Pastor’s Corner It was wonderful to see so many people at our Lenten Mission last week. My hope is that it was fruitful for all who attended, as it certainly was for me. Our Gospel reading today is one of the key passages upon which we focused Tuesday evening. It reveals to us that we are no longer punished for our sins in the sense of the Old Testament covenant of Blessing and Curse (that is, if we are good

we will be blessed in the world in a material sense and if not, then we will be cursed). Rather, suffering becomes a mystery to us, with the understanding after Jesus’ death and resurrection that it has a salvific effect. As we celebrate this 3rd Sunday of Lent, the focus is on our faith and our salvation. This time of Lent is a faith strengthening time for us, a time to see the signs that Jesus gave to us so that we can have a more pure, true and stronger faith—both in the good that we see and the crosses we have to bear. Today’s readings illustrate several atrocities brought upon God’s people. Though they seem to infer themes of judg-ment and God’s wrath, the purpose is not to provoke fear in us, but to provide us with hope and encouragement in our

faith. Jesus’ commands to “repent or we will perish” is not an ultimatum, it’s an invitation to accept God’s mercy and the new life he can breathe into us when we have a pure and clean heart as well as the ability to withstand whatever challenges we face. In the end, Jesus’ mission was to save our souls and the Church He established continues His mission. In the Cath-olic Church, we are given the sacraments to facilitate our salvation, two of which can be practiced regularly. We are invited to wipe our slates clean of sin with true repentance and be filled with the Grace of Amendment in Confes-sion. The Grace of God given to us in the Eucharist strengthens all Graces given to us by God. Today’s Gospel provides us with hope in Christ. We see that growth in our faith is a process that takes time, like a gardener cultivating a fig tree waiting for it to bear fruit. Just as the gardener didn’t immediately throw out the fig tree, neither will Jesus in our process of becoming more like Him. If we put in the time and respond with faith and patience, we too, will bear much fruit. As Scripture teaches us, God’s patience is directed to our Salvation. Let us do our part in having the fortitude to resolutely continue our Lenten Journey in prayer, almsgiving and fasting.
