The Bay Times

Principal’s NewsSpring HolidaysWe wish all students and families a safe and enjoyable Spring holiday. The holidays commence on Monday 25 September. The students return to school on Monday 9 October.

Tell Them from Me SurveyYou’re invited to participate in the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey designed for parents and carers. This survey focuses on student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices.

Parents and carers are an important and valued part of our school community. We will use survey feedback to make practical improvements and inform school planning.

This online survey takes about 15 minutes to complete. It is anonymous and voluntary.

If you have more than one child at this school, and feel that your children’s experiences differ, you can complete the survey more than once.

You can access the survey in your own time, between 14 September and 30 September 2017.

Go to the site below on your computer or tablet:

https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/2nmr3

More information on the Partners in Learning survey can be found on the NSW Department of Educations’ TTFM website: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

Expression of Interest Survey-Revised School HoursOur school has been asked to consider the changing of our school hours. Background information on this proposal is detailed below. After considering this information it would be appreciated if you could use the link below and complete the survey regarding your interest in the school further investigating the proposal. The survey closes on Friday 22 September.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/X62YFBY

Proposal

To change the school hours for Neutral Bay Public School from 9.10am-3.15pm to 9.00am-3.00pm.

Reasons

• A school starting time of 9.00am would allow

students to arrive at school at 8.30am which would be of assistance to working parents.

• A school completion time of 3.00pm would provide more time for students to undertake after school activities.

Process

If there is substantive interest from this survey the following strategies would be undertaken.

1. Consult with relevant third parties such as:

– State Transit Authority in regards to buses

– Before/After School Care groups

– Providers of school performing arts rehearsals e.g. band, choir and dance

– Providers of before and after school courses e.g. chess, French, tennis

– Providers of scripture and ethics

2. Undertake parent and staff information sessions through forums such as the P&C.

3. Undertake a second parent and staff survey after completing strategies 1 and 2 from above.

Primary Proms ConcertCongratulations to the students in the Junior Choir for their wonderful performance in the Primary Proms Concert held at the Sydney Town hall this week. Thank you to Mrs Howells and Ms Arthur for their work in preparing the choir.

Sports NewsPSSA SOCCERThis year in the PSSA soccer competitions. Neutral Bay as always were competitive and achieved excellent results throughout the 4 divisions.

The A team performed excellently through out with attacking flowing football which was a pleasure to watch. As the season wore on, the defence improved with every game and we became a difficult team to breakdown. The goals were shared right across the team which was great to see. The team also progressed impressively to the latter stages of the State Knockout only to be deprived by West Pennant Hill who defeated us by a single late goal. The team can be proud of its efforts this year which led them to equal 2nd on the ladder, only to be defeated by an excellent Cammeray team. Player of the season was Josh Ashton.

The B Team deservedly came top of their competition and excelled in every area of the game. They were unbeaten with 10 straight victories in all the games they played. They scored nearly 70 goals in those games! The boys played entertaining and flowing football that was most impressive. Much of the team came from Year 5, so the prospects are seemingly good for a successful year in 2018. It is very difficult to choose one individual, since their success was such a team effort as player of the year, but one player consistently led from the front and that player was Tom Maslen .

School News

What an excellent PSSA soccer season. Each week Neutral Bay played with growing confidence and skill and achieved fantastic results.

The C Team should be extremely proud of their performance this year. They came top of the ladder along with two other schools. Every match the boys played they grew stronger as a team, displaying great determination and energy. Thank you to Ewan Odenthal, who offered to be the goal keeper; he did a superb job and saved many goals! It was great to see the boys working so positively as a team, communicating effectively and consistently supporting each other. With so many good players on the field it is really hard to pick one. However, the player of the season was Oliver Mace-Smith who scored a number of winning goals. Congratulations boys!

The Girls’ Team have had an amazing season. Not only were they the winners of their division, but also the proud victors of ‘The Skellern Cup’. The girls excelled in the PSSA competition and enjoyed a pretty much unbeaten run, displaying superb team work and some exceptional skills. At least 5 of the girls on the team are new to football this year. It is so exciting to see how quickly their skills and knowledge of the game progressed over the 2 terms. Well done to the girls from year 5, who played exceptionally well. I am excited about the prospect of having such a strong and capable team for 2018! Choosing one player of the season is incredibly hard, when so many girls demonstrated such drive, passion and skill. However, one player who consistently controlled the game, passing the ball with accuracy and making every tackle count was Anneke Corry. Great job girls!

This term Kindergarten has loved learning about life under the sea. KD has especially enjoyed creating art work that has helped us develop our understanding about sea life. We did some printing to show which ocean zone dolphins live in. We used a variety of materials to construct our own coral reef making sure there were places for sea creatures to hide and feed and last week we made jelly fish using recycled materials when we learned about the importance of putting our rubbish in the bin. We are all looking forward to our Sea Day in Kindyland on Friday to celebrate the conclusion of this unit of work.

Debating NewsCongratulations to the Diamonds team for making it through the zone finals for the 2017 Premier’s Debating Challenge. On Tuesday 19 September, the Diamonds travelled to Collaroy Centre to debate against Bilgola Plateau Public School. They successfully argued that Australia should close all of its zoos. In the quarter finals round, the Diamonds came up against the undefeated team from Mona Vale Public School and unfortunately were defeated. Overall, they came out as one of the top 8 teams from 120 teams within the Northern Sydney region. Well done debaters! (Fraser Wait, Anneke Corry, Poppy Cheetham and Pavle Hornby filling in for Arkey Astil and Samara Foulds)

Miss D. Hanmer - 2C Class Teacher

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4)This term Year 2 have been learning about the needs of plants. 2C have been looking at the beautiful flowers that bloom in the spring time in Amsterdam. We have used these flower fields as inspiration for our own artworks. We used a range of materials and perspective to create rows of coloured flowers in a field. We are all looking forward to spending some time outside in the holidays enjoying the warm spring weather and smelling the bright flowers that are beginning to bloom.

Last week, Year 3 and Year 4 performed in Shrek the Musical Jr. There were seven performances in total- two for Neutral Bay students, three matinees and two evening performances. All seven shows were a fantastic success. Each class performed a song and a dance, along with the wonderful finale ‘I’m a believer’. The principal cast worked tirelessly to remember their lines and entertain the audience. All the students thoroughly enjoyed dressing up in costumes and performing with their peers. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and helped out!

Mr R Kessler - 6R Class Teacher

This term, 6R took part in robotics challenges. We were randomly put into teams and we had to choose names for them. The groups were called, ‘The Robotic Unicorns’, ‘Terminators’, ‘Z.O.S.L’, ‘D.R.A.D.’ and ‘Mechanica’.

The first step was to build the robot. We were given boxes filled with the parts that we needed to build their robot. After building the robot, we had to code them around a course and park it in a 20 by 19cm parking spot. This was only one of the many challenges that we had to complete. Some of the others included the drag race, the minefield and the dancing robot.

We had an amazingly fun time with the robots this year and for many of us, we will be hoping to do it next year in high school!
