In this issue of The Bark, you will find an update for all the work that occurred over the
summer and what we are planning for this fall.
As we enter the fall, it is a time for reflection and renewal. In this issue of The Bark,
you will find the times and locations surrounding our High Holy Day events. We are
still looking for volunteers to participate in the service as readers, shofar blowers,
singers and more. If you are interested and available, please contact Dawn Bachman
While I am most excited about the Holy Days, I am also very excited for the
conclusion ceremony for our Project 613 Torah Restoration. You will find an update
from our Co-Chairs Jodi and Rick Prohofsky. Project 613 has been a project of love
as we prepare to bring our Torah to NWA. We have met a member of the Florida
Congregation that was the previous home for this Torah that was honored to learn
that we would provide a loving home for the Torah; we provided the opportunity for
over 50 people to fulfill the 613th Commandment and write in the Torah; and we had
the opportunity to bring the Community together to share and learn about the
meaning and importance of the Torah to Jews and Judiasm. Thank you to our many
donors to support P613 and join us at this conclusion on September 18th. Toda Raba
to Jodi and Rick for all of their dedication and hard work over the past 18 months.
We have so many dedicated volunteers that make Congregation Etz Chaim the
warm, welcoming, caring and educational place that it is. Thank you for your
participation. You are very special to us. I offer a big Mazel Tov to Helene Carter on
her receiving the Tikkun Olam award at the Tikkun Olam awards at the end of
Septmeber.
The Rabbi Search Committee continues to define the needs of our Congregation as
we have had visiting rabbis this spring and summer and heard your feedback from
your completed surveys. We are working with several Rabbinic Colleges and
placement services to continue to identify candidates that are interested in serving
our community to meet our needs. As suitable candidates are interviewed, we will
continue to bring them to NWA to get to know our CEC family.
Over the summer, we have spent time planning and launching our participation in the
Life and Legacy Program sponsored by JFAR in partnership with the Harry Grinspoon
Foundation. We have had four families make legacy gifts to Congregation Etz Chaim
to ensure we are here for generations to come. In this issue, you will find out how you
can plan your legacy gift, making a lasting impact to support out Congregation.
I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event or at our upcoming High Holiday
services. I wish you and your family a happy, healthy, and sweet New Year.

he has continued to work with smaller Jewish congregations,
including visiting Congregation Etz Chaim earlier this spring.
High Holiday Schedule
All services will take place at Waterway 4074 SW H Street, unless otherwise stated. Childcare

As with most things, in my life, I’ve been greatly influenced by my own mother’s experienc-
es before, during, and after the Holocaust.
My parents instilled in me that I’m Jewish in both thought and deed. During this time of
great uncertainty in our world, not unlike the events that have surfaced with the deaths of
the last Holocaust survivors, Judaism must live on through our children.
For me this includes Torah study, religious training, giving to those who have no one to
speak for them, social justice, and acceptance of all races and lifestyles. Memories of how
our people have suffered throughout countless generations should not simply be forgotten
or pushed aside through assimilation.
Dwelling in the past will not help our future generations live on. Though we cannot shut the
door on our past we must always remember from whence we came.

Congregation Etz Chaim partners with the
Jewish Federation of Arkansas to participate
in the Harold Grinspoon Foundation LIFE &
LEGACYTM Program
What is LIFE & LEGACY?
LIFE & LEGACY is a partnership of the
Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF), the
Jewish Federation of Arkansas, and the
following Arkansas Jewish congregations:
• Congregation Etz Chaim (Bentonville)
• Congregation Agudath Achim (Little Rock)
• Congregation B’nai Israel (Little Rock)
• Congregation House of Israel (Hot
Springs)
• Temple Shalom of NWA (Fayetteville)
The program promotes after-lifetime giving
to benefit the above organizations.
Through training, support, and monetary
incentives, LIFE & LEGACY motivates
Jewish organizations to integrate legacy
giving into the philanthropic culture of the
Arkansas Jewish community.
Why participate?
Your life is rooted in Jewish experiences
connecting you to the Arkansas Jewish
community. Chances are you already
support multiple Jewish congregations and
organizations in Arkansas, but have you
included them in your after-lifetime giving?
By leaving a legacy, you can assure that the
traditions and institutions that mean so
much to you today will exist for future
generations.
By making your legacy commitment now, or
sharing with the community that you have
already done so, you will help each
organization to which you commit to receive
up to $10,000 in incentive grant funding
from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
How do I participate?
All of us, regardless of age, wealth, or
affiliation have the ability to leave a legacy.
Your legacy gift of any size can be
customized and structured to fit your
dreams, lifestyle, family, and financial
needs.
Some options include:
• Bequest in a Will
• Gift of Life Insurance
• Gift of IRA or Pension Funds
• Gift of Cash or Assets
• Charitable Gift Annuity
• Charitable Remainder Trust
A professional advisor or a legacy team
member of any of the participating
organizations can help you determine which
method of giving is best for you.
Legacy gifts can also easily be divided
among all the organizations meaningful to
you. Once you have made your commitment
(or if you already have), please return the
form on the next page to CEC.
Questions? Please contact Ryan Malashock
([email protected] or 479-871-1843); he
can also put you in touch with
representatives from the Jewish Federation
of Arkansas. Visit www.etzchaimnwa.org/
lifelegacy for more information.

Shalom everyone!
I am excited to lead the Congregation Etz Chaim community as
Religious School Director for the 2016-2017 school year. I look
forward to another fantastic school year educating our children
about Judaism, Israel, and Hebrew!
This year marks our 11th year of Religious School at Congregation
Etz Chaim. The goal of our program is to provide a strong foundation upon which our
children can grow into mature and knowledgeable Jewish citizens.
Religious school will continue to be located at First Christian Church (807 SE
14th St, Bentonville), from 10 am to noon. Families, please join us for Hatikvah, a fun
song, and announcements right at 10. We’ll again form a carpool line at noon in the
back of the church for pick-up.
Torah Tots will continue this year for 3- and 4-year-olds. Classes will be held
monthly, beginning at 10:15 (after announcements). Younger siblings are welcome.
In addition to Sunday Religious School, beginning in 5th grade, we will continue with
our Wednesday Hebrew program that is devoted entirely to Hebrew
studies. Students will continue in the Wednesday Hebrew program right up until the
time of Bar/Bat Mitzvah. It will meet on Wednesdays from 6-7:15 pm at Bob
Myerson’s home in North Bentonville.
For those young adults and young at heart who would like to participate in
discussions around current events and Israel from a Jewish perspective, we will hold
biweekly discussions following the Wednesday Hebrew program at Bob Myerson’s
home from 7:15-8:30 pm.
Similar to the past, we will have a parent (“Mensch of the Week”) each week to
assist with snack. Parents will not be required to stay for the whole class but will need
to set up the snack table when they arrive at the beginning of school. I will send out
the parent schedule before school begins.
Please complete the registrations forms online at www.etzchaimnwa.org/forms/rs-
registration-form.html or print them and mail to: Helene Carter, 12 Fiddlesticks Trail,
Rogers, AR 72758
Thank you,
Helene

I’m very excited to take the reins as Sisterhood chair this year! I look forward to con-
tinuing all the great work Sisterhood has always undertaken (onegs, Holocaust Con-
ference, etc.), growing other activities (Miracle on 14th Street, the Brown Baggin’ It
program) and adding more socializing opportunities (monthly lunches, regular dinner
& movie nights, etc.). We are also partnering with other congregations for an Inter-
faith Book Club that begins Sept. 6. For more info email me at

Greetings friends- I had the honor of representing Congregation
Etz Chaim at the ISJL conference in Jackson, and I wanted to
share a little about my experience. It was an amazing few days
full of Jewish education. I arrived to find Stanley from Temple
Shalom (perhaps we should have car-pooled), Rabbi Kramer
from Montgomery, Alabama (a longtime family friend), and
Rabbi Dr. Shire (one of my professors from Hebrew College). It
was a lovely time visiting with old friends and making lots of
new ones. The highlight of my trip was stopping by Jacobs
Camp on the way home and have lunch with Rachel Carter,
and briefly see Luke Branham and Rachel Moline.
My favorite class I attended at the conference was with Rabbi Shire, he taught a class
called “Torah G-dly Play,” and it was amazing. It will be lots of fun for our Torah Tots
and older kids as well. It is a very methodical and slow Torah story telling. The story
teller uses simple, natural props for storied ranging from Torah to Midrash. We adults
were captivated and I can’t wait to get the scripts and share with Helene. You can
watch a clip of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4P35ugwnG8 please
watch and give me feedback. (My professor is the one with the British accent)
Another great class I had, was with Big Tent Judaism. It was about growing our
communities and connecting with those people who may not feel a connection or are
scared to be engaged in the Jewish community. The largest divided in the Jewish
community is people who are engaged with the Jewish community and people who
are unengaged so how do we get these people engaged. One of the largest groups of
those people are intermarriage families. Maybe I’ll get to have an adult education
opportunity and share some of the things I learned about connecting with this
population and share the statistics. If you are willing to help Rabbi Olitzky’s research
on how Jews connect with Judaism in small areas, please take this short survey
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BTJSurvey
I also had a great time learning about ways to engage post b’nai mitzvah students,
that I will meet with Dawn and Helene and share my ideas. Also Rachel Stern share
her ideas about FitBris copied from FitBit to engage our children and make them have
some accountability in their Jewish education. I am excited about the next year of
Religious School and Hope I can utilize what I have learned. I volunteer to go back to
the conference next year.
L’Shalom,
Jason Dowd

Yes, you read correctly...The Project 613 Torah is
coming home to Northwest Arkansas. It's been 18
months since we have been matched with this very
special Torah originally from the Czech Republic and
that survived the Holocaust. We have had portions
of the Torah visit us three times over the course of
the project. More than 60 people have written a
letter.
The Torah has been restored. The Torah cover is
pressed. The Torah Breast Plate is polished. The
Yad has had its chain repaired. And, now it is time
for us to marry the Torah to Congregation Etz Chaim
so that it can officially be part of the family.
So...mark your calendars. Congregation Etz Chaim
is hosting this wedding on Sunday, September 18.
The event will be from noon to 2:00 pm at the
Doubletree in Bentonville (301 South Walton
Boulevard). Tickets ($36 per person which includes
lunch) for the event can be purchased at
www.etzchaimnwa.org/event/p613. Tickets to this
event and all donations are tax deductible.
There will be one more writing event for anyone who
wishes to write a letter with the Sofer on Site. This is
also scheduled for September 18 from 10:00am to
11:45am. If you are interested in writing or in a sponsorship opportunity please visit
us at http://www.etzchaimnwa.org/p613event.html.
We look forward to you joining us for this fun and historic event, which will also
include community speakers and a silent auction. We have already had many
generous donations submitted for the silent auction. There is something for everyone!
However, there is room for more items so if you have something that you would like
to donate please contact Jodi Prohofsky at [email protected].
See you on September 18!
