Spring is in the air!

With spr ing comes cha-nge, the need

for spring-cleaning, or a new look perhaps. As the days get longer and the weather slowly warmer, Estonians come out of hibernation, so to speak. You will see smiles on our faces, and a spring in our step.

At the Baltic Guide, we have made a few changes ourselves. In the paper we have included more local content, meaning we are asking Tallinn locals what they like to do for entertainment, where they go to eat, where they go dancing, or their favourite museums.

We have also established more of an on-line pres-ence. Our website is constantly being updated with all the latest news about restaurant openings, art exhibit reviews, new clubs, new shops…well you get

the idea. To keep up to date with all of the latest, “like” us on Facebook, follow us Twitter, or check out our Instagram page.

In this month’s issue, we are celebrating spring early. Find out about spring events, like the upcoming home and garden show Interjöör. Our nightlife editor Maarja-Liisa Mahla has a guide to all things Tallinn Music Week, including which bands you just have to go and see.

What are you waiting for? Take the Baltic Guide and go explore this wonderful country.

Happy travels!

Viewing Platforms

Kohtu Platform - offers one of the best views of the Old Town. The impressive tower of the Niguliste Church seems at arms length. The red tiled roofs with white edges are cha-racteristic of Tallinn. Tallinn B1.

Patkul Platform - shows both a view of St Olaf’s Church, and part of the city wall. The church was even taller in medieval times and the tallest buil-ding in the world in its time. Nowhere else can you see the city wall from a better angle. Tallinn B1.

Kiriku Platform - the platform at the end of Kiriku Street faces west and offers a view of splendid and roman-

tic sunsets. Tallinn B1.

Raekoja plats

Tallinn’s Old Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) is Northern Europe’s best-preserved medieval town hall square and was built at the beginning of the 1400s.

Tallinn Old Town H 1-2.

Blink and you might miss this narrow passageway off of Vene. Built in 1246, St. Catherine's Monastery (Püha Katariina klooster) is the oldest buil-ding in Tallinn. This passageway is also known as the Latin Quarter of Tallinn, and where you can find one of Tallinn’s first Italian restaurants. Tallinn Old Town H 2-3.

The Town Hall Pharmacy (Raeapteek) is one of Europe's oldest pharmacies, which still operates in its original loca-tion, in the Town Hall Square. Tallinn Old Town H 1.

The Tall Hermann Tower (15th century) on the southwest corner of the hill, and the blue, black, and white Estonian flag signify independence and freedom for Estonians. Today, Toompea is the centre of Estonian government and the Rii-gikogu (parliament). Look for the pink building behind the Russian Orthodox Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral. Tallinn B1.

The Kiek in de Kök tower is the entrance to historical underground bastion tunnels. In Soviet times they were supposed to serve as bomb shelters and protect the communist elite in case of a war. Kiek in de Kök means, “look into the kitchen”

in Low German, as this was one of the main things soldiers spent their time doing while on the lookout for intruders. Kiek in de Kök dates back to the 15th century. The tower is 38 metres tall, and the walls are four metres thick.Komandandi tee 2, Tallinn B1.

Climb the stairs of the St Olaf Church and you will discover not only the lower town beneath but also the magnificent palaces facing the slopes of Toompea Hill, and the upper town. The old town of Tallinn is divided into a lower and upper part. The lower town was inhabi-ted by hanseatic traders and the upper town, or Toompea was inhabited by nobility. Lai 50, Tallinn Old Town E2.

A fascinating museum about Soviet his-tory in Estonia is located on the top floor of the Viru Hotel. The hotel rooms were under KGB surveillance. The rooms were equipped with micropho-nes, and small holes were made in the walls, where cameras could be placed to take pictures of hotel guests.

The museum is only accessible by gui-ded tour. Tours run daily and are held in English, Finnish, Russian, and Estonian. English tours book up quickly so boo-kings are recommended. Viru väljak 4, Tallinn B2.

Fat Margaret (Paks Margareeta) is the most important fortification tower in Tallinn. She was built in the early 1500s. The diameter of the tower is 25 metres and the walls are up to 6.5 metres thick! She was constructed to protect Tallinn from intruders from the sea. Fat Margaret is often the main entrance gate and first encounter for visitors to the Old Town in Tallinn, if arriving by sea. Sometimes you just don’t have enough time to see everything, but on the Tallinn City Tour you just might. Three lines run daily, and best of all, each one passes through the Port of Tallinn, making it even more convenient. The tour operates in ten different languages and is guide by a recorded audio track that follows the sequence of the sights. One ticket is valid for 24 hours. This means that you can travel on all three routes in one day. If you purchase a 24-hour Tallinn Card then your journey on the Tallinn City Tour is free.

A quick history of the city of Tallinn

Outside of the Old Town

Kalamaja (Fish house) is a historic suburb filled with wooden houses and old factories. From the 14th cen-tury, Kalamaja has served as Tallinn’s main fishing port and was home to fishermen and fishmongers. When the railroad connected Tallinn with St. Petersburg in 1870, many factories opened. The colourful wooden hous-es you still see today were built in the 1920s and 1930s to house the grow-ing working population. Kalamaja has seen a revival over the last few years as artists and other bohemian types moved in for the large spaces and cheap rent. Restaurants and cafés began to open, and the area con-tinues to grow .

Have you ever seen the hull of a real submarine from below? Or better still, crawled through the narrow liv-ing and working quarters of a fully refurbished sub from the 1930s? The submarine Lembit was one of two Estonian submarines built in the UK in the mid 1930s. Another sight is an authentic replica of the Short Admiralty Type 184 seaplane, a British two-seat reconnaissance, bombing, and torpedo carrying folding-wing seaplane used in the Estonian war of Independence in the early 1920s and later for mail service. The museum is located in the former seaplane hangars built during WWI

by the Russian tsar. The construc-tion is architecturally unique since it was the largest armoured concrete ceiling in the world at the time of construction.

Küti 17 / Vesilennuki 6, TallinnBy tram: No. 1 or 2 from the city cen-tre to the Linnahall stop. From there, by foot along the Cultural Kilometre trail.

Patarei Prison gives an eerie glimpse into gloomy Soviet era prison life. For a small entrance fee you can take a self-guided tour through the dark halls of this old sea fortress that has served as barracks, and then as a prison during Soviet times.

Kalaranna 2-2aBy tram: No. 1 or 2 from the city cen-tre to the Linnahall stop. From there, by foot along the Cultural Kilometre trail, just before the Seaplane Harbour.

Kadriorg Park is the area that houses the Presidential Palace (Presidendi kantselei) and the Kadriorg Palace (Kadrioru loss), and the KUMU Art Museum. (All located on Weizenbergi). Kadriorg means Catherine’s Valley in Estonian, and dates back to the 18th century. The park and the palace were built by Peter the Great, who apparently helped in its building. As was cus-tomary at the time, the main house was named after his wife. There are plenty of other things to see in this beautiful and prestigious park. From the Kadriorg Palace, head straight along the park trail to the Russalka monument, located at the shore of the Gulf of Finland. The famous Song Festival Grounds (Lauluväljak) are only a short walk from the park as well.

Pirita is an area located a short distance to the east of the city centre and offers a variety of things to see and do. Start by visiting the ruins of St Birgitta’s Convent ruins (Pirita klooster) whose colourful history dates back to the 15th century. A stroll through the ruins and the surrounds, including the small cemetery, is a moving reminder of the past. Its proximity to the Pirita River and the beach makes it perfect as part of a day excursion. The 2km long beach can attract up to 30,000 visitors a day in summer. Also located a short distance from the beach is the city’s Botanical Gardens (Botaanikaaed) and the famous Tallinn TV Tower (Teletorn), which is a must see as it not only pro-vides a number of interactive exhibits but also offers one of the best views of the city and the district. A starting point for information on these can be found at:

St Birgitta’s Convent ruins (Pirita klooster)-Kloostri tee 9, Tallinn

Tallinn TV Tower (Teletorn) - Kloostrimetsa tee 58A, Tallinn

Botanical Gardens (Botaanikaaed) - Kloostrimetsa tee 52, Tallinn.

Visitors can catch a glimpse of the Estonian countryside and village life from the past. The venue has a dis-tinctive rural atmosphere that includes various farm buildings as well as its own church, tavern, and schoolhouse. Several mills, a fire station, fishing net sheds, a dancing area, and a village swing add to the character of the place. Some of the country’s iconic windmills can also be seen. Various demonstrations, displays and interactive activities help bring the past to life and provide visitors with a fun and educational experience.

A good burger has good meat, fresh buns, and uses quality ingredients. It’s not to be over-cooked. The fries on the side are just as important. Are they crispy? And what about sauce? We asked local burger lovers where they go to satisfy their burger cravings. Here is what they told us.

■ Vesivärava GrillAbout 80 of the Tallinn locals we asked mentioned Vesivärava Grill. Why – well the burgers are grilled and enormous. Located right next to a café of the same name, Vesivärava Grill has nine

restau

mexican

■ Coffee Bar 10133It is about time that a really cool little café opened up in the Old Town, and Coffee Bar 10133 is just that! While the café is geared more as a takeaway coffee spot, there are a few seats, and some com-fortable cushions in the window. But what makes this place really cool (apart from the great coffee of course) is the record player in the corner and the awesome record collection the owners have. Come summer, the takeaway option will be very appeal-ing, as the park is just around the corner.Suurtüki 2, Tallinn Old Town A2.

■ Manna La RoosaManna La Roosa seems to be the new ‘it’ spot of Tallinn, and it’s clear as to why. Greek chef Nikolaos Stavrakakis, who has worked at Noma, runs the kitchen. Dinner at Manna La Roosa is a lovely experience. The service is fantastic, and the staff treats you like a regular, even on your first visit. The menu offers a good mix of both fish/seafood dishes and meat. The menu plays with seasonal ingredients, throwing in a few Estonian twists (like Vana Tallinn, and Estonian liqueur, in their pork belly dish) and Saku smoked cheese (ox tartar).Vana-Viru 15, Tallinn Old Town H3.

Müürivahe, in Tallinn’s Old Town is one of those seemingly hidden cobblestone streets that tourists seem to happen upon by accident. There are many cool little shops and cafés along Müürivahe and among them is the new Mexican restaurant Ancho.

Ancho is a welcome addition to Tallinn’s ethnic restaurant scene, one of the few offering Mexican food in town. While the décor may leave something to be desired, it’s no reason to pass up trying their filling tacos or burritos.

Tacos come with a choice of crispy or soft shell. They are not filled with minced meat either; the beef taco was filled with sav-oury shredded beef and accom-panied with cheddar cheese and guacamole. If you are looking for something spicy, try the stuffed jalapenos –the chillies are stuffed with melted cheese, battered and fried, and served with sour cream. Wash it all down with one of their Mexican beers, and be sure to save room for the lime flan. ■

This popular Saaremaa burger joint had a brief stint in Tallinn with a location near the Port. Tallinn locals were very enthusiastic about Dereku Burger, but now you have an excuse to go and visit them in Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa.Kuressaare Turg, Tallinna mnt 5 Kuressaare

Dereku Burger

The brains and some say the talent behind the popular Vesivärava Grill are going to open a new burger joint in Tallinn under the name Estonian Burger Factory. Location is yet to be determined, but we will keep you posted via Facebook and Twitter.

Opening soon: Estonian Burger Factory

■ R-18 Väike Resto Väike Resto is the latest addition to the Tallinn burger scene and offer a burger-only menu as well as pulled pork sandwich and chicken fillet

burger. For a restaurant that is located in Town Hall Square, the prices remain reasonable. Be sure to check the board for daily specials, which often include a burger with fries and sauce of your choice, otherwise, you have order each separately. Väike Resto scores bonus points for their house made mayon-naise (tarragon, mustard, chilli, or aioli) as well as guacamole, blue cheese cream, or BBQ sauce.

■ SuzaniTallinn foodies have praised this Middle Eastern restaurant for their sashlik (grilled meat on skewers). At Suzani they offer lamb, chicken, pork, salmon, and beef. The lulja kebab (minced lamb) comes served in flat bread with onions and adzhika sauce on the side. Order a little lozi sauce (smoky hot sauce) for some added heat. Portions are on the small side, but order a few things to share to try a little bit of everything.Gonsiori 10, Tallinn B2.

■ Bocca PescheriaTallinn has a new seafood restaurant, located inside the already popular Italian eatery Bocca. When I say small menu, I mean seven items. Dishes like Nasi Goreng (fried rice with chick-en, prawns, and mixed vege-tables) and Beef Kway Teow (flat rice noodles with sliced beef, bean sprouts, and chives) are served in gen-erous portions. I tried the Char Kway Teow, a dish similar to the Beef Kway Teow, but served with chicken and prawns. There was a substantial portion of both prawns and chicken in the dish, and the sauce was flavourful and spicy.

At The Street Wok, two chill-ies means spicy. I love spicy food, and the dishes are hot, even with-out the added chilli. The waiter suggested not adding any extra chilli, and he was right. If you do not like the heat, meals can be served mild as well. All dishes can be made vegetarian too, for 1 off the price.

The restaurant itself is quite small, and most cli-ents come for takeaway. There are a few tables for sitting, and in the summer, an outdoor patio.

Dishes range from 6,90 - 8,90, and at lunch, non-alco-holic drinks are included. ■

When you've seen all the must-see sights, it's time to discover Tallinn's

colourful nightlife. Tallinn native Maarja-Liisa Mahla tells you about the

best gigs, pubs, clubs, and lounges in town!

Everybody can find something to suit their taste and the pro-gramme does not only include music acts. There will be many TMW Talks (interviews and discussions about music), TMW Tastes (a restaurant festival for festival guests including special discounts) and TMW City Stage programme (free intimate con-certs in Tallinn’s various cafés, galleries, bookshops and other public places). A festival pass costs 45 (until 23rd March, later it’s 55) and grants free access to all concert venues during 27, 28 and 29 March.

Here is a list of some interest-ing local and international bands that will be performing at TMW:

■ LESLIE DA BASS (Estonia) – A very talented Estonian male artist who won two prizes at the Estonian Music Awards 2013 – best electronic album and best male act. He has released four studio albums and will definitely be one of the most interesting artists at the festival.

Kino Sõprus, 27,03, ticket 6

■ WINNY PUHH (Estonia) – A famous local metal/rock band that has gained worldwide popu-larity with their crazy costumes and painted faces (similar to Kiss).

Rock Cafe 29.03, ticket 10

■ ELEPHANTS FROM NEPTUNE (Estonia) – An alternative rock band that released their first studio album in 2012 and have been compared with Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters. They have performed in many big word famous festivals and in my opinion they are one of the cool-est local bands at TMW.

Rock Cafe 29.03, ticket 10

■ PÕHJA TALLINN (Estonia) – Põhja-Tallinn has been on the Estonian music scene since 2007 when their first single „Probleem“ came out. All their songs are in Estonian and their music classifies between hip-hop and rock. Estonian rap sounds really intresting with a beautiful woman vocalist Kerli Kivilaan.

Rock Cafe, 28.03, ticket 10

■ ELINA BORN (Estonia) - Elina gained her popularity from an „Estonian Idol“ show where she came in second place. Her singles have been on the radio

top lists and she is a rising tal-ent!

Rock Cafe, 28.03, ticket 10

■ UPPFADE (Latvia) – Uppfade is a DJ and music producer from Riga and has played in all the biggest festivals in Latvia. Now he and his mate are working on an electronic project “Uppfade & Crown“ which should come out in 2014. Very inter-esting and unique electronic music.

Hetk, 27.03, ticket 5

■ FINGALICK (Lithuania) – Fingalick aka Tomas Narkevičius connects two very different sides of himself – an inspiring vocalist and a crazy dance floor DJ. His music ranges from cosmic Neo-Soul and R&B, evolving into Post-Dubstep and mind-blowingly deep dance music.

Kultuurikatel III stage, 28.03, ticket 8

■ GRACIAS & THE GLOBE BAND (Finland) – Deogracias Masomi is a rapper from Helsinki

Tallinn lacks a central shopping street like many other European capitals. If you haven’t explored Tallinn’s Old Town yet, there are many boutiques and high end shops that await the fashionista around every corner.

The area between Pärnu mnt and Harju is where you will find high-end brands like Burberry, Emporio Armani, Jacadi, Mar-ina Rinaldi, and others. If you are looking for something uniquely Estonian, Estonian designed, or simply shops you can’t find any-where else, we’ve compiled a list for you, to help you find just what you are looking for, or at least some pointers for a self-guided shopping tour of the Old Town. ■

Centrally located Solaris can be found across the street from the Estonia Theatre. The entertain-ment does not stop there, the Nokia Concert Hall is attached to the back of Solaris. This is where some of the biggest acts come to play, when in Tallinn. Inside the shopping centre you will also find a cinema (most films are screened in English or with English subtitles) and the large bookstore Apollo (with a good selection of books in Eng-lish), both located on the second floor.

Most of the restaurants and cafés are located on the second floor, including Lido, Vapiano, Hesburger, and Sushi House.

Spring is in the air! With the short winter Estonia has experienced, it’s not too early to celebrate the arrival of spring.

When spring arrives, so do the adorable newborn animals at Tallinn Zoo. Tallinn Zoo has the best collection of mountain goats and sheep in the world, as well as a stunning number of eagles, vultures, owl, and crane species. Many of the births happen in April, including the goats and

camels, which are among the first to have babies. The crepuscular leopards can usually be seen romping around their enclosures in the early morning and late afternoon, and can be followed live on the web. In fact, many of the animals at the Tallinn Zoo can be watched via webcam.

Traditional Dance Day - 5 MarchMarch 5 will mark 80 years since the birth of Kristjan Torop – an Estonian folklorist, folk dance collector, researcher and teacher, and the first Artistic Director of the folklore ensemble Leigarid. In celebration of this occasion, Leigarid are organising a full day of traditional dancing at the Estonian Open Air Museum. The day will finish with a Long Dance Night at Kolu Inn. To register, please email [email protected]

International Women’s Day – 25 MarchWomen’s Day on March 25 is a widely celebrated holiday in Estonia. Traditionally, by 25 March women had to have finished their handicrafts. Afterwards they would wear white, go to the pub and drink red drinks. Women’s Day also marked the beginning of spring.

The Estonian Open Air Museum will celebrate International Women’s Day with big pancakes and red drink.

Already in its 17th year, the home and interior design show Interjöör offers visitors information about current and future trends in furnishings, interior decorating, and design ideas, as well as inspiration for your home, cottage, or office décor. The show will include interesting project and design demos.

At the same time, the garden show

This unique facial procedure is the only one of its kind in Tallinn. Three different masks, one of which contains 24-karat gold dust, along with a massage and a concen-trated oxygen cream, ensures divine relaxa-tion and skin care.

■ Step 1 – Lymphatic drainage. This may sound scary, but it is simply a gentle massage that encourages natural drainage of built up fluids in your face.

■ Step 2 – Cleansing. The Balance facial cleanser contains goji berry extract, rich in antioxidants and vitamin A.

■ Step 3 – Cinnamon mask. Think of those cinnamon heart candies, but in mask form. This mask has a warming effect on the skin.

■ Step 4 – Oxygen mask. Once the Cinnamon Mask has been peeled off, your skin feels warm, but it is actually cool to the touch.

This mask is applied right away, and due to the warming effect of the previous mask, the sensation of thousands of tiny bubbles swimming on your skin is fantastic.

■ Step 5 – Oxygen concentrate.

■ Step 6 – Massage.

■ Step 7 – Peel-off Casmara Gold Mask. This mask contains 24-karat gold dust,

which nourishes and revitalises, and enhances skin’s luminosity. It is applied over both the eyes and mouth.

■ Step 8 – Once the mask has been peeled off, the final cream is applied and you are done! Your skin feels moisturised and soft, and your complexion is glowing. ■

There have been books written about the sinking of the Titanic, along with films, and the tale has been spoken about more than any other similar event. The exhibit is made up of facts, which are in and of them interesting and need no embellishing. This trage-dy still leaves people speechless, even after one hundred years.

The exhibit begins with a gli-mpse of the era, and the techno-logical developments that inspired

the ship’s creati-on. During this time, the biggest and fastest machines were being built. The Titanic was tal-ked about around the globe. The luxury liner symbolised limitless possibilities.

From there, you move inside the ship to the first class suites, and the less comfortable third

class rooms. The biographies of passengers are also dis-cussed. The journey ended when the ship collided with an iceberg, and after three

hours sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. It was not

found again until 1985.The exhibit also talks about the

search and discovery of the wreck. Each entry pass to the exhibit has a brief description of a person on board, which you can research further to discover your fate, had you been aboard.

After the exhibit, you can taste parts of the first class menu of the Titanic. On offer are potato salad, chicken or lamb, as well as a Wal-dorf pudding for dessert. These dishes were offered on board the Titanic on its last night. ■

TEXT JUKKA ARPONEN

History buffs will enjoy the benefits of the Tallinn Card. It offers free entrance to many museums, as well as free transport between

museums with city transport or the Tallinn Tour Hop On Hop Off bus. With both of these buses, you will be able to move eas-ily from the city centre to the Open Air Museum, as well as other places like the TV Tower or the Tallinn Zoo, located a little ways out of town, also included in the Tallinn Card package.

The Tallinn Card offers free entrance to all museums in the city. Of course, you won’t make it to all of them in two days, even if you did nothing but visit museums all day long! Tallinn’s museums offer art, design, history, people, science, maritime history, war history, and Soviet nostalgia. There is no doubt a museum for every taste! ■
