B | BLO’S 2018/19 SEASON
The dissenters and rebels of BLO’s 2018/19 Season take us on a journey of the indefatigable human spirit to perseverance and love. Art can provide a mirror, sometimes uncomfortable, that reflects not only our deepest fears but also our capacity for greatness. The 2018/19 Season is full of such stories, both challenging and inspiring: the 200-year-old comedic, insightful classic, The Barber of Seville; the 2,500-year-old Roman story that provides the source for Britten’s opera, The Rape of Lucretia; a World Premiere opera, Schoenberg in Hollywood, from one of today’s leading composers which reflects on a recent and real terror; and finally, the dark, dystopian vision at the heart of Margaret Atwood’s prescient novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, which comes to life through Ruders’ powerful score. These are works that can connect us emotionally to the nobler desires that we all share, regardless of gender, creed, race, or nationality.
Such is the power of good art: Art can be a unifier and a source of hope. Those of us who produce, create, and participate in works of art are also charged to foster community, to open up conversation and dialogue, and to lift up one another’s voices—whether we are speaking out against injustice or singing a song of celebration and joy.
I hope you find our Season and our wonderful artists inspiring.

The brilliant composer Arnold Schoenberg fled the darkness and despair of Hitler’s Europe and found himself in 1930s Hollywood—a bold, new world of golden sunshine and camera-ready beauty. Can he find a way to reconcile reflection with action, and tradition with revolution? What is the meaning of art in the wake of atrocity?
In this World Premiere from BLO’s New Works Initiative, internationally-acclaimed composer Tod Machover, based in Boston, along with librettist Simon Robson, explores a great artist’s personal struggle, finding humor, heroism, and—ultimately—hope.

Unflinching and haunting, The Rape of Lucretia explores the devastating impact of a single act of violence—forever altering an individual, a family, a community, and a society. Britten’s heartbreaking and lyrical 20th-century chamber opera resonates as an ancient yet relevant story, illuminating compelling and complex emotions today.

Bear witness to the story of Offred: one woman of many stripped of her name, identity, and personhood by a cruel and oppressive government regime. Offred desperately preserves her story, a simple act of defiance and resistance as dangerous as it is riveting. Margaret Atwood’s extraordinary, important novel—set in Boston and Cambridge—becomes one of BLO’s largest-ever productions, directed by theater icon Anne Bogart with a hypnotic, evocative score that bends the tenets of traditional opera and leaves audiences breathless.
