FROM THE MANAGER It’s that time of year once again. Hurricane season is

Just a reminder that the clubhouse is not a shelter. The clubhouse will be locked so it makes sense to do your homework now to locate your closest shelter.
Our company is partnering with a company called Silvernest. They are a company that helps people find a roommate. There will be a seminar in our clubhouse with more info to come. There are also flyers at the clubhouse and we are sending out postcards.
Our “Home of the Month” award for March went to 132 Camellia Street, April went to 160 Oleander Street and May went to 138 Camellia Street. They have received their $50 gift cards! Make sure that you take a ride by these homes. Good luck to next month’s winner!
FROM THE PRESIDENTCarla Hannay
Now that summer is here we have dispensed with the formalities at our Saturday morning coffee (no Mc, etc.) just a Koffee Klutch where you can come have coffee and a donut and chat with your neighbors. We will resume the normal Saturday coffee procedures in September. PS We also need people to sign up to do the coffee on Saturdays.
I was informed last Saturday that someone came in and took a donut and advised that the money would be brought over……never saw the money.
Please be prepared to pay for your donut when you take one.

SolutionsNot a Sales Pitch
I have worn hearing aids for a number of years, on and o. I say on and o because it has been o more with my most recent pair purchased from another provider in Venice. I had an annoying problem with feedback, which neither they nor another local provider were able to cor-rect or alleviate. Both told me I should consider newer, more advanced models, which they would be happy to sell me. Since mine were similar, I felt they were more interested in making a sale than helping me. As a result, they wound up in my dresser drawer (not an uncommon situation.) I decided to give it one more go. A friend referred me to Blair Post at Contemporary Hearing. What they said couldn’t be done, was done by Blair. No sales pitch on newer models; just a willingness to listen to and work with me. Aer testing my hearing, he patiently worked with me to make adjustments to the programming. He also retted the aids with new leads and cones. e ones I had were not sized or tted properly and caused much of the feedback. I was given a follow up appointment the next week at which time Blair ne tuned the programming and changed out one of the cones for another size. ese were simple, inexpensive solutions to a xable problem. Although I was advised of charges ahead of time, no pay-ment was collected until I was satised. Although I found Blair to have an abundance of knowledge, patience and humor, his greatest attribute is INTEGRITY. He honestly wants to help. I would rec-ommend Blair Post and Contemporary Hearing to any person desiring to improve their hearing.

WHAT’S A “HONEYBELL?” by Steve Rollison
Consider this a public service announcement.
If you like the taste of sweet oranges and you ever see the Honeybell variety for sale, don’t miss the chance to give them a try.
As the name implies, they are indeed sweet. Since they’re a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit, they have a bit of tartness, too. Other characteristics include few, if any, seeds; very easy-to-peel skin; and a weird bump where the stem attaches that gives a shape something like a bell.
PAGE 5
At the time of writing, Detwiler’s Farm Market has Honeybells, also known as Mineola tangelos, available at $1.29 per pound.

WHEN THE NEXT TORNADO COMES by Steve Rollison
What did you do when tornados were threatening to come onshore just north of here on March 13th?
Susan and I didn’t know what to do. We “knew” that a mobile home was not a safe place to be during a tornado. On the other hand, we had been told for years while living in Ohio to stay indoors if a tornado threatens, that trying to outrun one in your car is a surefire ticket to disaster.
So on March 13th, not knowing what to do, we hunkered down and hoped for the best. Fortunately, the storm stayed north of Nokomis and we suffered no harm. Afterward we watched and listened for some “official” guidance on what we “should” have done, but none was ever forthcoming.
That left us looking for “unofficial” recommendations on various internet sites.
One man who had been “involved in mobile homes for many years” believed that they were getting a bad rap, and argued that as long as proper tie-down methods were used, manufactured homes were just as tornado resistant as stick-built homes since they are built to meet the same code requirements.
Another website I found had the promising title “How to Tornado-Proof Your Mobile Home.” It contained suggestions like install an underground tornado shelter made of concrete, steel, or fiberglass; use the community laundry room if your park has one; and anchor outdoor
...continued on page 6
PAGE 6
structures like swing sets and sheds to keep them from becoming flying weapons. The website concludes, “It’s best to flee if at all possible.”
Virtually every other website I found echoed that last piece of advice. One quoted a research meteorologist who claimed that statistics show people who live in mobile homes die in tornadoes at a rate 15 times higher than residents of permanent homes.
For many years the official advice has been to abandon a mobile home in favor of a ditch outside, but more and more experts now are recommending that you take shelter in a car or truck instead. Researchers studying post-tornado photographs frequently saw cars or pickups upright, with little damage, near mobile homes where people were killed.
Mobile homes can be damaged by wind speeds as low as 70 mph, but 50 percent of cars at sites hit by tornadoes with much higher estimated wind speeds were not moved more than a meter, and 82 percent didn't tip over, according to one study published in 2002.
It is likely a person "encounters less risk of death while belted into a stationary vehicle than while in a mobile home during severe winds," according to the study.
While others still disagree, the National Weather Service and the Red Cross issued an advisory in 2009 advising that if you are caught outside in a tornado and can't get to a safe building, as a last resort you should get in your vehicle and try to drive to safety.
If the vehicle is hit by debris, you should park, leave your seat belt on, get your head below window level and cover your head, according to the advisory.
But perhaps the best advice comes from Shawn Harley, the meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service office in Jackson, Kentucky. He says he thinks people who live in mobile homes should leave when officials issue a tornado watch and not wait for a warning to be issued.
