The Beacon August 25 & 26, 2018
We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life
Center Gym between worship services.
Our Vision Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries
through worship, discipleship, and mission.
Our Mission REACH, TEACH, and SEND
We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal
life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Worship Services Break Free
Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory.
Traditions
At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service.
Connect
At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns.
Freedom
At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.
Welcome to Shalimar UMC

Philip’s Focus
What Is Best for the Growth of the Church? In our series, Keys to the Kingdom, Unlocking the Future of our Church, we have identified the keys of loving Jesus, loving people, being filled with the Holy Spirit, growing up, growing out, and growing together. We have challenged our congregation to actively seek “deeds of shalom” to offer the people of our region each week. These deeds of shalom are done for the Kingdom’s sake and our church’s impact will expand. As our congregation grows in witness, our stream of first time guests will increase. These deeds of shalom have kingdom impact and church impact! As we grow our church culture to incorporate deeds of shalom in everyday life, what else opens the doors of our church future? As we grow toward the future, I would like for us to ask one question in planning all we do. The question is, “What is best for leading our community to know Jesus and for the growth of disciples in our church?” This question is the most essential one for us. Our ministry, plans, and resources should align with this question in mind. Our growing future will be well served if we align everything to one question, “What is best for leading our community to know Jesus and for the growth of disciples in our church?” There are other concepts vital for our future and here is a brief synopsis below: Open the Gate. The laity of our church are both enthusiastic in service and praying for revival. This growing excitement and momentum is becoming more and more evident in our church. What do I plan to do? One of my biggest roles and goals is to open the gate so that excited lay people can follow the stirrings God has placed in their lives. The best things that have happened in 2018 so far have come when we just opened the gate for our people to follow God’s leading. May this continue in the future! Empower. Let’s plan to continue to empower our church to use gifts to build up the church. Let us live into Ephesians 3:20, “God is able to do more than we think or imagine.” Let us dream big God sized dreams and pursue them. There are many people in our congregation gifted in many areas. My plan is to “turn everyone lose” to follow God’s leading and stirring in their lives. Permission Giving. Let’s plan to be more of a permission giving church. If someone has something for the good of bringing people to Jesus and growth of disciples through our church, let’s offer our support. Our official leadership and ministry teams will help us maintain boundaries, communication, and Godly order. Team Building. There should be no solo heroes. We are stronger when we work as a team. None of us grows in a vacuum. The goal is to move into the future raising up as many healthy teams as possible.

Speak positively about the church and get in step with where God is already moving and making a difference. There are three motions in the church backwards, stuck, and moving forward. We want to move forward trusting God! Dream Dreams that only can succeed with the help of God. If we only do what we conclude is possible with human beings, we are no different than other organizations. Today is the day to attempt that which is only possible through God. Move the shalom meter needle every week. Our deeds of shalom are to be a growing part of our church culture. Can/will everyone in our congregation do their part? Our church can begin changing the world. One person at a time and one deed at a time. These principles, I believe, help us lead people to Christ, grow disciples, and
grow our church.

TODAY’S SERMON NOTES:
This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals
Faith Parry, Connection Pastor
Have you ever done anything for God or the Gospel of Jesus Christ that was truly a risk? Peter and John did in our passage this week. Take some time to think about their actions and how they stepped out in faith. Re-Read Acts 3. How did God move through the lame man?
What were the people witnessing? Read Acts 4:1-2. Why do you think the people were disturbed that Peter and John were
using this healing to talk with those present about Jesus and his resurrection?
How would you have felt if you were the priests and Sadducees? Read Acts 4:3-4. How would you have felt to be Peter and John, being put in jail for
speaking the truth about Jesus?
When have you felt you were socially punished for speaking the truth about Jesus?
Read Acts 4:5-7. Do you think you carry the Power of God in a way that shines as it did for
Peter and John?
When was the last time you witnessed someone ask through the power of Christ or in the name of Christ?
Read Acts 4:8-12. Could you be as bold as Peter was?
Do you think you're filled with the Power of the Holy Spirit?
How do you think you can go out this week and do deeds in the name of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit?
How could you disrupt our social order with good actions?
