PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Members and Friends

I, for one, had never heard of Circus W.A. although I had noticed the big top

by Clancy’s Fish Bar along Adelaide Street in Fremantle and thought no more

about it. Well, that changed as from Monday night when Jo Smith the Artistic

Director of Circus W.A. opened our eyes and our hearts. After the meeting, I

had to find out more as I couldn’t quite understand how Jo’s presentation,

especially the video of differently-abled people participating fitted into

“circus”. The website certainly promotes what I imagine a circus to be like —

trapeze, tight wire walking, juggling, etc., and involvement with differently

abled people appears to be an adjunct to this. The take away messages for

me were that everyone is welcome, fees are somewhat incidental and needs

appear to be accommodated. Almost like a large extended family. If you

visit their website, for a very modest amount you can become a Friend of the

Freo Big Top.

Of course, we had our annual Lift the Lid Hat

Day but time got away from us and not

celebrated to the fullest. However, thank you

to everyone who took the time and the effort

to participate and thank you for your

donations. I particularly liked Keith’s head gear

as it reminded me of the novelty grass potato

heads on sale in Fremantle Markets.

It was a pleasure to have Elise Powell, one of

our RYPEN candidates join us on Monday

night to give us her thumbnail sketch of

the RYPEN weekend. Listening to

Elise, it makes the programme come to life

and re-enforces the benefits that participants

gain. Well done Rotary and we should take a

pat on the back.

The McCulloch’s scooped the pool with wine

by taking out the door prize and Colin trying

to follow in Gail’s footsteps and draw the

Joker. Better luck next time Colin, but I am

sure the bottle of Shiraz will not go astray.

Our plans for this year’s Christmas Party are

progressing, more news next week at the

meeting but keep Monday 14 December free

as that looks to be the date which is locked in

for the big event, which is not too far away.

It’s that time of the year when the Club is

looking for members to take an active role

and put their hand up to be involved in Rotary

Year 2021–2022. Colin has already emailed all

members with a reminder and a nomination

form, so do not be shy and step forward. Act

Belong Commit “ABC”. The search is also on

for an Incoming Club President.

Next Monday our guest speaker will be Julian

Pace, Founder of Happiness Co. and a national

and international key note speaker. See you

all then.

Yours in Rotary

Neil

Gillian introduces guest speaker Jo Smith, Artisitc Director,

CircusWA (see flyer on page 9)

CircusWA has a long history of working with disadvantaged

youth. One way they achieve this is by offering full or partial

scholarships to young people whose families can’t support them to follow their circus passions.

They hold classes for all ages and all abilities from 2+ years to professional performers. The basis of all

their classes is about the spirit of community, skill exploration, development and having fun. Circus is

made accessible for ALL. This is achieved through funded outreach programs to organisation who work

with children and youth at risk.

Elise Powell, RC Attadale’s RYPEN participant, reports on her intensive

residential weekend experience. It was an opportunity to develop "life

skills" and achieve increased confidence to help cope with the

challenges of a very competitive future.

Is it Oktoberfest? Hallowe’en?

Every year, RCA members support Hat Day to help Lift

the Lid on Mental Illness by donning hats and

donating to the Australian Rotary Health

To celebrate this milestone, Mike Greenslade, CEO of ShelterBox Australia has produced a coffee table-style photography book, featuring 200 pages of full colour images captured during his deployments. Sales of the book “2020 Vision – Eyes Wide Open in the Disaster Zone” will go towards disaster relief and help ShelterBox achieve our vision of a world where no family shelter following a disaster.

Books are $35

We need your help to sell all these books

Due to COVID 19, the Western Australian Launch of this inspirational book could not take place. There are 175 books for sale that showcase the amazing impact ShelterBox has on the lives of those in need. The books would make an excellent gift and only cost $35. If you, or your Club could buy some of these books for yourselves or to on sell, it would be much appreciated.
