocovering the RohingyaMuslims, a disenfranchisedminority in the predominantlyBuddhistnationofMyanmar
• FashionandfineartphotographerOmarVictorDiopcreatinggorgeousportraitsofrefugeemotherswhohavefledwiththeirbabiesfromtheCentralAfricanRepublictoneighboringCameroon
• Graciela Iturbide—whosephotographyhangs in theMetropolitanMuseum, theMuseum of Modern Art, and the Los Angeles CountyMuseum of Art— shootingdisplacedfamiliesinColombiawhofledtheirhomestoescapeguerillawarfareanddrugcartelviolence
• MartinSchoeller—whosesignaturehigh-intensityclose-upsappeareverywherefrom National Geographic to Time, Vogue, GQ and The New Yorker— creatingportraitsofrefugeesnewlyresettledhereintheU.S.
• Andwe’rewithacclaimedBritishphotojournalistTomStoddartashe followsthepathofrefugeesfleeingtoEurope—arrivingonsmugglers’boatswashingupontheshoresofGreece,gettingstuckintheno-man’s-landbetweenCroatiaandSlovenia,andfinallyreachingBerlin.
Thedocumentarycapturesthedramaticmomentsbehindthestunningimageshangingintheexhibition,aswellasthephotographers’ownreactionstowhatthey’reshooting.The film REFUGEEwas commissioned by the Annenberg Foundation, chaired by WallisAnnenberg.ThefilmwasshotandproducedbyLondon-basedTigerNestFilms.ExecutiveProducer is Cinny Kennard of the Annenberg Foundation.
