BY MARILYN DEENCommunity contributor
Fresno — Cassidee Shepherd ofWest High School, and a mem-ber of Girl Scout Troop 360 inBakersfield, received the mostprestigious Girl Scout Gold
Award recently at a ceremony in Han-ford along with seven other girls fromGirl Scouts of Central CaliforniaSouth. These eight girls — who alsocame from Wasco, Clovis, Fresno,Madera and Visalia — joined 44 othergirls who have earned this awardsince 2009.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is thehighest award senior and ambassadorGirl Scouts may earn. Earning theGold Award requires many hours ofplanning and implementing a chal-lenging, large-scale project that isinnovative, engages others and has alasting impact on its targeted commu-nity, with an emphasis on sustainabili-ty.
Cassidee’s project, “Project PortPillow,” addressed the issue that can-cer patients face when they have aport surgically installed to receivecancer treatment. The seatbelt goesright over the port and causes a lot ofdiscomfort so she made 5-by-5 inchpillows to relieve the discomfort theseatbelts cause. Cassidee’s inventionwas such a big hit, she received callsfrom dialysis patients as well.

Parents eagerly anticipatethe moment when theirchild first begins to talk. But for some parents, it is atime of anxiety because
their child struggles to get wordsout. As many as 5 percent of pre-school children nationwide haverepetitions and prolongations ofsounds severe enough to be of con-cern to their parents.
The DVD “Stutter-ing and Your Child:Help for Parents,”helps parents detectstuttering and takeaction toward help-ing their child, andis available at mostpublic libraries. Some librarieshave an oldervideo format.
This DVD, inEnglish and Span-ish, has beenoffered to all thepublic libraries inthe county. Thefollowing libraries in Kern Countyhave received the free DVD andagreed to shelve them:
• Beale Memorial Library inBakersfield.
• Kern River Valley BranchLibrary in Lake Isabella.
• Ridgecrest Branch in Ridge-crest.
Produced by the nonprofit Stut-tering Foundation, the filmdescribes what kinds of stutteringyoung children may exhibit, howparents can help at home, and therole of a speech pathologist in eval-uating and treating children whostutter.
“Stuttering typically beginsbetween the ages of 2 and 5,” saidBarry Guitar, professor and chair-man of Communication Sciences atthe University of Vermont inBurlington. “It may begin gradual-ly or suddenly, and many of thesechildren outgrow their disfluenciesnaturally. However, if a child con-tinues to stutter for severalmonths, or appears to be frustratedby it, parents should seek assis-tance.”
Strategies parents can use to
help reduce stuttering are giventhroughout the DVD, and includereducing the number of questionsthey ask the child, focusing on tak-ing turns during conversations, andmaking time to read or talk withthe child in a relaxed manner.
"Parents are relieved to discoverthat they are not alone and thatother parents share their con-cerns," said speech pathologistKristin Chmela.
"Stuttering remains a mystery tomost people," said
Jane Fraser, presi-dent of the Stutter-ing Foundation."Watching a youngchild struggle tospeak can be devas-tating. This DVD isdesigned to reassureparents and familiesthat manypreschoolers stutter, that they can behelped, and how par-ents can play a vitalrole in this process."
Stuttering Aware-ness Week is the sec-ond week in May each
year. International StutteringAwareness Day is Oct. 22 eachyear. For more information go tostutteringhelp.org.
Seven tips for talking with your
child:
1. Speak with your child in anunhurried way, pausing frequently.
2. Reduce the number of ques-tions you ask your child.
3. Use your facial expressionsand other body language to conveyto your child that you are listeningto the content of her message andnot to how she's talking.
4. Set aside a few minutes at aregular time each day when youcan give your undivided attentionto your child.
5. Help all members of the fami-ly learn to take turns talking andlistening.
6. Observe the way you interactwith your child.
7. Above all, convey that youaccept your child as he is.
