War Mutt

“Wake up, Mutt,” shouted a deep, disciplined voice. I was well trained, and already awake. I jumped up, ready for action. My trainer, Captain Trayner was standing in the doorway. Yes, he’s got that name and he’s the trainer for a secret military project, A.K.A., me. I was ready to train. “Let’s go,” he growled. Captain Traynor wasn’t the nicest person, but either way, I’m trained not to love any human, but recognize which is which-humans who are with America and the enemy. When we finally got to the training grounds I decided that humans are super slow, so I decided to walk to my station. We went through the flaming obstacle course, jumped some hurdles while trying to run at 60 miles per hour, then practiced dodging bullets being shot at you. No biggie. Then, I tried to fire a gun- it didn’t work out. Captain Traynor ended up with a hole in his hat, and an expression on his face that I’ll get for a week, but it was worth it. In case you haven’t gathered who I am yet, here we go. I am a well-trained mutt dog who was chosen to be part of a secret project in the U.S. Military. So, also, my name is Mutt. We are in the middle of a war with Europe,

again in the year 2082. The last “King”, of England had taken over the other countries, even our allies, in Europe by capturing their leaders. The next day I was awakened by guns. I remembered my training, grabbed my gear and bolted to Captain Traynor’s room. Unfortunately , I found him shot dead in the corner. A British soldier walked in, and blocked me from exiting. I saw Captain Traynor’s gun in his hand and knew he killed him. I growled deep in my throat, jumped up, and pinned the man to the ground, knocking the gun from his hand. I snarled and bit him right on the neck killing him. By now, more of them were coming. I wanted to howl for my loss but I knew I would give away my position. I knew I had to get to the General and protect him. I bolted. Soon, I saw him, the soldier chaining him to his chair saw me. He tied one knot, then grabbed me by the skin on my back. All I did was snarl. Then, I poked his back with my tail and when he turned, I grabbed his gun and fired. Yes! I didn’t miss. “Dictator Schlobnock is outside with the army,” said the General as I tore off his chains. We ran out. I made a place for the General to stay safely, but he refused. “I’ve promised to fight for my rights,” he simply said. I barked and growled and snarled as I saw Dictator Schlobnok who is the Dictator of Europe. I pushed the General to safety, and leaped at the unarmed dictator. Schlobnok screamed as I sank my teeth into his throat. He cursed in his own language, and breathed heavily as I squeezed tighter. As he breathed his last breath, his soldiers, British and not, bowed and gathered around me. I laid down the body, pointed my nose as up a I could, and howled. I don’t know what emotions I was feeling that day, sadness, pride, happiness, all of them probably. I had saved America from dictatorship. I had lost ones I slightly loved and killed a king and some soldiers. I soon fainted as the last howl released my emotions. I was finally, and completely, a free American mutt and a War Mutt.

Guinea Pigs

I have a guinea pig, so lively and fat I named it Thumble and it sat in my lap

And one day in April my guinea pig oinked And then it fell down with a big boink

My guinea pig is round and well…quite jolly And it will always hate the smell of sweet holly

Thumble loves food and Sometimes not in the mood

But she won’t always be too crude Her fur is light brown, dark brown, and white

And hopefully she isn’t too uptight

The Magic Mirror

One Saturday afternoon a family was walking in the park. They saw chipmunks, squirrels, and robins but no people. All of a sudden an old wrinkly woman walked up to them. She handed them an old antique mirror. They ran to their car as fast as lightning. When they got home they looked in the mirror and saw their house in it. Their house didn’t look like it did in real life. It had cobwebs in the corners and a ghost roaming around. The family literally jumped out of their pants. A week later they started having bad luck. Their car broke down and the kids were getting D’s in school. They were in total shock when they found out about having to move. Their dad got transferred to Denver, Colorado. Two weeks later the woman came to their house. They had already moved so the house was totally silent. She knew what the family had seen in the mirror. She peeked in the house and saw exactly what they had seen in the mirror. It had come true. The mirror can tell people’s future. The house still looks like it did! Go explore if you dare!

Frogington Elvis

It was 3:00 in the morning and a little crazy frog would play a guitar everywhere he would go. His name was Frogington Elvis. He could attract any girl. One day Frogington was taking a walk and the next thing you know Mrs. Pierce grabbed him and kept him as a pet. He tried everything to get out. Then he was forced to play music. Finally after two hours of playing Mrs. Pierce went to sleep. So he shot his tongue at the keys and got out. He jumped out of the window and escaped. Then, he had an hour until his gig started. He hopped for miles. Then, after an hour he made it. He played his guitar and sang. He has still got it!

Grape Koolaid

It wasn’t any day special. I got up and went outside to admire the beautiful weather. Here, in Boston nothing exciting really happened. All until there was a huge purple cloud. “It’s a tornado!” my neighbor said. That cloud was the size of my belly after the Thanksgiving feast. That’s not a regular cloud! It felt like everyone was watching. Reporters came rushing in. They were filming every move the cloud made. “I felt something,” someone said. “Me too!” said another. It happened so fast! Tiny droplets came out of the cloud so fast. These weren’t just any rain drops. They were purple!! These drops were grape flavored! They were grape koolaid! “Yeah!” shouted all the kids. Everyone came with cups gathering all of the tiny droplets. The cloud was there for a few days. The whole town was stained purple when it went away. If you have ever wondered why Boston is so popular, look up the story of the day it rained purple koolaid.

The Day it Rained Grape Koolaid

One casual day I was walking on the sidewalk when suddenly it started to rain. This rain wasn’t like regular rain, it was purple. I stuck my tongue out and one of the purple rain drops hit my tongue. My eyes popped wide open and my mouth dropped so far to where I could stick a whole orange in my mouth. Then I started to laugh because I thought it tasted like grape koolaid. I got another rain drop in my mouth. Then I went inside and told my mom. She thought I was being ridiculous. We both went outside and it was starting to flood. My mom tasted the rain and she thought it was grape koolaid too. We called all the people we knew. They called everyone they knew and soon the whole world knew it was raining koolaid. It had flooded so much that people had to swim. I came up with a way to get the koolaid away. We got everybody to start digging. We dug a hole through the earth and the koolaid went through the hole and out into space. It started to form when it got in space and made a koolaid planet. It was like a second moon but we saw it in the daytime. Everyone was so happy that I had come up with the plan that they built a statue of me every ten miles and my picture was in every museum in the world.

The Lion Army and the Dragon Army had battled hard, but the Lion Army had won! Soon the king and the Dragon Wizard found out how to settle their differences…a joust! The highest classed knights would battle in a three-round jousting tournament. The joust is about to begin! The knights were lined up to start. The first round has begun! The horses were charging, and the knights crashed! The Dragon Knight Lv.1 had become victorious! The next round had come! The horses charged, but missed each other. The Dragon Wizard and the king were watching the action. Who will gain control over the kingdom? The Lion Knight crashed into the wall, the Dragon Knight was victorious! The Lion Kingdom hangs in the balance of this battle. The horses charged, and hit each other! The Lion Knight had won! The wizard used his magic but the king blocked it with his Golden Sword! The wizard and his knights fled the joust. Now, the kingdom is safe… at least for now.

Once upon a time there was a beautiful forest that had anything you could ever want and it was called Chrome Forest. It had every dragon you could think of, well, almost every dragon. In Chrome Forest there was one lovely dragon and his name is Bink. He was very sweet and that was the problem. The other dragons would make fun of him because he was not mean. He had patience and was not rude like the other dragons . This made Bink feel lonely and left out. One day Bink went for a fly and ended up in Fairy Land. He accidently bumped into a Black Smith fairy whose name was Pablo. Pablo knew what Bink was going through because he was smaller than all of the other fairies. Pablo had red hair, freckles, glasses, and green eyes. He was very friendly and didn’t have any friends just like Bink. Pablo also didn’t have a family like Bink. Pablo's mom, Bella his dad Lance, and his sister Chambal had been attacked by the king vulture. Bink's mom Carol, his dad Charles, his brother Ty, and his sister Felicia, had all died from a sickness called Disruptia. While Pablo showed Bink around Fairy Land, Bink realized no one had made fun of him or made mean jokes about him so he felt more at home there. When Bink realized it was getting late he headed back home. When Bink woke up, all he could think about was how the other dragons would make fun of him again. Suddenly another fairy appeared and she introduced herself as Clarinda. Clarinda told Bink she was here to give him some advice. She told him that it was alright to be different from everyone else and that if others did not accept him for who he is then they don’t deserve to be his friend. She also told him if he held his head high and believed in himself others would start to see him differently. After Clarinda left, Bink thought about the advice she had given to him and thought it would be good for Pablo too. Bink flew back to Fairy Land to share his advice with Pablo. The two of them talked a while and played a while until it was time for Bink to return home. They both decided they weren’t going to be afraid or shy anymore after today and it was going to be a new beginning for them tomorrow. From that day on, Bink and Pablo held their heads high and did not care if they were different. Before long they had made several

The Day I Got Trapped in School

This is the time I got trapped in school. It was a very chilly and stormy Friday morning. It was also my ninth birthday. School was delayed that day because of bad, stormy weather. The weather was so bad school was delayed for three whole hours! I said, “I can’t even believe this weather.” Then it was time for school. I got to school and we were listening to the school news. Then we were getting ready to switch to Mrs. Mokhiber’s class for reading. She always made learning fun! She would say, “I want learning to be fun so you will pay attention, do your best, and want to learn new things!” She was my favorite teacher, so far. We took our spelling test, vocabulary test, and our reading test. After that we switched back. Usually we have more time, but it took us extra time to do our test than usual. When we switched back we ate our snack and we checked our homework. When we were done it was time for P.E. (Physical Education.) Mr. Clay helped us practice jump rope. I already knew how to, so I got put in a group with three other girls. After that it was time to leave. Back at my teacher, Mrs. Mark’s class, we practiced our division. She let us figure the problems out with tally marks. Thirty minutes later it was time for lunch. I was lunchbox, but my friend was buying lunch from the cafeteria. Right when she was about to sit beside me an alarm went off! Weoh, weoh, weoh, it rang in everyone’s ears. I was about to reach the handle of the door when someone grabbed me! They put me in the janitor’s closet. I couldn’t see who it was because they were so fast. I peeked through the keyhole. It was Principal Kenarr! It was definitely time to panic! I didn’t even notice, but school was dismissed! Kids weren’t there anymore. Neither were most adults. I had to find a way to get out. My parents didn’t know where I was. They thought I was at a sleepover. Unfortunately, I did not find my way there! I was so sad. It was my birthday and I was trapped in school!

Page 24: THE BATTLEFIELD REVIEW

16

I then decided to go to the library. That moment the books flew off the shelves and some grew faces, arms, legs, and hair! Some of them even grew beards! They started to talk to each other. I almost fainted! That’s when I saw my only chance to escape, a crack under one of the tables in the floor. I ran to it. There was a passage there. I opened the door and climbed into the tunnel. It was dark, damp, and cold. After a long time I finally saw light! I went out of a little hole. I was free outside of the school! I decided not to tell anyone about what had happened or the passage way.

School Time

Once upon a time school was over, I was getting ready for fourth grade. I was so happy I knew I was going to get a nice teacher. I did get a nice teacher. Her name was Miss Beene. I also got a new teacher named Mrs. Shoemate. My mom was very busy before we went to school. My mom had to go to a lot of stores for school supplies. I went with her so I could tell her what to get. We got pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, folders, anything you can think of. When that was over I went to Open House to see who my teachers were, you already know who they were. I meant they were nice, helpful, and sweet and had a pretty class room. I knew I was going to like fourth grade. The first day of school was the best day ever! I got new friends. Their names were Mikala, Lila, Lucy, Emily, Elaina, Kyle, Elise, Kay, Mercedes, Olivia, Shelby, I cannot name everybody but they are all nice. The best part was seeing my teachers!

Scoot, scoot, I heard feet shuffling up and down the long fifth grade hall. As we switched from class to class you could hear the sound of feet moving up and down all through the hall. You could hear pens and pencils dropping as they rolled off the spines of all the science text books. I bet you don’t hear that a lot because you don’t switch classes like us because you are in fourth grade. Fourth grade only has one teacher, we have three teachers. Now I bet you are wondering how fourth and fifth grade teachers are the same and how they are different. They are alike because both fourth and fifth grade teachers are encouraging. For example when they say “I know you can do it,” to the whole class. I like it when teachers are encouraging to you. On the other hand, fourth and fifth grade teachers have their differences. Fourth grade is just a review of third grade but you do learn some new stuff. For instance you start learning about the Revolutionary War. Then, you go to fifth grade and it is all new materials. For example in social studies you learn about the Civil War like what caused it and who won. In science you learn about cells, you learn what all the organelles in them are and what they do and look like. Never the less, that is all I can say to you. Good luck in fifth grade and remember, be good, do your work, and listen to your teacher and you will survive the fifth grade.

The Hat

One day, Mrs. Garcia decided she would go out and buy herself a beautiful black hat. So, she went to the hat store. She tried on fifteen different hats before she found the perfect one. It was $15,000, so she decided to buy it. She decided to show her best friend, Mrs. Sasada tomorrow. She went home and rested well. The next day, she got ready to go to Mrs. Sasada’s house. On her way to Mrs. Sasada’s house, she noticed it was beginning to pour rain. Since she didn’t want the hat to get wet, she gently put it in her purse. She walked to Mrs. Sasada’s door and rang the doorbell. Mrs. Garcia waited and waited until finally Mrs. Sasada opened the door. “Hi, Mrs. Garcia!” Mrs. Sasada exclaimed. “Hello, Mrs. Sasada. I have something to show you.” So Mrs. Sasada moved back, and Mrs. Garcia walked in. They walked to the sofa and sat. Mrs. Sasada said, “I have something to show you too.” Mrs. Sasada got up and went to her room. Mrs. Garcia grabbed her purse and got out her new hat. After she had put the hat on her head, Mrs. Sasada walked in. On her head was the exact same hat as Mrs. Garcia’s. Mrs. Garcia jumped up in anger. She was mad because she had thought her hat was one-of-a-kind. She got up and stomped all the way to her car. She never talked to Mrs. Sasada again, all because of a hat.

True Friends

The door cracked open and she pushed a little harder. “Creeeaaaaakkk” the door went. She finally got the nerve to open it fully. She took baby steps in only to see that no one was in the room, and no one was outside it either. She was too busy thinking about what was going on to notice the little green

sticky note on the door. She stood there puzzled, not knowing what to do. What was going on? She was sure she had school; it said she did on the calendar. She took it out, just to make sure. “Yup, January 27th, that’s today,” She thought to herself. She started panicking. Hyperventilating. Crying. Tricia sat down and banged her head to her knees. The next thing she heard was, “Tricia! What are you doing?” She looked up only to see Mr. Mink looking down on her. “Umm, hi sir. Oh I’m, I’m just, umm, inspecting your wonderful floor,” Tricia said relieved, because she finally saw someone. She quickly managed to stand up, with Mr. Minks’s help. “Didn’t you see the sticky note I left on the door?” Mr. Mink said as he walked to the door.” “Sticky note?” Tricia asked. Mr. Mink came back with a little green note in hand. He gave it to Tricia and she read silently. The note said that they went to the gym for class pictures. Tricia stared at the note in disbelief. “Oh…” Tricia said, almost in tears again. She was definitely disappointed. “Oh, don’t fret Tricia, you didn’t do anything wrong.” Mr. Mink said kindly. He could see the tears welling up in her eyes. “I’m sorry.” She whispered, “No biggy. “Just take your seat.” Mr. Mink said. Tricia walked to her seat. Everyone was staring at her. Her best friend Lucy was the only one not. For the rest of the day Tricia was getting smirked at, pointed at, and even people were making nasty comments at her. “You big baby!” Tome yelled in her face. Tricia just walked away. For the first time in her life, she was getting bullied. Tricia felt horrible. Only Lucy liked her. So she thought. The next day, when she got to class, no one was there again. She looked on the door, no note. She walked to the big gym. Her whole class was there. They had a huge banner saying, “Stand up for your friends!” Lucy had organized a little party to show that she had plenty of friends. “Lucy! Thank You!” Tricia said with a big grin on her face. Lucy smiled and said, “No biggy, just have fun!” In her best Mr. Mink voice, “Yes Ma’am!” Tricia ran to the class and had the best time of her life. True friends were people who stood up for you, who made your life a little easier. Tricia obviously had the best friend anyone could have. Olivia

What I Want to Be in Twenty Years

My name is Shaili Patel. I want to be a person who studies the country of India. My family is from India so I am very interested in that country. The Taj Mahal is in Agra, India. In 2003, there were over more than 1,000 people who visited the Taj Mahal. It was built by a man not a woman. He built it for his wife. There are two big poles in front of it. There are a lot of villages in India. There is a 90% chance you won’t be able to say their names but try your best. There is Agra, Palyard, Amdehvad, Mumbai and New Delhi. That is all I can name. You only want to live in a good village because there are a lot of bad guys in the others. In the olden days, there were houses without heat and AC. If you got cold, you got cold. If you got hot, you were hot. There were no video games. The children could only play outside. They would make up different types of jump ropes. India is a poor country. It used to be a weathly country. India has India’s Republic Day for a reason. The British came and took everything. There was an old man, who took all of the gold to England and then he came back. He was then shot and then he died. You always celebrate India’s Republic Day on January 26. Nowdays they have McDonalds, Taco Bell, Subway and Burger King and many more. They have heat and AC. They have electronics. I have a mansion named for me. India has become a great place. We have a different kind of church. We believe in a different kind of god. We have many gods in fact. We have a different language too. This is a story about India. My family lives in 2 different villages, Polyard and Amdevad. I hope you enjoyed my story.

When I Grow Up

My name is Gavin. When I grow up I want to be a a marine

biologist. I will study fish. I will find treasure. I might discover a new

species of fish! You have to be really smart. If you go somewhere and

you have no clue what they’re talking about, no job! You need to

know the types of fish because if they say, “Swim to the blue tang,”

and you don’t know what a blue tang is, you need to study. But they

will teach me the types. I do know some like these, blue tang, yellow

tang, clown fish, puffer fish, great white shark, and others but I can’t

list them all. I need to know how to use the gear right. You have air

tanks, wet suits, your mask, and others but I don’t know all of the

gear but I will learn. It takes lots of time to learn some thing, but

some not as long. If I want to swim with big dangerous animals I will

have to study them first. The animals I most fear to swim with are

the sharks. Maybe the little ones but not so much the big ones. The

more I study animals the more I will know about them and not be

afraid of them. Also, I can take care of them. Imagine working with

one of your favorite animals. That would be so awesome! What if

you taught them a trick. You could tell your friends you are a marine

biologist. I would swim side by side with a whaleshark. I want to

study a megladon shark. I would Look for a way to stop people from

killing animals. Looking for cities under water would be so fun. I think

even though it would be hard to get this job I would probably get it. I

hope because I know a lot about fish. What do you want to be when

you grow up? Well, I told you mine. I hope you liked what I wrote.

Where I Want to Be In 20 Years My name is Isis. Twenty years from now, I will be an Egyptologist. I will be in Egypt studying the ancient pyramids. By then I will know the pharaohs’ language. I will dig up the tombs of many kinds and queens. I will unveil the most complexed riddles in the ancient tombs. I will travel the whole world to understand the pharaohs’ way of making the pyramids. I shall prove the theories by gathering all the available facts. The pharaohs have many secrets that they have locked into the past and I want to bring them into the present. The only reason I am attracted to Egypt is my name. Back thousands of years ago, there was a queen named Isis. She was an Egyptian. Once I knew her name, I was interested to learn more about her. So I decided to study Egypt. Now I am here in the third grade with my future planned. All I need to do is graduate college and I am on my way.

My Triathlon

My story began in March of 2009 after watching my mom and dad run the Leprechaun Road Race. I decided I wanted to run a 5K race. In October my Mom told me about the Jingle Bell 5K race that was going to be in November. I said I wanted to do it so we started to train in the Chickamauga Battlefield. My parents found a 1.5 mile course around Snodgrass. I would run it on the weekends with my

Mom or Dad and sometimes during the week. In November I ran my first 5K race, The Jingle Bell Run. It was so fun, my parents ran it with me and we all wore matching Christmas pajamas. I would say we were a very jolly family. I had lots of hot cocoa afterwards. When it was time for the awards ceremony I held my breath. I was happy to learn that I won first place in my age division. In March of 2010 it was time for the Leprechaun Road Race and this time I ran the race with my dad. It was really hard. I had to work hard during the race but it paid off when I won 3rd place in my age division. Since the race was really hard I started to train a bit harder in the battlefield. My mom found a longer training course that was 2.5 miles and we started to run that course once or twice a week. In April of 2010 my parents told me about the Grizzly Trail Run. This was to be my first 5K trail race. I had to do a lot of training. It was the hardest race yet. “Endless Hills” is what I thought. But, again, the hard work paid off when I won second place. Now, I know you are bored and I know you want to know more about the triathlon. So, here you go. When my mom and dad told me about the triathlon I was so excited. I trained for four weeks at the pool swimming and at the battlefield biking and running. A triathlon is three parts, a swim, a bike and a run. We didn’t have a sunny day but a cloudy and rainy day! I was happy to put on a new race number, number 320. The swim was 150 yards, the bike was 2 miles and the run was 1 mile. Whew, I was tired. When the awards were being handed out once again I held my breath and got 3rd place!

The Best Gift

I’ve gotten many gifts but there is one I like the best. My dad

got us tickets to a Mocs basketball game and we sat at half court and

the fifth row up. I could hear the basketball moving back and forth

over the court. Their shoes were squeaking like a squirrel yelping for

its life. I liked this gift best because my dad wanted to spend time

with us. The Mocs won on the last second. They scored and won by

one point with a dunk. I will never forget that game in my life.

Redwing’s Story

Once, on an island faraway, there was a small town and nothing

else except a beach and a huge forest that completed the map. In those woods lived three wolf packs. The Ocean Pack that roamed the beaches, and the Shadow pack that lived in the deepest and darkest part of the forest. Lastly, there was the Redwood pack that lived in the rest of the woods. All the packs lived in harmony until a territorial fight broke out between the packs, targeting the Redwood pack because of their large territory. Not only did the Redwood pack’s leader, Sparrow song, have a war to worry about, but his mate, Golden Flower, was very ill and expecting a pup. He didn’t know it, but the Ocean Pack, and Shadow Pack’s Shaman wolves had cursed her.

“Oh, Golden Flower, if you leave me, I will have no heart to lead this pack. Don’t go. Stay until our pup is born. I would like a pup to grow up and be our leader.” Said Sparrow song.

Weak and ill, Golden Flower tried her best to speak. “Yes my dear. Pray to the godly wolves to grant my only wish.” Little did Sparrow Song know about his mate’s wish. It was for

their only pup to come out healthy and grow up big and strong to lead the pack when Sparrow Song’s retirement age came about.

3 days passed until on a cold, dark, stormy night, Golden Flower and Sparrow song’s pup was born. He was healthy, and the average size. The only difference about this pup was that he was red. Blood red. Scarlet. Fiery red. As soon as the pup was out, Golden Flower gave out her last living breath. Sparrow Song was devastated. Sending out a howl, the pack understood what had happened.

“Come to the leader’s den! Devastating news!” After the howl was delivered, every wolf in Redwood rushed

over to the alpha den. Soon every one was there. When the smallest pup asked what happened, constant chatter echoed throughout the alpha den.

“Settle down!” barked Sparrow song. “Enough! I have good news and bad news. The good news is that my newborn pup has been born. It is a boy. The bad news is that Golden Flower has died.”

The old shaman wolf, Tortoise Shell spoke up. “There are two more reports of bad news. Who will feed this

pup milk? Shadow pack is planning a raid into our camp. With most of the warriors hunting, who will protect us? Few females know how to fight. Would anybody like to volunteer?”

“I will!” piped up a small voice from the crowd. “A pup wants to fight?!?!” exclaimed the crowd. A small snow white she-wolf with a black ear stepped forward. “I will volunteer. Even though I’m small, I can handle them! I,

Primrose, daughter of Fire Tail will volunteer. Father has tutored me a little bit of his battle tactics. Even his signature strategy, jump, twist, and tackle. Please, Sparrow Song let me try. I can do more than you think. Please!”

“Well, if your mother agrees, then yes, you may.” Looking over her shoulder, Primrose saw her mother start

creeping over to the front. “Primrose, my daughter I believe in you, and yes, you may fight.

Try to learn quickly in training love, I do not want to lose you. I am counting on you; we all are counting on you!”

Cheering echoed around the Redwood territory. Until the deadliest night in Redwood pack history. That day, Redwing also earned his wings.

Page 36: THE BATTLEFIELD REVIEW

28

It was the night the warriors returned. Redwing was 10 moons old (months old years old) and was playing with 11 ½ moon old Primrose in the outskirts of Redwood territory. During a game of hide-and-go-seek, Redwing was hiding is a bush when he heard a yelp.

“That was Primrose!” he thought to himself “I have to go save her!”

Slowly and quietly, Redwing crept closer and closer toward Shadow Pack territory. Peeking in a clearing surrounded by bushes, logs, and tree saplings, he saw Primrose and four Shadow pack pups about his and Primrose’s age.

“Ha! You scrawny Redwood pup! You’d NEVER stand a chance against four!”

“I volunteered to guard Redwood pack two weeks ago! I can withstand you!”

“Oh yeah? PROVE it! Dark Ears!” “Yes, Shadow Soul.” Dark Ears charged at Primrose. In a leaping position Primrose

snarled and growled. Just then, a fierce howl echoed throughout the clearing. It was Redwing!

“So who is your little friend here, scrawny?” “I am Sparrow Song’s son, Redwing. Prepare to feel my wrath!” Dark Ears and Redwing had an unusual battle. Dark Ears leaped

up and tried to pounce on Redwing. When he missed, Redwing heard a familiar, yet ghostly, voice in his head.

“Redwing, please use my gift wisely, and defeat these evil beings, now!”

Redwing was thrown to the ground just as Dark Ears swiped his face with his paw.

“Very good Dark Ears,” said Shadow Soul “now, let ME finish Sparrow Song’s son! Soon, there will be NO pack leader for Redwood pack until HE joins his mother!”

Suddenly Redwing realized that his mother’s death made sense, it all fell into place.

“You didn’t know?” questioned Shadow Soul “Shadow Pack’s shaman wolf cursed her, making her ill. DEATHLY ill!”

Page 37: THE BATTLEFIELD REVIEW

29

“Redwing, do something!” shouted Primrose, for she was about to be captured. “Please! Anything! Help!”

“Redwing, my gift to you is now unwrapped,” Said the voice once more. “Use it wisely.”

All of a sudden, the wind howled, and tree branches creaked. Leaves whooshed and swooshed around Redwing. A patch of sunlight broke through the clouds, lifting Redwing high into the air. The pups all looked up as 3 types of flower petals representing all 3 packs on the island circled his back. Black rose petals from Shadow pack, ocean daisy petals representing ocean pack, and beautiful pink tulip petals for Redwood pack.

Then, 2 tiny branches with buds sprouted from his back. The buds quickly bloomed and then went away. They were petals from the rarest flower in the world. They only bloomed with the godly wolves. They were bleeding hearts. The branches grew until each petal left the branch. Two white doves sat on the branch, shedding 4 feathers, 2 on each branch on Redwing’s back. The feathers grew into cloth, draping the wings. A burst of light caused the drapes to disappear, flower petals in all, revealing soft, white luscious angel wings.

“Use your wings wisely. Now save your friend!” rang the voice in Redwing’s ear.

“I will!!!” shouted Redwing loudly. “Redwing, behind you!” The Shadow Pack pups and Primrose

stared at this in awe, while Shadow Soul slowly crept up behind Redwing. In shock, Primrose opened her mouth to scream a warning to Redwing.

Redwing recoiled back just as Shadow Soul was going to pounce on him. Redwing flew high into the air, coming down like a rocket, going faster and building speed. His eyes were like fire, and his red pelt was redder than a Scarlet Tanger.

He spread his paws like a hug, and went right in front of Shadow Soul, putting his two hind paws in front of him; he kicked Shadow Soul who landed below an Oak tree with a loud thump.

“Go away from Redwood territory and NEVER return.” Growled Redwing

Page 38: THE BATTLEFIELD REVIEW

30

The Shadow Pack pups were so frightened by the attack that they let shocked Primrose go and ran away, yelping.

“Primrose, you were so brave! How did you defeat Shadow Soul like that, (gasping) and your angel wings?”

“I dunno. If you meet me at the lakeside stone tonight, I’ll tell you. Just say that you’re going for a swim. They’ll believe you. It’s burning up out here.”

“Okay”. That night, Primrose and Redwing told their fathers that they

were going to swim in the lake nearest to the Redwood camp. They didn’t want to encounter the Shadow Pack pups again. Quietly and quickly, they got their deer hide towels and went off towards the lake. When the pups reached the lake, they heard a thumping, cracking and creaking of twigs and broken leaves coming from the forest. Just then, an eerie howl came from the forest where the noises were coming from. It was the war cry of the Ocean Pack and Shadow pack! They wore their towels on their backs, went into the forest, and as quiet as they could, they saw the two pack leaders and the bravest, strongest, and rowdiest warriors.

“Quiet! We’re at the lake. In four yards, we’ll be there. We’ll get the territory WE deserve, their Territory!” whispered the Shadow pack leader Black Rose. She and her warriors crept up in front of the attack party since they knew the territory better than Ocean pack.

“We must stay behind Shadow pack. They know this territory better than us. Don’t get lost. You won’t be rescued until the raid is over.” Said the Ocean Pack leader Flaming Sand “Now be quiet! Let’s go!”

“We have to save the pack!” said Primrose. “Redwing, fly as fast as you can back to camp. I’ll try to hold them back.”

“Are you sure?” asked Redwing. “Positive. Now go before they reach camp!” Redwing flew quickly towards the camp, towel and all. Soon, he

reached camp. “Everyone! The two packs had teamed up against us!” Shouted

Redwing “Children, expecting mothers, and frail elders, get into the tunnels now! This isn’t a joke; or a false alarm. This is serious!”

Page 39: THE BATTLEFIELD REVIEW

31

“Redwing is this true?” asked Sparrow song. “Yes, father. Send the patrols, hurry now!” Just then, Primrose ran into camp, frightened. “They’re here!” yelled Primrose. “No more silly ideas Primrose now go hide! Redwing will stay

with us. He’s old enough now.” Said her father “But I am too!” “Okay fine. Tell Redwing to stand at the pine tree closest to the

sacred rock. You’ll stand at the pine tree at the south entrance. Sometimes, the two packs bring pups along to sniff out where the rest are hiding. Oh, tell him what I just said too.”

“Yes Father.” Primrose ran towards Redwing to deliver the message. “Redwing, stand at the pine tree closest to the sacred rock. Sometimes, the two packs bring pups along to sniff out where the rest are hiding. I sure hope that they don’t bring Shadow Soul’s gang, but we’ve defeated them once. I’m sure they won’t stand a chance!”

“Primrose “began Redwing “Don’t speak too soon. They must’ve told their fathers, who told the rest of the warriors, who told the pack leader who might’ve put them in a special training session to make them stronger, meaner, and fiercer.”

“Oh come on Redwing! Let’s talk more later. We have a battle to wi-“Primrose stopped speaking, for, she saw the two packs on their way. She ran all the way to her assigned base, keeping a look out for Shadow Soul’s gang.

The first wolves coming to fight were the weaker ones. The warriors cleared them off like hungry bears. The next wave consisted of trainees, including pups.

“Redwing!” shouted Primrose. “The gang is here, and they brought a few new friends!”

“So Primrose and Redwing. We meet again. I have some close friends from Ocean pack who will finish you off. Ocean Eyes, get the white one, I’ll finish the red one myself.”

First, Redwing swiped Shadow Soul with the most powerful swipes he’d ever done. Then, he flew up, charging at Shadow soul head-butting him. Shadow Soul sent three more pups that were a little stronger than him to finish off Redwing once and for all, but

Page 40: THE BATTLEFIELD REVIEW

32

failed once more. Redwing had used the moves he’d seen them do against them. Every other pup in the Shadow Pack gang was too afraid to fight Redwing, so they retreated to the woods.

Primrose was growling and snarling, threatening the Ocean Pack pup she was fighting against, Ocean Eyes, to back off. Ocean Eyes was so focused on attacking Primrose that she never saw Redwing creep behind her. He pounced on her back, causing her to fall down face first. Redwing swiped Ocean Eyes’ face, who then backed away, with the rest of the pups.

“Well” began Redwing “That settled it. Now, they are way too scared to come back. We make such a grea-“Redwing paused. The last wave had come. It consisted of deputies, and leaders. “Primrose, we’ve got to help. Father can’t battle two leaders at once. We’ll take on Black Rose. She’s not interested fighting against Father. Let’s go!”

Redwing and Primrose ran toward the line where the warriors of Redwood pack were lined up, ready for battle. They saw their enemies come closer, but no sign of Black Rose.

“Redwing, I don’t see Black Rose anywhere! Let’s go!” “No. It’s because of her black pelt. I see her over there next to

the raspberry bush. An easy way to spot her is to look for the sharp green eyes. Now stay down, and wait!”

The enemies ran at rocket speeds to try and take over the land. They fought and ignored Black Rose since they’ve never fought against Ocean Pack before. Primrose and Redwing sped toward the bush where Black Rose was waiting to strike. They crept behind her and pounced on her while biting her neck.

Black Rose struggled, but couldn’t shake the pups off. Finally, the pups were shaken off, but quickly recovered. Redwing flew up, and came down building speed. He came towards Black Rose’s neck, and bit her. He bit down as hard as he could. He could hear Black Rose gasping for breath until she wriggled her way out of his iron grip. Redwing never knew that Black Rose was actually his beloved his aunt, but found out after she caught her breath and slowly trudged toward Sparrow Song. All the warriors were gone, so she called out to Shadow Soul to come, and looked Sparrow Song in the eye, nodded, and spoke.

Page 41: THE BATTLEFIELD REVIEW

33

“Redwing, it’s about time your father and I told you the big pack secret, we are related.” Redwing couldn’t believe what he just heard. Was this a joke? Was he dreaming? Nope. This was reality. “Your father and I were the best buddies in the whole wide world. Until we became pack leaders, I was upset that he had more land than I did. We don’t have enough food or water in Shadow Pack. That’s when we became enemies. Shadow Soul here is your cousin. Now, I’d like permission from your father to unite the packs. We could become one, and the war would be over, the packs would live in peace and harmony once more.

Sparrow Song thought hard, but refused. We can live in peace, but won’t unite the packs until Redwing’s

retirement age. Truce?” “Truce!” Years passed until Redwing became the head deputy of the

warriors, and eventually married Primrose. When his father’s retirement age came about, 64 moons old, he put Redwing in charge as the head of the pack. He had 3 pups with Primrose. One boy and twins. A boy and a girl. They named their pups Firepaw, Fox pelt, and Midnight Star. Redwing became depressed when humans started setting out traps meant for a bears. Primrose stepped in one, and got wounded terribly. Luckily, the wound healed up quickly with no problems. He made Firepaw leader when he was 68 moons. Firepaw never married. The twins both set out to grant permission to start packs of their own. They let outsiders and banished wolves join the pack. Midnight Star named her pack Dandelion since the land was filled with dandelions. Fox Pelt called his pack Coyote pack since he took in some Coyotes who promised to not lead attacks against him. Redwing died at 85 moons when a disease struck the island killing more than 50 wolves and people. Primrose was terribly sad, and died of a “Broken heart”, but Redwing’s legacy would remind elderly wolves of his time when Fox Pelt had a son who was almost red and had a wing shaped pattern in his fur. The Shadow Pack and Redwood Pack never united, but Redwing would always be remembered.
