PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
And kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And you will renew the face of the earth.
Lord,
by the light of the Holy Spirit
you have taught the hearts of your faithful.
In the same Spirit
help us to relish what is right
and always rejoice in your consolation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
About the Prayer to the Holy Spirit
There are very few prayers to God as the Holy Spirit. This prayer
was developed from the Pentecost liturgy. The first two lines are the
verses sung with the Alleluia before the Gospel on Pentecost. The third
and fourth lines are a quote from the Latin translation of Psalm 104,
verse 30. It was part of a chant written for Pentecost. The rest of the
prayer, which follows “Let us pray” (when it is prayed publicly), is
adapted from the former opening prayer of the feast. The feast of Pente-
cost now has a new opening prayer. The former prayer is the opening
prayer for a Mass of the Holy Spirit such as might be celebrated at the
opening of a school year.
This prayer is a good example of how a popular prayer to the Holy
Spirit came to be composed by the faithful, using verses they heard sung
and prayed at the Pentecost liturgy.
The Holy Spirit
In art the Holy Spirit is often depicted as a dove. This is probably
because in the New Testament we first meet the Holy Spirit at the
baptism of Jesus. Some of the passages that depict the Holy Spirit as
a dove include the following:
. . . and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove [and]
coming upon him. (Matthew 3:16)
. . . and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. (Mark 1:10)
. . . and the holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like
dove. (Luke 3:22)

Resuming Mass during the Pandemic
St Matthias Parish will begin having Mass open to the public on June 1, for daily Mass, 8am at St Ann and
9am for St Hugh, as we start back to a normal schedule. By the time we get to the first weekend of June
we feel we will be ready to open the churches of Greene County and St Matthias Parish to a regular
Sunday Mass schedule using all the precautions that have been laid out by the diocese and the state.
People will have to:
• wear masks,
• use hand sanitizer on entering and exiting the church,
• keep social distancing (which will force us to only about 1/3 capacity of our churches, by closing
every other pew),
• during the whole liturgy people will be asked to stay in their pews with little interaction with others,
until communion is distributed after the final blessing,
• then people are to leave the church immediately, not congregating or socializing after Mass.
• Between each Mass we are asked to wipe down the pews and other areas of the church that are
normal areas of touch. No Eucharistic ministers or readers will be used at this time. We are trying to
do all we can for the safety of our parishioners and yet maintain a faithful respect for the Eucharist
and the people.
During this time there is no obligation for you to come to Mass! If you are sick or your health is
compromised in any way you should stay home please, for your health and that of the community
of faith.
May God bless you during these strange times.
As your pastor I apologize for the confusion over this past Sundays Masses being open at St Hugh
without the diocese permitting and without any real notice to our people. We are committed to keep-
ing within the guidelines laid out by the diocese and hope that those who can will join us on our
opening weekend of June 6-7. If church were to fill up, we will not let more enter the church than is
safe according to the guidelines. Please bear with us during these unusual circumstances.
Pray all ways, pray always,
Fr Al McGinnis
Post Script: We hope to go back to our normal weekday schedule times and places soon, hopefully next week.

FAITH LIFE
Dear St. Matthias Parishioners: Megan McKenna was scheduled to give a Parish Mission for us in March
of this year before the Coronavirus outbreak. You are invited to enjoy her online presentation.

Repairing One’s Soul …Repairing the World, by Megan McKenna, Ph.D.
Via the technology of Zoom, Dr. Megan McKenna, renowned theologian, storyteller, and prolific author, will bring her breadth of vision and world-wide experiences with Indigenous peoples to bear on the topic of Tikkum Olam, a Jewish concept which involves repairing one’s soul, as well as repairing the world on Tuesday, June 16 at 7 PM.
Drawing upon her recent work in Northwestern Canada, Manitoba and in the Arctic Circle with First Nations, Dr. McKenna will extend the concept of Tikkum Olam to include restorative justice, at-one-ment, forgiveness, and reconciliation, and thereby convey to us “what it looks like to undo harm done, and move towards resurrection life now.”
As Daniel Berrigan, S.J. once put it when praising her book And Morning Came: “Shall we proclaim Resurrection, even as creation is threatened with going under? Yes...birth, rebirth wins out over death. Thank you, Megan.”
Join us as Dr. McKenna challenges us, in her clear and fiery manner, to listen more deeply to Scripture, our own experiences, and God’s messages from one another.
McKenna, Megan, Ph.D., is a renowned Catholic theologian, internationally recognized storyteller, and author of more than 50 books, one of which –This Will Be Remembered of Her: Stories of Women Reshaping the World – won a Catholic Press Award. She was named Ambassador for Peace for Pax Christi in 2002. Dr. McKenna resides in Albuquerque where she works with Indigenous groups.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH Feast Day — June 1st
O Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church to you we recommend ourselves and the entire Church. Guide and assist our Holy Father and our Bishops in their apostolic mission, and aid all who help them in their work.
Mother of the Church! Enlighten the People of God along the paths of faith, hope and love! You were given to us as a mother by your Divine Son at the moment of his redeeming death. Remember us your children, support our prayers to God. Preserve our Faith, strengthen our Hope, increase our Charity.
Immaculate Heart! Help us to conquer the menace of evil,
which so easily takes root in the hearts of the people of today.
From nuclear war, from incalculable self-destruction, and from every kind of war, deliver us. From sins against human life from its very beginning, deliver us. From every kind of injustice in the life of society, deliver us. From readiness to trample on the commandments of God, deliver us. From attempts to stifle the very truth of God, deliver us. From the loss of awareness of good and evil, deliver us. From sins against the Holy Spirit, deliver us.
O Mary, conceived without sin, we who are gathered here today place ourselves under your special protection. We resolve to walk in your footsteps and to imitate your virtues. Obtain for us, O tender Mother, the grace of being faithful to this promise.
Amen.
