ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT
2007-08
PART-A
Raja Bahadur Venkata Rama Reddy Women‟s College, Hyderabad, was established in 1954 by
the Hyderabad Mahila Vidya Sangham. The college had the privilege of having great visionaries,
to name a few, Dr. Sarvepalley Radhakrishnan, Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, Smt. Indira Gandhi,
and Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam as dignitaries at different functions organized by the college during
the last half century of its glorious existence.
Vision and Mission:
The vision of the college is to be “a quality educational institution in the region by
enhancing, inspiring and empowering women specially those hailing from rural areas”. In
consonance with this, 60 per cent of the seats at the undergraduate level are reserved for girl
students hailing from rural areas and hostel accommodation also is provided for them in the
campus.
The college is striving hard for its mission to promote knowledge and value- based education
through academic excellence.
Autonomy was conferred on the college in1989. Introduction of several new programmes and
restructuring of existing programmes was done under autonomy.
Reaccreditation by NAAC with Grade „A‟
The college is re-accredited with Grade „A‟ by NAAC in January, 2006.
A brief report of action taken on suggestions given by the members of the IQAC and the QAC
during 2007-08 is submitted herewith
1. Structural modification of time-table to incorporate library hours, project-work,
students‟ seminars, field work and other co-curricular activities was suggested by the
members.
Time-table is prepared and being followed as per this suggestion.
2. Procuring „Bar-Code Scanner‟ for efficient functioning of the library was suggested.
Bar-code scanner is purchased and put to use.
More details regarding the activities undertaken during 2007-08 are illustrated under

1. Curricular Aspects
Curricular design and development
The college offers 34 programmes of which 7 are at Intermediate level, 23 at under graduate
level and 4 at Post Graduate level.
A new combination in B.Sc. with Mathematics, Electronics and Computer Science is introduced
during the academic year 2007-08.
The number of seats in B.Sc. [BCCS] is increased from 15 to 30 and an additional section is
opened in B.Sc. [Biotechnology] from this academic year 2007-08.
Academic flexibility
The college has offered 13 certificate courses during 2007-08 for the benefit of the students.
These courses are aimed to train students in basics in the respective fields of interest. The details
of these courses are given in Table I.

Curriculum update
Boards of Studies meetings are held every year to update the curriculum.
2. Teaching-Learning and Evaluation
Teaching staff has attended a number of Orientation and Refresher Courses to update their
knowledge in their respective subjects. The details in this regard are furnished in Table II.

Evaluation process and Reforms
The system of Internal Assessment, which was introduced during 2005-06, is extended to the
undergraduate final year students this year.
3. Research, Consultancy and Extension 2007-08
Promotion of Research
5 faculty members have availed financial assistance from U.G.C under F.I.P grant for doctoral
research by the U.G.C.-SERO, Hyderabad.
Report of the UGC-Minor Research Project in Sociology entitled “Divorce in India — A Socio-
legal study” is submitted by Dr. M. V. Lakshmi Devi, Reader, Department of Sociology.
Mrs. M. Madhavi, Lecturer, Department of Zoology is having an ongoing UGC-Minor Research
Project entitled “Effect of Carvones on the Growth and Development of Corcyra Cephalonica”
with an outlay of Rs.40,000/-
Besides, many members of the faculty are pursuing pre-doctoral and doctoral research
individually without any financial grants.
Research publication output
The faculty have participated and presented research papers in international, national and state-
level conferences and seminars: The details are furnished below in Table III.

A good number of teachers published research articles in journals, and edited volumes. Research
Papers presented by them in various International and National Seminars are published.
Consultancy
Dr. Ruma R. Rao, Reader, Department of Commerce, has given a series of lectures on retail
marketing at a training session organized or APCO employees. She is also working on a market
survey for developing business and marketing plan for APCO carried out by Management And
Marketing Research Consultancy.
Dr. M. V. Lakshmi Devi, Reader, Department of Sociology is invited as a Guest Speaker for the
Orientation Course on „Ethics and Administration‟ for Grade I Officers of the Government of
Andhra Pradesh, by Marri Chenna Reddy Institute for Human Resource Management,
Government of Andhra Pradesh. She was also a Resource Person [Sociology] for preparation of
Audio Lessons and Multimedia Lessons for EMMRC, Osmania University and AVPRC,
Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad.
Dr. K. Vidyavathy, Reader, Department of Telugu, is recognized as a Research Guide for Ph.D.
[Telugu] by the Osmania Univresity. Presently, six candidates are pursuing Ph.D. under her
guidance.

Mrs. Tanvir Fatima and Mrs. Grace Sudhir, lecturers in the Department of English prepared
course material for undergraduate course in English Literature for Prof. Ram Reddy Center for
Distance Education, Osmania University, Hyderabad.
Mrs. Madhavi, Lecturer, Department of Zoology, prepared multimedia lessons for MANA TV
[Education Channel], Government of Andhra Pradesh.
Many of the faculty members are appointed as Members of the Board of Studies and Examiners
in their respective subjects by other autonomous colleges and also Osmania University.
Extension activities
Staff and students participated in community service activities. These include awareness creation
and community mobilization programmes.
Staff contributed towards medical expenses for surgery of one of the supportive staff‟s son.
Students donated old cloths and voluntarily contributed nearly Rs.5,000/- to Sister Rani of „Care
and Love Welfare Society‟- an NGO.
Best practices in research consultancy & extension
The college Management has sanctioned Rs.5, 000/- per member as seed money to pursue
doctoral research to the departments of Chemistry and Business Administration during 2007-08.
4. Infrastructure and Learning Resources
Physical facilities for learning
Campus of the college is centrally located comprising 3.5 acres land and six buildings. There are
47 class rooms, 29 science laboratories and 13 staff rooms. All classrooms are well-furnished
and have good ventilation. The college has an Audio-Visual Room and a spacious Auditorium.
The college has a Gym and a Health Center.
Unit Cost of Education
Unit cost of education for undergraduate courses is Rs. 9,140/- [Inclusive of salaries and
Rs.816/- [exclusive of salaries]. In case of postgraduate courses, the unit cost of education is
Rs.19, 334/- [inclusive of salaries] and Rs. 9,169/- [exclusive of salaries].
Library as a learning resource
The college library has three wings- namely, intermediate library, degree library and post-
graduation library. The degree and post-graduation libraries are computerized. Stock verification,
issuing of books and other activities are computerized. New software for use of barcode-scanner
is introduced from this year.

The library continues to be connected with Osmania University Library for inter- library
borrowing.
Student-Book ratio for each subject at under-graduate library is 1:24; at M.B.A library this ratio
is 1:5, and for M.Sc. Courses the Student: Book ratio is 1: 3.
Total outlay used for enriching the U.G. library during 2007-08 is Rs. 1, 96,580/-
Library has open access system, which is very useful to the students and staff. It is updated each
year by purchasing new books and subscribing journals and periodicals. The number of volumes
and journals available in the library are furnished below in Table IV.

ICT as learning resources
The central computer facility free of charge with internet facility is being used by staff and
students for preparation of study material, documentation of project- work and research work.
Other facilities
The cooperative store continues to be run by the staff. Note books and record books of all
science subjects with the name of college printed on the cover page are available in the stores
along with other items.
The canteen continues to provide nutritious and tasty eatables at reasonable rates. It is run by an
outside agency.

College has a Gym, which is attached to the newly built games room. Gym is equipped with
treadmills, cycles, AB exercisers, twisters and stoppers. It is widely used by both the students
and staff.
The health centre that is established in the college is highly beneficial to the students, staff and
resident-scholars. The services of the doctor and also the hospital with which the college has an
MOU are utilized extensively by all the needy in the college.
5. Student Support and Progression Student progression
The scholastic achievements of the students are satisfactory during 2007-08. Most of the students
wrote entrance examination to pursue post-graduation. Details of the results of undergraduate
programs are given below.

Many students are selected for jobs at campus placements. During 2007-08, 39 percent of the
students who attended campus placement were selected by companies like WIPRO, Infosys,
Satyam, and Accenture. The total number of students placed is 50.
Student support
Many students, both undergraduate and postgraduate students, received scholarships from the
State Government in the form of B.C., S.C., AND S.T. scholarships. A total of 600 students are
sanctioned B.C. scholarships, 176 S.C. scholarships and 32 S.T. scholarships this year. A
statement of B.C., S.C., and S.T. scholarships and other financial aid and incentives of 2007-08
is given below.

Two students were awarded National Merit Scholarship of the Government of India. Two
students received Pratibha scholarships from the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
Many students received the merit scholarships instituted in the college through donations from
philanthropists.

Student activities
Students participate in academic and cultural activities conducted by the college and outside
organizations. The details of few prizes won are mentioned in table VI. A photo-gallery of
students‟ activities is appended as Appendix I.

Best practices in student support and progression
College has adopted new best practices during this year besides continuing the practices already
in practice. Department of Mathematics introduced project-work for the students in using
„Mathematica‟ software with an aim to promote research culture among them.
Remedial classes are organized for the slow learners. 199 students of Semesters I, III, and V and
246 students of II, IV and VI semesters are benefited out of it during 2007-08.A feedback on
these remedial classes also obtained from the beneficiaries of remedial classes.
Achievers in sports received cash prizes as a token of appreciation.
The Management instituted an incentive by way of reimbursement of tuition fees for toppers in
undergraduate [Arts, Science and Commerce] courses with an aim to appreciate and encourage
academically talented students. 3 students were benefited by this during 2007-08.
The students‟ feedback is obtained this year also. Various issues identified by the students in this
feedback are carefully analyzed and appropriate measures are being taken.
The grievances of the students are also attended through the suggestion boxes kept at various
places in the college. A record of action taken in this regard is maintained as a „grievance
register‟.
The Placement Cell enhanced the activities this year. Several companies interviewed our
students and several of them got placement. During 2007-08, 39 percent of the students who

6. Governance and Leadership
Organizational arrangements
The administration of the college is totally computerized. The admission process, examination
results and issue of certificates are all computerized.
The college has full-fledged and fully computerized Examination Branch.
The college has MOUs with several organizations, which help the students in securing training
for job opportunities.

7. Innovative Practices
Stakeholder relationships
Parent-teacher meets provide a platform for discussing the all round growth of the students. It
provides scope for identifying the areas for improvement of the college through enhanced inter-
personal relationships among staff and students. Parent-teacher Interface is organized this year
also.
The college has established an English Language Lab, Commerce Lab, Mathematics Lab and a
Computer Center. The college is the only under-graduate college to use Mathematica software in
the entire state of Andhra Pradesh.
The alumni association is active.
8. Future Plans
1. To start a few undergraduate and postgraduate courses such as a course in Food Technology,
