We may not often think about it, but the
clothes we purchase, how we care for
them, and how long they’re worn have a
profound impact on the planet. Consumers
are purchasing more clothes than ever
before, while the average time worn is
declining significantly.1 Over the next thirty
years, as the middle class grows, demand
for raw materials for apparel is expected to
triple,2 putting extreme pressure on limited
resources like water, energy, and land.
THE APPAREL DILEMMA
The average consumer bought 60%
more clothing in 2014 than 2011, but
kept each garment half as long.
To do what’s right for our planet, for people,
and for the textile and apparel industry, we
need to move to a more circular system,
reducing waste and keeping resources in
use for as long as possible. In 2008, to help
address this challenge, The LYCRA Company
created Planet Agenda, a sustainable
operating framework that touches every
aspect of our business. It‘s based on the
belief that we can contribute to a more
sustainable apparel industry by delivering
insights, technology, processes, and
products that add value while conserving
resources.
MEETING THE CHALLENGE
The LYCRA Company Planet Agenda features three interdependent pillars:
• Corporate Responsibility
• Manufacturing Excellence
• Product Sustainability
Conducting business lawfully and ethically is a key
guiding principle of The LYCRA Company. Our goals
include:
All of The LYCRA Company manufacturing sites look
for ways to reduce our environmental footprint by
conserving resources and eliminating waste. Key focus
areas include:
INSIGHTS TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTS PROCESSES
Energy Savings: Since 2011
our LYCRA® fiber production
sites have implemented
more than 250 energy
reduction programs. As
of 2019, two of our sites
had reduced their energy
intensity by more than 20%,
with more than half of our
sites improving by more
than 10%.
Reducing WasteOur EcoMade family of products spans our LYCRA®, COOLMAX® and THERMOLITE®
brands, responsibly re-using waste to enable a more circular business model. Offerings in
this family include:
COOLMAX® EcoMade and THERMOLITE®
EcoMade fibers are made from 97%recycled PET. These fibers give new life to
plastics while providing cool, dry comfort
and lightweight warmth. THERMOLITE®
T-Down (100% recycled content) and
THERMOLITE® T3 (35% recycled content)
insulations provide lightweight warmth for
outerwear garments.
Strive for consistently high health and safety records at all of our sites, meeting or
exceeding environmental regulations around
the world. For example, in 2018, The LYCRA
Company’s recordable injury rate was 10Xlower than the average for manufacturing
industries.
Be a good corporate citizen by supporting
the communities where we operate,
sponsoring employee volunteer efforts, and
contributing to organizations that advance
sustainable practices in our industry.
Be an employer of choice by ensuring
lawful labor practices are followed and
all employees are treated fairly and with
respect.
Water Savings: Each of our
sites has individual water
reduction goals. At our Tuas
site in Singapore, and our
Monterrey site in Mexico,
we reduced plant operation
water usage by more than
20% since 2013.
Waste Reduction: In 2018
less than 1% of LYCRA® fiber
waste was sent to landfill
with a goal to reduce this
even further going forward.
Our third pillar focuses on developing products that
use fewer resources and improve the environmental
performance of fabrics and garments throughout
their lifecycle. The LYCRA Company has a broad
variety of products designed to address these
needs:
LYCRA® EcoMade fiber contains pre-
consumer waste and is The LYCRA
Company’s first recycled elastane
offering.
LYCRA® T400® EcoMade fiber is
made from 50% recycled PET and
18% plant-based materials, and
provides moderate stretch with
excellent shape retention.

Reducing Waste (continued):In our personal care business, our R&D team is developing LYCRA® fiber offerings with higher retractive force. These options will enable customers to use less fiber, and still achieve similar performance to existing offerings. More efficient consumption also means fewer package changes and lower distribution and warehousing costs.
Screened Products: A number of The LYCRA Company’s
products have been screened by third
parties to ensure transparency of
ingredients, safe use of chemicals, and
a commitment to developing greener
chemistries. A complete, up-to-date list of
certifications can be found on our website: lycra.com/sustainability
Extending Garment Wear Life: Extending garment wear life can significantly reduce the
environmental impact of a garment. According to WRAP (Waste and Resource Action Programme, increasing the active wear life of an item of clothing by just nine months can reduce carbon, waste, and water footprints by 20 to 30 percent each3. The LYCRA Company has a variety of innovations designed to extend garment wear life, including:
LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™ fiber provides long-lasting fit in chlorinated water environments (up to
10 times longer than fabrics made with unprotected elastane.
LYCRA® FUSION™ technology helps make hosiery resistant to ladders (runs which can
improve garment wear life.
LYCRA® dualFX® technology combines two stretch fibers to bring long-lasting stretch and
shape retention to denim and woven fabrics, helping jeans and pants maintain their fit.
LYCRA® TOUGH MAX™ technology provides up to twice the strength of 100% cotton fabrics
at comparable weights for a more durable denim.
LYCRA® BLACK technology is the industry’s first black elastane, and helps clothes maintain
deep, rich tones thanks to spun-in black pigment.

Just a few examples of corporate respnsibility in action: Left • Our Maydown facility in Northern Ireland gifted a building to BEAM, an organization that provides space for entrepreneurs to work for the betterment of the community, and: Right • Employees from our Tuas, Singapore site participating in Kayak and Klean, an initiative to retrieve trash from local waterways.
Enabling Reduced Resource Usage:Several of The LYCRA Company’s
innovations pave the way for our
customers to use fewer resources in their
processing. These include:
LYCRA Hyfit® Type 837 fiberExcellent run performance means less energy
used, fewer breaks and less waste in diaper
production.
Easy Set LYCRA® fiberOffers customers the ability to heat set fabrics at
15-20% lower temperatures than standard elastane,
thus using less energy in processing.
Easy Scour FinishesHelps customers use less water in fabric finishing.
Using Renewable Resources:The LYCRA Company is dedicated to using renewable resources where appropriate. In 2014 the company introduced the world’s first bio-based elastane, with 70%
of the content derived from dextrose originating from industrial corn. While this product is not commercial today, we are able to re-start production if the demand warrants. In addition, LYCRA® T400® fiber is partly made from plant-based material.
The LYCRA Company Planet Agenda represents a commitment to developing products and
technologies that will minimize our environmental footprint, and enhance the performance
of our customers’ offerings, while safeguarding the health and safety of employees and
communities. We execute this commitment by focusing on three interrelated pillars: Corporate Responsibility, Manufacturing Excellence and Product Sustainability. For more
