DIAR EARLY CLOSERSSHOW RENEWED VIGORFOR FIXTURE

Entries for the early closing features ofthe Dubai International Arabian Racesflagship day at Newbury on Sunday 26th

July show a renewed vigour for thefixture.

The Dubai International Arabian Racescommittee and the Arabian RacingOrganisation (ARO) have beendelighted by the number of entries. The feature race, the Shadwell DubaiInternational Stakes (Gr.1 PA) and theFillies equivalent, the Dubai Duty FreeHatta International (Gr.1 PA), bothmaintain their strength from previousyears with 21 and 24 entriesrespectively.

Amanda Smith, Racing Manager forARO commented on the increase inentries for the Emirates EquestrianFederation International Stakes (Gr.2PA) and the Emirates NBD InternationalStakes:

“It is very encouraging that the 2 racesthat showcase future talent haveincreased numbers of entries from2014. The Emirates NBD InternationalStakes is a perfect ‘stepping stone’ forhorses that are yet to win a Grouprace, so we hope to see some of thesehorses progress to pattern races infuture years. The Emirates EquestrianFederation International Stakes (Gr.2PA) for 3 year olds is also a key race forjuvenile Arabians which often offersclues for the future. A perfect exampleis the 2015 Kahayla Classic (Gr.1 PA)winner MANARK (owned by the day’spatron His Highness Sheikh Hamdanbin Rashid Al Maktoum) who is aprevious winner of the EmiratesEquestrian Federation race.”

The entries also give an indication ofthe considerable quality of potentialrunners at the UK’s premier Arabianrace day, and enthusiasts and puntersalike will do well to take note of someof the eye-catching entries. Owned bythe Royal Cavalry of Oman, VULCAINDU CLOS has won some valuableconditions races on the continent aswell as being competitive in Groupcompany. Sired by the recentlydeceased Shadwell stallion MONSIEURAL MAURY it would be particularlyfitting if he won the Emirates NBDInternational Stakes on a daypatronised by HH Sheikh Hamdan.

Winner of the valuable Qatar TotalArabian Trophy (Gr.1 PA) inLongchamp last September, LORAA isowned by Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansoorand represents the stable of the lateJean Francois Bernard. She followedup her Longchamp victory with anunlucky second to fellow Dubai DutyFree Hatta International Stakes (Gr.1PA) entrant RAWAH, trained by FrancisGraffard for HH Sheikh Mohammed BinKhalifa Al Thani. If both mares appearin the final declarations, we will have ascintillating re-match to look forwardto.

Another tantalising prospect for theday is the 6 year old mare ALMOUHANNAD, trained by Mr Baillet inFrance, who is bidding to make it a hat-trick of consecutive wins in the Gr.1 PAJebel Ali Racecourse ZaabeelInternational Stakes.

The first Arabian horse in UK trainingfor champion Qatari trainer JassimGhazali, RASI is hoping to prove he canhold his own as a 4 year old againstolder horses if he is declared for theday’s feature race the Shadwell DubaiInternational Stakes (Gr.1 PA). He willhave to take on last year’s ShadwellDubai International winner AL HIBAABamongst others if his trainer chooses torun him. This is not however a 2 horsecontest; competition also comes fromtrainer Julian Smart in the form of ALMAJH'HOOR who finished third inDoha’s feature race of the year TheEmir’s Sword. He is also entered in theJebel Ali Racecourse ZaabeelInternational Stakes (Gr.1 PA) but thatrace would represent a considerabledrop in trip for the Qatari raider.

Richard Lancaster, Shadwell’s StudDirector was delighted with, not onlythe consistent number of entries in thefeature races but the spread ofpotential horses for the DIAR featureday on 26th July:

“The Dubai International Arabian Racesare designed to encourage people to“have a go” at running their horses at ahigher level, introducing new countriesin to the mix of the DIAR experienceand challenging them to travel to theUK to compete on this stage for thesport of Arabian racing. To that end, Iam really pleased to see horses fromthe UK, France, Qatar, TheNetherlands and Belgium all aiming toparticipate in this great spectacle. TheDIAR committee put a great deal ofeffort in to schemes such as the warmup bonus races and in to picking newcountries to introduce in to the DIARfamily and it is very rewarding to seethat it is starting to pay off.

On behalf of the DIAR committee, Iwould like to thank everyone who hassupported us this year by enteringhorses and encourage them to runthem – not only to enhance theenjoyment of enthusiasts and first time

race-goers on the day but to highlightthe sport for the truly great spectacle itis.”

DORMANE - FRANCE LOOSES TOPSIRE

The death of one of France's leadingsires at the age of 31 was announcedlast month.

A product of the famous Haras deMandore, owned and trained by Jean-Marc de Watrigant, Dormane (FR)(Manganate x Mandore) won six of hiseight starts at three and four yearsincluding the Dubai InternationalStakes, then run at Kempton Park.

A great success at stud, he is a sire ofnumerous Group 1 performers, including two Kahayla Classic winnersin Bopp Moon and Kaolino. He willcontinue to shape the course ofArabian racing as a sire of sires,

through his many stallion sonsincluding Dariya, Kaolino, Parador andthe brothers Chndaka and Darike.

He could also get top fillies too, suchas the winner of the UAE Cup/UKArabian Derby, Kiss De Ghazal, and willundoubtedly continue to be influetialas a broodmare sire through the likesof Ziva and many others.

One of his last crops includes Carsa DuGinioux, in training with Damien deWatrigant, and as yet unraced. She is athree year old half sister to current starMister Ginoux. Only time will tell, butshe is certainly bred to keep his namein the spotlight.

The arabian racing world was alsorocked last month following theannouncement of the loss of VéroniqueBriat, Director of the French ArabianRacehorse Association (AFAC) in atragic accident.

Prior to joining AFAC in 2011, she hadworked abroad in the USA and UK,including many years at Shadwell Stud- who responded to the news bynaming the Group 3 PA Priz Razzia inher honour, to be run at La Teste deBuch later this month.

AFAC Chairman Yves Plantin paidtribute on the IFHAR website, "whenour Association was looking for

someone who could become head ofthe Association, her profile seemedobvious. Besides the fact that she hadworked in the States and in Englandfor many years, she had a strongknowledge of horseracing and inparticular, of Arabian horseracing. Sheshowed versatility and stronginvolvement in her job. Her actionhappened to be beneficial for theAssociation and its members. Sherepresented the Association in Franceand abroad. Véronique Briat alsomanged the publications and recentlymoved into the digital age. We are allvery affected by her death."

Please can you tell us about HH SheikhHamdan’s initial involvement with Arabianracing?

It must be over 25 years ago since westarted racing Arabians; Sheikh Hamdanbought four or five English bred Arabiansand it was just at the time when the Frenchwere coming over and winning the DubaiInternational at Kempton and suddenlythe foot was taken off the brake. We werevery lucky as the first horse we bought wasBengali D’Albret and that really set thetone for everything.

In the Gulf at that time, things were juststarting too, there was a lot of interest. Wewon our first Kahayla Classic - though wehaven’t yet managed to breed one; they’ve

all been bought in France [RichardLancaster makes the final recommendation onpurchases for Sheikh Hamdan]where I’mhelped by Gerald Larrieu of ChantillyBloodstock, he comes from the SouthWestof France and he’s close to the form there.

Our first winner in the Kahayla Classic wasNivour De Cardonne, then BoppMoon, both with Keiran McLoughlin; Kaolinofollowed and thenMadjani, three years onthe trot, all trained by Gill Duffield whohas been such an integral part of theoperation both here and in the UAE.There’s been a bit of a gap to Manarkwinning this year; it was the icing on thecake really as it was a very welcomesurprise and brilliantly done by ErwanCharpy and Dane O’Neill.

Sheikh Hamdan has also had some verygood horses which haven’t won theKahayla Classic, such as No Risk Al MauryandMonsieur Al Maury. No Risk was atough horse; his trip was really a milethough he did win the Dubai International- that was sheer class seeing him through. So you can see the passion that SheikhHamdan has had over the years. Withthose horses we’ve tried to locate them inthe right places so that breeders can takeadvantage of them once they are retired tostud.

Do your bloodstock purchases differ after 25years of racing and breeding?

I think there has been a change in the typeof horse Sheikh Hamdan buys; their shapeand some of the bloodlines too. I think theindustry has drawn a line under the initialpedigree issues [WAHO, Amer etc], so aslong as nothing else changes, I think wecan be competitive. We have a lot of goodfamilies on the dam side. In those early

days we were paying quite humble pricesfor these good horses. We’ve had to movewith the flow and pay more and over thelast 3-4 years we have started to rely moreon home-breds of which Al Hibaab is byfar and away the best we’ve producedrecently.

As far as the breeding operation goes, initially, obviously we had to rely on buy-ins but there are signs now that we areprogressing and catching up. When westarted we were also trying to use entirelyour own stallions, but we are now usingMunjiz andMahaab. Salaama [byMahaab] is out of a daughter of Volna whoI bought in Russia, (not Tersk but thatarea); that was quite an expedition! Thebreeding side of things has taken me tosome pretty obscure places; I remembertravelling by mini bus fromWarsaw to thethen Soviet Russian boarder to buybreeding stock and a group of us travelledto Aleppo in Syria on one occasion too - it’scertainly been an adventure!

Your breeding stock rotates between the UKand France...

It’s not ideal, having the stock so far awayfor a portion of the year and it does have itsproblems. In the ideal world the Arabianswould have their own farm but it isdifficult and expensive to set up anoperation specifically for them becausethey have such different needs toThoroughbreds. Most don’t race till theyare 4, so you have a longer period ofnurture; they can’t just be chucked out in afield because they are sharp horses whichneed to be developed and you can’t keepcolts together as they start fighting! Theyare also extremely good doers so you runthe risk of them getting fat if you just leavethem out in the paddocks.

Hopefully with how we have it organisednow between here and France, we can getthe balance right to aid their developmenttowards racing and for breedingafterwards.

Since the loss of Monsieur Al Maury, currently

you stand seven stallions in the UK, Franceand America, that’s quite a ccommittement?

The stallions are an interesting side of thebusiness too; we stand horses in France sothat the French can have access to them, aswe’ve been lucky enough to buy themthere.

Unfortunately Bengali has not bredanything as good as himself and althoughit’s early days for Madjani, he had his firststakes winner at Duindigt recently in aListed race so we are delighted with hisprospects. All the No Risk Al Mauryprogeny look outstanding and the breedersseem happy with them, although theyprobably wouldn’t be early types, he took abit of time himself.

It’s always very sad when you lose astallion, especially one that was showingpotential from limited books of mares.Monsieur Al Maury was a very good race-horse for us and Gill Duffield, winning theGr.1 President Cup as a 5 year old.

It is possible that we will consider re-locating one of the French based horses tothe UK next year if there is a demand forthem (Al Saoudi or No Risk Al Maury). Wealso have two promising potential stallionprospects that are currently in the UAE;obviously Manark as a Kahayla Classicwinner would have appeal wherever hestood. Manark is a very good lookinghorse, he’s a Mahaab horse from a Frenchline; Mahaab andMunjiz, are expensive, sothey’re not for every man’s pocket butwe’ve always tried to be reasonable so wewould hope he would make a stallion oneday.

We also have Sivit Al Maury, a son ofAkbar, so it is also possible that he could bea suitable replacement. It is difficult to sayat this point as no decisions have beenmade with regard to which horses will beretired; once we knowmore about that wewill be able to make provision for replacingMonsieur Al Maury.

It has been a little bit difficult to promotethe stallions to any affect in the UK whichis part of the reason we stand a goodnumber in France. There used to be reallyquite a lively Arabian owner – breedercommunity in the UK when we set outwith the likes of Mrs Ratcliffe, GeorgieMoore andMary Bancroft who bred forshowing but were also passionate aboutracing.

We tried to stand the stallions here inEngland in the beginning, to try and helpbreeders to develop a momentum like theyhave in France but at the moment, I worrythat a lack of enthusiasm to breed here isworking against us. I would love to seemore people in the UK get involved inbreeding and racing and we need to findnew ways to encourage more people. Wedesperately need a solid and progressiveapproach to Arabian racing in order toencourage people to invest in the breeding.

Al Jakbar (FR) has made a promising start with two wins from his first three UK runners

At the World Arabian Horse RacingConference, Breeders Premiums were a populartopic, what are your thoughts?

In France, the breeders’ premium seem towork well because of the Pari Mutuel andthe money there, they have a wonderfuladvantage – I sometimes look to see whatsome our horses accumulate in prizemoney (and breeders premiums) in Franceand it adds up to decent amounts ofmoney. When you’ve got a Frenchhomebred and you’ve got the substantialbreeders prize as well, horses such asNajlaa and Handassa pay their way. Theyare at a considerable advantage; it makesthe world of difference if you aresuccessful.

Your term as the Chairman of the

Thoroughbred Breeders Association will endedlast month, could that style of organisationever work for Arabian breeders? In this country, I don’t know; howmanyArabs are being bred now, not justracehorses, but Arabs for all disciplines? In order for an organisation to have thesame impact in the Arabian world as theTBA does for the Thoroughbreds you notonly have to have big support from a largenumber of passionate breeders, but also aconsistent international organisation tocontrol things. This would need anorganisation to work with IFAHR withelected board members who are preparedto find new breeders and lobbygovernment and promote the breedworldwide.

Page 14: The Arabian Racehorse issue 5

Should we have professional trainers?

That is something that I feel should be putright. In France, Holland and otherEuropean countries, Arabians are notconsidered second class citizens; they aretrained by professional trainers and areallowed to be housed in professionalThoroughbred yards. That is not to saythat amateur trainers should bediscouraged as they are the grass roots ofthe sport and should be commended fortheir efforts with few facilities.

If professional trainers were able to trainArabians it might just provide that crossover that we need to boost the sport in tothe main stream. In order to achieve this ofcourse, the sport would probably have tofall completely in-line with BHA racingregulation.

Another hot topic at the Conference washandicapping, do you think there is a betteroption?

Races such as ‘a winner of one race’ are anoption, but then look what happened theother day at Wolverhampton, we ended upwith two runners.

The simple truth is, in the UK, withoutJulian Smart and the Royal Cavalry ofOman, most horses are rated below 70; theoptions for high rated horses are verylimited which of course makes it difficultfor horses like Salaama, she’s too high inthe handicap, in an ideal situation wewouldn’t have run her at Lingfield [in theGroup 1 Sheikh Zayed Cup] she wouldhave gone into a nice little race and got abit more experience but those steppingstone races just aren’t there.

AROmust look at the handicappingsituation – it is ridiculous to handicap on 3

year old form. Horses develop between 3and 4 years old. Handicapping shouldcome in at 4 years old. Also, thehandicapper should not be afraid to drophorses when they lose their form.

I am not sure what the answer is, but weneed to start exploring options; we need aprogressive system, we should be able tomove our horses up the levels and open upmore competitive racing for the smallerowners at the same time.

France - where he is also allowed to trainThoroughbreds alongside Arabians

Page 15: The Arabian Racehorse issue 5

And the Racing Calendar in general?

I’ve just discovered that they are going totriple the prize money for the smallerowner in the UAE, principally in AbuDhabi, next year and therefore all thesmaller owners are encouraged to getinvolved and for new people to have a go.

Here everything seems to be moving in theopposite direction. I honestly think itridiculous to have a conditions race atGoodwood of £400,000 when you look atthe prize money at grass roots (thedisparity!), have a race for 100k and then300k goes to grass roots. The Goodwoodrace should never have been allowed tohappen so soon after the fixture atNewbury – it was a serious mistake of raceplanning.

It’s the middle and bottom end that are

lacking and I worry about the number ofbig international races that there are now. They need to try and find a way to bridgethe gap with prize money so that you win arace and you’ve at least covered some ofyour costs; then you might get more peopleinterested. The numbers of owners inThoroughbred racing are dropping off allover the world because people are nolonger prepared to consistently losemoney.

The way I see it at the moment, you have aconditions race made up of SheikhHamdan runners and nothing else. Wehave to put 2 or 3 runners in to make surethat they get a race. What we tend to get,if one of ours comes out and wins a raceeasily is that everyone assumes it is asuperstar; they never get a chance afterthat because of the handicapping system.

How did Sheikh Hamdan’s involvement inDubai Day begin?

Sheikh Hamdan is passionate about DubaiDay, he has invested a great deal of moneyin the event over the years.

Dubai Day was instigated in conjunctionwith Mrs Ratcliffe and the Arab HorseSociety; in the early days, it started off atKempton and moved to Newbury (whenthey were putting in the AW). MarkKershaw [former ARO director] was atNewbury at the time. It’s always been acomplete day of Arabian racing and we’vebuilt it up and increased the prize moneyfor the Dubai International and the Hatta –the Hatta was there to encourage fillies andmares to run, a chance for them to provethemselves before going off to be broodmares.

The Zabeel was there for those horses thathad speed and the 3 year old race onlycame in later on. I’m still not in favour ofpushing three year olds. Occasionally youget a good one which goes on [Manark] butmost of the best ones come through at fourand that’s always been our aim, to lookafter these horses for longevity. BengaliD’Albret raced until he was eight or nine, though he started in France as three yearold; Madjani and No Risk raced until eight

and nine years respectively.

It is a year round project for SheikhHamdan with the focus for him, and ourtrainers, being to prepare and run ourhorses on his favourite day. That planningstarts in January and all the trainers areaware that that day is where he wants tosee his horses run.

It is a great day of Arabian racing now, with I feel, something for everyone. I hopethat we can start to build up our DubaiInternational Arabian Races programmethroughout Europe to continue to promoteinternational runners at the meeting. It is areal challenge for everyone involved tobring it together but Sheikh Hamdanalways looks forward to the day so it makesthe effort worth it when he enjoys the day.

And the Kahayla Classic?

It is absolutely right and very importantthat the Kahayla Classic remains the blueriband event of Arabian racing. It is run inthe Middle East and on the biggest day ofracing in the region, being the first race onDubai World Cup night. I think that theKahayla Classic and the DubaiInternational are still two of the races thatpeople will want to aim at with theirArabians.

16

Page 17: The Arabian Racehorse issue 5

T H E A R A B I A N R A C E H O R S E

HH Sheikh Hamdan has won the KahaylaClassic seven times since 2000 and I amvery proud that I have been involved in theacquisition of all five of the winninghorses. Unfortunately, we haven’tmanaged to produce a homebred winner todate but we’re working on it!

And now you are sponsoring the finals atHuntingdon as well...

We are supporting the UK ARO finals atHuntingdon this year for the first time andthe Dubai International Arabian Racescommittee have really thrown their fullsupport behind it. It is a bit unfortunatethat it falls on the same weekend as theNewmarket Open Day (20th September) butwe hope that we will give the BritishArabian racing community a good seasonfinale to enjoy and we are working closelywith ARO and Huntingdon Racecourse to

attract as many visitors as possible to theevent. It is such an easy place to get to fromall directions and with some extraattractions it will be interesting to see howit goes.

Everyone involved needs to step up to theplate and help support Sheikh Hamdan’sgenerosity, these events also help to spreadan understanding of Arab culture which isvery important. We will hopefully engagewith local schools and families from EastAnglia to come and enjoy a day’s racingand learn something at the same timeabout Arabian racing. BHEST havealready kindly leant their support byoffering to bring the Equisizer with themso if we can continue to build on thateducation theme, I think it might progressto be quite a useful resource for theindustry in terms of opening the sport upto new people.

And also the last race of the season, the UKDerby...

It is very positive to have that sponsored byShadwell as part of Shadwell Day atNewmarket Racecourse on 25th September. The day features two Group 2 races andthree Listed races for the Thoroughbredsand is our main race day in the year. Ithink it is a good opportunity to give thesport some crossover appeal. The RockfelStakes replaced the Fillies’ Mile which wasmoved to Future Champions Day, leavingus without a Group 1 feature on the day.

I think it is nice for Sheikh Hamdan tohave that race; it’s towards the end of theseason which is the right time to have yourfour year old championship. I hope we canget the Europeans to come, I know it’s onlya week from the big races at Longchamp, but it’s a good opportunity for a four yearold at that time of year, so hopefully we canprovide a good showcase for Arabianracing and maybe develop things nextyear.

If you love racing and Arabians inparticular, but know little about equestrianart, the name will be familiar as deWatrigant is uncle to Nicholas andDamien. Born in 1954 in Landes, to a familyimmersed in racing for generations, he isself-taught, exhibiting his work since 1976.A year later he won a drawing prize inRome and began to show his work inearnest. He first exhibited at the Osbornein 1996 and is the most important artist tobe represented by this gallery, a leader inthe field of Sporting Art.

He has exhibited worldwide and privatecollectors include Her Majesty the Queen,HM the King of Morocco, HH SheikhMohammed al Thani, Mr &Mrs JohnMagnier and theWildenstein and Niarchosfamilies.

His style is figurative, but his experimentaltechniques in a variety of mediums

have been described as ‘impressionist’. Inaddition to his paintings and drawings, heworked with Hermès for a number of yearsproducing designs for their scarves, including ‘Horse Ballet’, ‘Jump’, ‘RacetrackSketch’ and ‘Plaza de Toros’.

In the catalogue foreword, Sir PeterO’Sullevan describes him as “an artist oftruly outstanding talent.”

He continues. “An early passion forstudying horses in his father’s stablesdeveloped into a lifelong obsession.Heading to Paris from the family home inSouthWest France, Hubert supportedhimself in a variety of occupations beforebeing able to devote himself entirely to hisdream of painting full time.

“Oil, gouache, watercolour, acrylic and ink,on surfaces ranging from canvas toracecards, help him create the fervour andexcitement of his subjects. Each paintingspeaks of deWatrigant’s deep appreciationand knowledge of his métier, and yet theyare fearless, passionate and unexpected.”

Of his work deWatrigant says “I don’tfocus on the main events and principalactions, I prefer to linger on details. At theracecourse, I ammore interested in thejockey adjusting a stirrup or the lad waitingwith his horse. I have a tendency to pickup my binoculars when others put themdown.”

The exhibition of 50 paintings anddrawings, was timed to coincide with RoyalAscot and runs until the 10th July.

The first of the Dubai InternationalArabian preparatory races series wasrun at Newbury over the same courseand distance as both the Group 1PADubai Duty Free Hatta Internationaland the Shadwell Dubai InternationalStakes. Any horse placed in the firstthree in any of the prep races, that

subsequently win the correspondingrace on Dubai Day will receive a prizebonus.

The five fillies and mares lining up forthis contest included Salaama who hadwon the Group 2 PA juvenile on DubaiDay last year. Stepping up to this tripfor the first time, she had not beendisgraced on her seasonal debut inGroup 1 company at Lingfield. She wasalso reunited with Ted Durcan who wason board for that Group 2 victory lastseason.

Dubai International Arabian RacesPreparatory Race Series

In a new initiative for 2015, DIAR committee introduced a series of preparatory races designed toencourage participation on July 26th at Newbury - highlight of the UK Arabian racing season.

Also representing HH Sheikh Hamdanwas Tawaazun. A dual winner twoseasons ago, she shaped with promisewhen just beaten a head in a conditionsevent at Newmarket last term, but hadnot been seen out since. She lookedwell in the paddock beforehand andwas a short priced favourite at the off.

Delishess has not found life easy sincecontinuing her career in England, including on her seasonal bow whenfinishing behind both Salaama andSpirited Game. She was a Grade 2 PAdistaff winner in her native UnitedStates and more was hoped for, backagainst her own sex.

Spirited Game had been a game andconsistent handicapper last season, butnot surprisingly, had found things

tougher at Group 1 level on herseasonal bow and though not likley towin, was expected to give a goodaccount.

Nekhen Taoui, is a lightly raced halfsister to Group 1 winners, Djet Taouyand Ameretto. After two starts inHolland, her best effort in the UK waswhen fourth in the UK Arabian Derbyon her final start last term. Tried in avisor here, she quickly went to thefront and was perhaps a little too freein the first time headgear. Delishesssettled in behind, ahead of Tawaazunand Salaama.

Spirited Game reared in the stalls asthey opened, giving away plenty at thestart and had to be content at the rearof the field.

Nekhen Taoui faded quickly after 7furlongs, handing the lead to Delishess, however Tawaazun was poised to takecontrol of the race. With a furlong andhalf to go, Dane O’Neill pressed thebutton and Tawaazun stretched away, impressively putting ten lengthsbetween her and her rivals in a matterof strides. Salaama stayed on forsecond but she was unable to shakeDelishess who showed improvement inthird.

Speaking after the race her trainer GillDuffield said. “She’s a beautiful fillyand she showed so much last year. She

ran a cracking race at Newmarket[when second to Taraf and ahead of AlHibaab] and then had a very bad colicthe day after, which was why she didn’trun again."She did it so nicely today and she’s inthe Hatta on Dubai Day.”

An imposing daughter of the recentlydeceased Shadwell sire Monsieur AlMaury, and Magie De Faust (a group 2winner over course and distance),Tawaazun certainly caught the eye withthis performance and merits respect innext months’ contest.

Shadwell Arabian Stallions PremierHandicap Stakes (DIAR)4yo+ 1m4f Good to FirmChepstow 12 June

The second of the Dubai InternationalArabian preparatory races series wasrun at Chepstow the following eveningas part of the racecourse’s popularladies night. The stands were filling fastas the nine runners entered thepaddock and the forecast heavy rainnever materialised - though there was alight drizzle, the ground remainedgood to firm.

The nine runner field included Azizi, thewinner of last year’s Rotana Hotels andResorts Premier Handicap, the race forwhich this was a prep. Strongly fanciedto win, he headed the handicap withVastelin Kolec. Imported from Russia,he had good form including a Group 1

win, but had failed to shine at that levelon his UK debut at Lingfield last month. As well as Azizi Gill Duffield had twoother runners, Jumeira Palm andMaazin who both had similar profiles, though Maazin had been beaten overthis trip previously.

Forta Stud’s attractive filly AuroraForta was making her handicap debut. She had been second in the juvenileGroup 2 on Dubai Day behind Salaama, before disappointing at a higher levelin France. Showing further promise onher reappearance this season, when anot disgraced second behind BonBaiser De Faust at Taunton, she was ofsome interest trying this trip for thefirst time. Also representing the PeterHammersley stable was Zayin Zachilles.Ultra consistent, he is effective at thistrip and further.

Karar had picked up a premierhandicap last year, following thedisqualification of the winner, Gelliwen, but had failed to progress. However hehad caught the eye when running onfor fourth at Taunton on his mostrecent start. Gelliwen also lined uphere, but she made little appeal fromout of the handicap.

Kamikaze had scored two premierhandicaps at Newbury last year over amile and a mile and a quarter. Carryinga penalty for his win five dayspreviously, he was effectively racing offhis highest ever mark and hadquestions to answer, having been laston his only attempt at this trip.

Zayin Zachilles set off in front, from

Vastelin Kolec, with Kamikaze wide andKarar on the rail. The early pace wassteady and Kamikaze soon settled inbehind Zayin Zachilles, with about eightlengths covering the field by thehalfway point.

Entering the home straight, Kamikazedrew level with the long time leader,Zayin Zachilles, with half a mile to run.Dane O’Neill set to work on Azizi asthe pace increased, though his staminawas assured.

Kamikaze was still travelling sweetly forPage Fuller, as the whips were raisedon the rest of the field. Zayin Zachillesfailed to pick up with the increase intempo and he started to fade.

Vastelin Kolec was running on well forpressure and for a moment lookeddangerous, but Kamikaze had a bitmore to give and bravely fought off thechallenge of Azizi, who was just pippedfor second by stablemate JuemieraPalm on the line, with Maazin runningon for fourth, ahead of Vastelin Kolec.

Speaking after the race his delightedjockey Page Fuller said. “He’s justunreal. Perhaps he just appreciatedbetter horses to run against. He’salways been such a difficult horse towork out. We got a nice tow off ofZayin Zachilles, so he settled well and

he seems to have grown up a lot morethis season. He's been much better inthe paddock this season too.“I wasn’t planning to be in front thatearly, but he took me there and we justkept going. I had to hold on to himuntil the rising ground and I could seeAzizi coming up behind me and I wasthinking that is the horse that won thebig race at Newbury and I just askedhim for more. It was magic.

“It’s been going well this season. It’snice that trainers are using me and ringme for rides, so we’ll just have to seehow it goes from here.”

Smiles all round as Malcolm Greenaway leads Kamikaze (GB)and Page Fuller in, with trainer Adam Newey behind

The DIAR Prep race series alsoincluded three new races held atDuindigt, designed to encouragefurther international participation on 26July and with the same bonus in placesas for the UK prep races should aplaced horse go on to win on DubaiDay.

Dubai International Arabian RacesStakes Listed PA 4yo+ 1800m

There were some familiar faces in theListed event over 1m1f. Karin Van DenBos’s Samima made it a pillar to postvictory, though only by the shortest ofmargins, ahead of another RoyalCavalry of Oman owned runner inVulcain Du Clos.

Gill Duffield’s representative, Radames, who had finished ahead of Samima inthe Group 1 PA Sheikh Zayed Cup atLingfield last month, tracked her untilhalfway, then faded quickly and thiseffort is probably best ignored.

Shadwell Arabian Stallions StakesListed PA 4yo 2150mPoulain Kossack , a gelded half brotherto Phraseur Kossack, set a steady pacein front and as they entered the homestraight the field spread across thetrack and there were many withchances. Dubai International Arabian Races AtNewbury Racecourse, 26th JulyInternational Stakes (DIAR)4yo+ 1m2f Good to FirmNewbury 25 June

With five of the seven runners ratedover 100 it promised to be aninteresting and informative contest, with plenty of pointers for Dubai Dayon 26 July. The top two in the marketwere last year’s Group 1 PA DubaiInternational Stakes winner Al Hibaabfor HH Sheikh Hamdan and GillDuffield, who had to give a stone to AlMahj’Hoor.

The Julian Smart trained colt had beenrunning well in top company withoutwinning, posting a career best whenthird behind Al Mourtajez and stablemate Djainka Des Forges, in the Group1 PA Emirs Sword in Doha in February.

Harry Bentley, recently appointed asstable jockey to Sheikh Mohammed binKhalifa Al Thani was booked for theride, but he was stuck in traffic and hadto be replaced by Sam Hitchcott.

Also running for Smart was Abhar, athree parts brother to Qatar WorldCup winner Areej and DubaiInternational Stakes winner Asraa MinAlbarq. This winter in Doha, he won theGroup 2 PA Qatar Derby by a neckfrom Al Mahj’Hoor and then was threeand a half lengths fifth to MisterGinoux in the Group 1 PA QatarInternational Trophy as part of theEmir’s Sword Festival in February.

The last of the Smart entries was Ba’Sil,a twice raced brother to Al Atique, whohad won the Group 1 PA QRECHarwood International Stakes atDoncaster last September.

Al Mahj'Hoor (GB) was sent off as favourite

The remainder of the field included themares, Delishess and Spirited Game, who had been third and fifthrespectively in a similar conditionsevent over course and distance twoweeks previously and another lightlyraced four year old, Zayin Zachilles.

Tadhg O’Shea set the pace with Ba’Sil,ahead of Abhar on the rail, with AlMahj’Hoor alongside. Steve Drownehad Al Hibaab tucked in behind them,in company with Spirited Game, withDelishess behind and Zayin Zodiac inthe rear. Having been tried in a visorand cheek pieces, Delishess was nowsporting blinkers; however the marewas a bit free, stumbling entering thebend, and it was all Steve Harrisoncould do to keep the partnershipintact. Despite the mishap, she was stillfighting for her head with threequarters of a mile to run, Zayin Zodiacpassed her briefly, but she made upthe ground, sticking to the inner asthey entered the straight.

Up in front, little had changed; AlMahj’hoor went wide to take the leadat three furlongs out, whilst Abhar waspressing Ba’Sil on the rail. The fouryear old was still a bit green andRichard Mullen had to switch and bringAbhar round his stable mate to takesecond, however Al Hibaab was still tomake his move, tracking Al Mahj’Hoordown the centre of the course. Withjust over a furlong remaining Al Hibaablaid down his challenge and it was animpressive performance to draw clearof Al Mahj’Hoor carrying a Group 1penalty to win by two and a halflengths.

Almost two lengths back in third, Ba’Siljust kept Abhar at bay by a neck, but inreceipt of over a stone, he looksunlikely to maintain that advantagecome Dubai Day, even with a four yearold allowance. He had made it asoundly run race throughout thoughand the time of 2.16.22 was veryrespectable on the ground.

Delishess was a long way behind in fifthand is still struggling to make animpact with her US Grade 2 winhampering her progress. The Americanform does not seem to have translatedand she deserves some respite fromthe handicapper to get competitive inthe UK. The race may have come toosoon for Zayin Zodiac, but he wasthrown in at the deep end here.Spirited Game has been highly tried allseason and with her limitationsexposed from three furlongs out, hersporting connections will need to lowertheir sights. She is a game and likeablemare who is entitled to win again.

A delighted Gill Duffield commented.“Giving away a stone and more tosome of them, I chuffed with him

because the ground is fast and whenhe won the Dubai International Stakeslast year it was very soft ground, so Ithought maybe that’s what he likes andthis would be too quick for him.

“It was the way he did it, he hasn’tbeaten ordinary horses, he’s beatengood horses. He’s hard to train, youcan’t feed him a very high protein orstarch diet, he just can’t tolerate it. Hespends all day out in the paddock, that’s the only way we can keep himright and when he is right, he’s verygood. But we never know from oneweek to the next - it is hard with him. He’d have to go straight to Dubai Daynow. It’s the Boss’s day, that’s what wetrain them for.”

Gerard Zoetelief’s filly, Prada T (NL)(Djendel x Pascha Z), who had sprung asurprise winning the Group 1 AFACEuropean Cup at Longchamp againstolder horses last month, was anotherrunner who warranted respect.

HEREFORD REVIEW

ARO’s first of three HH Sheikh MansoorFestival sponsored meetings atHereford produced a well supportedcard of seven Arabian races, with anumber of well related runners makingtheir debuts. Glorious sunshinemaintained the ground at good to firmand the portable fences had been leftout from the recent point-to-pointfixture. This meant the runners kept tothe inside line, rather than driftingacross to the stands side at the finish, asis often the case at this track.

The meeting opened with the WathbaStud Farm Cup Restricted MaidenStakes over 1m1f. Race conditions wereframed to support British owners withfewer than five horses registered withARO and the field included two once-raced half siblings to winners later in thecard. As it transpired, neither Just TheTicket (Jiyush gelded half brother toKamikaze) or Niscar Diamond Jubilee(Madjani half brother to Amyzing Zayin)broke their maidens; however the lastnamed certainly improved on his debuteffort and will be one to note in similarcompany next time.

On paper this had looked like an idealopportunity for ATTILA DE ROUAISSEto finally get off the mark and so itproved to be, as he recorded an easy13 length victory. David Turner took theinitiative right from the start on thisstrong son of the recently deceasedDormane, keeping a few lengths clearof Niscar Diamond Jubilee and Koline.

By halfway the gap had widened to fourlengths, with the second and third a

long way clear of the remainder of thefield. Stephen Gregory had taken Kolineahead of Niscar Diamond Jubilee andMike Palmer had to keep at him to stayin touch with Koline. By the time theyentered the home straight, he wasstaying on again and despite hangingslightly to the left, got up on the line totake second by half a length fromKoline.

The 7f Wathba Stallions (0-75)Handicap looked an interesting littlecontest, with three recent winnerstaking their chances. No one was keento go on and it was left to HH SheikhaFatima Ladies World Championshipwinner, Man Of Dreams to set thesteady pace. The remainder were all inclose attendance with barely twolengths covering the five runner field.

Debut winner, Zayin Zodiac andhardened handicapper KAMIKAZEsettled in behind as they entered thebend, Gelliwen was handy and KermitThe Frog, who needs to be producedlate, was a few length adrift at the rear.Entering the home straight Jay Harrishad raised the tempo on Man OfDreams and Stef Gandola had to workvery hard to get competitive on KermitThe Frog who stuck to the inner. ZayinZodiac drifted to the left loosing

valuable lengths and gifting secondplace to Kamikaze who had maintainedhis position on the rail.

Kamikaze responded well, producing astrong burst of speed to get up to win, however Man Of Dreams grittily stuckon and was possibly coming back tothe winner in the dying strides. TheLegg’s handsome grey only went downby a head. That pair were three lengthsclear of the stablemates Kermit TheFrog and Zayin Zodiac. Sent off asfavourite, Zayin Zodiac wasundoubtedly a little disappointing, butcan be forgiven this effort, on only hissecond start and his first on turf. Hewas making up the lost ground at thefinish and was merely beaten a shorthead into fourth. This was also a day toremember for Will Pettis as it was hisfirst win from only three rides underARO rules.

Of the six runners lined up for theWathba Stud Farm Cup MaidenStakes over 1m1f, five were makingtheir debuts. The four very well bred fillies andmares from the Gill Duffield stableincluded two half sisters, Sanaabek (byJehol De Cardonne) and Sunbulla (byMonsieur Al Maury), who were also halfsisters to current stable star, Al Hibaab(by Al Sakbe). She also ran Naar, aMadjani half sister to Tawaazun andAGHSAAN who had been second onher debut and was fancied to go onebetter here. The remainder alsoincluded the diminutive Southpaw, ason of the well-known handicapperWFA Leopard, who had raced underARO rules for 10 seasons.

Phil Collington and Aghsaan set the

pace, ahead of Naar and Johara BintShuwaiman, with a gap to Sunbullaahead of Southpaw and Sanaabek. Byhalf way, Johara Bint Shuwaiman wasunder pressure to maintain her positionahead of Sunbulla, with Sanaabekclosing from the rear.

Rounding the home turn Collingtonextended his lead on Aghsaan, withSteve Harrison giving chase on Naarwith Sunbulla and Sanaabek threelengths behind. Alessandro Guerrinibrought Sanaabek wide of Sunbulla tochallenge entering the straight, but thegrey ducked away from the whip andeventually unseated. Meanwhilepositions remained unaltered in frontand Aghsaan was eased down for atwo and a half length victory over Naarand Sunbulla.

There was further incident in the next, the Wathba Stallions (0-60) Handicap, over the same trip, as Al Mamoonrefused to line up and took no part inthe race. AMYZING ZAYIN, who hadlooked like a perennial maiden untilfront running tactics were employedhere on her penultimate start last term, chose to set the pace again. Thesetactics clearly suit this headstrong marebest and though she had been beatenover this trip in the Silver Final atWolverhampton, that race had come atthe end of a long season.

Top Trip, who also likes his own wayout in front tried to go with Amyzing

Zayin, but couldn’t match her pace andSteve Harrison had the whole field offthe bridle by halfway, as they blazed atrail in front.

Page Fuller vainly gave chase withWhisper ahead of her stablemateVindetta, but though Harrison had toresort to the whip, they had built up alead that couldn’t be eaten into andshe finished with her ears pricked.Harrison has forged a remarkablepartnership with this mare and it wasfitting that she should give him his onehundredth winner.

Held over 1m4f, the Wathba StudFarm Cup (0-50) Handicap started infront of the stands giving addedinterest to the crowd. It was thebiggest field of the day with ninerunners assembled and Crown OfSalona was fancied to maintain hisgood run of form. Yaqueen, a threeparts sister to Aghsaan, set the pace, but from out of the handicap she wasnot fancied to emulate her here. Insecond was LB FARRAH, who hadshown useful form without winning, shewas stepping up to this trip for the firsttime. Yaqueen who had travelled wellin the hands of Page Fuller criedenough at halfway and with the fieldtightly bunched, there seemed plentywith chances.

LB Farrah went on ahead, with the

more fancied runners breathing downher neck - Crown Of Salona came wideon the bend to challenge whilstUltimate Force stuck to the rail. SenorDublcheck was also poised to make hismove but his run has to be timed toprecision. LB Farrah kept on gamely upthe straight and had enough in hand tokeep Senor Dublcheck at bay by half alength. A further two lengths away inthird, the lightly raced Ultimate Forcehas shown more now in handicapcompany, though fourth placedCallymay was again disappointing.

A daughter of dual UK champion stayerSambist, it is perhaps not so surprisingthat LB Farrah relished the step up intrip and this gave owner-trainer-jockey,Teresa Gavin her first win as a trainer.

Despite being the smallest field withonly four runners, the hottest maidenof the day was the 7f Wathba StallionsMaiden Stakes. Bred by MandolynnHill Farm, who stand his sire Kaolino,Katonahotinroof MHF had shownplenty of promise on his debut lastseason, running on late for second andonly beaten a length. He lookedmagnificent in the paddock and fittedwith a visor, he was sent off jointfavourite with Gill Duffield’s Mazaaya.Making up the field were twodebutants, Jennys Lees’ Majid BinKrayaan, who shares his sire withstablemate Shuwaiman Al Kebir andanother Sheikh Hamdan runner, ALKABEER, a gelded son of Al Jakbar.

Matt Johnson set a good pace on AlKabeer, a length ahead of Majid BinKrayaan, with Katonahotinroof MHF onthe rail and Mazaaya tucked in behind.Majid Bin Krayaan quickly fell behind at

halfway, he can only benefit from therun and will do better in time. At thehead of affairs, Johnson and Al Kabeerhad their lead challenged on both sidesentering the straight, Mazaaya on thestands side and Katonahotinroof MHFup the rail.

It looked as though KatonahotinroofMHF would gain the advantage andSimon Walker had his head in front fora few strides but Al Kabeer would notgive up, rallying strongly, he justchinned Walker’s mount in the photo.Mazaaya was not disgraced twolengths away in third and there will beother opportunities for her.

This was an excellent performancefrom the three year old, albeitreceiving an age allowance and thetime was only just over a second slowerthan the following feature race overthe same trip.

The Wathba Stud Farm Cup (0-95)Handicap Stakes was just as excitingand also went to a photo. Three of thefive runners in this event had won theirseasonal debuts last term, Vent DeFaust, Jaldi Karo and, at the top of thehandicap, Toutatix. He had won theEmirates Airline Premier Handicap onDubai Day, though had been a littledisappointing in two subsequent runs.

Jaldi Karo had to be led into the startand still gave away a few lengths to therest, led by Vent De Faust and PhilCollington. Tracked by Ashraaf for thesame stable, the field soon closedentering the bend, with Jaldi Karorunning free in first time headgear andwith a slipped saddle his chance wasgone. However Vent De Faust was not

getting an easy lead, Collington kickedon, with Steve Harrison hard at workon Ashraaf, though none weretravelling as well as Simon Walker onToutatix, a shade behind in third.

The whips were raised on the Duffieldpair as Walker brought Toutatixbetween them and in the last halffurlong they fought three abreast tothe line. Though not quite as close asthe maiden, Ashraaf denied Toutatix bya head, with Vent De Faust a halflength back in third. This was a braveeffort by Toutatix giving weight (andtwo years) away, but Ashraaf alsofranked the form of the maiden, as itwas he who had beatenKatonahotinroof MHF ast season.

This meeting turned out to be a day offirsts – first ARO win for novice jockeyWill Pettis and a first win as a trainer forTeresa Gavin. Also, significantly for astud who has just lost a promisingstallion in Monsieur Al Maury, the firstUK winner, and in fact a double, forShadwell Arabian's young stallion AlJakbar with Aghsaan and Al Kabeer.

However star of the day had to be SteveHarrison who joined an elite club inArabian racing, riding a total of 100winners and just for good measure, herode a double to finish the meeting on101. He began riding Arabians in 2002,scoring his first victory on Anwar Wahidfor Georgina Ward, riding out his claimin his first season.

Speaking at the close of the dayHarrsion said. “It’s unreal and on

Amyzing Zayin too! But it is a massiveweight off my mind to get the hundred. This is my fourteenth season. I’m fortynow and I’ve been in thoroughbredracing for over twenty years. I had a fewrides as an amateur when I was in myearly twenties and didn’t really getanywhere.

"Then I started with the Arabians and Ihad a fantastic first and second seasonwith Georgina. I was also riding out forJohn Mackie (licensed Thoroughbredtrainer) at the time and when he saw Iwas riding winners against top jockeyslike Willie Supple, he suggested I takeout my Amateur license again, so I rodemy first winner under rules for him andhad a further six for Reg Hollinshead. Ireally enjoyed myself, but the ridesbegan to dry up and I only ride inArabian racing now.

48

When the penny finally dropped. Amyzing Zayin (GB) gets off the mark at the 17th attempt withSteve Harrison at Hereford last September

Harrison explained how he gotinvolved with horse racing. “I was intosport as a kid, football, cricket, and soon, but never really that good and itwas my granddad who got meinterested in racing through hisgambling. But the riding was all off myown back, I got a few riding lessonsand a girl that worked with my Dad,was a nanny for John and Mary Mackie;so I got involved that way and learnt toride by sitting on horses walking backfrom the gallops when they’d worked, this was at his yard in ChurchBroughton in Derbyshire. He’s stillthere now.

He continued. “I’ve been a stallshandler for nearly 10 years now, it’s abrilliant job and it allows me to doother things such as this. Though thesedays I’m involved with PeterHammersley’s stable, it’s been good toride for HH Sheikh Hamdan recently, toride quality horses is wonderful. Paul

[Simmons] has some nice horses thisyear, I’ve been able to watch Paul’shorses develop, he’s breeding betterhorses now, so I was delighted whenZayin Zodiac won first time out andthough things didn’t go his way today,I’m sure there’ll be more races in him.

Another win for Team Hammersley - Zayin Zodiac (GB) at Wolverhampton. Left to right: PeterHammersley, Paul Simmons, Joe Walsh, Steve Harrison and Steph Gandola

"The most winners I’ve ridden on anyone horse was on Hidalgo with seven,so it was a brilliant moment to win hisfinal race on him at Wolverhamptonlast season; though I’m not far behindon Zayin Zachilles."[five wins to date]

Peter Hammersley, trainer of AmyzingZayin was delighted by Harrison’ssuccess. “Steve’s my stable jockey andhe’s been with me for four seasonsnow. He’s been brilliant, he has somuch input into each of the horses andwhen he gets off a horse at the end ofa race he can tell me so much about it.The hundred winners was his goal fromlast season – he didn’t quite make it

last year – but he made a brilliant startthis year.

“He was talking about retiring over thewinter, but I think the 100 winnertarget kept him going. He rides outfour times a week for me, so he gets toknow all the horses before they go onthe track which helps a lot. We’ve gotsome very nice horses this year andPaul [Simmons] thinks the world of him.I think that was another reason for himto keep going this year. It’s justfantastic, he really deserves it.”

50

Signing off in the best possible way. Hidalgo (GB) makes his last race a winning one atWolverhampton on finals day last year, beating Aljawaaher (FR) by a head.

Two interesting newcomers in theshape of Maidaan and Habeebah and apaddock check will be essential.Zamhareer wasn't knocked about in agood conditions race on his debut andhe is likely to improve for that andcould go very close. But there was alsoa lot to like about Naar's racecoursedebut. She was a little green early onover slightly further than this, but thepenny dropeed late on. She's likely tobe more street wise this time aroundand could be tough to beat.

Much could depend on whetherprevious course winner Top Trip isgranted a soft lead. He won earlier thisseason but has yet to win off a mark inthe 50's. Vindetta is down in grade andis surely capable of winning races butthe cheek pieces which seem to haveprompted a little bit of improvement inher the last twice are now left off.

Shuwaiman Al Kebir isn't out of this butall his best form is when fresh. So achance is taken on Kiraa back to amore suitable trip, at a track she's wonat before and runs for the first time inthis grade.Naar (FR) second here last month

Secret Sentinel and Samir areinteresting newcomers, particularly thelatter and a paddock check is advised.Whilst Kallista shaped very promisinglyon her racecourse debut and is capableof winning races, that may come inhandicap company. Nekhen Taoui hasan official rating of 93 and althoughshe's been highly tried so far in hercareer in the UK, it would bedisappointing if she couldn't win amaiden of this nature.

Syrah Gris has paid for his consistencybut he's now back below his lastwinning mark - which came over thiscourse and distance two years ago.Parma T is dropped in grade and couldgo close if reproducing her UK debuteffort, but she was disappointing lasttime. Zayin Zachillies has won overcourse and distance but most of hisbest form of late as been over furtherthan this. Though Man Of Dreams isoff a career high mark and his formoften tapers off in the second half ofthe season, this does look a goodopportunity for him to win again at atrack he clearly likes.

for this yard here last time. They arequickly dispensed with and he's surelycapable of better than we saw on thatoccasion. A step back down in trip maywell help Oriental Myth (headgear alsoremoved) where as it might not helpstable companion Sharaf who won overfurther last time out (headgear againnow left off). The stables' other runnerVent De Faust steps up in trip whichlooks sure to suit. He was closing allthe way to the line when third hererecently over 7 furlongs and could betough to beat.

Handicap debutant Koline isinteresting, particularly if reproducingher debut effort but she does have toprove she stays. Katwalk won on herseasonal debut five seasons ago. Thatvictory came off todays mark and she'swon here before, but in recent yearsshe's needed a run or two to get topeak fitness. Gelliwen is a course anddistance winner but needs to bounceback from a poor run - albeit in muchbetter company. Whisper is the pick, she won here last season over courseand distance off a 10 pound highermark and has ran well twice thisseason.
