Dog Walking Group in Sprotbrough.

Dogs are pack animals and enjoy each other's company, but we keep them apart and walk them in isolation, often going a different route to avoid meeting other dogs! This leads to unsocial used dogs, who do not know how to relate to each other.

If you would like to socialise your dog, allow it to play with other dogs off lead or just walk with other dogs, join me in forming a weekly dog walking group.

No great distances, but plenty of open spaces. If you would like to put aside an hour each week to meet other dog owners, contact me by email at [email protected] so that we can arrange a day, place and time.

Don Gorge Update I have been reminded that it’s been too long since I wrote anything for The Arrow, and I consider my knuckles rapped, but there has been good reason as so many changes have been underway that it was difficult to know what to say that wouldn’t have changed by the time it had been published. I have, however, put one or two articles on the blog in the meantime so, if you have the internet, have a look at those. You could even become a ‘friend’ and receive notifications when anything new is put up: http://dongorgecommunitygroup.blogspot.com

The Don Gorge Community Group does, however, still exist and our conservation volunteers are proof of that if nothing else. They continue to do a great job in the gorge, albeit now under a different framework and with Ken Green, one of the long-serving members of the team taking on the admin/liaison role.

The cuts have made a great impact on many voluntary groups and we have not been the exception. In May 2012, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT) told us about the Lower Don Partnership (LDP) and we were invited to join. Many of the agencies represented on the Don Gorge Strategic Partnership (DGSP) were already on this Steering Group so, after considering all the options, we agreed and the DGSP was disbanded. We had already lost the DGSP co-ordinator and felt we had no real choice. The result has been that, if the community group wants anything to change, it has to be more proactive.

The LDP is now called Revival and consists of two sub-groups: one for biodiversity issues and one relating to communities, now known as the ‘People’ sub-group, of which we are a member. The aim of this group is to increase access to the river Don by way of extending footpaths and increasing awareness of places of interest along its length.

There is currently a list of 26 projects up for consideration, but only 7 are in development and 4 of these are in the Don Gorge: the fish pass; parking on Nursery Lane; creation of a heritage trail, incorporating the Copley Pump; and towpath maintenance. The remaining 3 are: creation of an Arksey History Trail; creation of Bentley Park Community Garden; and a public rights of way (PROW) study.

Page 5: The Arrow December 2013

5

The next thing to hit us was the loss of support from DMBC’s countryside warden, as our conser-vation volunteers have worked with Dennis Roe since the group was first formed. Fortunately, YWT (which now manages much of the woodland in the Don Gorge) and the Canal & Rivers Trust (C&RT) (previously British Waterways, which has now become a charity, have agreed to organise and oversee the volunteers’ work in future.

From the Revival projects listed above, I can re-port that work on the fish pass, minus the hydro power plant, has now commenced and should be completed sometime in the new year; the proposal to have a car park at the top of Nursery Lane, to stop people parking on and spoiling the grass verg-es, is at an impasse as the owners of the land do not feel that we can fulfil the legal requirements necessary; the heritage trail is a longer-term aim, into which the Copley Pump will be incorporated; and the erosion of the river bank is not our re-sponsibility, except for reminding the C&RT that it is getting worse. Beyond these, we are still inves-tigating the possibility of a visitor centre at The Boat Inn and a possible ‘Right Up Our Street’ art project. Enough to be going on with I think.

Many of these needs have recently been discussed with councillors and officers of DMBC and we are hopeful of their support as a result.

In the meantime, the work on the disappearing footpath near the landing stage has been complet-ed, as has the work on the river bridge which necessitated traffic lights for a few weeks.

An advanced notice: the lock gates are being re-placed in the new year and an Open Day is planned for Sunday 16th February 2014 when ac-cess into the lock itself should be possible. Put this date in your diary now, as it will be a very rare event; more publicity will be available in due course.

Lastly, just a reminder that new volunteers are always needed and will be made very welcome. See our noticeboard at the landing stage or con-tact me for details of dates, etc.

News from Copley Junior School

Visit to Zhongshanlu Primary School It was an absolute honour to be one of 10 Doncaster teachers all visiting our various link schools in Dalian, China. I was welcomed to Zhongshanlu Primary School as a special friend and it was great to finally meet English teacher, Connie, after our numerous emails over the previous year. The whole school were waiting in the playground to greet us and there was a distinct buzz of excitement as we joined them for the welcome ceremony and speeches. The children could easily have been Copley children: happy, friendly and keen to learn. They loved to try out their English with us and chatted about all sorts of things. It was very obvious that they enjoyed school and were proud to show us their work books. We soon realised there were many similarities between both our schools: the belief that children learn through doing, the value of discussion in lessons and a committed and dedicated team who care that the children achieve their potential. Half an hour of morning and afternoon exercises every day was quite an amazing sight as you can see from the photo below. This is thought to help the transition between playtime behaviour and the quieter, more focussed approach needed for learning time. It was sad to leave our new friends but we have many ideas for developing the links between our two schools. Mrs Adams

Children in Need The children of our School Council decided that teachers and children should come to school dressed in our pyjamas or onesies in support of Children in Need. Well behaved teddy bears were allowed to come to school also! We had a fun day in school; this included children (and teachers) taking part in a catwalk show to disco music to present their nightwear to the school community! Thank you to everyone for your support, we will let you know how much we raised in the next issue of the Arrow.

Year 5 visit to the Royal Armouries On Thursday 14th November Year 5 went on a school visit to the Royal Armouries. We all loved it because it was so fascinating for our topic on the Tudors. There were loads of magnificent things to see including statues, paintings and so much more. There was lots to see, touch and do. We got to try on a real Tudor helmet, this was so you could find out how much you could see when you were wearing it. We learned about life in Tudor times, about the Field of the Cloth of Gold when Henry met the French king and we learned about tournaments and jousting. We saw Henry VIII’s suit of armour. It was really amazing. By Sarah and Eliza, Year 5

We look forward to sharing some of our school news again soon. Best Wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher
