IT takes a special confidence when you are 15 years old to aim for a win in your age group and in the open beach sprint final, but Coogee’s Jessica Thornton is a special type of talent.

After winning the under-17/open double at the NSW championships, the young flyer set her sights on emulating that achievement at The Aussies and yesterday her dream was realised.

She ran in lane nine in both races and in a few magical minutes at Scarborough secured the gold medal in the under-17 final, then backed up to beat City of Perth pair Gabrielle Murphy and Brittany Houghton in the open final.

“It feels pretty good,” she said after the open final.

“I don’t think it has really sunk in yet but I’m very happy.

“After state I thought I had the chance to win both but I wasn’t sure about the Queenslanders, and the Western Australians who proved very good, getting second and third.

“And I was very tired because of the heat but it worked. I wanted the double.”

You can mark down Jessica’s name as one to watch in future years as she not only continues her career on the sand but also aims to reach her ultimate goal of

competing at the Olympic Games.She is certainly on a fast track to that

goal, holding the fastest under-16 400m time in the world and being in line for selection in an elite contingent to go to the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China in August.

In the under-17 final, Thornton beat 2013 open champion Nicole Kay (Mooloolaba) and Kyla King (Cronulla).

Jackson Symonds of West Australian club Sorrento had the home crowd cheering when he ran from lane two to win a star-studded open men’s final.

He beat former open champion Dean Scarff (Collaroy) into second place and Kurrawa’s Ben Mispelhorn placed third.

Currumbin’s Ryan Bedford won the under-19 men’s final ahead of Jake O’Brien (Avoca Beach) and Adam Sciberras (Dicky Beach), while the under-19 women’s title went to Kaitlin Mott, of Helensburgh-Stanwell Park, ahead of Emily Carty (Mordialloc) and Tarnica Golisano (City of Perth).Mooloolaba’s Jason Gough took the boys’ under-17 gold medal, with Tim Delahunty (Currumbin) second and Hamish Lorang (Cooks Hill) third, while the under-15 titles went to Cody Rychvalsky (Maroochydore) and Olivia Fien (Currumbin).

IT WAS THE MOTHER OF ALL RACES

ONE year ago, just after she won the open women’s 2km run, Swansea-Belmont’s Angela Leadbeatter was emphatic that the best athlete hadn’t started the race.

“The great Alison O’Toole, if she had been here today I’m sure she would have won,” she said at Kirra.

Yesterday eight-time champion O’Toole was in the race but didn’t win after she and Leadbeatter staged a grinding battle that saw the NSW runner triumph in a thrilling sprint finish.

It marked the first time O’Toole had been

beaten in the 2km at The Aussies.“My mother heard me say that last year and

told me I should never say anything like that,” Leadbeatter said.

“She said ‘you only have to beat the people who are there on the day.”

The two mums – Leadbeatter, 37, has three children and O’Toole, 38, has two, the youngest just four months old – ran at the head of the field and when O’Toole tried to push to the front in sight of the finish, Leadbeatter was able to hold her off.

Erika Lori of North Cottesloe was third.Victorian club Inverloch has just one

athlete at The Aussies and Nick Leman will leave with his club’s first ever Aussies gold after an impressive win the open men’s beach run.

The 28-year-old former triathlete has targeted the race in the past two years and surprised even himself with his performance.

“I got ninth last year and 14th the year before, so to win is unbelievable,” he said.

“That’s the hardest race I’ve ever done, but I’m stoked to get our first Aussies gold.”

Trigg Island’s Mitchell Hoar placed second in the open men’s, with Wanda’s Ali Najem following up his win in the under-19 race with an open bronze medal.

Emma Jeffcoat of Dee Why successfully defended her under-19 title, ahead of Olivia Marsh (North Cottesloe) and Megan Domarecki (West Beach).

The under-17 titles went to defending champions Oliver Hoare (North Cronulla) and Jess Suriano (North Bondi), while in the under-15s the winners were Hamish Miller (Mount Maunganui) – with Dylan Foster of Alexandra Headland second and the first Australian home – and Jazmin Lewsam of Southport.

MELISSA HOWARD’S QUEST FOR A DECADE OF DOMINANCE MELISSA Howard arrived in Perth this week on a mission to create her own little slice of surf lifesaving history.

This afternoon the Scarborough Amphitheatre will be packed when Australia’s finest beach flags athletes are introduced to centre stage for one of the real highlights of these Championships.

Howard has a personal goal to become the first Australian female lifesaver to win 10 Aussies in the same event and to emulate her club mate Simon Harris who achieved the feat last year.

Our “On Beach Newspaper” team took time out with the Kurrawa flyer this week as she sat in an empty cauldron to talk about her quest for a record 10 straight Australian beach flags championships; how she handles the pressure; what her mum and dad said before she left and a photo that puts her in the zone.

“There is so much pressure in the lead up, in that week out and it is pressure I put on myself,” said Howard as she strolled through the sands that will tell her fate.

“It’s what I want, it’s all about what I want to achieve, but as soon as competition starts the pressure just all goes away, I just focus on the determination to get that last flag.

“To me it’s the ultimate dream; it always has been to get 10 flags titles…it has always been up there in the back on my mind, 10 titles… wow!

“A decade of being on top. It would be an amazing achievement.”

But her mum and dad have a different take on things.

“They are just like ‘go have fun, you’ve got nine, it doesn’t matter about 10, just go and have fun, just do it…you’ve achieved everything you set out to achieve’ but this is just my own personal goal.”

And what’s it like being in the Amphitheatre with no crowd?

“You can just picture all the faces and everyone that’s going to be here…being here when no one is here is still a great atmosphere,” says the diminutive flagger.

“You can come down and watch the beach; there doesn’t look like there’s a wave or anything in the water. It looks perfect. It actually looks like a beautiful day for a beachie to have a swim.

“When it’s packed there is a sense of craziness but once it starts there’s silence, pure silence, you don’t hear anything, everything is blocked out.

“All you are doing is listening for that whistle and focusing on that flag….you just want to get up and go.”Today’s Beach Flags Finals will start in the Amphitheatre from 2:30pm.

MONA VALE AND PALM BEACH CHASE SURF BOAT GLORYMONA Vale boaties already have a bag of gold medals in their luggage after winning the coveted Surf Boat Relay and they have continued their form into the rounds of the Open Men, Open Women and Under 19s with four crews qualifying for the final rounds.

Bryce Munro’s defending three-time open men’s champions Mona Vale Black have been joined in the top 16 by Matt Collins’ Mona Vale Green crew while the club will be represented in the women’s event by the Mona Vale Black crew and in the Under 19s by the Rude Dudes.

A full day’s competitive racing saw the closest of finishes and the photo finish cameras will be back working overtime in today’s money rounds.

Word from the boat area is that Bulli and the Currumbin Barbarians are relishing in the millpond conditions.

They will be joined by Austinmer, Alexandra Headland, Tannum Sands, Bronte, Lorne Rangers, Currumbin Barbarians, South Curl Curl White Stag, Bilgola Gold, Corrimal, Bondi, Palm Beach (NSW) and North Steyne.

The women’s top 16 will see six crews from the Sydney Northern Beaches - three Palm Beach (NSW) crews the Pelicans, the Pokopanos and Poseidon, joined by two crews from South Curl Curl, the Canned Heat and the Sapphires, and Bilgola Black.

Other crews are: North Cottesloe, Torquay, the Australian representatives Tugun Hunters, McMasters Beach, Elouera Wilko, Kurrawa Krankitz, Austinmer Blue, Helensburgh-Stanwell Park and the Lorne Rangers.

The Under 19s will see NSW crews Helensburgh-Stanwell Park, Broulee, South Narrabeen, Woonona, Newport, Queenscliff, Bulli and Mona Vale against two North Cottesloe crews and Alexandra Headland.

PALMY ARMY: Palm Beach has three women’s crews into tomorrow’s open women’s surf boat last 16.

BRONTE BREAKS SWIMMING DROUGHTIT had been a long time between successes for the Bronte Surf Life Saving Club that broke a long drought by winning the open men’s rescue tube rescue on Thursday.

Surf Life Saving Australia President and long-time Bronte member Graham Ford was among an excited group of onlookers who saw the team of Wally Eggleton, Andrew Bowden, Stephen Ford and Josh Higgins edge out Northcliffe in a thrilling finish.

City of Perth placed third.It took the judges five minutes to confirm

Bronte’s win.“We knew we were a good chance, we had

won at State,” Stephen Ford said.When asked about the tough final few

metres of the race where teams had to drag the patient up the steep bank to the finish line, Ford said: “It’s Gallipoli!”

Bronte has had plenty of success in board riding in recent years through the likes of Anthony Carroll, who won the malibu division on Wednesday, and in beach sprints where David Dworjanyn and Rebecca Irwin won multiple Aussies golds, but wins have been few and far between in swimming events.

Graham Ford speculated immediately after Thursday’s win that it had been “decades” since the club achieved a similar result and the record books back him up.

It looks like the great John Donohoe won the club’s last swimming gold when he won the under-18 surf race in 1956.

STEPPING UP: Nathan Smith on the way to victory in yesterdays restricted surf race.

SHANNON’S IRONMAN TITLE BOOSTSHANNON Eckstein’s pursuit of a record-equalling sixth National Ironman championship received an unexpected boost when the Northcliffe champion was drawn into the weaker of tomorrow’s two semi-finals.

The five-time Northcliffe champion and all his main rivals progressed comfortably through their quarter finals yesterday in flat conditions that reduced the chances of any upsets.

When the semi-final draw came out Eckstein managed to avoid most of the other title contenders, increasing his chances of winning tomorrow afternoon’s final and drawing level with his boyhood idol, Trevor Hendy, as the most successful Ironman in the 99-year history of the Australian championships.

While rising star Luke Cuff (Mooloolaba) and last year’s third placegetter in The Aussies Ironman final, Jackson Maynard (Currumbin), will race alongside Eckstein in the semi-final, the 16-man field will hardly cause the Northcliffe star any sleepless nights.

The first semi-final has produced a tougher draw with four-time champion Ky Hurst (Kurrawa), 2006 winner Nathan Smith (Manly) and Coolangatta Gold king Caine Eckstein (Northcliffe) up against Newport’s Kendrick Louis, Mooloolaba’s Matt Poole, last year’s runner-up Tanyn Lyndon (Northcliffe), as well as a handful of youngsters.

Smith, who made the move from Cronulla to Manly, gave his chances of more Ironman glory at age 33 a timely lift when he led all the way to win the restricted (over-24) surf race today, outrunning City of Perth’s Simon Huitenga and Eckstein after they reached the shore close together.

Smith will also be hunting the open surf race title today, a prize he has been unable to claim in more than a decade as one of the sport’s best swimmers.

“I’ve won this restricted surf race twice now but I’d give them both up to win the open surf,” he said.

But he will have to beat Ky Hurst who will be swimming for his 10th open surf race gold medal.

Meanwhile two-time and defending Ironwoman champion Courtney Hancock started her title defence in confident fashion in the opening round, easily qualifying for today’s semi-final.

Hancock and her Northcliffe clubmate and 2012 champion Rebecca Creedy raced alongside each other in their heat and were barely out of second gear as they led the field around the course, with Creedy crossing the line first.

The other heats were won by Jordan Mercer (Noosa Heads) and Brodie Moir (North Burleigh).

The rise of some of the younger competitors was one of the striking features of the Ironwoman heats, with four competitors – Georgia Miller (Manly), Emma Dick (Mermaid Beach), Alyssa Bull (Alexandra Headland) and Karlee Nurthen (Mooloolaba) – qualifying for the semi-finals of both the open and under-19 events.

The young guns will have to contest back-to-back semi-finals today as they bid to win places in tomorrow’s finals.

Hancock and Creedy both played major roles in Northcliffe winning the open women’s surf teams final, with Hancock swimming brilliantly to lead the field home.

Creedy placed fifth, Eliza Smith sixth and Kristyl Smith ninth to give the Northcliffe A team a clear victory over North Burleigh and City of Perth.

The Northcliffe juggernaut rolled relentlessly through the women’s surf teams races, with the club also winning the under-19 and under-17 finals.

SURF Life Saving Australia President Graham Ford, announced that Ralph Devlin QC has been appointed as the inaugural Deputy President of the national body at the Life Members dinner on Thursday.

Currently the President of Surf Life Saving Queensland, Mr Devlin said that it was an honour to serve the Surf Life Saving Australia Board as its first national Deputy President.

Mr Ford welcomed the creation of the new position which will address a wide range of issues and perform multiple duties throughout Australia.

“I look forward to working as a team with Ralph and I thank the SLSA Board for its wholehearted support,” Mr Ford said.
