III B.A Sociology students will be assigned a field work on ‘Women
Entrepreneurship and Social Mobility’ in the month of November, 2009.
• State Level Seminar:
A U.G.C Sponsored State Level Seminar will be held for College teachers
and Students in the month of July, 2009.
• Outreach Programme:
An outreach programme is planned at “Spandana” Special School, Nejar.
Another Outreach programme will be conducted in Kallianpur in aid of
Namma bhoomi, NGO, Kundapur.

1. English Department –
The activities of the English Department were formally inaugurated by Mr. Leo Alva,
Educationist and professor at Toronto, Canada. “Literature, he said, ‘is a vital record of
what men have seen in life, what they have experienced of it, what they have thought and
felt”. He motivated the students to develop their competency in the English Language.
The English movies “Pride and Prejudice’ and A passage to India”, were screened
followed by a group discussion. The movies helped the students to understand the novels
especially the social life of England.
Mr. Sudesh Shetty, Alumnus, Project Manager, HCL Bangalore addressed the final year
students on the different career opportunities available for the under-graduates. Miss
Preeta Furtado, Alumna Sales and Marketing Executive, Gulf News, Dubai reiterated the
need to strengthen communicative skills in English, for better job prospectus. She shared
her experiences and hoped the student would accept challenges and strive towards a
better tomorrow.
The department adopts innovative techniques to help its rural students to develop their
competency in English. Students impact basic English skills to the children of the
neighbouring school like St. Joseph’s primary School, Kallianpur. They are encouraged
to prepare lesson plans and teaching materials etc.,
Miss Kshama conducted 30 hour sessions in communicative English and soft skills to the
students. The Department also conducts honours course for the students by helping them
to develop their reading and comprehension skills. Prof. Mary Mammen, Prof. Cyril
Mathias & Mr. Vincent Alva attended the National Seminar on “English Language and
Literature Teaching-New Pedagogical issues” held at Bhuvendra College, Karkala. Mr.
Vincent Alva has registered for his Ph.D.
Mr. Jaikishen Bhat conducted 30 hour sessions in communicative English and prepared
the students to face interviews etc.
Miss Murel of III BBM and Miss Priyanka Furtado II B.Com. bagged the first prize in the
‘spelling competition” held at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. Miss Priyanka Furtado,
II B.Co. and Miss Rebecca I BBM attended the creative writing workshop at Besant
Women’s College, Mangalore, Prof. Sandhya Nambiar, Dept. of English, MGM College,
Udupi delivered a lecture on “Enhancement of communication skills through Reading.
2. Kannada. • We conducted bridge course for the first year degree students in the beginning of
the year.
• Our Department gave remedial Coaching after class hours for slow learners and
also gave encouragement to advanced learners and also gave books from
department Library.
• Department trained Students
for Vachana Kammata Exam.conducted by Basava Kendra Murugha Matta Chitra
durga.
• We gave encouragement to our students to write articles, poems, stories etc., for
the Wall Magazine Jnanasudha. And also conducted story and poem writing
competitions in the College Level to improve their Literary Skills.
• We gave encouragement to our students to participate various Inter Collegiate
Competitions.
• UGC sponsored two days State Level Seminar was held at on September 15 & 16
.
• Two talks were organized by our department, Dr. Gananath Eakkar and
Prof. Bhavani Shankar.
Activities of Hindi Department
• The Department of Hindi Celebrated the “Hindi Day” on 14th September 2009.
Chief Guest of the day was Dr. Nagarathna Rao, Dept,. of Hindi, University
College, Mangalore. Various competitions were conducted tot the students to
mark the Hindi Day. The gathering was entertained by Cultural Programme.
• The Dept. organized a Certificate Course in “Training in Dramatics”. A total
of 21 students attended the training programme. Mr. Vittal Nayak, Department of
was the trainer.
• The Dept. conducted an honours programme in “Developing reading and
writing skills”. 18 students attended the programme.
• Five students appeared for Hindi Visharadha and Praveena examinations
conducted by Dakshina Bharath Hindi Prachar Sabha, Madras.
• Mohammed Farhan of I B.C.A. won the second prize in inter-collegiate debate
competition held at Davala College, Moodbidri

• Dept. of Pol.Science, along with Dept. of Women studies conducted
inaugural function of the activities of Women Studies both theory and
practical (Tailoring, Embroidary, Fashion designing, Food Processing,
Bakary products training, Crafts drawing) on 10-8-2009
• Oraganised a talk on “self employment” by Sri Seetharam Shetty,(Resource
Person) Industrial Distribution Officers, District Industrial Dept, Udupi on
10.8.2009 for B.A. Students.

• Conducted “ARTSHINE” programme on 15th and 16th October 2009 along
with Humanities Association.
• Conducted ½ day work-shop on “Gandhi’s idiology’ for degree students on
2.10.2009, moderated by Dr. Nery Cornelio.
• Dr.Robert Clive, Lecturer, Crossland College has delivered a lecture at the
inauguration of Humanities Association on 28.7.2009.
• Conducted a lecture on “Changing indetities of women” by Prof. Calistius
D’Sa on 22.8.2009.
• Organised a Lecture on “Social work and Social services” by Kum. Shanthi,
M.S.W. Counseller and Lecturer, Bangalore on 10.10.2009.
Activities of History Department
• At the beginning of the academic year bridge course was conducted for I
B.A students.
• Prof. Jayaram Shettigar presented a paper titled “Buddhism in Coastal
Karnataka” in the National Seminar held at M.S.R.S. College, Shirva on 25th
August 2009.
• Mr. Prashantha Shetty, Lecturer in history has also presented a paper titled,
“Hariti: A Case Study ” in the same seminar.
• Ms. Reshma, Lecturer in History along withis Sahaya Mary and Akshatha
students of I B.A participated in the seminar.
• The Department is also a part in the magnificent discovery of one of the
prehistoric engraving site at Buddhanajaddu, which dates back to 15,000
years. The report has been published in the local and national daily’s.
The T.V channels also covered the news.
• Prof. Jayaram Shettigar presented a paper named, “Tulunadu and its
relations with neighbors” at Vishwa Tulu Sammelana 2009.
• The department has given training to the students of III B.A in the
estampaging the inscription on 15-02-2010.
Activities of Department Of Sociology, 2009-2010
The Department of Sociology has conducted following programmes during the current
academic year.
• The students of the Department of Sociology conducted a study on the
‘Television Viewing Habits among the College Students with a Special
Reference to Milagres College, Kallianpur’ and the report was released.
• The Department organized U.G.C sponsored State Level Seminar on ‘Culture
and Identity’ in association with Mangalore Sociology Association,
Mangalore on 23rd and 24th October, 2009 which was inaugurated by Sri
Gopala Shetty, President, Udupi Vicharavadi Vedike, Udupi.
• A guest lecture was held for all the B.A degree Students on the theme
‘Opportunities for B.A students and Social Work as a Profession’ on 19th
September, 2009 by Ms Shanthi, an Alumnus of the College and the
Counselor, Sree Akshayanikethana Trust, Mysore.

B.Sc. and 10 from first B.Sc.
4. Celebration of International Year of Astronomy:
In association with Association of Physics Teachers of Mangalore University
International Year of Astronomy was celebrated on 7-9-09. Students and teachers
from neighbouring high Schools and PU Colleges were invited. Dr S. Chatterji from
Indian Institute of Astro Physics was the resource person.
5. Honors Programme:
Under the guidance of Prof. Archana honors programme in rain water Harvesting is
conducted.

Raghavendra Shetty of final B.Sc. attended 16 days refresher course in experimental
Physics organized by Indian academy of Science and Mangalore University from 1-
6-09 to 16-6-09.
Rolwin and Praveen of Second B Sc took part in Astronomy Quiz organized by AIR
Mangalore and it was broadcast.

Dr. Gerald Pinto
• Attended 16 days refresher course in experimental Physics organized by
Indian Academy of Science and Mangalore University from 1-6-09 to 16-6-09
at Mangalore University.
• Presented a research paper Radio Nuclides in the Soil of Udupi District in
the State level Science Conference held at Mangalore University held during
15-9-09 to 17-9-09.
• Presented a research paper Natural Radio Activity in the Coastal Taluks of
Karkala and Udupi at National Conference on Low Level Radiation
Safety, organized by Inter University Accelerator Centre, New Delhi
during 18 to 20 Nov. 2009, which was inaugurated by Dr A P J Abdul
Kalam former President and presided over by UGC Chairman Prof. S. K.
Thorat and Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman Department of Atomic En ergy
was the chief guest. The paper will be published in the Indian Journal of
applied Physics.
• Participated in the national Seminar on material science organized by MIT,
Manipal during 2nd and 3rd Dec 2009.
• Was invited for the Platinum Jubilee Programme of Indian Academy of
Science, Indian Institute if Science Bangalore and he was one of teachers
selected from All India from 11-11-09 to 14-11-09.
• Served as member of Board of Studies in Physics in Mangalore University as
well as St. Agnes Autonomous College.
Prof. Archana Dabade
• Attended International Seminar on Astro Physics Organised by FMKM
College, Madikeri during 27 to 29 Dec. 2009.
• Attended State Level Seminar organized by Bhandarkars College Coondapur
on Nano Technology.
• Dabade participated in the International Seminar on Astronomy held at
FMKM College, Madikeri during 28th and 29th December.
Minor Research: Dr Gerald Pinto is awarded minor research: Natural Radio
Activity along west coast by U G C.
9. Field Visit : Final B.Sc. students were taken to Department of Nuclear Medicine
Manipal University and Nuclear Physics lab MIT, Manipal on 15-2-10.
Activities of the Department of Chemistry
• Bridge Course: The department has conducted 10 hours of bridge course to I
B.Sc. students. A test was also conducted at the end of the bridge course.
• Seminar: Seminars were conducted by all the B.Sc. students with the aid of
modern innovative technology. Power point presentations were given by the
students. A soft copy of the same has been prepared and kept in the department.
• Inter Collegiate competitions: Inter collegiate competitions in quiz, lecture, and
college model were conducted during the occasion of Sciencio – 09. 10 colleges
affiliated to Mangalore University took part in the same.
• Honours programme: The department conducts an honors’ programme on
vermin culture as an ongoing programme for the past four consecutive years.
• Guest lecture: A guest lecture was held on 24-7-2009 by Dr. Somashekharappa,
Director, Mangalore University, Science Centre. He spoke on “Climatic changes”.
Activities of Mathematics Department
Guest Lecture : On 5.2.2010 Dr. Ramesh, Dept. of Maths, MIT, Manipal gave a lecture
on “Recurrence Relation” to our B.Sc. students. The guest also mentioned importance of
M.Sc. Mathematics to our students and has given advice to join PG course.
Bridge Course :
A students who passes pre-university course and joins B.Sc. Course needs to develop
some mathematical skills and abilities. Among the students admitted to the I B.Sc.
Course is a sincere effort to help both the categories of the students, in view of getting
themselves acquainted with the fundamental concepts necessary to understand the
subject.
Periodic Test :
Conducted monthly test after each unit. Also assignment was given.
Remedial Class :
We conducted remedial classes for slow learners of B.Sc. and B.C.A. students. We listed
their names from each class and took classes for them.
Advance learners
Advance learners were encouraged;
• To take classes to slow learners / junior students
• To make further references in the library / internet
• To write articles on the topics of Mathematics to display on the wall magazine
• To give seminars on the topics of Mathematics using power point.
• To study the contribution of Indian Mathematics.
• Guest Lecture on 5.2.2010 Dr. Ramesh, Dept. of Maths. MIT, Manipal gave a
lecture on “Recurrence Relation” to our B.Sc. students. The guest also
mentioned importance of M.Sc. Mathematics to our students and has given
advice to join PG course.
• Model Test : Model test was conducted for B.Sc. students at the end of
October and at the end of April. It helps and develops their confidence to
write university exam.
Extension Activity : Mrs. Reena Fernandes has taken class for B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc.
students.
Activities of Department of B.C.A.
IT Club Inauguration
• IT club was inaugurated on 23rd September 2009 by the chief guest Mr.
Venkatesh Mithanthaya, Director of MICE, Shirva.
• The chief guest, Mr. Venkatesh Mithanthaya addressed the IT club and spoke on
“What is information technology and also what its effects in today’s world are.”
• The programme was attended by staff of computer science department, the First
Year and Second year Students of BCA.
VISIT TO IT COMPANY
• The students of BCA and few of them from BBM and BSc along with faculty
visited INFOSYS, Mangalore on 24th October 2009.
• The program was conducted my members of the SPARK team. They had
conducted various activities along with talks.Mr Ganapati welcomed the guests
and spoke on “To Dream Big” and make the dream come true. Some of our
students also shared their dreams.
PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT
IT Club conducted the Personality Development programme on 11-10-2009 by
Ajith D’souza , Dean of M.S.W & Renita D’souza . All the students participated
in this programme.
Activities of Commerce Department
• In the month of Sept.09 Mr. Ganesh Hebbar, Director and Mr. Gururaj,
Career Development Officer, TIME Institute Mangalore had taken a session
on career opportunities to Final B.Com students.
• In the month of Sept.09, Bhandarkar’s group had taken a session on career
opportunities to Final Years.
• The commerce and management association of Milagres College, Kallianpur
organized a two day Mangalore University level Inter collegiate commerce
and Management festival ‘MANEFESTO’ -2009 ON 20th and 21st of October
2009 in the college campus. It was a platform for the students to bring out their
talents and face new challenges in the business. There were 8 teams from different
colleges who participated in the fest. ‘MANEFESTO’-2009 saga de fest, was
inaugurated by Mr. H. Vasanth Nayak, Assistant Regional Officer, Syndicate
Bank, Udupi. He spoke on how to face this competitive world and different jobs
and opportunities available in banking sector. The function was presided over by
Prof. Hilda Rodrigues, The vice principle of the college, Prof. Peter D’Souza,
Head of the Department of Commerce, Mrs. Shylet Mathias and Ms. Jennifer
D’Souza the convenors of Commerce and Management Associations and the
student Co-ordinator Mr. Jason Farais and Ms. Vilma Fernandes. The
Valedictory function of MANEFESTO-09 was held in the college campus on 20th
Oct.2009. Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas, Principal of the College, Prof. Peter
D’Souza, H.O.D. of Commerce, Mrs. Shylet Mathias, Commerce Dept., Ms.
Jennifer D’Souza, Dept. of Management- Covenors, Ms. Vilma Fernandes and
Mr. Jason Farais - Student Co-ordinators were also present on the stage.
• In the month of February 2010 Mr. Dinesh Shetty, a trainer in Banking sector
from Mumbai gave a talk on “Job Opportunities in Banking sector in coming
years”.
• Ms. Chethana, gave a talk on Investment in Stock Market to Final B.Com.
students on 22nd February 2010.

Activities of Management Department
Management association of Milagres college has organized several activities which are
useful for the students not only during academic year but also in the future. The activities
help the students to enhance their skills. Skills are essentially those abilities that help to
promote the well-being of young people as they face the reality in life.
During this academic year Management students were also given an opportunity to
participate in corporate training ‘SPARK’ organized by Infosys. Student of first and
second BBM participated in this training.
The following were the activities which were organized by Management
Association.
• In the month of Sept.09 Mr. Ganesh Hebbar, Director and Mr. Gururaj, Career
Development Officer, TIME Institute Mangalore engaged a session on career
opportunities to Final BBM students. In the month of Sept.09, Bhandarkar’s
group had taken a session on career opportunities to Final Years.
• In the month of October 09, a guest lecture was organized for first year students
of BBM on the topic ‘Indifference Curve And Law Of Equimarginal Utility’ by
Prof. Hilda Rodrigues, HOD, Department Of Economics, Milagres College
Kallianpur.
• In the month of February 2010 Mr. Dinesh Shetty, a trainer in Banking sector
from Mumbai gave a talk on “Job Opportunities in Banking sector in coming
years”.
• On 3rd February a Guest Lecture on Opportunities Of Tourism Management In
Coastal Area by Prof. Melwin Rego , HOD, Department of Sociology, Milagres
College Kallianpur.
• On 9th February 2010 Mr., a trainer in Banking sector from Mumbai gave a talk
on “Job Opportunities in Banking sector in coming years”.
• Ms. Chethana, gave a talk on Investment in Stock Market to Final B.Com.
students on 22nd February 2010.
INTER-COLLEGIATE MANAGEMENT FESTIVAL-“MANEFESTO-09”
The Management Association along with Commerce Department of Milagres College,
Kallianpur organized a two day Mangalore University level Inter-collegiate commerce
and Management festival ‘MANEFESTO’ -2009 ON 20th and 21st of October 2009 in the
college campus. It was platform for the students to bring out their talents and face new
challenges in the business. There were 8 teams from different colleges who participated
in the fest.
‘MANEFESTO’-2009 Saga De Fest, was inaugurated by Mr. H.Vasanth Nayak,
Assistant Regional Officer, Syndicate Bank, Udupi. He spoke on how to face this
competitive world and different jobs and opportunities available in banking sector. The
function was presided over by Prof. Hilda Rodrigues.
Activities of DEPARTMENT OF WOMEN STUDIES;
• Rev Fr. Jesudas, Assistant Parish Priest, Milagres College, Kallianpur Inaugurated
the Activities of the Dept. of Women Studies 2009-2010 on 10-8-2009 Asst.

Introduction:
Milagres College, Kallianpur is a rural institution established in the year 1967. Its main
aim is to impart education to the students of economically and socially backward families
laying special emphasis on women students.

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institution:
(i) HONOURS PROGRAMME:
Honours Programme of 15 hours duration is organized by every department of the
college. The objective of the programme is to offer value added courses to the students.
The programme will help the students to enhance the level of knowledge and skills.
Students are required to complete five honours programmes in three years. Following are
the honours programmes conducted during the year.
• Panchayat Raj – Case study
• Basic Accountancy to B.A./B.Sc. classes
• Rain Water Harvesting
• Reading and writing skills, preparation for Vachana Kammata examination.
• Reading and writing skills, preparing for Hindi examinations like Pravesha,
Uttama, Ratna and Visharada
• Training the children of Kannada medium school in Basic English.
• Enhancement of comprehension skills of students.
Prof. Subramanya Joshi is the Convenor of Honours programme.
(ii) CERTIFICATE COURSE:
To supplement the curriculum and to enhance the skills of the students, every year the
college conducts some certificate courses. The following courses were conducted during
the year.
• Training in Cricket by the Physical Education Department.
• Women Empowerment Course by the Department of Women Studies and
Political Science.
• Communicative English course by the Department of English.
• Analytical, linguistic ability enhancement course by the Career Guidance Cell.
• Mass Communication and Journalism.
(iii) VALUE EDUCATION:
To inculcate sound moral values in our students weekly value education classes are
conducted. The academic year 2009-10 began with Holy Mass . Orientation for the
degree and PU students was conducted on the values like hard work, determination in
life, etc.

(iv) STUDENT WELFARE COUNCIL
The Student Welfare Council was formed on 23rd July 2009 by the process of
nomination. The Directors of the students’ Welfare council Prof. Archana K.
Dabade, Prof. Cyril Mathais and Mr. Vittal Nayak carried out the nomination
process. Two representatives from among the meritorious students of every class
were nominated as the class representatives. The office bearers of the Students’
Welfare Council were nominated from the final year degree classes. They are,

Inauguration of the Council:
The Students’ Welfare Council was inaugurated on 30th July 2009 by Prof.
Jayaram Shetty, Associate Professor, K. S. Hegde Institute of Management, Nitte.
On the occasion all the office bearers and class representatives took oath of office.
Drizzles 2009:
Drizzles a variety entertainment programme was held on 7th August 2009 in which
the talents of the students were exhibited. About 200 students from different
classes presented various cultural programme. The programme encouraged by the
staff members and student community was a grand success.
Independence Day:
Independence Day was celebrated on 15th of August. Prof. Sadashiva Alse,
Principal P. U. College and Prof. Hilda Rodrigues, HOD of Economics, delivered
the Independence Day message. The students presented various cultural
programme like patriotic songs, skits and dances.

‘Heart Beats’:
An exciting music programme “Heart Beats” was presented by a popular music
group from Kerala on 20th August 2009 in the college premises. The music
extravaganza was enjoyed by one and all..
Teacher’s Day:
Teachers Day was celebrated on 7th September. All the teaching and non-teaching
staff were felicitated on this occasion. Many funny games were conducted for
teachers and prizes were distributed. Dr. Neri Cornelio addressed the students on
behalf of all the teaching community. Some students expressed their reverence
towards their teachers on behalf of all the student community.

Inter Collegiate Elocution Competition:
Monsignor D. J. D’Souza Memorial Inter Collegiate Elocution Competition was
held on 29th September 2009. The topic for the elocution was “Global recession
and India”. 16 Colleges participated in the competition and the Rolling shield was
bagged by St. Mary’s College, Shirva.
Medical Aid to Master Swapnil (Sanjay):
The students of our college generously contributed to provide medical aid to
Master Swapnil (Sanjay) Poojary, 12 years, studying in St. Joseph’s Higher
Primary School, Kallianpur, to meet the expenses incurred towards his open heart
surgery. A total sum of Rs.21,280/- was handed over to his parents on 10th October
2009.
Flood Relief Fund:
The students of our college generously contributed a sum of Rs.9,290/- towards
the Flood relief fund as per the instruction by the Government of Karnataka.
In the days to come the Students’ Welfare Council intends to conduct Talents day
and Value Education workshop for students.
New Building Inauguration:
New building of the college was inaugurated on 11th January 2010. The President
of the Students’ Welfare Council Ms. Seema Shetty and other office bearers
joined hands with chief inaugurator in lighting the lamp. The class representatives
of various classes were assigned duties at the counters during lunch.

College Day Celebration:
The President of Student Welfare Council Ms. Seema Shetty, Vice President Ms.
Priya Prabhu, Secretary Ms. Sonia Furtado, Joint Secretary Mr. Vikas were
present on the stage during main programme of the College Day celebration.
Secretary Ms. Sonia Furtado presented the Student Welfare Council report for the
Academic year 2009-10. Student Welfare Council organized cultural programme
during the celebration. Sachin of III B.B.M, Naina Amin of III B.Com., Anil of II
PU Com. And Ashwini of I PU Sci. compeered the programme.
Martyr’s Day:
Martyr’s day was celebrated in a befitting manner on 30-1-2010 at 9.15 AM.
Akshatha Shetty of I B.Sc. gave a meaningful message and Principal Rev. Fr. Fred
Mascarenhas spoke on the occasion. 2 minute silence was observed.

Value Education Workshop:
Value Education workshop was held for non-catholic students on 6th February
2010 in the Tri-Centenary hallo. The resource persons were Dr. Y. Ravindranath
Rao, HOD of Sociology, S.M.S. College, Brahmavar and Dr. Niketana, HOD of
Kannada, Govt. First Grade College, Tenkanidiyoor. They respectively spoke on
the topics “Values and skills in student life”, “Values in personality development”.
Nafhin Banu, II B.A. and Chaya, III B.Sc. compeered the programme. Akshatha
Shetty and Rajesh Shettigar of I B.Sc. welcomed the gathering. The workshop was
inaugurated by lighting the lamp by the President Rev. Fr. Fred Mascarenhas,
Principal of the college.

Two Days Retreat:
The retreat was held for catholic students on 6th and 7th February 2010 in the Silver
Jubilee Hall. .
Felicitation to Anil, III B.B.M.:
Anil of Final year B.B.M. was felicitated at Santhekatte, Kallianpur in a public
function by the College Students’ Council, Staff Council, Management, local
Rotary and Lions Club, State and District Body Building Associations and various
public organizations for winning the Title “Mr. Inter University 2009-10” in the
All India Inter University Best Physique Competition held at G.N.D.U., Amritsar.
Besides conducting the above mentioned activities the council encourages and
guides the students to participate in various inter-collegiate competitions. Sachin
of I B.Com., Krishnaraj Acharya of I B.Sc. have one the 1st place in Clay
Modeling and Spot painting competitions respectively, in the Inter Collegiate Fine
Arts competition Lalitha Kala Vaibhava – 2009 conducted as a part of the Youth
Festival organized by Directorate of Students’ Welfare Mangalore University.
Mohammad Farhan has secured 2nd place in Debate competition in the same. All
these students are selected to represent Mangalore University in the south Zone
Inter University Youth Festival.
Before I conclude I take this opportunity to thank our beloved Principal’s Rev. Fr.
Fred Mascarenhas and Prof. Sadashiva Alse for their whole hearted support in
carrying out these activities. I also thank the Directors’ Prof. Archana K. Dabade,

(V) INDIAN YOUTH RED CROSS :
Indian Youth Red Cross is an active organization of our college and is conducting various
activities under the enthusiastic leadership of Mr. Vittal Nayak, Dept. of Hindi as its
Convenor. Following are the activities conducted by the organization during the
academic year .
Blood Donation is a regular feature of our college every year. Through Blood Donation
we try to educate our students about the importance of life.

1. Departmental Visit: A committee set up by IQAC visited all departments and
associations on 6th and 7th October and 25th and 26th February checked whether the
action plan of 2009-10 is properly implemented and records are properly maintained
guidance is given.
2. Student Quality Circle
Under the guidance of IQAC student quality is working to enhance quality of
education by involving student body. This consists of representatives from student
council and all cells and associations. Rashimi Nayak of final B.Sc. is the president
and Shawn Andrade of final BBM is the secretary.
SQC was briefed about the NAAC report by NAAC co coordinator. SQC brings the
grievances of students to grievance redressed cell and gives the feedback on various
activities and tries to maintain cleanliness and discipline in the campus.
Activities of Career Guidance and Placement Cell
• Certificate course in analytical and soft skills of 50 hours is arranged. About 40
final year students are trained.
• Coaching for B Ed entrance exam:
o Free training is provided to the B.Ed. entrance exam from 3-8-09 to 15-8-
09. 15 students attended the training.
• Coaching for banking exam:
• Coaching for banking and other exams was arranged from 2-10-09 to 4-10-09.
About 25 students attended the training.
• UGC sponsored civil service coaching:
o On 13-8-09 an orientation programme on civil service was held. Regular
training is given on the preliminary exam of civil services to the students.
About 100 students are taking part in training.
• Career Guidance to PUC Students:
• Career Guidance to PUC students was held on 27-6-09 in the silver jubilee Hall.
• Arrangement for campus selection at Alva’s on 26-2-07 and at Mangalore in
April is made.
Activities of Research Committee
1. The following Minor research projects are awarded by UGC during the
current year.
(i) Radiation Dosage due to terrestrial gamma radio nuclides along the west coast by

(ii) Media projection of Women in India by Prof. Melwin Rego.
2. Research Paper presentation:
• Dr Gerald Pinto presented a research paper Radio Active Isotopes in the Soil
of Udupi District in the State Level Kannada Vijnanan Sammelana held in
Mangalore University from 15-9-09 to 17-9-09.
• Dr Gerald Pinto presented a research paper Natural Radio Activity in the
Coastal Taluks of Karkala and Udupi at National Conference on Low
Level Radiation Safety, organized by Inter University Accelarator Centre,
New Delhi from 18th to 20th Nov. 2009.
Activities of N.S.S.
There are TWO units with 203 students (63 boys and 140 girls). Dr Gerald Pinto
and Mrs. Rajeshwari are two trained trained programme officers
1. Inauguration and orientation:
Inauguration and orientation was held on 17-7-09 and Prof. G. M. Thomas of St.
Mary’s College was the guest. On this day Prof. Jayaram Shettigar, former programme
officer was has won state award as Best Programme Officer was felicitated.
2. Dengue and H1N1 awareness programme:
Dengue and H1N1 awareness programme was held on 23-7-09. Dr Ashok, the
medical officer Udupi district was the resource Person.
3. Weekend programmes:
The following weekend programmes were held:
• 09-8-09 - Kallianpur surrounding was cleaned.
• 16-8-09 - Manasa Pamboor - Rainwater harvesting.
• 06-9-09 - Surroundings and ground of Hindu Pry. School cleaned.
• 10-10-09 - Surrounding of the college was cleaned.
4. Vanamahotsava: On 09-08-09, 250 Plants were distributed to the public and
students and some were planted around College.
5. Independence Day celebration:
N.S.S. volunteers were present for flag hoisting. A patriotic cultural programme was
arranged after the flag hoisting.
6. N.S.S. day and competitions:
N.S.S. day was celebrated on 24-9-09 and Dr. Nikethan was the guest of honour. On
this day folk dance Veera Gase was presented by volunteers.
Competitions in slogan writings, essay writing, poster writing, elocution and singing
were held on 17-9-09. More than 150 volunteers participated in the competitions.
7. Blood Donation:
Blood donation camp was held on 1-10-09 with the help of blood Bank KMC,
Manipal. 146 students and staff donated the blood out of which 88 were N.S.S.
volunteers. 250 students identified their blood group.
8. Gandhi Jayanthi and anti non- violence day:
Gandhi Jayanthi and anti non- violence day was celebrated on 2-10-09. Mr. Vijaya
Mayadi and Dr. Neri Cornelio were the guests. Anu, I B.Sc., Vasudha, I B.Sc.,
Keerthi, II B.Sc. and Shubhas, II B.B.M. presented papers on the life and teaching of
Mahatma Gandhi.
9. Programme on Women welfare:
Programme on Women welfare was held on 7-10-09 in association with Women cell.
Mrs Mariola Almeida HM of SMS School was the chief guest.
10. Programme on Govt Facilities:
Mr. Mohammed Akbar, the programme officer of Udupi Zilla Panchayat gave the
information on NREGCS and other facilities.
11. Visit to Old age Homes and Cancer Hospital:
N.S.S. volunteers visited Ozanam Old age home, Goretti Cancer Hospital section and
Spandana on 30-10-09 and prepared a project on their experience.
12. Help to the flood victims:
N.S.S. volunteers contributed soaps, tooth paste and other goods of worth Rs.1000 to
flood victims of North Karnataka through MSW students of our College.
13. Red Ribbon Club: RRC was inaugurated on 26-1-10 by Dr Ashok District AIDS
prevention Authority.
14. Medicinal Plant garden:
N.S.S. unit is maintaining medicinal plant garden behind the library and behind the
main building of the college.
15. Annual Special Camp:
Annual special camp was held at Govt. First Grade College, Tenkanidiur. 84 students
took part in the camp , from 27-12-09 to 2-1-10. It was inaugurated by Mr. Dayanad
Shetty, local community leader and social worker. Principal of the college Rev. Fr.
Fred Mascarenhas presided. Mr. G. Yoganada, principal of Tenkanidiur College
inaugurated shramadana. Dr Gananath Ekkar, the co-ordinator of Mangalore
University N. S.S. was present as guest.
Valedictory was held on 2-1-07 and it was presided by Mr. Pramod Madhwaraj, an
ndustrialist and social worker. He told the NSS volunteers that we receive if we give.
In seven days student leveled the play ground and prepared 200m track, prepared
cycle shed, cleaned surroundings, built a toilet for a poor family and planted
medicinal plants in the college garden. Students also visited 5 cents houses and
experienced their lives. They also identified the persons who are denied various govt.
facilities. They also visited a farm where only organic agriculture is done.
Local MLA Mr. Raghupathi Bhat, Sri. Shirthadi William Pinto, Prof. Cyril Mathias,
Dr. Shridhar Bayary, Dr. Duggappa Kajekar, Dr. Ashok., Prof. B .
Mahalaxmi enlightened the students in social work, personality development, Legal
awareness, National integration, need to protect Konkani and Tulu language and
culture, good food habbits, AIDs awareness and literature etc. Students were taught to
live community life. 84 students took part in this residential camp.
Dr. Gerald Pinto and Smt Rajeshawri were the N.S.S. officers who directed the camp.
16. Training on AIDS awareness:

18. AIDS awareness day: On 5-2-1020 students shared information for 20 classes in the
morning. Jatha was taken to Santhekatte and Nejar and street play was staged at these
places.
19. Red Ribbon Express:
In association with Kallianpur Grama Panchayat and Udupi Zilla Panchayat, the artist
of Red Ribbon express presented programme on AIDS awareness in Silver
Jubilee Hall on 19-2-10. Large number of people and students from local schools
were present.
Dr Gerald Pinto and Smt. Rajeshwari attended the training programme in AIDS
awareness in Red Ribbon Express.
Around 250 students were taken to see AIDS awareness exhibition in the Red Ribbon
Express on 20-2-10.
20. Student Achievement:
Ranjan Nayak of Second BBM represented Karnataka state in the adventure camp
held in Manali, Himachal Pradesh and was awarded distinction certificate.
Vashibhavi represented Mangalore University for R D selection camp at Bangalore.
Activities of N.C.C
Total Cadets in N.C.C this year are 100. Out of them 65 are Sd and 35 are Sw.
The activities conducted during the year are:
• Independence Day parade was held
• On the same day human pyramid was displayed both inside the campus and at
Santhekatte.
• Sgt. Sushmitha attended National Level All India Tal Sena Camp held in New
Delhi in the month of October. She is the first girl from our college to attend such
camp.
• Weapon training and firing training was given to the cadets in the month of
September.
• Republic Day Parade was held and on the same day Section Battle (Mock War)
was conducted.
• This year 25 SD and 19 SW have written ‘B’ Certificate exam and 22 SD and 11
SW have written ‘C’ Certificate exam.
• 58 Cadets participated in the combined annual training camp (CATC)

ACTIVITIES OF SCIENCE ASSOCIATION
Science Association of our College, functions under the able guidance of the convener
Prof. Archana K. Dabade. The office bearers of the association were nominated on 20th
July 2009. Mr. Ashok Shenoy and Ms. Rashmi Nayak were nominated as the President
and secretary of the association respectively.
Inauguration:
The activities of the association were inaugurated on 24th July 2009 by Dr. H. M.
Somashekarappa, Director, Mangalore University Science Centre. He stressed on the
research in basic sciences without which he said technology can never advance. He urged
the students to take up basic research.

International Year of Astronomy:
As a part of the week long programme in colleges of Mangalore University from 9-9-
2009 to 16-9-2009, to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, a guest talk was
organized in our college on the topic “How thick is galaxy” by Dr. S. Chatterji, Indian
Institute of Astro Physics, Bangalore on 10th September 2009. The programme was
sponsored by IIAP, Bangalore and the Association of Physics Teachers of Mangalore
University. Students and staff members from nearby colleges and high schools
participated with enthusiasm.
Science Model Competition:
A Science model competition was organized for PUC and degree students on 25th
september2009. Students presented working and non-working models.
Rain Water Harvesting:
Rain water harvesting is one of the honours programmes conducted under Science
Association. The unit started functioning on 15th July with 29 students from I B.Sc. and II
B.Sc. as members. Akhila, Sujatha, Avin Kumar, Kishore, Sujeya of II B.Sc. gave a
power point presentation on water harvesting methods on 18th September 2009. About
seven sessions were conducted to dig 3 percolation pits and 18 trenches with bunds
behind the new college building to facilitate roof water and rain water harvesting, to
upgrade the water level of existing well. Also a water percolation pit was dug in Rose
Convent premises to facilitate roof water harvesting from the vehicle shed of new
building. Students also submitted the case studies on water harvesting.
Sciencio – 09:
An inter-collegiate Science competition SCIENCIO – 09 was conducted on 16th October
2009. The competition in science model, science seminar presentations, poster
presentation, collage competition, science fiction writing and science quiz were held and
the prizes were distributed.
The inaugural session was presided over by our Principal Fr. Fred Mascarenhas and the
Chief Guest Dr. Santhosh C., Director, Centre for Atmoic and Molecular Physics,
Manipal University delivered the inaugural address with a special mention on the topic
“Photonics”. Ten colleges participated in the competition and overall championship was
bagged by M.G.M. College, Udupi. Thanks to our Alumni for sponsoring the prizes.
Very Rev. Fr. Da’Cruz Memorial Science Seminar Competitions:
Very Rev. Fr. Da’Cruz Memorial Science Competition was conducted as a part of the
Science fest Sciencio 09 on 16th October 2009. About 9 colleges participated in the
competitions in which the Rolling shield was bagged by Vivekananda College, Puttur.
Mr. Venkatachalam of Manipal Science Centre, Mr. Praveen D’Almeida of Aikala P.U.
College and Miss Kavitha of Milagres helped to evaluate the participants.
Guest Lecture in Maths:
On 5-2-2010 Dr. Ramesh, Dept. of Maths, MIT, Manipal gave a lecture on “Recurrence
Relation” to our B.Sc. students. The guest also mentioned importance of M.SC
Mathematics to our students and has given advice to join PG course.
Viewing the longest Solar eclipse:
The longest Solar eclipse of the century was viewed by the staff and students on 15th
January 2010 in the college premises. The image was also projected on the wall inside the
library building.
A PowerPoint presentation on the topic “Superconductivity” was held on 9th October
2009 by the students of Final year B.Sc. and Prof. Archana Dabade.

The sexual harassment prevention cell was inaugurated on 31.07.2009 by Mr. Calistus

35. Activities of the Guidance and Counseling Unit :
Career Guidance Cell under the stewardship of Dr. Gerald Pinto strives to impart
knowledge for the future course of action of our youth. During the year the Cell has
conducted the following courses and activities.
Certificate Course in Enhancement of language and analytical ability - the above
course of 100 hours is organized to help students in campus selection. About 100
students of final year Degree programming are attending this course. A programme
was arranged to enlighten the students of the Degree programme about the
opportunities of employment at the central and state government levels and the
competitive examinations conducted thereby. For PUC students and their parents
informative session on career guidance was held in the month of July. Our students
are also sent for campus selection conducted by WIPRO, Satyam Computers and
TCS.
250 hours civil Service coaching is arranged from the financial support of UGC.
Coaching is arranged for the B Ed entrance exam as a result many students got merit
seats.
Training is arranged for the entrance exam for high school teachers. Many teachers
got selected.
