SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION
As I began to reflect on the past year and the challenges we have faced in our return to in-person mass participa-
tion, I couldn’t help but recall my childhood routines of attending mass at my Catholic grade school. These include belting out my favorite hymns – my favorite being Children of God in One Family, squeezing my friend’s hands extra tight during the Lord’s prayer, and the best part of the routine – dousing my right hand in holy water upon entering the church.
Whether you have been attending mass in person or via livestream, chances are you have not gotten to bless
yourself with holy water. Why did we use to do this anyway? It is a reminder of our Baptism – our identity. When we bless ourselves with holy water, we can think of the “holy trinity” to understand the purpose behind this practice and tradition within the church.
We are children of God. We have been redeemed by the cross. We have been washed clean of sin and purified by the Blood of the Lamb. I learned about this the hard way in second grade when my fellow classmates and I
decided it would be funny to use watercolor paints to baptize each other as the art teacher, Sister Paula, left the classroom. When she returned, our frog painting activity quickly pivoted into a Theology lesson.
This Theology lesson came back to me, a whole 15 years later, as I read this Sun-
day’s readings. The readings for the Baptism of the Lord remind us of two very im-portant life messages: our identity and our mission – both of which were at the heart of the theology skewed art lesson mentioned above. The concept of identity was outlined above. While identity is important, Sister Paula was sure to highlight our mission- the mission we are all responsible for carrying. This includes experiencing the presence of God within us and living as the children of God.
I can still remember Sister Paula’s words, “You kids would want the Heavenly Fa-
ther to say what he said to Jesus: ‘You are My beloved son/daughter with whom I am well pleased.’” She was quick to reiterate her main point once again in saying, “The Heavenly Father would still call you his beloved son/daughter, but he is not well pleased with your behavior today”.
As a Church we share the same mission and primary connection with Christ – we
are all brothers and sisters of Christ! As we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, may we remember the true
meaning of Baptism, commemorate the missed occurrences of blessing ourselves with Holy Water within this past year, and renew our Baptismal promises.
