The Anniversary XVth InternationalScience and Technology ConferenceELASTOMERS’2013 “Science & Industry”October 23-25, 2013, Warsaw, Poland

The ELASTOMERS conferences have been organized every 2 years for almost 30 years, and they

are very popular among producers, distributors and scientific-research centres of elastomers busi-

ness and areas connected with a domestic and foreign rubber industry.

In the beginning – from 1985 until 2007 the ELASTOMERS conferences were organized by the

“Stomil” Rubber Industry Institute, then and at present – by the Department of Elastomers and

Rubber Technology in Piastów of the Institute for Engineering of Polymer Materials and Dyes, with

a cooperation of the ‘EKOGUMA’ Association of Rubber Industry.

This year’s jubilee 15th Conference traditionally took place in Warsaw – this year with a slogan

‘Science and Industry’ – focusing on significant issues of a transformation of scientific achievements

into industry and on a technology innovation and rubber products.

The Honorary Patronage over theConference was taken by:

Vice President of the Council of Ministers Mr.

Jan Piechociñski – Minister of Economy, who wasrepresented by Ms. Jolanta Osiñska – the Minister’s Ad-visor from the Department of Supervised and InferiorUnits, and Ms. Jolanta Wikaliñska – Specialist from theDepartment of Innovations and Industry of the Ministryof Economy,

and the Minister of Science and Higher Educa-

tion Prof. Barbara Kudrycka – whose representative,unfortunately, could not be present.

The media patronage over the conference was takentraditionally by the Elastomery magazine, this time withportals Plastech & Info Guma. We had the pleasure tohost representatives of the most important scientificmagazines connected with our area – Polymers andChemical Industry.

In the conference 145 people took part, including 25foreigners – from England, Austria, Czech Republic,France, Holland, Luxemburg, Germany, Russia, Slova-kia, Brasil and China, representing colleges, scientific

Inaugural Session

The conference was opened by the Director of the In-stitute for Engineering of Polymer Materials and Dyes,Mr. Józef Richert, ScD, who greeted all participants andwished a fruitful conferene; he also said a few words ofrecognition and gratitude to the conference’s sponsors.On the occasion of the jubilee 15th Conference – ELA-STOMERS’2013 the Director honoured four people whohave rendred great service during the organization of theELASTOMERS conferences and he honoured them witha commemorative statuettes:— Prof. Ludomir ŒLUSARSKI – for a long-term scien-

tific and factual assistance in the organization of allprevious conferences;

— Prof. Zbigniew FLORJAÑCZYK – for a long-termscientific and factual assistance;

— Dr. Eng. Wanda PARASIEWICZ, Deputy Director forScientific and Research Matters in the former Insti-tute of Rubber Processing – for a considerable contri-bution in the organization of previous conferences,

and— Dr. Jacek MAGRYTA, the first Organizer, former Di-

rector of the Institute of Rubber Processing ‘Stomil’ –for a commencement and continuance of the ELAS-TOMERS conferences in previous years.

Then Prof. Ludomir Œlusarski began the Inaugural Ses-sion giving a very interesting inaugural paper titled:

„Technologia gumy w I po³owie XXI wieku” (Rubber

Technology in the first half of the 21st century), where hediscussed quite difficult perspectives of the rubber in-dustry. He also stressed the significance of specialistknowledge and engineering skills to an effective work inthe modern industry and in the future.

Next papers were also very interesting.Dr. Anna Kêpas-Suwara from Tun Abdul Razak Re-

search Centre Bickeudonburg in England presented aplenary paper titled: „Epoxydised natural rubber (ENR)

and its application in tyres” (Epoksydowany kauczuk

naturalny [ENR] i jego zastosowanie w oponach). In thepaper she discussed an application of ENR-25 (naturalrubber, 25% epoxydised) filled with silica in a mixtureintended for tyre treads, what decreases their rolling re-sistance so it causes a smaller fuel consumption, it alsoimproves adhesion to a wet surface.

Prof. W³adys³aw M. Rzymski presented a surveypaper titled: „Kauczuk naturalny – nieco historii,stan obecny i perspektywy” (Natural rubber in the

past, at present and its perspectives), where he pre-sented very extensively and entertainingly the begin-nings, history and application of the oldest rubber of

an undoubted significance and unique properties –natural rubber.

The next two papers in this session concerned prio-rity issues – as per the slogan of this year’s conference –Science and Industry – transfer of scientific achieve-ments to industry and on a technology innovation andrubber products.

Poster Session

The conference was accompanied by a poster sessionwhere participants from Poland and abroad presentedworks of various subject connected with currently car-ried out research works and projects in the area of elas-tomers, their application, modification, curing, acquir-ing specific properties, improving their resistance, etc.Hosts of this session distinguished 3 posters with thehighest scientific and graphical values: „Devulcaniza-tion of ground tire rubber using microwave energy com-bined with ionic liquid effects” by S. Seghar with co-au-thors, „Resistance to fatique of rubber for shock absor-

bers containing sepiolite” by K. Potock and M. Lewan-dowski, and „Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in rub-ber products” by A. Stêpkowska with co-authors. Thedistinguished authors received external hard discs as aprize.

Conference Dinner / Optional Trip

The conference was graced with a ceremonial con-ference dinner organized by WERBA-CHEM GmbH –the General Sponsor – along with business partnersHans W. BARBE Chemische Erzeugnisse GmbH andGRACE GmbH & Co.KG in a restaurant with a unique

atmosphere „KuŸnia Smaków” at Mazowiecka streetnear the place of conference, and with a very interestingoptional trip ‘Following Chopin’ to ¯elazowa Wola whichwas taken by 40 participants, the trip ended with a rideon beautifully lighted Warsaw streets.

Closing of the Conference

At the end, the conference was summed up by Prof.L. Œlusarski. He stressed the appropriateness of theELASTOMERS conferences and important advantagesfor the industry as a result of the integration with scien-ce, and a necessity for a bigger cooperation of scienceand industry. The Professor also thanked the Organizersof the conference. A few good words to the Organizerswere also addressed by Prof. Gennady Zaikov.

Sponsors of the conference received commemorativestatuettes, as a token of gratitude for their valuable helpand brightening up the stay for all participants of theconference.

During the conference 15 papers were given in total,including 4 plenary papers, and 21 announcements, and22 posters were presented. All presentations were si-multaneously interpreted from Polish into English and

Participants of the conference were given files withconference materials which – apart from the program –included a monography with abstracts in Polish andEnglish of all presentations, including posters, titled:ELASTOMERS’2013 – Science and Industry (ISBN978-83-63555-25-2) and gadgets and folders preparedby the Sponsors and Organizers (the monography is stillavailable in the Department of Elastomers and RubberTechnology in Piastów).
