Comic strip The Beauforts

Cartoon heads come in all sizes
and shapes.

Drawing cartoon heads is easy. All we have to do is go step-by-step. Start with a shape and put in feature guidelines. Then put in the face features. Let’s start with an oval and a
square. 1. Draw a shape and then sketch
in vertical and horizontal
guidelines.
2. Draw in the
features.
3. Draw in the details and erase the guidelines
4
Let’s try some more shapes. Let’s try a triangle and a diamond shape. Start with the guidelines again and fill in the details.

Let’s try having the cartoon character look to the left or right. Imagine that the shape is 3-D, such as in a ball. The vertical line is more curved and closer to the left or right, depending which way the character is facing.

To draw caricatures you first have to know how to draw a realistic human head.
1. Draw an oval. 2. Divide the oval
into a vertical line.
3. Divide the oval into 4 equal
horizontal areas.
14
When drawing caricatures you adjust the guidelines up or down to exaggerate features. By putting the eye and nose guidelines higher than normal you
exaggerate the chin.
This character might resemble a NFL linebacker. Pick a celebrity and experiment by adjusting the eye and nose guidelines. Try 3 different versions. Which one resembles the
celebrity more?
15
On the other hand, if you put the eye and nose guidelines lower, you exaggerate the forehead.
This guy’s name could be called “egg head.” Maybe he could pass as an alien.
