Jesus’ disciples felt very alone after he died. They were not sure where to turn. Jesus wanted them to be as prepared to carry on as they could be, so he appeared to them many times. Sometimes they recognized him easily, other times they did not. He helped them understand the things they would need to know in order to continue his work on earth. He knew their job would be hard and that they would need all the help they could get. Before he ascended into heaven he promised them all the strength they would need in order to carry on. They probably did not have a very clear understanding what that was all about. They were astounded when they saw the power of God at work in their lives and the things God could accomplish through them. Even though Jesus was not with them to speak with them every day, they were not alone. The power of God’s spirit was with them every step of the way. It is the same with us. Sometimes, when we need to carry on without a loved one, it can feel as if they are still there with us, giving us the strength and courage to carry on. Like Jesus’ disciples, we can be tempted to give up and lock ourselves in our room. As we hear in our first reading, “Why are you standing there looking up at the sky?” There is work to do. There is a gospel to preach. And so it is with us. We are never alone either. God strengthens us for our journey and gives us the gifts of the Spirit to help us carry on. We need to continue to grow and continue Jesus’ work here on earth. This week we can consider that mission. We can seek God’s will and strive to do it. We may just discover, that when we strive to do God’s work, we are never alone. Have a good week! Peace, Fr. Chris The Ascension of the Lord

Stand and be Counted

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its

dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and

responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner

makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism,

weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals.

We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and

Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a

registered, active and contributing member.

So, are you a registered parishioner?

If not, please consider registering. Registration forms

are available in the Parish Ministry Center or online

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Surprisingly, the church moved very slowly in claiming marriage as a focus of attention and care. Nearly everywhere in the Roman world, citizens agreed on how to celebrate marriage. Consent of the man and woman is what made a marriage valid in the eyes of the law, and although there was a traditional ceremony, it was home‑based and optional. The ceremony was for showing the social status of the families involved (the procession ideally detoured through crowds), and for reminding the woman of her legal transfer from her father’s control to her husband’s. The “big moment” of the cere-mony had nothing to do with vows, but with the bride’s donning the yellow veil with red highlights that was the daily wear of married women. A wedding feast included soothsayers and animal sacrifice to the new household’s gods. Chris-tians found that distasteful, of course, but since marriage was a family matter, they could edit things out. The church was comfortable with this, and sometimes recommended that the couple seek the advice of the bishop. His permission was only required for the marriage of a cleric, or for a marriage Rome didn’t recognize, such as between a free woman and a slave. There was no blessing, no liturgy, no priest. Christians followed the customs of the day, but they knew that custom and relationships were transformed from within themselves by the fact of their baptism. Outwardly, Christians married exactly as their pagan neighbors, but they certainly invested the usual gestures with a dynamic sense of Christ’s presence. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.
