The degree programme ART.Education at the HBK Braunschweig is the right choice for those who want to develop a teaching practice based on an advanced ar-tistic practice for secondary schools. Students will learn how to empower school students to develop personal aesthetic experiences and approaches to art, architecture and design.

The course duration for the Bachelor degree is eight se-mesters, the majority of which (six semesters) are spent studying Fine Art. In the foundation and spe cialised classes, students will develop, observe and discuss the results of their work together with students enrolled in the Fine Art degree programme. They will become acquainted with a variety of workshops and techniques and develop their own exhibitions and concepts for art education.

In accompanying seminars in art education and peda-gogy, in Art History and Aesthetics, and in Media Stud-ies, students are given the skills they need to engage with the complexity and range of art as a school subject. Internships in schools and museums will give students a chance to experience teaching in real life and can be used as a basis for their own projects.

The accompanying secondary subject (German, English or History) at Technische Universität Braunschweig is a shorter course. Students who successfully complete their secondary subject are awarded a teaching qualification that entitles them to teach classes in this subject up to year 10.

What happens after graduation?

In order to teach Art plus German, English or History at a secondary school in Germany, it is a basic condition that you must first obtain a Bachelor’s degree. This permits you to continue on to a Master’s degree in Education and subsequently, to the practical stage of teacher train-ing that is the prerequisite for obtaining full certification as a state-recognised school teacher in Germany.

The application process at the HBK Braunschweig takes place in several stages. During the pro cess applicants must provide proof of special artistic aptitude. This can be obtained either through success ful participation in Frühstart Kunst (www.fruehstart-kunst.de) or through the submis-sion of an application with a portfolio and successful participation in a selection interview. To apply with portfolio, you should complete the following three steps:

1. Submission of online application via the HBK Braunschweig website

2. Submission of hard copy application with supporting documents by 15 March

3. Submit a portfolio of work (either in person or sent by post)

Note: Your portfolio must be submitted and have arrived at the HBK Braunschweig by 31 March. Relevant information and a list of dates on which you may submit your portfolio in person will be published on our website.

The portfolio must be no larger than A1 size and should contain 20 to 30 of your own artworks, which must be originals, not copies. These may be in any genre of your choice, including draw-ing, painting, graphics/printmaking, sculpture, collage, montage, photography, prints (insofar as these provide the technical basis for the art-works), film/video (max. 3 minutes in length) or sound sculpture/sound installation.

Applicants who wish to specialise in film/ video must submit a minimum of 1–3 films and/or videos of any length.

Applicants who wish to specialise in sound sculpture/sound installation must submit at least 1–3 audio-visual concepts with a focus on media of their choice.

Overall, the submitted artworks should con-vey what you find emotionally moving and what topics matter to you as an artist. It is important that the works give a personal sense of how you have approached the task you have set your-self each case and how you have found your own artistic resolution without recourse to standard-ised methods.
