ABSTRACT Tadao Ando is one of the excellent architects both in
Japan and in the world. One of the reasons which distinguishes his
architectural works from those of others is that Tadao Ando is very
good at utilizing darkened space aesthetics characteristic of
traditional Japanese architecture in creating special indoor
darkened spatial atmosphere. This study proposes to shed light on
the spirit and meanings behind Tadao Ando’s residential design
works from the standpoint of the influence of darkened space
aesthetics upon Tadao Ando’s architectural thought and residential
design works.
