Research suggests that mindfulness meditation may improve your mood, decrease stress, andboost your immune function. In addition it can assist in maintaining your calm inner awareness, provide
c; balance and clarity in the midst of any situation and gradually shift you to a heighten level oft consciousness as well as increase your clarity to see things as they truly are.. We are very pleased to have Dee Hiatt LMT from the Connecticut School of Massage as our guest

For your good health... by Margaret Balint R.N., B.C.
..
As we approach the first annual "Step to the Beat!" walkon April 4, 2009, I thought that we could review someinformation to make sure that your feet are up to the challengeas well as your heart.
Whether due to neglect or abuse, the normal wear andtear of the years causes changes in the feet. As persons age, their feet tend to spread and lose the fatty pads that cushionthe bottoms of the feet. Additional weight can affect the boneand ligament structures. Older people consequently shouldhave their feet measured for shoe sizes more frequently, rather than presuming that their shoe sizes remain constant.Dry skin and brittle nails are other conditions that older peopleface. Finally, it's a fact that women young and old, have fourtimes as many foot problems as men, and high heels are oftenthe culprit.
Here are Foot Health Tips as suggested by the AmericanPodiatric Medical Association, Inc.
. Make sure your shoes fit properly. Especially checkthe shoe width at the widest part of the foot, across theball of your foot.
. Purchase new shoes later in the day when feet tend tobe at their largest and replace worn out shoes as soonas possible.
. A shoe with a firm sole and soft upper is best for dailyactivities. For a walking shoe, make sure you getgood arch support.
. Alternate shoes - don't wear the same pair of shoesevery day.
. See that the top of the heel counter of the shoe (theback of the shoe) is properly cushioned and does notbite into the heel or touch the ankle bone.
. Pantyhose, stockings or socks should be of the correctsize and preferably free of seams.
. Don't ignore foot pain - it's not normal. If the painpersists, see a podiatrist.
. For those over 65 years old or with certain medicalconditions, see your podiatrist at least twice a year.
If you would like to register for the heart health walk,IlStep to the Beat!" please contact Greta Roberts atStratford Health Dept at 385-4090. Forms can bedownloaded from our website,www.townofstratford.com/health. If you have any other
,questions, you.can contact the Public Health Nurse at 385-4058.

From the Desk of the Mayor
Dear Friend,
Approximately 325,000 Americans suffer sudden cardiac arrest each year and more than95 percent of them die before reaching the hospital. If CPR and defibrillation (a shock to theheart) are not applied within 10 minutes after sudden cardiac arrest, there is virtually no chanceof survival. However, in communities where defibrillation is provided within five to sevenminutes, the survival rate from sudden cardiac arrest is as high as 49 percent.
Defibrillation is the singJe most effective treatment for cardiac arrest. According to theAmerican Red Cross, chances of survival increase from five to 74 percent by having an AED onsite nearby and accessible to the public.
On October 14, 2008 the Stratford Town Council passed my proposed ordinance requiringthat an Automatic External Defibrillator be located on premises in certain types ofestablishments including municipal buildings, health clubs, lodging establishments, retail storesand restaurants.
In March, we installed the first AED in Town Hall. I had the honor of installing the first AEDwith Becky Simon, a seventh grader at Wooster Middle School. Becky read an article in thenewspaper about my AED initiative and visited me' at one of my open door meetings almostthree years ago. As AED technology has special meaning for Becky and her family, she pledgedher support for this initiative. With the help of her family and friends, Becky raised $1,000 insupport of the AED initiative by making and selling "Becky's Bookmarks" for $1 each.
Getting to know Becky and her family is personally inspiring to me. As Mayor, I have seenthe future potential of our community and I believe, as Becky does, that we can accomplish somuch as a government, and as a community, with the involvement of our residents.

Sincerely,
d~Q.rn~James R. MironMayor
