The Happy Corner
At our February 8th meeting Patrick Stonier’s name was drawn
from our Big Kitty and since he was present, Patrick is now
$300.00 richer!
“Oops, I Forgot My Card!”Starting April 1st there will be a small fi ne levied if you need to be buzzed into the
building because you forgot your access card. There will be a collection jar in the
Lounge where you can deposit your 50 cent donation to the Dumbwaiter Fund.
Why the fi ne? Our offi ce and Bar staff are actually pretty busy people, and buzzing
a member in who forgets his card is indeed part of their job, but it also seems like
a good excuse to collect some money for the Dumbwaiter Fund, and perhaps will
motivate our members to actually carry their cards on their persons.
For those of you who may not remember their initiation the Lodge Esquire in-
structs the following:
The membership card, which will be presented to you by the Secretary, is a means of
identifi cation. It shows that you are a member in good standing in this Lodge. You should carry it with you at all times. You are required to present it in order to gain
admission to this Lodge, and without it you cannot gain admission to another Lodge.
So please, try to remember your cards, or if not, try to remember to have a couple
of quarters in your pocket.
ER’s Message
As a famous General once said “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away”. Well
this ER is not going to fade away. The Elks are like an extended family to Mavis and
me. When I am asked to help out I will do my best to be there for the Lodge. This
has been a great year for me - I had great offi cers and members who were there
when I needed them. I could not have asked for anything better for my fourth
and last term (I hope!) as ER. I was really pleased when a lot of the new members
stepped up when they were needed.
As this will be my last ER message, I want to congratulate the Offi cer of the Year
Michael Golden, our incoming Exalted Ruler. Congratulations also to the Elk of the
Year Mary Bratten, and our Citizen of the Year Jim Marston. I also had the opportu-
nity to give special recognition to Fred Hatfi eld for his continued contributions to
our Lodge and to Deanna LaBrensz who received a Special Service Commenda-
tion award for unwavering support of the Ashland Lodge.
There were so many members who could have won awards and I wish I could
have given out a lot more, but as you know there are rules we have to follow. To all
the new offi cers I wish you the best of luck next year and as always I look forward
to seeing everyone at the Lodge.Fraternally yours,Herm Blum, ER
Dues, Snooze, Looz
Hello Ashland BPOE #944 Members!!
If you notice, about this time each year your dues at old #944 and your Federal
taxes become due. BPOE dues are due and payable by April 1 each year (by man-
date of the Grand Lodge) and the Grand Lodge portion must be sent to the Grand
Lodge on that date.
So, on April 1 of each year our secretary, Steve Booth, must send the dues for
ALL 750 + members of #944 to Grand Lodge. Thus the unhappy, mournful look
on Steve's face because only about 300+ of us have paid our dues by April Fool’s
Day! This results in a severe defi cit in the bankroll of #944. In the neighborhood of
$10,000.........Ouch.
So what's the answer?? You will receive your bill for dues for the 2012 fi scal year in
March AND THEY ARE DUE AND PAYABLE BY APRIL FIRST. Please keep Steve happy
and pay your dues on time.
ELKS CARE-----ELKS SHARE-----Do you care enough to pay on time?
Convention Volunteers...
Just Do It!
The First OSEA Convention at the Ashland Lodge since 1965!
The clock is ticking as we approach the April state convention. If you have not
already signed up to volunteer, please consider doing so right now!! We are cur-
rently organizing the schedule and need to know when you are available and
what you would like to help with.
The following is a list of the areas of service that we need help with. Servers, buss-
ers and Kitchen help are particularly needed since we will have open dining for
breakfast, lunch and dinner each day of the convention, as well as many special
VIP functions that are running concurrently.
If you have an OLCC Servers License, we need your help with both the 2nd fl oor
lounge and the Basement bar which will be up and running through the entire
convention.
Server / Busser: Will serve meals (and take orders) for delegates & guests during
breakfasts, lunches, dinners & special events as well as bus tables to keep the din-
ing area attractive.
Bar Staff : OLCC Permit Required.
Facilities: Help set up and/or break down tables and chairs. Work on assuring that
the rooms are properly prepared for functions
Kitchen: Assist cooks and servers in any way needed as well as clean and wash
dishes.
Greeter: Stationed at each of three locations to assist and guide visiting members.
Locations are: Ashland Lodge, Ashland Springs Hotel, Ashland Historic Armory.
Transportation: Drive shuttle vans around town to transport delegates & guests
to and from their hotels and the Lodge and other event locations.
Parking: Attend our parking lots (We have more parking during convention.)
Registration: sign in members, hand out badges
Volunteer Station: Check in and help to coordinate the volunteer staff .
Coff ee Station: Assist at the Coff ee Kiosk at the Historic Armory.
Decorating: Help set up tables and decorate for functions.
To sign up, you can either contact me directly at 541.482.3390 or via email at vol-
[email protected] or sign up in person in the Lodge either at the offi ce or
the Lounge.
We need you to make these events go smoothly. Let’s show Elks from oth-
er parts of the state that the Ashland Lodge really knows how to throw a
party!
Mary Danca,
Convention Volunteer Coordinator
Lodge Esquire
Convention Wish List!We are in need of the following for the OSEA Convention which will be at our
Lodge April 25 - April 28th. Please consider helping with the following:
Passenger Vans: Do you have a passenger van that we could use for transport-
ing delegates around for Convention?
Spare Rooms: Do you have a spare room for a volunteer from another Lodge to
stay while helping us with our Convention?
Classic Cars: to use as Limousines for the Grand Exalter Ruler and his wife, as well
as our State Sponsor the Hon. James Damon, PGER and his wife, and current State
President Jim Marovich and his wife.
Please contact Michael Golden 541.292.0472 or Fred Hatfi eld 541.601.5002 if you
can help with any of the above.
Lodge Access & Parking for ConventionDuring the OSEA convention our lodge is not OUR lodge, it belongs to the OSEA.
During this time access to the Lodge will be only available to registered Elks and
guests. This means if you want to come into the Lodge for a meal or have a drink
in the Lounge, you will need to be Registered and have a Guest ribbon displayed
on your person.
To do this properly, we need to make a motion on the lodge fl oor to this eff ect.
This motion will be discussed during the Lodge meeting on March 7th. It will be
voted on at our next Lodge meeting on the 14th. The motion will state that “All
who enter the Lodge building from Thursday April 26th through Saturday April
28th must be registered and display either Delegate, Guest or Volunteer ribbons.
Any Elk who wishes can pre-register at the Lodge before the event, or during
posted Registration hours during the event at a cost of $5. The charge will be
waived by working at least one volunteer shift during the event. A valid Ashland
Elks Card must be presented at time of registration”.
The parking lot is going to be over capacity during the convention. We urge you
to fi nd alternate parking during the event. The parking lot will be for registered
attendees of the convention. And will be closed on Saturday for the President’s
Reception. Please help us succeed in this important event for our lodge by fi nding
another place to park for a few days.

Lodge. An informal friendly game is run every Tuesday at
11am on the mezzanine during lunch.
Attention Bridge PlayersCome join a great group of people for party bridge at the
Lodge Tuesdays, 10:00am until 3:00pm. Enjoy lunch and some
interesting conversation. We need players and substitutes.

The Crabs Are Gone!I would like to thank everyone who came down to the Crab feed on February 11th. We came out ahead and made some money for the Lodge.
I always panic when I see that we have some Crabs still hanging around in the cooler but everyone comes together and buys the last of them to take home.
I would like to thank everyone who helped, Russ Silbiger who always does the spaghetti sauce and spaghetti, Keith and Becky Brown for serving and doing the dishes,
my Mom (Mary Lee) for serving, my son Matt and Fred Walter for doing the dishes, my wife Barbara for taking the money, Leslie Salem for doing the Oyster Shooters
and the 50/50 drawing and also Mary Danca who is always ready to do something.
Last but not least the Bar staff who jumped in and helped, April and Kathy.
Larry Christensen, PER
PER/Old Timers Night & Longevity AwardsApproximately 70 Elks and guest enjoyed a wonderful Prime Rib Dinner put on by the PER Association and prepared by PER Jim Potter. Then the fun began with PER’s
taking over the lodge meeting (71 members in attendance) and showing how a meeting should be run. The evening culminated with 14 members recieving their
longevity pins. Since then another 12 members have collected their pins from the offi ce. There were a total of 34 who could have gotten pins. Congratulations to all
who earned a pin and special congratulations go to Leo A. Zupan for earning his 70 year pin!

Veterans ReportMore than 20 of this country’s fi nest were honored Dec. 10 during the Ashland
Elks Lodge annual Veterans’ Christmas Party and Luncheon, which also was at-
tended by nearly 40 Elks and their guests.
The American veterans, participants in the Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recov-
ery Center of the Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics in White City,
were formally greeted by Exalted Ruler Herm Blum. After a blessing by Chris-
tine Belcastro, PER, guests enjoyed a meal of lasagna, salad and homemade pie a
la mode prepared by lodge Executive Chef Jim Potter, PER, with assistance from
members Neal Sabin and Paul Standring. Music selected by lodge D. J. Scott Curry
was era appropriate and was especially enjoyed by those in attendance.
Veteran guests, who enjoyed the sit-down meal service provided by a number
of lodge volunteers, were issued awards presented by Michelle Cordon of the
SORCC. “The vets are accustomed to buff et lines and they especially enjoy the sit-
down service Elks provide them each year,” said lodge Veterans Committee Chair
Rhonda Brustol. “It’s a real treat for them. We heard many wonderful comments
on how beautifully the lodge was decorated for the holidays this year, and we
were blessed with wonderful weather on the afternoon of the event.”
Honored Elks guests also included Bill and Althea Maddox. Althea, who was once
very active in the Ashland Elkettes program, chaired the fi rst Elks Veterans Christ-
mas Party event in 1984. Santa also attended those early parties, handing out gifts
to attendees. Veterans attending the December, 2011, luncheon received gift cer-
tifi cates of their choice to either McDonald’s, Burger King or the Dollar Store.
The Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center serves veterans who are ex-
periencing serious mental illness together with any form of serious impairment in
social, occupational or school functioning. It off ers individualized recovery goal
planning, peer support services, treatment groups, community activities and one-
on-one support counseling. Its mission is to help veterans experience recovery,
wellness, hope and empowerment. PRRC staff ers encourage and teach veterans
skills that will help them reach their full potential and to move them into mean-
ingful roles in the community.
“The veterans feel very comfortable in the company of Ashland Elks,” said Rhonda.
“They know that as long as there are Elks, they will not be forgotten. This is very
important to them. Many of them have trouble interacting with the community
at large, but with Elks, they know they are accepted and appreciated. Thank you
to all who help make this annual event possible.”

Learn Tango on Third FridaysWhat comes to your mind when Argentine Tango is men-
tioned? ….A dance of passion, intrigue, beauty, grace, ex-
citement, drama.....? Do you immediately think of it as a
dance outside your ability, comfort zone, culture?
If these thoughts resonate, read further as Clay Nelson
and Nancy Heyerman will dispel the mystery and bring it
into focus - your focus, and right here at the Ashland Elks!
We will be teaching absolute beginner Argentine Tango
classes in the beautifully remodelled fi rst fl oor club space on the 3rd Friday of
each month beginning in March.
Clay Nelson has been a professional tango instructor in the Northwest for
15 years, produces four tango festivals yearly (two in Portland which are the larg-
est in the U.S., one in Ashland and one in Mexico) and currently teaches weekly
tango classes in Ashland. Nancy Heyerman, an accomplished modern dancer and
member of HeartDance Company, has been dancing Argentine Tango for fi ve
years, has taken classes from numerous Argentine tango masters, and partners
Clay in his weekly classes.
Tango is taking the US by storm and it is for everyone who wants to move
to beautiful classic music and share with others in the structure of a dance that
allows for both safe social discourse, fun and if truly caught in it’s magic, deep
intimate connection on the dance fl oor. Please join us to taste the fun and beauty
of the Tango.
An Absolute Beginners Class will take place from 7:00--8:00pm and is
FREE! Then if you want to stay for dancing afterwards, there will be a milonga
(tango dance) from 8:00-10:30pm at the cost of $5. No partner is necessary, just
come in comfortable walking shoes.
Note: Non Elks members will be invited for this event as our guests for the
purpose of attracting their interest in the benefi ts of BPOE membership. Also, feel
free to bring a friend along!
Clay Nelson, 541.646.8705
