We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life

Center Gym between worship services.

Our Vision Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries

through worship, discipleship, and mission.

Our Mission REACH, TEACH, and SEND

We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal

life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Worship Services Break Free

Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory.

Traditions

At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service.

Connect

At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns.

Freedom

At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Welcome to Shalimar UMC

Philip’s Focus

Thank You Jim for Leading the Prayer Ministry of Shalimar UMC

Jim and Pat Brantley joined and have been members of Shalimar United Methodist Church since 1969. Rev. George Gilbert was the pastor. They have been members ever since. They raised two children at Shalimar, Jimmy and Trish. In Jim’s previous years, he served as a youth volunteer and also helped with the children’s ministry. Jim experienced a life change in his Walk to Emmaus in 1988. Later, he participated in Disciple Bible Study and has been the leader of many classes through the years. He has also been a part of the first 12x12 team. Jim has served in various leadership roles in the last half century at Shalimar UMC.

Jim’s greatest passion and contribution at Shalimar is the prayer ministry. Mark Batterson in Draw the Circle teaches the prayer meeting is the most important meeting in the church. Jim Brantley lives this and through his leadership has elevated the priority of prayer in every aspect of Church life. Perhaps one day soon the prayer meeting will be recognized as the most important meeting we have each week at Shalimar UMC!

Jim has two standing commitments each week at Shalimar. First, he prays every Tuesday night, along with other laity for the submitted needs and prayer requests of Shalimar. This group has met since February 23, 1992. We are grateful for Polly Schambeau, Jordan Hodges, and Jackie Sawyer for their long standing commitment to this prayer meeting. Others like Rhonda Keller have joined them recently. This weekly prayer meeting has had and continues to have a profound impact on our church. Jim has been a primary reason this group has sustained weekly prayer now for over a quarter of a century.

Second, Jim prays with the pastors each week prior to Sunday worship. This prayer meeting started also in 1992. When Rev. Dick Wright was the pastor, Jim along with Associate Pastor, Bobby Ellisor, and Francine Schidmt began praying before worship each Sunday, in the Senior Pastor’s office. This tradition has continued 26 years. When I arrived at Shalimar back in 2014, I was so inspired by this time each week to pray with the pastors prior to worship. What a difference this makes. Jim, again, is the faithful presence that has kept this going through the years. He also says this time has helped him develop friendships with the pastors through the years. We have recently moved to the prayer room and gather at 7:30 am each Sunday. Others can join us anytime.

Perhaps Jim’s greatest joy was the construction of the new prayer room which was consecrated in 2014. Jim said he wanted the prayer room decades earlier but the doors did not open. He later said when he gave this desire to God all the doors began to open. When Dr. Larry Bryars was pastor, the space was identified and the work and plans began. The donations for the room

were given freely and a beautiful prayer room was designed and completed. This space is used frequently each week and particularly for those who want someone to pray for them following our worship services. Jim says the experience of praying with others in the prayer room is humbling and offers great help to those desiring prayer.

Jim has been called on to lead meetings in prayer. He is often given requests to pray over deliberations of our church. I know many of the good things that have just happened in our church are the result of our praying laity and Jim is the leader! Shalimar prays more now and this is the fruit of the prayer ministry led by Jim.

As far as the future, Jim believes Shalimar is on the cusp of some explosive growth. He sees signs of hope with last year’s Draw the Circle study, the greater prayer involvement of our congregation, and also again this year when the church had 21 days of worship, prayer, and fasting which involved so many in our congregation. If we are entering into a future season of explosive growth in reaching people for Jesus, the roots will be traced back to prayer.

Thank you Jim for all you have done for the prayer ministry. I join with you in hoping the day will come soon when the prayer meeting is considered by all the most important meeting of the week!

This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals

Faith Parry, Connection Pastor

[email protected]

This week we are focusing on humility. On the flip side of humility is pride. It has been said that pride is the root of every sin, including the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden.

Read James 4:1-10. Reflect on all the times James speaks of humility.

How does James compare humility and pride?

What images come to your mind as you read these verses?

Do you see yourself as a person who is more prideful or more humble?

How can you grow to increase your humility?

Read James 3:11-12. How does judging others affect us?

Does judgment fall into the category of pride or humility?

What does it look like if we let God judge and we love?

Read James 4:13-17. How does it make you feel to know tomorrow isn't promised to us?

How do we play our lives and still trust, God?

When have you known you should do something, but not done it?

Lura Reagan is a resident of Westwood Nursing Facility in Fort Walton Beach, and formerly of Shalimar, FL, she is a member of Shalimar United Methodist Church, attended Crandall Class, and loves to do crafts at the age of 101. When given a pair of scissors, she carefully cuts out pictures,

being very careful to stay within the lines. Given two pages of cutouts, she cut outside the lines on only one, and it upset her. When finished, she neatly stacked like sizes together (larger to smaller) and put the “trash” in a separate pile. Finally she placed the scissors beside the cutouts. She wore no glasses to do the job! You’ve probably guessed, she was a former professional seamstress. She is a joy to everyone who knows her.

~Mary Morgan, President Crandall Class

July 14th was a humbling reminder of how many people have poured into our family over the past 28 years since our own wedding. For the many ways you have impacted Anna, Hunter and the two of us over the years, and for the numerous ways you showed your love recently through the wonderful wedding of Anna and Caleb, we humbly thank you from the very bottom of our hearts.

~Mark and Kelly Bethea

Please pray for our campers at Blue Lake. We are excited to bring 5 students to Summer camp. They are regular attenders of our children’s program. Next year we will have a lot more campers so please continue to contribute to the scholarship fund. Many of our campers were helped by partial or full scholarships this year.

Bus Ministry News: Praise Report: Three of our campers come from the Bus Ministry! This is fruit that it works and has been blessing our church. We need more Evangelists to go out and invite those families who may be in need in our community to come and participate in the bus ministry. This involves going door to door. We also need drivers. Sign up on the blue Communication Card and Robin Baugh will call you.

Children’s Ministry: I want to personally invite you all to attend our first Lunch and Learn for Sunday School and Children’s Church. Sunday School and Children’s Church crew and volunteers have a mandatory meeting for training on July 29th at 12:15 pm FLC room 106. I hope you all are here to help bring Jesus to the children in our church. Come even if you just want more information on how you can help, even if it is just once in a while.
